Title: scratch built tramp steamer
Post by: roadskare63 on September 21, 2015, 02:19:40 AM
Hi all...it's me again with another project.
I figured a cargo ship of some kind was needed for my 28mm submarine to go after, but still needed to be compact enough for a game board/table and big enough for a bit of play.
This tramp is of a generic but classic look(S.S. Venturesque).....
The materials are of the normal items I use...i.e. cardboard, foam core, plastic bitz, crafting wood, washers and grommets of various sizes, puff paint for rivets, watch parts, wire for the door handles and such.....

I still have a lot of minor details to get to like the steam pipes for the cargo winch and anchor windlass...some cables and a hook for the cargo boom...a spot light over the wheelhouse, and a life boat for the stack level, or i may just hang it from the stern via davits...I also intend to make beds and dressers for the staterooms, the chart table and ship's wheel for the wheel house...the crews quarters will be furnished with beds and lockers...and a kitchen/mess...also there will be a fuel oil fired scotch styled boiler and triple expansion engine along with fuel tanks in the engine room.

Let me know your thoughts as I will accept ALL criticisms and ideas.
Thanks and cheers!!,
Carl

hey guys...thank you for the comments!!
General,....this is puff paint...
(http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk164/roadskare63/puff%20paint025_zps9qq9b6wc.jpg) (http://s280.photobucket.com/user/roadskare63/media/puff%20paint025_zps9qq9b6wc.jpg.html)

It is used to create 3D art on fabric weather it be a picture or words...it comes in many different colors.
When it dries it becomes a rubbery solid and is paintable.
The applicator is very small and affords quite good control when you squeeze the bottle.
It can be found in any craft store and the craft dept. of wal*mart.
Cheers, Carl

Argonor,
Thank you for your comment.
It just takes time and patience...i have never done a steamship before, but I had to try...and sure I goofed up a few times...ya just learn from the mistakes is all.
I have lurked on sites like Lead Adventures Forum for years picking up ideas and techniques from a great bunch of folks who were good enough to share their experiences
before i tried my first castle. I do a lot of research on a project before I start a build to get an idea and feel for how others do their miniatures.
You can do ANYTHING you put your mind to.
Cheers,
Carl

That is excellent! I only had made the passenger/crew to cargo compartment ratio in favour of the cargo bay, but this is no criticism. Very well done - a true beauty!

A man after my own heart, recycle what you can buy what you haven't time to build.
A tip would to go thinner with the internal walls, you can add strength by using strips of card with rivets it's also a great way to hide strengthing strips.(if you place a strip back to back, one inside and one outside you get strength with out the risk of having to build thicker walls especially when representing metal walls.)
It's not easy to get the proportion's right when building to a model you want to game with both inside and out.(a lower and longer hull would work better and be stronger )
It stands out because you've got your sub in the picture(which is nice in its own right) which is a surface to game on rather than in.Which is long and low,and only makes the steamer look taller and shorter.
That said you've projected the feel of a sea going Tramp Steamer very well.(I'd be more than happy to game with on my table.)
Job well done ,
Looking forward to seeing the finished article,it's going to be a great model to own.
Mark.

Thanx for the idea to get stronger but thinner interior walls...I had not thought about it during the build, but you make a good point!!

lol your welcome (people think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to card modelling but just between you and me I don't I just make it up as I go along ;))
Your right there's some great advice ,and ideas on this forum, and as a rule some great like minded people.
Now stop procrastinating and get if finished.as I'm waiting on an update.(also I'm not beyond borrowing ideas :D)

Just a little TEASER of what I am up to with the tramp.....
engine room and cabin furnitures...

They are small...but the triple expansion steam engine has twin fuel oil fed boilers...the supplemental draw fuel and water tanks are in the stern.
There will also be a small generator hooked up to the steam engine crank shaft.

I will post when i finish painting everything...That's it for now...

and...LOL@ eric...yessss....I am quite mad!! heh...this hobby was meant to calm ...soothe the nerves that cause the madness.....BUT.......lol!!

I still have to place the wheel latches on the bulkhead doors as well as build the ship's wheel for the bridge/wheelhouse and the hook and lines for the cargo boom.
but let me know what ya think so far...things have been going slowly due to Halloween decorations and such
Cheers,
Carl

Carl just keep pushing the detailing the same level of painting on the inside as on the out,or it'll bug the hell out of you every time you look at it.Still an enjoyable model that no one here wouldn't want to game with.

Hey Mark,
Yes...I will have to dirty/rust up the interior soon.....as yeah it's much too clean and out of sync with the outside of the tramp...that said...I will add a hook to the deck boom and call it done after the interior paint...I hope to post this in a week or so...(Halloween party prep and decorations shut me down for a few weeks)
Thanks for all the support you guys!!...It really helps!
Cheers,
Carl
