Solo rules for Sci - Fi law enforcement gaming?
« on: January 22, 2024, 03:01:37 PM »
I started a Five Parsecs From Home campaign last year and I'm having a blast  :D.

I have started thinking that I'd like to do a Sci Fi cop game as well, a small precinct with maybe a small homicide division and beat cops.

Any suitable rulesystems that can be recommended? I am positive I've seen a 5150: New Beginnings supplement for that but now I can't find it on the net  >:(.

I've got 5150: New Beginnings Urban Renewal and 5150: New Beginnings New Hope City PI as PDFs. IIRC I stopped playing them as you spent more time rolling on tables and less time playing with miniatures.

I remember reading the 5150 New Beginning rules a few years back, and yes there are LOTS of tables. However, I might still make it work for me if I pregenerate the encounter and feign surprise ;).

Say, encounter Holdup of Pharmacy, X number of drug addicts, hostage situation. Do I need to call in SWAT team? Backup?  Can my partner sneak up on them while I keep them talking?

If I know the scenario, circumstances,  numbers of enemies etc and THEN set the game up I think it still would be very enjoyable.

Not that it'll help you right now but that's my next rule set project.

What's keeping you from porting 5 Parsecs mechanics into a Sci Fi law enforcement setting?

Sucker for a good solo ruleset. Picked up The Department - love the reaction mechanics.

(and yes, I'm working on a solo/coop scifi ruleset based on Sellswords, but it isn't really what you're looking for)

The department has been one I've thought about on and off for a while, but never got around to buying it. I'm sure there are other reviews out there, but this one from 2015 may be of use (searching for "The Department reviews" does not list a wargame as its first hit lol) - Sapper Joe's blog

It mentions a sister set of rules called Ghosts of Hefei, which I'd never heard of.

I shall add it to my wargame vault wishlist, if it's not already there...

I have now received several recommendations for The Department. I'm familiar with the Goal System and I like what I have read about it!

I game almost exclusively in 28-32mm but the 15mm can easily be converted into inches instead of centimetres.

Horizon Wars: Zero Dark is based around hard sci-fi elite forces, with very popular solo rules included. Might be what you're after:

Interestingly, the next supplement - that I'm just starting to move to full layout for publication later this year - introduces non-lethal weapons, civilian NPCs and crowds, with new rules for Spooks (intelligence officers) to cover informants asking other things, so it'll make the game more optimised towards a law enforcement theme.
