Title: 15mm Indian Mutiny
Post by: joroas on June 10, 2011, 08:54:49 AM
Having looked at the figures, Dixons seem to have a good range with Freikorps 15, now QRF, having some suitable figures in their earlier period ranges.  Tim Hallam, who designed the Dixons figures, had a Napoleonic Indian range that seems to have vanished.  :'(

Are there any other ranges of figures or scenery?   8)  I did look at the Irregular range but they look very crude by comparison.  :o

The Nabob of Nham has the bug.

joroas,

You can also find useful figures in Essex ranges, their Moghul for instance.  I believe my two native armies for the period are mostly from Essex, matchlock men, elephants, etc.  Also, you can find lots of useful figures in their various accessory packs (I think they call them slaves but they are really good as civilians going about their day to day busines).  And, yes, Irregular are a bit more crude but you can find useful figures there.  The bigger challenge is they are so much bigger than the other ranges.  I have this period in 15 mm and I could not have done it without the Dixon range.  Go for it - and get a bigger playing area for the same space by using these smaller but very nice figures.

Thanks, chaps, I'll have a quick look at Essex,  Freikorps had some Bengal Horse Artillery and a Maharajah in his elephant.  A fitting ride for the Nabob.  :D

Yeah, I didn't really go into it because it sounded like you knew about QRF - but search long and hard there because I used a lot their figures as well.  Cool period and if you are not already aware of it find a copy of issue 48 of Wargames Illustrated, it has a great listing of uniforms for the British and allies and some notes for the mutineers and such.

Thanks for that.

I'll dig that mag out from the pile.................... :o

The Dixons range is fairly good and Tim's figures are nice and clean. Need to find his Wellesley range.

It's not in issue 48, any other idea before I search through?  :D

Hmm, joroas, do you tipple a bit?  :o

I have issue 48 in front of me as I type, page 32, author one Ted Brown, title of article:
A Wargamer's guide to Indian Mutiny uniforms

perhaps you were looking for pretty pictures but is all text description

And, remember, it's Wargames Illustrated.

Good luck!  o_o

Yes, got it thanks.  I was, as you say, skimming for nice pictures.  I did look at the Contents page but, for some reason, this article isn't listed.   :'(  Every now and then, my magazine collection has nuggets.  Will also have to get some Ospreys.   o_o

I have also bought nearly 100 packs of Dixon figures on EBay for £95, so a good cheap start.:D

Any scenery available?

Scenery - that's more of a challenge.  Ian Weekly had a few wall pieces, don't know current status.  Village Green had a great mosque that it took me at least a year to get but I have grave doubts about being available anymore.  Pet store aquarium decor sometimes has useful items.  But do check ranges meant for the American southwest and for Arab north Africa, both can be used to effect for the period - at least for pedestrian architecture.  There is also scratch building - I've found some cool plastic beads (and cheap!) that I will be using as "onion" domes on mosques and palaces.

Of course, terrain is easier.  So, if you are doing open field battles, you need fewer buildings.  Let me know if you find other items suitable - I'm sure others would appreciate knowing as well.

Thanks for that info, chaps.  I'd forgotten how cheap 15mm was..............  8)

Magister Militum has quite a few usable pieces there.....

I've nearly got 2 complete armies for the price of 2 Mutineer battalion packs.  :D

So:

Got my figures.
Sorted out a range of buildings
Wrote to Trevor about some  of his Sudan figures suitability.
Collected my Osprey and magazine reference materials.

Last thing I need are some flags.

Any ideas?

As part of my Great Purge II I came across a box of 15mm Indian figs from both Two Dragons and Irregular. The Two Dragons are from the central and northern India line, so are suitable for the Mutiny.
IC2 cav with shield and spear including mounts
EI2 tribesmen with spear
LI1 tribesmen with musket
EI32 kneeling tribesman with sword and shield
Irregular MIP16 Sikh local infantry
MIP15 rocketeers with camels
armoured elephant with maharajah
MIP14 camel zamburak guns
MIP10 tribesmen with musket
and 1 Freikorps HI57 mounted command
A nice little rajah's local army. If anyone is interested in these let me know. I'm not looking to make any money, but just to get them to someone doing this period in 15mm. Thanks.

Please be sure to post some pics once you get some 15mm Mutiny units painted up. It's a project I've been considering for awhile now...

Looking good.  Like the town as well.  Like the way you based the cavalry, similar to how mine will be.  Keep those pictures coming as you progress.

Great work! I take it those are Dixon? I've been wondering for a long time what they actually look like.

Yes, they are Dixons.

Mike, thanks for the figures, they arrived safely this side of the pond, nicely wrapped and packed.
