Brushes up...and go!
Yes, we picked the themes for the bonus rounds this time to be suitably generic whether you're into historical, fantasy or sci-fi :)
That's of course great! But where is light, there's also shadow ... As Hawkeye mentioned, the bonus rounds are open for wide interpretations, for example:
Animals: apes are allowed, so are armed apes? Like in "Planet of the apes"? Or only unarmed animals? A "team" of 5 sheep with 5 handlers count for 15 extra points?
Anyway, a new league is coming and I'm very excited about all the fantastic entries showing up. And yes, as it looks now, I could participate ... 8)
I think I will be in again this year, try to improve on last year's standing. Hats off to the mods and organisers for doing this, it's a lot of work and they deserve credit for their efforts.
As far as interpretations of 'animals' are concerned - well, apes are definitely animals, so they would be allowed, armed or not.
Now the dust has settled, I crunched some numbers. For each participant I added up the votes for and against. If I'm not making a basic logical error, this should represent the possible votes the participant could have gotten. The
maximum values was 4900, the minimum 4343. This means the 'max' participant had a potential of 557 votes the 'min' participant didn't have. More than one round difference !
The average and median value were approx. the same (4675 and 4680) which indicates a fairly even distribution IIRC.
Though this wouldn't have changed top 3, since they tend to gather more votes anyway, but it might have caused some position shifts lower in the rankings.
Maybe think about a distributing points based on a percentage of votes for in stead of a absolute number of votes.
I'm not quite anal enough to produce an 'alternate' standing based on this years LPL, but it would be interesting to see the impact.
Yes, sure, like mentioned already I like the idea and I think we will see how it works in the next league.
Taxonomically speaking, humans are animals. ;)
I see that the bonus points for votes has not been altered, stil based on the absolute number of votes. Some thoughts that popped up at the closing of LPL8
Would centaurs qualify for bonus points?
Might have to give it a miss with other things going on. At least that opens up a spot for the bottom of the table! lol
I'm sorry, that had completely passed me by. From my point of view, the suggestion would involve extra work to calculate the % share (x 25 matches), when there is more than enough work involved in running the league already. But I'll see what the Prof thinks, since he will be handling the leaderboard calculations.
Interesting to see that it's the animal round which is causing the most interest. At least nobody's asked 'what qualifies as a woman?' yet :D
I do know what a woman is, it's just getting my hands on five of them that I am having difficulty with. ;)
Sorry if I've missed this in the rules but would 2 miniatures on a single base (ie. Weapons teams) count as one or two miniatures for team size purposes?
Looking forward to another enjoyable & inspirational LPL. Nice work on the metals Matt.

I'm afraid not. Sorry :(
Animals need to be 100% animal. And horses are disqualified anyway, because the aim is to see some painted animals other than horses.
So half-human, half-horse would fail on both counts :)
The intent behind the theme was to encourage livestock, wildlife, domestic animals, dinosaurs and fantasy / sci-fi animals: wargs, giant bugs etc.
Obviously once you try to push at the interpretation of the theme, you hit some difficulty.
So I suppose anthropomorphic animals like Redwall-style armed mice would be allowable because mice are undeniably animals.
On the other hand, fantasy / sci-fi races like lizard-men, would not qualify because these are not really animals, but alien humanoids with animal-like characteristics.
It's tricky, but we have to draw the line somewhere.
Please check if in doubt.

Ah, that's a shame Steve. You did pretty well last time IIRC :)
What email address do we use when LPL9 opens for entries? Or is that revealed on the day?
Yep, as long as you have a team of 5 non-horsey animals or creatures in there, you can include whatever else you like. And yes, the accompanying humans could be mounted on horses Smiley
for it to be considered a new team it has to be at least 5 new minis, but can I then add a few more old minis to have a better looking team and still be considered new as long as there's at least 5 new ones?
also a team consists of at least 5 guys with a similar theme from the same side, but I'm guessing it is allowed to set a scene using adversaries as long as the secene includes a complete theme? for instance 5 vampires versus 2 witchhunters
And in round 5 do both the animals and the humans have to be on the same side, would 5 hunters and 5 beast be allowed?
Will you be doing a tally this year to show number of entries received - My round one is taking longer than planned :? and will never be ready today
Thanks
And how long did people have time to send their first three entries? I am way too lazy at this time of the evening to find the answer myself ::)

We are at 6 participants so far... :)Ya, ya, ya, I'm on it, I'm on it ... ;)
We are at 6 participants so far... :)
People had 4 weeks notice to the opening of submissions (today) and have another two weeks from today to get their first three entries in.
So 6 weeks in total.
Although obviously if the 50 available places fill up before 10th April, it will be too late.
But I would say that's not looking too likely as things stand.
If places suddeny start to fill up fast, I'll let you know :)
A suggestion for you, Richard: Big thing for Round 10? A really immense Venus von Willendorf with Rachel Welsh type cave women throwing themselves around it in a passion?
Debating whether to do a scenic backdrop or keep them white (most of my entries will be of a similar theme).
But LPL voters seem to prefer the storytelling of the scenic shot... ::)
17 entrants.
33 places remaining.
Actually there is nothing finished that I could show and I doubt to get 10 teams painted in time... :'(looking at Your signiture, I somehow doubt that chicks are Your problem ::)
Nice artefacts.
Matt, I hope you are able to make it. Wouldn't be the same without you :)
Peder, I don't know if you're back painting at the moment, but if you are, I'm ready for my annual trouncing at your hands ;)
By the way, a Big Thing is supposed to be a based, moveable item, right? Not a piece of scenery?
By the way: If the big thing had a crew of five women, would that be considered an acceptable entry?

Gracias Verd :)This is beginning to sound a lot like that scene in the 13th Warrior....
20 entrants
30 places remaining
I found some girlies ......... :D Shit knows what I'm going to put with them though lolI have the same problem with girlies!
I'm having to face reality and bow out for this season....the first I've missed in 4 years... :'( but other duties call this year...I hope to be back for the next.
On with the show Lads!
Cheers,
Blue
:'(
Won't be the same without you...
Who'll be flying the flag for Brettonia? ;)
edit : also if i enter an old team can the team consist of miniatures i have already shown on the internet before ?
Yes it can.
A lot of the interest in the LPL comes from seeing newly painted or previosuly 'unpublished' figures or models.
That's why the 'new' bonus points are there. To motivate people to paint new figures, and to submit different teams in as many rounds as possible.
But of course, from time to time, people run out of time or real life gets in the way. Then people have to use figures they've already shown online or in print before, or run with an entry for more than one round. That's okay. Needs must.
Oh i have one more question though
Would a Krampus with 4 children count as a team ? because basically the miniatures belong together
Does that include mine :D
Come on. We need at least one more entry... We don't want James to have to sit it out on the sidelines... ;)
... may I take this opportunity to remind all contestants that you need to submit entries for round 4 by 12.00 GMT on - Friday 1st May.You just gave me the shivers, until I remembered, that I already did :o whoooha
Is it allowed to show pix from the LPL in the not public area at my local club forum when the round it was used in is over?
Remember, if you do not submit a new team for any given round, your preceding team will automatically carry forward to the subsequent round - unless you specify otherwise.
Jan (the excellent Lt Hazel) has unfortunately broken a finger in an accident and won't be painting for the forseeable future :(
The doc who fixed my metacarpal bone with Wire said: "your Hand will look like Wolverines, the wire will project from your hand."
Can you attach a brush there?
I've received 16 out of 32 replacement teams for round 5 so far... Only one day left... No pressure... ;D o_o

The time is 12:00 GST, right? Finished painting but I have to take the *!# photo
That's okay, still missing a few. As long as they're in by this evening, that's fine.
Hello,
ROUND 4 DEADLINE
Just to remind participants that you have just over 24 hours to submit round 4 entries.
So far I have 20 round 4 entries, which means 12 people haven't yet submitted a replacement team for round 4.
If you don't submit a round 4 team, your round 3 team will carry forward to round 4.
I am away at a wedding this weekend, so need to prepare the matches by tomorrow night (so all I have to do is press a button to send them live on Sunday).
So please get your entries in on time. Thanks :)
BAD NEWS - LT HAZEL
Jan (the excellent Lt Hazel) has unfortunately broken a finger in an accident and won't be painting for the forseeable future :(
We've agreed that he will submit new pics of previously painted teams used in previous LPLs or shown elsewhere. Obviously he won't be getting any more new team bonus points, but at least it keeps him in the league, which I'm sure we'd all agree is a good thing, given his beautiful painting. I think most people won't have seen most of his stuff before, so it will appear fresh to most voters anyway... But just in case you think you might have seen a particular group of Jan's figures before - well, you might have :)
Hope the finger mends soon Jan.
Round 7 entries close today... Please send them in when you can... :)Argh, this one is going to be horribly tight......

Said the actress to the Bishop? lolIt's also touch and go....... (I really should be painting not egging people on ;) )
Don't worry too much John. As soon as you can. I won't set up the matches until tomorrow, ready for Sunday...
There are, I must say, a couple of absolutely stunning entries in for this round :)

This is an ambivalent statement. The competitors wouldn´t all be glad to learn about, but the spectators will of course, I guess...

Well said. I'm not thrilled... :D ;)
But at least mine is now done and emailed. Phew!
LPL is a great way to force yourself to paint 50 - 60 new figures in a three month period :)
[…] and thanks also to the "background team" for keeping everything running smoothly.I second that … and more. Thanks!
