Title: Spanish Swashbucklers... or "Alatriste by fanboys"
Post by: KeyanSark on October 01, 2007, 10:01:41 AM
Hi all:

A group of spanish modellers is about to launch a game based in the XVI-XVIIth century Spain. It will have bands of related-characters fighting amongst them in the dark corridors of Madrid, Seville and other cities of the time.

There will be Veterans of the Tercios, Agents of the Inquisition, Sailors...

You can follow all the greens evolution (and rules, if you can read some spanish) and concept art, here
http://www.createphpbb.com/wmesp/viewtopic.php?t=3787

I will comment some of the painted minis here:

A sailor man, with a broken seat
(http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4636/76273718ic8.jpg)

A "Luminaria" (not sure on the translation). Basically, it is a small image of the Virgin Mary with a Lantern... In game terms it acts as a light source for night fighting
(http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9512/77150712xn1.jpg)

A Veteran from the Tercios of Flanders, of course, inspired in Captain Alatriste
(http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/6166/99622960fm1.jpg)

Green Soldier (that is Iñigo Balboa: Alatriste's buckler)

Another Sailor
(http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/1867/marinerofb7.jpg)

More greens in the link above... Mainly Inquisition agents and priests.

Muy interesante, Amigo!

Do you know the size of these minis? 28mm or more 34mm ?

Lovely stuff! I particularly like Captain Alatriste - he looks to have a very natural fencing stance, well balanced & just about to pierce some blackguard's heart.

Oh & beautiful paintwork too, on all the figures

Cheers,
Ian

Good Luck :)

Unfortunately I can not read Spanish, but I do know that these look amazing.  Any idea if / when they might be released?

Any have any idea if they will match up with the French game, Helldarado?

Jesu Maria, put me down for a complete set!

I loved "Captain Alatriste," and thought it was almost a noir version of Dumas. These figures have tons of personality, but I always pictured Inigo as a little bit younger.

I could use those luminaries as objective markers, too. That's great painting on your example there...

I'll try to summarize the state of the project after I manage to review the whole long original topic.

Well, it seems it will be a BOARD game, where the board will be constructed via different tiles. Two bands will be included and the rest will be expansions. All stats will be avaliable in the miniature card. Gameplay will be simultaneous and actions may vary depending on which faction has hired this band (the crown, the inquisition, the noblemen, etc...)

There will be starter kits and stand-alone miniatures

It seems the first batch of miniatures is going into tests for production, so I'd say there are some months ahead until they are commercially available.

If you love your forum, you will procure a set of these figures for us. We will reward you handsomely for your work--800 reals in silver. You may eliminate all those who stand in your way. The powers of the state and church will not move against you.

Mind you, it must be a complete set, and it is vital that you be discrete.

Threats, always threats. And do you think your loud cries for revenge concern me unduly? You threaten what you do not understand, for if my work is interrupted, then all this glory you see about you will fade and be trodden underfoot. There are men who would bring about the destruction of adventure gaming and all that it represents. No, you threaten me because you see me as the Satan to your St. Michael. The world is not made of archangels and devils, my dear fellow. You do not know the dirty work undertaken so that Lead Adventures gleams like gold.

But I admire your spirit, and one day your youthful idealism will be replaced by a more practical understanding. And then, perhaps, you will understand why I do what I will do.

Guards, I have changed my mind. Place him on the next boat to Sweden. Make sure he has a sword.

Then bring me the Spaniard KeyanSark.

Perhaps. Or perhaps I wanted one less crime on this sick soul, and hope that the world can temper Hammershield's iron core into a finer grade of steel. But what is done is done, and it lies in God's hands now.

But as for you, M. Plynkes, I have need for your services as well. The one you call "Hogan" has been seen in Flanders. Dare you brave the Channel again?

Well, I have to admit that the footwear William of Oranges' quartermaster issues his agents is not ideal for stealthly attempts on the lives of papist lackeys. Nor for wenching, I might add. There is something about dingy-looking footwear that just doesn't say "sexy".

Anyhoo... I think we have a scenario here, Keyan, for which these beauties you show us are ideal. Now who makes dutch assasins i clogs? Foundry?

Ok my spanish is very limited and not all the photos appear in the link provided.
But, yes, I like very much the miniatures!

They have good petentials and some (like the monks) can be used in other period as well.

But, if realised, the star will be the "medico" doctor!

Hi guys!

I bring this topic back from the dead, as there are finally news from this project. I copy a link, a gorgeous new mini painted by no less than Angel Giraldez, and I translate the story now:

To shorten the story, these guys decided to create a boardgame based on the movie Alatriste. Those are the models you saw some time ago.

Some figures came, a first ruleset was produced, and some presentations too... But the company had to close due to lack of funds. Hopefully, the guys remained in contact.

The guys meet again and tried a change of direction, so they abandoned the "historic" feeling for an "ucronic" one (don't ask me! no more data is provided by now - but imagine they try to get a broader audience). They redesigned eveything, created a lot of minis and finally, after a year, they made a deal with Zenit miniatures, who is doing the casting now.

This won't be, so they say a fantasy setting like Helldorado, nor a comic-like one like Ron&Bones.

They say that they are producing copies, stocking minis, formatting rules, and making a lot, lot of numbers :)

That's the news. You can find the original at
http://www.createphpbb.com/wmesp/viewtopic.php?t=9871&mforum=wmesp

And this is what comes!!  :o

As I can see from the spanish forum discussion, he is 28mm.

And it seems that they are doing a game is based in an alternative XVII century Spain were the king is dead and different factions fight for the throne. So, alternative history but not fantasy.

I am happy to be of service!  :)

You never know how long these minis will be available so at that price I think it is a good idea to just make the purchase instead of hitting yourself later for not doing it. I don't really need them right now and I have lots of other stuff to do/paint but I just wouldn't want to regret it later.

I was very unhappy with the quality of the photos but I guess they do the job for now.

Will the cards supplied with the miniature be in Spanish or is there an option for English?

Spanish, sorry. It's too expensive for us to do the spanish and english cards, but we'll put the english ones for download totally free.

IF you go back a few pages or google search their name you can find their blog/online store. It is in spanish so you may have to use a translator. I can wait to get the last two I ordered and am awaiting the new releases. I have the first two releases and I can say the quality of the sculpt is awesome, the material is a good quality. The mold lines are noticeable but fixed with some effort and they are slightly larger then some companies.

Their customer service was friendly and patient when I had issues on my end with my paypal. How they helped handle the problem truly impressed me (and it is no small feat to impress a ninja.)

In short I think they are well worth the buy!

Dunno. Angel Giraldez paint them, but knowing he's being doing it for years... I think he can do it in a pair od days, or so.

It's curious, because we have sent packages to China and they have arrived in a week, but the U.S.A. ones are allways late. Looks like crossing an ocean is hardest than crossing the world XD

are they compatible with helldorado minis, right?
Title: Re: Spanish Swashbucklers... or "Alatriste by fanboys"
Post by: Ninja on March 29, 2011, 05:23:40 AM
I think this line is towards the larger side like black scorpion, the larger GW and privateerpress stuff. It seems larger then the swashbuckler helldorado mini I have but I don't have any more of their range for a good comparison.
Title: Re: Spanish Swashbucklers... or "Alatriste by fanboys"
Post by: mweaver on March 29, 2011, 12:35:14 PM
...whereas I don't have a Hell Dorado figure handy for comparison (although we have a few around here somewhere).  But comparing Alguacil to a Black Scorpion pirate, they are about the same height, with Alguacil perhaps a tad taller.  Beautiful figure.

I received my next two models and the quality has stayed high although these two needed more cleaning then the last (it can be expected with resin and I have seen far worse).
Another note on size, all four of their first releases fit very well with the privateer press pirates. I am planning on ordering the new terrain release set also so if any of you get it before I do please post! I will give a detailed review when I get mine. Keep up the great work and I will have to buy the whole line!

Nice sculpt. Very nice, to be sure, but why hold a blade behind your back like that? You'd have no thrusting nor chopping power whatsoever...

Maybe for the same reason the dread pirate roberts fights with his left hand instead of his right.

It would be unfair for this gentleman not to fight with one hand behind his back!! :)

Well, first of all: thanks. It's nice when people like your works after 4 days of gluing and painting XD

And about the pose, it was my partner's idea, but I think it's a type of pose. Your opponet can't see what are you doing with the sword and then... Or for being cool, not sure XD

Nice sculpt. Very nice, to be sure, but why hold a blade behind your back like that? You'd have no thrusting nor chopping power whatsoever...

Ajen I did fencing, we used that movement when the opponent was too close to use the sword properly, so with the maneouver you could gain the sword range necessary to touch him. You can see it in the Barry Lindon movie.

Certainly, in the mini pose, that he is keeping the range with his dagger, it can only be explained as taunt... Typical Spanish bold swordman!

Most of the people do the same, so we're thinking on getting out those horrible shipping costs some way.

You could maybe also offer several miniatures as a set, thus reducing the postage%?

Yeah, but the real problem is people who have to wait 2 or 3 months for doing a big order. We would like people to get the last releases, but We don't know how to do it.

Would it not make sense to have a UK distributor? UK postage is among the lowest in Europe. I am sure Northstar, Warlord or Maelstroem would be happy to carry your products. It would be great though if they were available in metal as well...

totally agree: maelstrom means a LOT of audience, and free shipping worldwhide! =) at the moment your miniatures are known only in the specific places like here, with malestrom you will sell a lot more, with less profits per miniature. I don't know if it is convenient for you, it's all up to you :)

In the U.S., the "Cool mini or not" shop has, to my knowledge, the deepest range of small miniature lines, many of them European.    I think some of the companies they carry have small ranges.

http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/

Buying directly from you has worked well for me, but it would be nice if a wider range of figure collectors saw your gorgeous figures.

The figures don't come fixed to the hex base, so you can always use square or round.  I have a couple primed, and I put them on small square bases. (Really need to paint them!).

Yeah, but I have heared that they get the greens of some companies and do their own copies, paying the sculptor only a percent of the sales. It's strange.

Not that strange, it saves on shipping costs and resolves a lot of inventory issues. In fact licensing agreements weren't that unusual before the internet.

Don't dismiss the idea out of hand, instead talk to some of the sculptors and companies that they carry now, see how they feel about their experiences.

Or you could try a smaller up-coming distributor like the guys that produce Relics.  Gav is a really nice bloke and won't rip you or your customers off.  I'll try to find a link to his site.

He already distributes the Bushido range for another company and has signed a deal to keep Unbridled Fury from disappearing.

I hope to receive the first copies today or tomorrow. And then I'll send them to Emuse, so... I think she will be released on January the 6th. The good new is I'm finishing Zurriago, and I'll send it today, so we'll be having a little advance for next releases.

I was unsure about the smoke at first myself but as I looked more into his pose, I think it adds to the idea/feeling that he has just taken a shot and now gauging his success.

Both models seem well worth the buy!

Love it! Love it! Love it!! You've topped yourselves yet again!! There's sssssooooooo much character in everything you produce!! My only worry is the detail on the rifle. It looks too fiddly to cast!

Thanks.

I hope the smoke will make it more stuck in rifle's body, because I saw that strange design in an old arcquebuss and I loved it. I'm not sure how it works, but it's cool the That "S" is similar to the symbol of the Guard XD

Some people did ask how would be the miniatures you get in option G, painted by Emuse. Well, this is the band of one of the members of our staff, painted by him:

And this is another one's:

As you can see, level is REALLY similar to the card ones.

Oh, and here you are a pair of miniatures in progress, sculpted by Julen Galparsoro:

Plastic? No, these are made of resin. It has more detail than metal.

Plastic? No, these are made of resin. It has more detail than metal.

sorry for being unspecific, It is not the level of detail that I don't like, it is the lack of weight and the brittleness.  I think most would prefer metal to resin and thus a way to expand your market  ;)
Title: Re: Spanish Swashbucklers... or "Alatriste by fanboys"
Post by: Sergus on August 26, 2012, 05:24:45 PM
Yeah, some people asked for it, but we haven't got a good metal caster to work with, and our miniatures aren't done with high-detail sculpt, so usual in miniatures which will be casted in metal, so I don't know how good would be the copies.
Title: Re: Spanish Swashbucklers... or "Alatriste by fanboys"
Post by: Ninja on August 28, 2012, 06:59:30 PM
While I do not want to derail this thread with the mind numbing argument of metal vs plastic or resin. I can tell you I own every one of their miniatures to date (all in resin) and have minimal issues with the casting. I would recommend their products for sure.
