Zipping along on another terrain board(ish)
I received this some time back and had told myself I would only work on it when the other projects I had going where finished. Well, now it’s time. The Zeppelin itself is from Crossover Miniatures’ Kickstarter, and I cannot say enough nice things about Rusti and his work. At first I was a bit intimidated by the sheer size (and weight) of this project, but the pieces are going together very nicely.
Bow Section first: The flooring was coated in Minwax Polyshades Antique Walnut.
-
That's a beast! I'm intrigued as to how this will going together, so lots of photos please. :D
I've had good dealings with Rusti in the past too, he's a gent.
-
As requested... ;) Continuing on with the Bow.
The Red and White striped section in the last picture is the first add-on that I did to the build. I realized that there was a small area in front of the bottom flooring where an expansion could go. A piece of the "sprue" from the Zeppelin, and a small bit of adjustment, and there it is. There are so many possibilities with this model.
I painted it with the danger stripes due to some of the storyline from Malifaux where there is a super-weapon hidden in the bow of Captain Zipp's airship.
-
I seem to remember something like this before :D
Good luck with the build
What is the total length?
-
It’s looking beautiful, I love the walnut decks against the black frame.
-
Gamer Mac, the total length is supposed to be right around 73".
However, I am getting a second cargo section and due some add-ons, I am looking at right around 94" in length.
Charles: Thank you. That's going to be the prevalent deck color. as well as the color of the tail fins. I am still debating on doing the ends of the fins in a striped pattern, but not sure I want them to visual compete with the Flig (message redacted).
-
More progress made: a close up of the add on piece, and putting the skin on. It's a bit scary putting on the first piece, but dry fitting is my friend.
-
How big it that thing ? I'd say it will look fab when finished :)
-
Panama: With the extra Cargo Section that rusti is sending me and a modification I am adding, total length will be approximately 94 inches long by 18 inches wide.
Bow is done: The minis are Malifaux with 30mm, 40mm and 50mm bases showing just how much room there is in it. The few furnishings seen are just the start of how it will look when fully kitted out.
The middle picture is a possible answer to what the "secret weapon" is. A word of warning though to those wandering the decks of the airship: Don't blink.
-
Looking super already!Quite a treat seeing this come together. Thanks for sharing.
-
Impressive! :o

On to the Passenger Section.
I cut loose on this one. A lot of things had to be done prior to assembly: The staterooms had to be laid out with wallpaper, the dinning room/meeting room had to be wallpapered and maps made fit for hanging on the walls. The outsides of the two compartments and the two tops of the rooms were fitted with wood "paneling", that if I had to do now, would be done much differently. 1:48 dollhouse furniture was ordered off of ebay. Again, the flooring sections were done with Minwax Polyshades Walnut (had an issue with one of the walkways, unfortunately).
I decided on railings to go on the compartment roofs, making them a further usable gaming surface that fit in, and then I had the notion to up it another step and make sliding doors for the staterooms. Two pieces of plastic C-channel and the mdf cast offs from the 'sprue" made for usable sliding doors. I used seed-beads as doorknobs, which had the added benefit of not allowing the doors to open too far.
-
Great to see it taking shape.
-
Watching this closely - for ideas for when I build mine...
;)
-
Progress is... progressing, actually. Section skinned, and the Staterooms, Hall and kitchen going in. Each room has it's own Victorian style wallpaper.
-
That looks spectacular; I find myself wanting one now -despite having no practical user for a Zepplin lol.
I have to ask, where did you get the wall paper from?
-
Dodgy_Ed: I just googled Victorian wallpaper and printed out ones I liked. Mod-Podge to secure them to the walls.
And more pictures of it getting together. The top level railing ropes in progress and some shots of the rooms.
-
Very Nice! I will have to follow this thread to watch your progress.
-
Passenger section is now complete... On to the Cargo section next.
The first picture shows the C-channel set up I did for the sliding doors. Very easy "kitbash" if I can even call it that.
Zoraida's door and no Gremlins/Pigs allowed...
-
You stated that this kit is 96 inches long! That is huge! I'm just thinking of all the plots that can be played out.
-
Speed build on the Cargo Section: As per usual, the wooden decks are done with Minwax Polyshades Antique Walnut. The frame was built, base coated black and then drybrushed in Gunmetal Grey. The bomb-bay doors do open up. According to the rules, Zipp has a tendency to drop pianos on opponents... I loved the idea of that, so a Piano model was required. Then I had the thought to take it to the next level: MAD (Multi Anvil Deployment). I scratch-built the bomb rack out of pvc pieces and custom fit the rails to hold the anvils. And the Stuffed Piglet.
-
And the rest of the pictures. First three sections are done. The hardest (tail) section left to do. The reason I say hardest is that that one will get the most scratch-built
additions of all the sections.
-
Wow. That's such a great idea and fantastic execution! :-*
-
Very well done! I truly can't wait to see this as a whole.
-
Straight out of Merrie Melodies. lol
-
Before I get on to the last section of the Zeppelin, I ordered another Cargo section for the build. Rusti came through unbelievably quickly and I did a rush build on it.
I flipped the orientation of the section, to give me the option of a "long-long", or "short-short" setup on the decking. The second section is identifiable by the red-striped bomb doors. You can't see it in the pictures, but the bomb does say "ACME" on the side of it...
-
Now comes the tail section. I am going to admit flat-out, up front, that I hijacked an idea and setup from another builder. Namely the "landing strip" you will see in the second set of pictures. Does that invalidate the work I did? No, on account of I made my own spin on his idea and tweaked things to fit my Zeppelin including the making of the Control Tower.
Ideas cheerfully swiped from: gamer Mac here on Lead Adventure forum http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=19481.465
So, first comes the obligatory build pics. The workbenches that are painted red are all glued in place along the sides after waaay to much time spent painting them.
-
The next two sets of posts are all about the Landing strip:
First of all came the decision to actually do it. Then I scrounged some of the mdf pieces left over from the "sprues" to make the base landing strip supports. I had two pieces of sufficient size and both of them had to be cut in multiple angles to make it right. No pressure here to do it right the first time.
Then I decided to go outside my comfort zone for the actual decking. I could have used anything from foam-core to craft sticks, but I recently acquired an acrylic textured rolling pin from Greenstuff world (http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/22-textured-rolling-pins) and went a little bit bigger than they normally show it done. I used Super Sculpey, textured by the rolling pin and then baked for hardness. I'm quite happy with the results, and the Sculpey took the paint very well. The Control Tower also took shape during this time: deck made of sculpey, the desk area of foam core, extra stanchions and rope that were left over, and the window from some plastic packaging.
-
And the (almost) last set of pictures. Here the painting of the decking is accomplished and the crash net is installed. The supports are made from foam board and the net is from some produce from the store. The supports for the control tower are simple craft sticks (also shaded with Minwax Polyshades Antique Walnut) and then everything glued down into place.
-
Very Nice Work! Can't wait to see it altogether!
-
And the last pictures... it comes in at roughly 94 inches from Bow to Stern. It's been a fun experience and looking forward to taking it to a couple of conventions.
-
Wow again! That is some piece of terrain. In fact it's a games table all on it's own.
-
This is awesome. So big and so much detail.
-
Great Job! Thank You for sharing with us this great build. Hope to see some AAR's with this project as the focus.
-
Cracking build :-* :-* :-*
I hope you don't end up with the bottle necks we had in our games with our zeppelin
-
Amazing! :o :-*
-
Gamer Mac, Thank you for the inspiration on this build. I just followed where you led.
-
I seem to remember something like this before :D
Good luck with the build
What is the total length?
Are we still doing phrasings?
-
On a more serious note, when I saw your structure, I thought back to when I built a large scale Tiger Moth RC plane, and used real fabric and doping on it. Smelly. Horrible. Then girlfriend cursed me for a week. But what a great result. Looked real.
I never flew the plane, but I sold it and it made a number of successful flights prior to a complete sticks and shreds crash. :'(
-
An awesome piece of kit. I Look forward to some battle reports on it.
-
I love that you got the extra section - love the build. Made me put mine together and finish it up too.
-
Its so Coooooooooolllllllllllll :-*
-
You stated that this kit is 96 inches long! That is huge! I'm just thinking of all the plots that can be played out.
wow. certainly wouldn't need a table.
