My first SCW Republican platoon
« on: April 21, 2014, 02:31:17 PM »
Hi,

Just having finished the first platoon (=sección) of my projected Republican Army Company. I've chosen to follow the organisation described in a CoC PDF supplement, which is substantially the same number of bases per platoon than described at Spain in Flames FoW supplement --although better detailed than this latter, because it allows to subdivide your platoon into its composing sections (=pelotones), as you will see. This way, each 3-figures stand represents a squad (=escuadra) of 4-5 men.

Here you have a couple pictures on the whole platoon in a compact, FoW-ish style:

I've chosen to identify every unit by a mixed code of colour rectangles and vertical bars at the stand rear. Red, White, Yellow and Green standing for 1st, 2nd, 3rd (and eventually 4th) platoons of my future Company, respectively; while 1 bar means 1st section of the platoon, and 2 bars stand for its 2nd section. No bars on the rectangle identifying the platoon leader.

This way, mine is the 1st platoon of a given company.

Same coding applies to all stands:

Here you can see now that same platoon, visually subdivided into its two composing sections, each one formed by 3 squads on medium size stands and lead by a NCO on a small stand. The platoon lieutenant is also on a small size stand, but can be easily distinguished by the flag carried by his assistant, besides of the red rectangle with no bars at stand rear.

Most of the figures are Minairons own but, fond as I am of mixing figures whenever possible, you'll see there a few Bandera, BUM and Caesar figures too.
OK, that was the theory. Let's go now for some detail pictures on each stand:

(The man in the middle is a slightly modified Frenchman from Caesar; the other two are Minairons own)

(A Minairons infantryman flanked by two Bandera men)

(The one at right is from Caesar; the other two are Minairons own)

(Minairons both)

(Minairons both)

(Hey, these two are BUM soft plastic!)

(An all-Minairons stand)

(Another Caesar figure flanked by Minairons ones)

(One from each make)

Very nice work. The Minairons figures have the edge I think though, with the Caesar figures matching in quite well. As one of the authors of the Chain of Command lists (the other is Rolf 'Happy Wanderer'), I always like to see people using and enjoying them.

I do not know how useful you will find it, but here is the actual 'Plantilla de Unidades de Brigada Mixta' of 1937 (?), which might be more helpful to you than trying to scale a company up from 'platoon lists'.

I look forwards to seeing more.  :)

Lluís

Great work. As Arlequin said, the Caesar and your figures match very well. You've really captured the spirit of the 'larger force'.

Do you plan on using 'Spain in Flames'?

I think 20mm is probably the smallest practical size for single figures and your minis have a lot of character. They would make a fine Chain of Command platoon plus assets force...probably the 'other option' to get into the SCW.

Keep them coming.

Excellent.
