The History of Free Norway
This history begins not with Norway, as one would expect, but with Prussia. In 1887, the Prussians tested a new Astronef, utilizing technology that was still in the formative stage, stolen from native Martians and the British formula for Cavorite. The massive vessel, while the largest ever built, was almost entirely space for transportation of men and goods, and was to be the next stage in Teutonic efficiency for moving armies to Mars to help with efforts there. Something went badly wrong. Originally christened the "Fatherland", the vessel crashed during a lightning storm over the mountainous spine of Norway. The Prussians were unable to recover it, as they could not admit that it existed, due to the stolen technologies used in its creation. They decided that there was not enough left of it to worry about, and left it where it was.
The astronef was discovered by a native Norwegian scientist in 1889 who had been schooled in the best British universities, and had only recently returned from the university in Cologne. He had heard rumors of a failed experiment crashing in the mountains of Norway, and decided to search for it. His success had been supported by cousins of the old line of Kings in Norway, who then began gathering as many people as were willing to leave, and had some mechanical training. In 1892, the vessel was rebuilt, and ready. Rechristened the "Frigga", she awaited her crew. While she was being repaired, teams of Norwegian commandoes had been put in place in British aeronef factories in Scotland, German factories in Cologne, Swedish factories in Stockholm, and Belgian factories in Antwerp. They infiltrated the factories as workers, learning all they could about the manufacture and repair of the vessels, and when the signal came via telegraph, they were ready. Each team stole as many Aeronefs as they could handle safely, and set off for Norway. Upon their arrival, the Frigga launched for Mars, and none of the major powers was able to stop her. The Prussians managed to stop 2 of the 5 stolen Aeronefs, and the British 3 of the 7 stolen from her yards, but the Norwegians lived up to their Viking heritage, and took 7000 of their own men, women, and children besides.
Upon launch, the scientist was crowned King, and he took the name King Olav I, of the Monarchy of Free Norway. The Norwegians steered their vessel to the northern pole of Mars, where the cold had prevented most natives from settling heavily. When they landed though, they ran into one major problem - Green Martians. After an initial battle, which ended in as much a draw as anything, the King entered into negotiations. His daughter went with him as well as many other officials. They managed to form an alliance, but the exact details were never made public. Afterwards, his daughter changed her name to Princess Freyja, and insisted that the capitol city be called Brisingamen, which it was.
The state of Free Norway is now a minor power on Mars, and has continued growing. The Frigga has made several more trips to Earth, picking up disaffected Norwegians, and more stolen vessels and technology. Their alliance with the Green Martians seems secure, and they have begun trade with the cities of Helium, as they have managed to earn John Carter's respect due to their stubborn refusal to quit, and ingenuity in the face of overwhelming odds.

And now the forces themselves.

Here is the Free Norwegian First, aboard the Gungnir and the Mjollnir, along with the crews of those vessels.

A close up of the First.
Following now is a better view of the Gungnir, the Free Norwegian flagship. Its compliment of Gyrocopters is not yet ready, and so is not included in these photographs.

Outstanding!! Lovr to see a how-to article on the aeronefs
-
Absolutely amazing!!! :o
-
WOW :o :o :o :-* :-* :-
A complete army, great stuff. :-* :-*
-
:-*
Holly Shamoly!
Awesome force. Really well built 'nefs and a very kewl selection of troops!
Nicely done, mate!
-
Heia Norge!
That is so full of awesomeness. Absolutely brilliant! Well done. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Brilliant work!! :)
-
Bravo nice work!
Finally how many 'nefs have you built?
But I could not see King Olav I and his daughter!
-
...................that is nothing short of fantastic.....
-
...................that is nothing short of fantastic.....
What else can I add to that? :-*
-
A very hearty well done to you sir on quite the project. I am in total awe of the ships and crew. I have been studying the items used to construct these ships and relized I have a majority of that stuff myself and hadn't thought of using them quite that way.. Thanks for the insperation...
-
Outstanding!! Lovr to see a how-to article on the aeronefs
And in Workbench, you shall find...

This was the first thread..

And this was the second.
I still blame Ray for this, as well.
-
Bravo nice work!

But I could not see King Olav I and his daughter!
Just the two, so far. I don't have room to store any more than that. King Olav and his duaghter are not yet painted, and will probably feel more pulp than VSF, as I am using a Thor miniature for Olav, and a Khador Manhunter for the daughter - I replaced an axe with a pistol. They, as well as a certain mad dwarf Spark are in process, as well as the Gyros. I also painted a portion of my Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard vehicles to the Norwegian color scheme, but they weren't done when I took the photos. I did the pictures about a month ago, but I have been using some of these guys as entries in the LPL, so I had to wait.
Now if I could just find people who want to play VSF in Oregon...
-
:o :-*
-
Sir, you are totally insane!!!
I like that in a gamer ;D
-
Great stuff. I love all the troops lined up on the deck.
-
Two words sum up my view of this project:
'Absolutely Stunning!!!'
:o :o :o :o :o
-
@ all of you with the compliments...
Thank you.
It was a labor of love, that started with jealousy at Ray Rivers aeronef project - after building the first one, I found myself looking for a different group to put as a flag on it's bow, and got started on the Norwegian first. I should have the King and his daughter, and their mad dwarf spark - who is the creator of the Gorilla Clank and the Armor Clank - and some of their Martian allies once I order them from Bronze Age is the next few months.
-
GGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-* :P :-* ;D :-*
Now THAT is some of the most amazing modeling I have seen in a long while!
-
Amazing! If I lived in Oregon, I would convert to VSF in a heartbeat. This is outstanding stuff! Not just the builds of the aeronefs - which are incredible, by the way! - but also the inventive use of pre-existing models for the project. I love the Warmachine Warjack with the two shields, for example. I have five or six Cygnar 'jacks, and have been thinking of using them for Weird Wild West, but had imagined they would need converting, and kept putting it off. I can see now, from your brilliant paint job on the 'jack, that sometimes it's just a question of rethinking the colour scheme in order to create something amazing.
Absolutely brilliant!
-
Stunning project - that's real eyecandy!
:o
-
Stunning work and great pics : I particularly like your choice of colors : the contrast on the vessels between the blue-grey, the mahogany deck and the yellow ladders (what a great idea) is striking !
Eye-feast !
meow,
matt
-
those aeronefs are wonderful!!! maybe the best I've seen!
and the minis are great too!!!
(200th post! lol lol lol)
-
My dear fellow you have excelled yourself with this project and probably set an example to quite few of us. Wack that stuff on a games table and I reckon you wont find it hard to find converts to VSF.
Well done!
-

Exqctly whaqt he said, a splendid project, wonderful looking stuff and nice to see a different power from the usual Britain, Prussia etc.
-
Sinewgrab, how many of the Bronze Age "dead earth" people do you need? I've got the lot, and I could be persuaded to either paint them for use in a game involving your free Norwegians or to sell them to you, since I've got a few other projects to work on. Do you want to take a look at them during our next game meeting on July 12 ???
-
Ideally, the lot. Especially any Greens...I'll email you.
-
Tada! And yes, I know it has been over a year, and almost two since I started this thread, but it feels like the best place to drop the newest forces!
And I present to you, the Valkyrie 1, soon to be joined by his 2 sister-vessels.
And I have even more on its way.
I have to thank FUBAR for resurrecting my interest in this army. A friend and I have been putting Imperial Stormtroopers up against GW Space MArines, and now we are putting his IMperial Guard against my Norwegian First. Huzzah!
-
Ha! Genius!
-
astonishing
-
so cool! :)
-
Like it alot! :-*
Great imagination and execution!
-
Looks great and thanks for reviving the thread :)
-
Sinewgrab, could you please post your FUBAR rosters and the combination of rules/supplements/houserules you use? As the author of the VSF supplement for FUBAR, I'm always interested to see how other people are doing it.
-
I can do that when I get them hammered out - we are not using the VSF rules at the moment, because we are both trying to get the rules to the stage where we are not constantly looking them up. Like both of us completely missing the a failed activation leads to going 'on guard'. 6 games later, we noticed that paragraph. (sigh) We are mixing so many genres ATM, that we are not trying to be too specific.
-
What I always forget is that crew-served machine guns can't move and fire (at least, that's my interpretation of the rules - feel free to disagree and provide citations) and therefore when they fire they haven't moved and always get the +1 from aimed fire.
Good luck, and let me know what you end up using, please.
-
:o :o :o
Some superb modelling skills used there, I am most impressed!
Thanks for resurrecting the post or I would probably have never seen these, and that would have been almost criminal.
Well done, Sir!!
Looking forward to any more updates..................
Please, Sir, can we have some more?
-
Great ;D
-
wow! now that would assure FREEDOM!
-
GREAT!!! :)
-
Tada! And yes, I know it has been over a year, and almost two since I started this thread, but it feels like the best place to drop the newest forces!
Fear not, my VSF project has been on the go for the last four years! ;)
Great to see this project is still alive and well.
-
And finally, the leaders of Free Norway emerge. I have had these models basecoated without finishing them for over a year. I would like to thank FUBAR for piquing my interest in VSF again, so that I *finally* finished these, and started working on other Norwegian stuff again.

The Prussians were unable to recover it, as they couldn't not admit that it existed, due to the stolen technologies used in its creation.
Not to rain on your stonking parade but perhaps you'd like to edit (or benefir from!) history a bit further as Sweden and Norway were united kingdoms back in 1887 (until 1905). The flag back then, as the Norwegians flew it, looked like this...
...and was popularly know as the Sillsalat ('The Herring Sallad') in reference to the garishly multicoloured Scandinavian dish based on pickled herring, beet roots, boiled eggs and leeks.
...
-
Truly fantastic. Excellent work!
-
:-*
Love the choice of mini for King Olaf the First.
Your project is coming along really swell!
-
Nice work, I'll keep watching this thread.
-
I remember how excited I was first seeing the ships; it's been long enough, I can be all excited again. The joys of age-effected memory... lol
"In 1814, Norwegians resisted the cession of their country to Sweden and adopted a new constitution. Sweden then invaded Norway but agreed to let Norway keep its constitution in return for accepting the union under a Swedish king. Rising nationalism throughout the 19th century led to a 1905 referendum granting Norway independence."
I thought your story could be shoe-horned into the history; Norway was an identity long before separation, and freebooters starting a Free Norway made sense to me. Well, as much as anything else in VSF. :D
Your 'king' looks crazy enough. ;->=
Doug
-
Yeah yeah, one country, blah blah blah.
I actually looked at that as part of the reason why I created 'Free Norway'. The Norwegians were essentially a vassal country, with a separate governmental structure that was legally beholden to the King of Sweden. The reality I have seen is that most Swedes will tell you they were united, but my grandfather, who was born just before his family emigrated to the US, and all of his friends, some of whom were old enough to remember the time before independence, always told me that Norway was its own country, and no Swede was ever going to tell them different, no matter how many wars they thought they won. I took that attitude, and projected it into VSF, and thus, Free Norway on Mars. I am mildly insulted that you would think I wouldn't have researched it.
Besides, could you imagine trying to paint that garish beast of a flag by hand?
-
If you found my reply insulting, please forgive my fumbling fingers. I wasn't clear on the particulars of the history myself, but thought the story made sense, and posted the snippet of wiki to help explain.
I have to apologize to Hammers, as well, as I was actually replying to him.
Sorry to both!
Doug
-
Sorry, I seem to have hit as sore spot. :)

Nah, it wasn't you, it was Hammers - and yeah, I grew up hearing bad 'dumb swede' jokes and listening to discussions of reasons they left - because the people I was listening to had all left before independence. I was taught early to listen to my elders, and since they were all between 75 and 100 when I was under 10, they left an impression. I never realize how much I listened to them until someone touches on a topic related to them, like the 'united' countries. Next thing I know, I'm ranting - but I am not even sure why. Anyway, enough of that history stuff - look at the pretty models! You know you must! :D

Well, I never said united, I said union, which is simply a fact. I have looked, admired and praised already. :)

Princess Freyja Olafsdottir
An icelandic import or do the fairer sex in Norway use the ...dottir bit too?

Princess Freyja Olafsdottir

Oops. I guess that should be -datter. I'll have to change that in my notes. Good catch. ;)
-
Thanks for wonderful eye candy. I too am glad you reposted! You Just made my day.
-
I love the character models. They are grand!
-
And on a more positive note for our happy viewers, here are some new terrain pieces I have made. I was watching another thread that used cushion foam, and so I gave it a try, without the coating sealer - I just soaked it in a 50/50 mix of white glue and water, with some ink to color it.
And then there is this - an old piece I made for a 'warpgate'.
And last but not least, my steam powered cavalry, the result of a collaboration between Doktor Hansteen, and my newest Spark Dvergr, Doktor Helga Fabius, Master of Agriculture and Eugenics.
I figure that adding a doktor of 'agriculture' allows me to 'breed' new and bizarre creations as well as allowing steam technology. Besides, Norwegian War Mammoths are an intriguing thought, as I have the Forge World beast on my shelf.
-
Now you're just showing off. :)
-
Well, duh. That is the whole point of these threads, is it not? The 'look at me, am I not awesome' narcissism?
-
I need a big cliff area and have been meaning to try the upholstery foam railway technique. How rigid are they with just the pva and water soak? It was something I was going to try but if you've already done it....
-
Well, it is not solid by any means, but it is a little stiffer than it was. I find that the paint layer did as much to help as anything.
-
And today's finished model (I have started painting at work on my lunch hour - so relaxing):
Admiral Thor Heyerdahl, Head of the Free Norwegian First
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/8/1352_18_08_11_7_46_15.jpg)
It is a Kommandant Irusk model from Privateer Press, with the weapon removed. I am really quite pleased with how he came out.
-
You're not worried about him being put on a raft and sent out to sea by his men, yes?
-
You're not worried about him being put on a raft and sent out to sea by his men, yes?
lol No, not really. I was having troubling naming people, so I tracked down a list if famous Norwegians, and used their names. And I have always admired Heyerdahl, so he gets to be in command.
-
Loving this thread!
Great work on all and love your use of the Warmachine range.
Starting my own VSF project very soon and you are one those providing me with great inspiration.
Thank you! :)
-
It is a Kommandant Irusk model from Privateer Press, with the weapon removed. I am really quite pleased with how he came out.
You should be pleased with him. He's fantastic! Oh, and please keep showing off. I wasn't trying to dissuade you :)
-
Speaking of showing off, are you going to let us take a look at your Bronze Age greens and reds? Are those finished yet?
Lovely work, of course. And I expect Hammers should be painting his VSF on Mars Swedes to come after you...
-
The Reds and Green are coming, Warren. They are on the table for immediately after the rest of my Ornithopters and my Warmachine Man O Wars. I then plan on doing the Green Martians, and finishing the Reds, and then finishing the modifications to my Star Wars Tusken Raiders, whom I am calling Deep Desert Martians...
But for now,
Flaggkommandor Edvard Munjk, the inspirational leader for the Free Norwegian First. We have decided that for FUBAR, any unit that can draw line of sight to the flag can use his activation of 2+ from anywhere on the field.
He is an Epic Irusk from Warmachine, with the massive Khador symbol painstakingly dremeled off of the flag.
And his latest artillery, a shamelessly stolen idea.
More to come later, I am sure.
-
And an outrageous Imperial Guard vehicle repurposed to be...
the Thor class Siege Cannon
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/8/1352_21_08_11_6_21_07.jpg)
I wasn't overly inspired, so I kept it simple, just like the 3 new Warmachine Warjacks I just finished. I didn't bother with photos, because the new ones (the plastic kits) just don't have any flavor, so I didn't give them all the little touches I had on the others, and they don't deserve photos.
-
And some more eye candy for y'all.
The first generation of Ornithopter, with its dangerous and unpredictable SteamThrower. Careful how much steam you use, or you may not have enough to keep the engine flying!
And my aptly named MacGuffin Machines - some kind of Dreamblade figure that I rebased for VSF use, as my "insert name of bizarre engine for a token or goal here".
I just realized that I am 8 figures away from being finished with everything I currently have for my Norwegians. I have a few cannon on the way, but there are no more Warmachine figures or such left on my wall for this particular army. For me, who never finishes all of the figures he buys for a project, this is epic.
Next, the Martians.
-
I'm really glad you've ressurected this all Sinewgrab, it was one of the inspirations behind setting up the Atlantis Campaign (in fact in an early draft of the backstory, Atlantis was discovered by a Free Norwegian vessel) and it's great to see it all coming together. Some gorgeous, crazy and generally groovy stuff you've got going on.

Obviously the truth left out in some revisionist history! lol
Likewise, after first falling in love with the ships, one of the things that made me fall in love with this forum, most pleased to see continuation.
I don't recall any clues as to where you're planning to go with Martians, but giddy with anticipation!

I traded Sinewgrab a lot of Bronze Age Miniatures for some work on a few of my pirate ships a couple or three years ago. He painted up some of the Dead Earth greens and reds for a game at a public library, but he didn't have the time to finish detailing them then. There are also three or four white apes and a couple of the blue leach men that I hope he will paint up. He basically has nearly all of what Bronze Age had produced in the Dead Earth line up until about 3 years ago. Since then Bronze Age added another green man and some mounted green men and the black sky pirates. For all I know, he might have bought those by now.
He also uses some other figures with a lot more clothes for deap desert dwellers.
-
And for little campaigns I made a couple of Martian Sandworms. I actually painted these some time back, but I touched up the bases to match up a little better.
-
What manufacturer is the worms?
Also I think the project is coming along real fine.
-
They are Purple Worms (repainted) from the D&D collectibles prepaints.
-
And while I still have my Steam Infantry to finish, I felt like finishing a Martian, just to prove I can - mind you, it is about 3 years after I traded for them, but better late than never.
This beauty is from Bronze Age - still some of the best John Carter models out there.
-
And another quick update - my new Askari mountain guns. I decided to get a selection, as I wanted a bit of a hodgepodge due to the Norwegian forces being, well, viking-ish in their rampant acquisition of other country's weaponry. So, there are 2 Italian 75mm, 2 French 80mm, and 1 Krupp field piece. They feel small to me, but a lot of that is that I am used to the oversized GW and PP weapons.
And as I have said elsewhere, they are exquisite pieces.
-
And I dragged off of my shelf my conversion of a Star Wars Desert Skiff into a Martian Skimmer, touched up some paint on it, and took a picture of it for y'all.

Beautiful stuff. Love the skiff conversion.
-
And the latest from my madness.
I couldn't decide what to use for buildings, and how they would live. So, I have decided that they would be living in the ruins of an ancient city, but not necessarily in the ruins. With a bit of clay, and some wooden frames, they build small buildings - these are what I am going to use for the working classes and soldiers.
You'd never guess what they started life as.
And as well, I have wholeheartedly stolen someone else's idea for objectives.

Water/Oil bottles cut in half?
-
Close. Hydrogen peroxide bottles. I use it to keep my hot tub clean (no chemicals that way), and the last batch I bought was in square bottles, so I should be able to put together at least 10 or so of these buildings to mix in with the more elegant Martian buildings I am making.

Excellent, and you use both halves! How earth friendly! lol
They do turn out better than I'd have thought.
With what did you cover them?

The two on the left were coated in a mix of paint and sand pre-mixed. The two on the right were painted with a mix of paint and glue, and then pressed into the sand, which I actually like better.

This is Awesome!
Great concept and the paint jobs are amazing!
-
And the next to last of my military units for the Norwegians (I have a single cannon team left) - the incredibly heavy and unwieldy Steam Armor, with the ever-effective Tesla Hammers.
And a fortress I recently put together from an ancient wooden castle I picked up back in the early nineties.
And another old piece - this is one of those Epicast expanded foam buildings they sold back in the 90's, but I have always liked the look of it, and finally talked my local game store into letting me pick it up for a song from the store terrain.
So now I can have town-based scenarios. Once I get my civilians painted up, we'll be in business!
-
Well, I'll have to admit the castle brought me up short, a bit, but only a bit... lol
Love the lads in gray, though I'd think the lack of stealth will making getting close with the Teslas problematic. Glorious lunacy!
"Sar! Our bullets just bounce off them!" "Jenkins! Where did you leave our mountain guns?!" "No problem, your lardship. I left them loaded and p'inted in JUST the right d'rection..."
Have you been putting any of this great work to use, and keeping AAR's from us?
Doug
-
No, I haven't been keeping AAR's from you - a friend and I have been playing the FUBAR rules without the VSF add-on, and once we get the rules down, we may start getting in less friendly fights. ;) He is an absolute beginner at VSF, so I am sort of holding his hand at the moment.
And to add some more characters, we have the Doktor of Agriculture and Eugenics, Helga Fabius.
And since I don't think you should ever have battles without some chance of civilians, I have a huge mess of Foundry Victorians and Western models I am working my way though to populate those buildings I keep putting together and harvest the disbelievium from my floating islands.
I am doing them in threes to keep from being overwhelmed.
-
And a couple more civilians for you all...

Still more to come...
-
Okay, keep this up, and I'll forget to pester about battle reports. lol
All I could think was, Helga Fabulous. And, yes, we do love fodder, er, the civvies. ;->=
Doug
-
Love the civilians! :-*
Will have to keep my eyes open for those...
-
Excellent additions!
-
And the latest additions to the fleet. As soon as the crane model I ordered comes in, I am going to make it fit on the front of one of these. I wanted something more workmanlike than my other Norwegian 'Nefs, so that I could use them for missions that did not just include "kill your opponent" when the group I am putting together starts playing in the Mars campaign we're starting.

They are simple, but work vehicles usually are.
-
Looks great!
-
Nice looking nef there Sinewgrab :-*
But it doesn't look so simple to me. :D
-
Delighted you're digging into this again!
New 'nef definitely a new direction. When the crane is added, a new and smashing direction, I feel certain.
Really admire the way you've integrated Star Wars this time. Flawless!
Awesome!
Doug
-
The 'worker' 'Nef is coming along great!
Really glad that you resurrected this thread, Sinewgrab.
I was really enjoying the updates last year before you stopped.
Really glad that it is back!
:D
-
Thanks for the compliments, guys...with the exception of the crane, and maybe a couple of other "construction" type pieces to put on the fronts of them, these two are done. My Norwegians are finished for all practical purposes, maybe a new bit here or there. I need to finish my British, civilians, various types of Martians, and my Mercenaries, along with some Germans - though I may fold my Germans in with the majority of my mercenaries, and run a combined force of Prussian/German using Pulp Figures Seebattalion and Hinterland Hussars, instead of using the Hinterlanders as Norwegian Allies from America (Liberty Belles)...dunno yet.
-
Just went through the whole thread for the first time. What a great project. Inspiring to say the least. I have always had dreams of finding the time to build 28mm nefs.

You have to make time, otherwise you won't find it. I am glad you enjoyed the thread - the project has been quite the task.
And it all started with Ray Rivers building a 'Nef...

Great thread, some lovely looking miniatures. And the 'nefs are fantastic. :D

Don't start up with your false modesty - your Egyptians are exquisite.
-
My poor Egyptians... their landship still languishes in the build phase... :?
-
And one more bit of terrain. This started from my bitching that I had this old Star Wars kit I got in a trade (from White Knight, I think, actually) that should be able to be used, but I didn't want to build walls for it, as it was a playset style Cantina. My wife made the comment, "then put a tent over it"...
And the idea for an open-air bar/gathering place was born. With lowerable curtains (not really, I am lazier than that) for those pesky dust storms...

And yeah, I spent all of my time indoors playing with toys this weekend - yard work be hanged!
-
Brilliant. Great idea to use ticking for the canopy - I might have to
steal borrow that idea, since I have some suitable material somewhere.
-
A Great idea, its looking good :)
-
Wow!
What a brilliant idea with a tent and all. Never had thought of that.
-
And a few more civilians. I ran a game last night, and realized I didn't have enough townsfolk painted for a whole town, so I painted these up before we ran the second game today.

Mostly just kids, but they were all half finished, and required just some detailing to finish, so I got to it. Then I did their mother, and caught hell for it when she came charging out of a house with her family sword, and killed 2 Tusken before leading her kids to the other townsfolk.

My friend tells me I'll come up with anything to justify figures I like in my army. Of course, she and 2 hobbits are all I have left from my LOTR collection - sold the rest to someone who plays the game.
-
I love what you have done with the Cantina!
:-*
That is a cracking idea, and it really works.
If you had just written about it without the pictures, I would have been seriously sceptical about it.
Nice to see that set with some 28s as well.
I thought it would be too small, but it works just fine.
-
Missed the 'cantina' earlier; you know, you could cause a run on the few found on eBay, that way. ;)
Not sure I understand about the canvas. Is that seatback stuff, or...?
Lady with the sword brought me up short, I must say. "That's Otto, that is!" before I'd even got to the final comment. Not all of the LotR figs, and more than a few of the paint jobs, have me wondering 'who is that?' No doubt there.
After years of hillsides crashing to reveal a cave from whence herds of dinos, including curious mixtures of herb-ies and carn-ies, has left me to awe in the simplicity and rightness of 'lass runs out wielding her great-great-etc.-grand-dads' broadsword'. lol
Now, felling two of the blighters DOES seem a bit of artistic license; I have noticed lasses tend to do rather well in our games as well. One wonders...

Hey, they missed, she didn't...simple as that. As the simplicity of her dress makes her usable in so much more than fantasy alone - and the sculpt is very on. The LOTR line from GW was exquisitely done - I bought most of the first run of figures, and then found the game left me cold, and so I lost interest in painting them. No matter - they are going to good home. And my pal is correct, I will jump hoops to justify a figure I like in my VSF armies.
The material I used is a heavy cotton that my wife had left over from a corset that she made for one of her steampunk costumes. It will probably show up a few more times, as I am considering actually making a small riverboat for my Norwegians and such, but having the canvas covers interchangeable depending on who is using the boat, so that I don't have to build one for each faction.
-
And another piece of terrain. This was a birdhouse I found at a Michaels in my area, and while the doors and windows were WAYYY off scale, I didn't feel like taking the time to change that...so I just made up an excuse.
It is a good scale for a 2-3 story building, but significantly larger than the majority of my other terrain pieces. Covering the bird hole with a clock was actually my wife's idea (another reason I love the woman).
And this, of course is why the door is so large - as the sign says, greens are welcome here!
(and if I mangled the Norwegian, blame babelfish, not me!)
The door has to be tall enough to let them in, y'know?
-
Too long without comment, I fear. Sorry about that.
I will say I was surprised you took the house, but shouldn't be that it worked even as well as it does. Too-tall customers DO explain a multitude of sins.
And I thought JUST the rocketship bird house was usable. Well, the castle towers have possibilities, if you don't use based fellows. The parapet walkway is damn skinny.

Very cool. Good use of the birdhouse terrain. :D

Thanks - I bought it not having a model in my pocket (which I actually do make a habit of doing - usually an unpainted 28mm GW something) and was pretty sure it was oversized, but it was on sale for 50% off, and I'll take the chance for $3.
-
"and I'll take the chance for $3."
Picked up some plastic 'crystal' at a dollar store. GF gave weird look when I opined it might make strange, unworldly craft.
I'm risking, what, the price of can of pop?
Okay, she's upset for more 'junk'. :D

Well, I can never help myself - I just keep adding to my army. This idea just jumped out at me while I was watching a friend of mine play Warmachine - I grabbed these off the table, and went to where I had my workbox, found the belgian cavalryman I had not yet decided what I wanted to mount on, and started laughing maniacally.

And, finding that the military was far too busy trying to fend off concerted attacks by German, British, Red Martian, Desert Martians, Green Martians, British, Cephalopods, and other forces, the Norwegian government formed the Lennsmaan, a group of lawmen based on the highly successful Texas Rangers. By hiring retired Rangers and pensioned US Cavalry, they found a creature in the high plains that, according to Doktor Fabius, is related to the desert sandworm, but has legs for the firmer ground. Traveling in herds, the Norse found that by capturing a female, all of the males became docile enough to tame, and they became the new 'horses' for the newly founded Lennsmaan.
(Please, any actual Norwegians, let me know if I got the right name - it was the closest thing I could fidn to a sheriff or ranger historically.)

The models are D&D Bulettes (the smaller ones from Dungeons of Dread) with Brittania Cavalry on them. I like the Brittania models - while they don't fit in perfectly with the rest of my Norwegians, I feel they have a rough character that befits an outdoorsman. I got a group of them from a bring and buy at a convention, and I just ordered some more from the only place I could find that has them. I am also working on building a herd of them, so that I can have them as an objective/hazard, thus my questions about calves for these guys elsewhere.

They work rather well 8)
cheers

Looking good, Sinewgrab.
They work really well, and the background works for me.

I quite like them.

They look great. I just up with this thread. You have some great minis and terrain. Keep it coming.

I thought the Warmachine mounts were crazy good, but those re-purposed D&D, my mind is truly blown! :o

Oh good. Spelling was the least of my worries for these, but that is correctable.

Sorry, I somehow just found this thread, thanks to the new thread you started. Beautiful work, all of it.
One question, though, about these cavalry? How do they sit on the boiler and not burn their backsides off?
I am using the same models as self-propelled artillery pieces. For 28mm, I plan to use a walk behind crewman. For 15mm, they will be automatons. For 6mm, they are vehicles.
I loves me some scale neutrality!

Mars is cold, due to the distance from the sun. The boiler just keeps their tushies warm!
