Here's a work in progress for some early Scots Pike, nothing painted yet but hopefully good to look at anyway. It's also an invitation for any book or other resource recommendations that you might have in addition to those i've listed on the blog post;
https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2020/09/work-in-progress-scots-pike.html (https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2020/09/work-in-progress-scots-pike.html)
Thanks very much :)
Stuart
-
Woohoo!
This'll be good! 8)
-
Looking forward to seeing these 8)
-
Excellent! :-*
That putty work is absolutely solid Stuart!! :o
Great to see you back into the swing of things :)
-
Great stuff. Your collection is the best ever, imho.
-
Very nice assemblies and conversions as ever Stuart :)
-
I know Osprey series can be a bit "curate's egg-ish" but the Osprey Elite 167 - Scottish Renaissance Armies, 1513-1550 by Jonathan Cooper is quite good for visual assistance.
Edit: Ah, should have read your blog first, as I see that's one of your core books! I suppose that means that I'm Flodden a dead horse.....
-
Great conversions, and excellent work on the sculpting (as usual)!
Silly question, but what's the chap on the right wearing here?

-
Thanks very much.
That’s a plackart
-
Ah right! Thanks for clarifying!
Keep up the great work!
-
Following and ready to nick ideas! Are you going to have the front row with pavises?
-
I don’t know, the mind boggles at how these might have been carried downhill at Flodden or if they were just used while they were standing prior to the attack going in?
I’m tempted to do a couple of bases of standing figures with them but I’m not sure on the marching pose ???
-
Yeah I’d imagined them to be held high enough to prevent arrows hitting the bearer in the face. Unless they put their heads down and hoped for the best 🥺
-
As always incredible modelling...cannot wait time see them painted up in your usual style!
-

To some extent the pikes would act to take some of the impetus out of an 'arrow storm'.
I'm a bamboozled by the pavise question- how would one carry a pavise and a pike unless it was slung on the back? And even then?
Very interested in hearing what you all think ???
-
They do not look that early to me, but then again lately I have been more into Middle Ages than all this new fangled 16th century stuff...
That said, this reminds me that I have some spare plastic Perry foot knights and a few left over pike arms from the Mercenaries set, I should try combining those at some point to provide some well-harnessed Flemish foot. But that will probably wait until next year.
-

Not sure if this is accurate, but weren't the front ranks of the schiltron noblemen? If so, wouldn't they have retainers to maybe carry the pavisse in front of them?
-
Thinking of it, there are other examples of similar heavy infantry from the period like this
-

Who knows? This is the problem with just about all Medieval sources. another problem might be; do we know there were enough Noblemen to fill the front ranks of the pike blocks?
I'm trying to remember whether I read about the front ranks from a secondary (or more likely tertiary) source quoting a primary source or no..... it's something that I would have to go back to.
So, to launch ourselves back OT. The standard of the putty work is top notch Stuart and I cannot wait to see them painted up and ready for action 8)
-

Hmmm.... good point. At what point does a large shield end and a pavise begin?
-
It’s what you do with it that counts ;)
-
It’s what you do with it that counts ;)
True. And everyone has their own interpretation of what they feel to be right from the sources etc.
I look forward to seeing more- it all looks very enthralling thus far 8)
-

I think if you look at the rolls of the Scots Nobility who died while at Flodden while fighting in the front rank you get and idea of how many must have been fighting. The Scots nobility was hamstrung for a generation after the battle.

Well, if I was a nobleman or the son/wife/brother/parent of a nobleman who died in battle. I would want the records to show that I died valiantly whilst fighting in the front rank.
Those kinds of records are seldom truly trustworthy. There are often so manny people who die fighting in the front rank, that you might think that there are no other ranks...
Edit: Ohh and back on topic. The conversions look amazing.
-
I thought i'd modify the title so I can just keep this thread going as the Scots units take shape. It's also a small encouragement to myself to create many many units !
Here's the first completed unit prior to basing, some hardy borderers looking for trouble. You can see the finished unit over on the blog;
https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2020/09/scots-borderers-and-english-infantry.html (https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2020/09/scots-borderers-and-english-infantry.html)
Thanks
Stuart
-
Great looking bunch. Well done!
-
Wonderful creations, so much character packed into 28mm. They look fearsome and there is only a few so far...great anticipation of more to come.
-
Superb work Stuart- all little works of art in their own right :-* :-* :-* :-*
The chap with the gambeson on the right is excellently sculpted- very impressive one and all :)
-
Thanks should go to Michael Perry for that one. It’s from a pack of open handed standing bill / pike. I just added a cap to the helmet :)
-
Excellent work! And nice conversion of the Henry VI figure too!
-

Oh..... no matter, they look amazing :)
I've just checked, I had not noticed that there were a couple of 'squared' gambeson in that pack despite owning at least four of them :?
I think these types of padded armours (squared etc) were coming more into fashion post 1500 ???
-
Great work Stuart, the chap with the poleaxe in particular is a very effective conversion. And the cloak works very nicely.

There is one such jack in the original Perry WOTR plastic set.
-
Super job there Stuart. They look decidedly... Scottish :)
Love the addition of the facial fur to poor old Henry. That and an overall gingery tone - instant Scottish lord. Perfect :-*
-
Playing around with the camera to get a better image and couldn’t resist sharing the initial progress on the pike, only 42’000 to go for Flodden lol
-
Super job Jimmy! I love what you're doing with the studded targes.
I did some Scots pike for WOTR an age ago... Kind of fanciful really. But all those Saltires are very decorative :)

(Apologies for rudely poking one of my pictures into your lovely thread ;))
-
Poke away its good to see how others have interpreted the subject. I like the inclusion of the gunners
-
They are very nice :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
More stunning figures with a welcome interlude by the Good Captain himself...what’s not to love in this thread
-
Lush! :-*
-
Fantastic Stuart - just spotted the visor on the bascinet (works really well)!
Simon

Yes, I noticed that too. Consider it nicked, Stuart ;)
-
Great looking figures. I can't wait to see a whole unit together. I was just thinking that you could probably push these guys as far as Pinkie.
-
First batch done, second are in various stages of construction.
I'm really enjoying creating these :)
-
Top job mate 8)
-
Great stuff :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Most excellent 8)
-
Those are superb! Especially like the faces, and subtle, natural tones on the soft materials. :D :D :D
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Wonderful stuff mate.
Are you thinking of basing this lot up as one or mixing with other stuff on the workbench?
-
Thank you
These pretty much represent the mix of clothing and armour that I want for each base but I’ll wait until I’ve done more.

Supoib! :-*
-
Excellent work!
-
Batch 2 is almost done, just 1 figure left to paint. Here’s a sneak preview of batch 3, really happy with these, there’s so much room for composition with the kits just with very slight adjustments or additions
-
Lovely putty pushing Stuart, can't wait to see the finished unit :)
-
A very high standard and highly skilful, but most importantly crisp putty work Stuart :o :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :o
I really love the chap on the right. you have got the jack just right 8)
This thread is turning out to be another real treat :)
-
I think you've absolutely nailed the look with the added tabards. Perfect.
-
They look great - love the details you have added.
-
Pike batch 2 and both batches together.
With this batch i've upped the quota of men in little to no armour and added in a gentleman and French Captain. There's also a couple of figures wearing thick linen scarves which was a rudimentary defence against sword strokes.
batch 3 is underway :)
-
Brilliant :-* love the look of those, the faces/poses really rock.
-
:-* :-* :-*
Lovely brushwork Stuart. They are all little works of wonder, from a sculpting/conversion perspective as well as painting 8)
-
Top job Stuart :-*
-
Great work.
-
Excellent work! The sculpting is top-notch throughout!
-
That Pike block is really coming together.

Damn, I was hoping the photos would be in the "quote" as well. Anyway, technical question - in a "marching" pose such as shown in your piccies, would they put something on the end of the pike (a strip of rough fabric perhaps?) to help the owner to grip it in this position? Being right on the butt end, I can't see how it would interfere with any other use.
-
Not that I’m aware of. There are a few continental sources that depict fabric at about 1/3 to half the way up the pike as per this example.
-
Pike Batch 3
-
Here’s the unit so far, together. Arrayed with heavies and nobles in the front ranks through to lighter at the rear.
-
Marvellous.
-
Looking really impressive!
-
Impressive unit Stuart :-*
-
Cheers buddy, hope you’re keeping alright mate
-
:o that is one imposing looking block of pike.
Great work as always. :D
Oh you guys added a Scottish list to your Tudor Rampart list yet? I am thinking if the osprey crusader kingdoms book works out well for that expansion of Lion Rampart, then maybe they can formalize your guys work some day. :D
-
What can I say? :o :-* :o :-* :o

I do indeed have a Scots list, happy for anyone to drop me an email and i'll send them on - unless there's a way to share em on here?
-
Cheers buddy, hope you’re keeping alright mate
All good here mate and the same to you 👍
-
Top banana Stuart :-* :-*
Love the heavies. Excellent mixing and matching of parts, and expert Green Stuffing on the gambesons and so on. As usual :)
-
Absolutely beautiful, everything about those figures is spot on. :-*
-
Absolutely agree with the previous comments. That's a lovely group of figures, and the conversions make them uniquely characterful and personal. It's something I aspire to. (maybe when I get good enough at doing stock figures.. ;) )
-
As amazing as ever.
Did you sculpt the puffed sleeves on the French captain? They look so delicate.
Stuart
-
I did indeed
-
Pm sent re that list.
Loving each pike unit - what else are you planning?
-
Thanks 😊
Some border horse and artillery then possibly some french in Scots service for Albany’s campaigns
-
Those should be a treat to see.
-
Well, here they are....

Of all the amazingly talented painters out there, no-one comes close to your work. Stunning as ever, a joy to behold.
-
Small update but progress nonetheless.
The next batch is underway, here’s the commander and some of the builds / conversions ready for painting
-
That is just superb... really good stuff. I'm in awe. :-*
-
That commander is the veriest dab :-* :-*
I can’t even conceive how you painted that - such fine work.
-
That's some really impressive freehand on the commander! :o
Excellent work!
-
Sumptuous upholstery :-*
-
Did he make that outfit out of his nan's curtains?
I jest. That is staggeringly good.
-
Terrific job on that commander Stuart, looking forward to seeing the troops painted up too :)
-
That commander look great! :o
-
A splendid result there. It's like looking at a painting.
-
Just brilliant.

Wow!
Everything they said ^^
-
Well, what else is there left to say.

-
Wow :o . They look great. The office at the front is really fabulous. Love how you have created that effect on the coat over his armour.
-
Fantastic, especially the officer's damask coat. :-* :-* :-*
-
Stunning painterly brushwork as always Stuart :-* :-* :-*
-
Work on the Scots is continuing, may I present the ill fated (hmm this title applies to a lot of sixteenth century Scots nobles) Alexander Home, third Lord Home.
More pics and a brief biography over on the blog https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2021/05/alexander-home-third-lord-home-1485-1516.html?m=1 (https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2021/05/alexander-home-third-lord-home-1485-1516.html?m=1)
-
Top drawer stuff as usual Stuart :-* :-* :-*
-
Just glorious stuff. Thanks for the pictures.
-
Beautiful, and inspiring, as always. :-*
-
And that is one impressive looking like block.
-
Sublime figure painting :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely stuff, and a subject not covered enough.
-
Wonderful staging and painting on the Scottish Lord Home. :-* :-* :-*
-
Some photographs of the next batch of pike prior to basing.
-
Fantastic stuff, love the blue you have achieved on the guy on the bonnet in the last picture. Really effective.
-
Quite remarkable as always, they appear to have stepped out of an oil painting into the round.
I am surprised, though, aren't the golden cross and choughs on blue St Edward's arms? And also used by Richard II if memory serves? Did they come to Scotland by some strange route, or were they shared by someone else?
-
They’re the arms of St Margaret of Scotland. and, confusingly identical to those of Edward the Confessor. They were both related (uncle) and she was originally Margaret of Wessex. In the same year Henry VIII also took the banner of Edward the Confessor to France. confusing stuff ;D
-
Great to see the unit come together over the last few days (on't other network ;) ) and they certainly do not disappoint Stuart :-* :-* :-*
-
Those figures are simply gorgeous. They just seem to keep getting better and better, :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Quite remarkable as always, they appear to have stepped out of an oil painting into the round.
This. Your figures always remind me of period illustrations come to life.
-
Your pike are just magnificent. The very spirit of the age.
-
I wish there was an uptick mechanism for the Hawkwind reference.
-
Here's the recent unit of Scots Pike based up and combined with the previous unit.
I've gathered my thoughts on the development of the unit (as well as more photographs) over on my blog https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2021/06/scots-pike-part-ii.html (https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2021/06/scots-pike-part-ii.html)
Enjoy :)
-
A magnificent spectacle they are indeed. :-* :-* :-*
-
A fine array! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Time very well spent in putting such a unique unit together Stuart! There is certainly no other like it 8)
-
Very impressive collection. Thanks for sharing.
-
Super job Stuart :-*
-
Blimey - now THAT is a pike block!!!
-
A truly awesome pike bloke! (I also really like the sky backdrop.)
-
Very nice (and a proper sized pike block to!)
-
Wonderful unit. Really superb. As an aside, we drove past the Flodden battlefield on Monday.
-
wow, solid walk of pikes
-
Truly inspirational work, I am in awe. The standard of the sculpting and attention to detail, complemented by the exquisite painting, is a joy to behold.
Flodden has long been something of a fascination of mine since childhood. I've thus far avoided succumbing to the temptation of doing it in 28mm (mainly due to lack of good figures, and the numbers required to do the scale of the battle justice), and so stuck with 15s (don't ask how that particular project is going....) However, with the advent of Steel Fist to mix and match with Perry stuff, and such inspiration as this, it's getting bloody hard to resist! I may even have downloaded NMTB to dip a toe in the water...
-
Thanks very much Iain
I don’t think I would have made the plunge without the extra time that last year presented to me. They’re certainly one of my favourite units in the collection and I know I need to do a lot more to do it justice.
The anniversary on Thursday might be a good time to start
-
that is a proper sized pike block Stuart! A delightful project you have going that is for sure
cheers
Matt
