10 man aside WW2 skirmish rules?
« on: November 23, 2010, 11:21:55 PM »
To help keep me focused on my WW2 France 1940 project I am looking for some suitable rules for small scale skirmish, 10 men and up per side any recomendations?

Hei Simon,

was once thinking about 1:48 Combat rules, though never played it.
You can download the rules for free, so give it a try ;)

Arc of Fire is good, but units are actually squads, so 10 individually based figures would form only one unit.  There are other sets of rules that group individually based figures into fire teams or crews of 3 to 6 figures, including Disposable Heros by Iron Ivan and Nuts by Two Hour Wargames.

Either NUTS from THW (get the chain reaction 3 rules for free to try the mechanics but no genre specific) or my Flying Lead set from Ganesha games which is made for about 10-20 a side.

Here is a new 'review/battle rep' of sorts - the rules have some WWII stats in:

I am thinking of adapting the Crossfire rules as I like the system and I can initially see no problems in adapting, possibaly adding some cards for a random/heroic element.

There's a set called "Patrol WW2" that's meant for squad on squad level combat.

I too am a fan of Crossfire and have used those rules for vietnam games using individually based figures instead of fire teams.  The fire from a single soldier, with an ak4k or a m-16 with the short ranges of fighting in a jungle compare to a WWII fire team, particularly if all the soldier is trying to do is kill or suppress another single figure.

A completly different set of rules to consider is the Quar skirmish rules called Songs of our ancestors.  Players field 7-12 figures per sides with various WWI/WWII types weapons.

Thumbs up for CF adaptation. I've played it a lot with single models working as bases, and it works good with minor adaptations like:

- No kill on double suppression (strongly improves manouvering)
- Possibility to ignore suppressed model when firing
- SMG rolling 4dice within 12" (and no cc bonus)
- LMG working as HMG
- No indirect fire
- Some oddities taken from Matakishi's blog.

If you keep the models ≤ 20 (including officiers) it runs as smooth as silk.

Otherwise one could go thru Red Poppy, White Feather, even if I personally don't find it actually better than the modded CF.

Seriously, Flying Lead from Ganesha Games. We've played it a few times with 10 men aside and it works beautifully. It's easy to learn as well. Simple gameplay but has a lot of depth.

Hee hee ... that would be FLYING LEAD from Ganesha games :)
I have about finished the WWII supplement for the game ... but there are WWII stats in there anyway.

Whoops!! That's embarrassing! Considering I love the game you'd have thought I'd remember its bleedin' name! Oh well, head's up my arse.

To clarify...

FLYING LEAD! by Ganesha Games!

Looking forward to the WW2 supplement, Rich. Some more nation/era specific rules will make the game ever better!

There are specific rules covering the nuances of the WWII genre missing from the generic rules. The cover rules will follow the Heart & Mind variation (cover giving losing rolls a plus across the board). The major thing for me is that it gives a set of scenarios based on 'patrols' where neither side will be fully aware what the other sides objective actually is ... this gives a real tense feel to these small unit actions.

Will not be long now :)

Seriously good news about the release of a WWII expansion for Flying Lead. It's the book I've been looking forward to the most from Ganesha, well, after Flying Lead itself of course!

Any idea of a tenuous release date?
