I just painted a couple of new Dark Mariner models (Vanguard Warrior and Vanguard Commander) for ShadowSea. These should be coming out pretty soon. A basic overview of the steps for painting are shown below. Paints were a mix of Reaper Master Series for opaque colors, golden fluid acrylics for transparents colors, and Liquitex Inks, along with their medium and flow aid.
The Mariners were painted using technique for achieving high contrast called "Zenith Lighting". The miniatures were sprayed with black primer first, then allowed to completely dry. When dry, they were stood up, then sprayed from above with a white primer, spraying from different directions to give the appearance of lighting from above. The figures were placed on their sides and given one or two more quick sprays across the body to hit some spots that were hard to reach.
The next step involved painting with glazes and washes. The clothing (skirt) was given a thin layer of Ivy Green paint. When dry it was given a wash of black paint + matte medium, thinned with water.
The scale cloth was given a thin layer of burnt sienna ink, then a wash of thin black and burnt umber ink. The armor was given a thin coat of burnt sienna ink mixed with Indian yellow paint. Cracks and crevices were darkened with burnt umber and black. Tentacles were giving a glaze of dioxazene purple ink. The plasma blade and repulsor shield was given a thin layer of cerulean blue + black, then glazed with black paint. The weapon shaft was painted with bronze and glazed with burnt umber.
Highlights were done using and opaque paint. The armor was given highlights of a golden bone color along each edge and on any spikes and other protrusions. The scale cloth was given a quick drybrush of bone, while the green cloth was highlighted with bone on the edge and given many quick vertical and horizontal strokes with a fine brush to give the appearance of a woven pattern. Thin bone was painted on upper parts of folds for additional highlights. The weapon and trim on shield were highlighted with silver + bronze.
The blue weapons were highlighted with thinned white, and then had crackling electricity added with thin white mixed with a flow enhancer medium, to keep the brush from drying too quickly and to make fine lines. The tentacles were highlighted with cerulean blue + purple + white, added in a line pattern down the tentacles to give some texture. White highlights were added along the edges.
To finish the miniatures, thin ivy green was painted over the algae on the armor and weapons, then highlighted with green+bone. The armor was then glazed with some burnt umber to add more shadows. The rocks on the bases were given a thin layer of ivy green + gray + cerulean blue, then lightly highlighted with bone.
