A new range under development and here is the first one with a coat of primer :)

Suitable from the Boshin war right up till the second world war at a push. Most of the buildings will only be suitable for the latter half of the 19th cen.
I've got another one on the go being stuck together so hopefully more before the weekend :)
cheers
James

I guess it HAD to happen sooner or later Victorian-era Japanese buildings.
;)
Great stuff, mate.

Looks good. As you say it also looks pretty useable for other locations. Your stuff always looks so crisply detailed!
-
Damn it James! You come out with this just as Congress decides to cut my wages >:( >:(
Oh well, it goes on my list!

Great stuff! The Boshin War... ;)

Thanks chaps :)
More to follow at the weekend I reckon.

I'll try a fresh one tomorrow morning (going to bed now).

Got some paint on the first one and rather pleased with the result :)
For the kit the door will be cast from either resin or metal and the roof tiles will be stuck ontom the roof plate all ready to go. I haven't got enough tile sheet to do the roof at the moment but that will change at the weekend.

The shop that was mentioned has had to have some tweaks made to it so that'll be posted at a later date (end of the weekend hopefully).

You said it was too hot to paint lol
Looking good as always :)
-
Oooh!
That has come out very well, sir.
I like that!
:-*
You said it was too hot to paint lol
It is!
I couldnt even get the pidgeon poo right on my latest attempt.
-
Too hot to paint figures certainly but spraying and inking are fine :D
cheers
James
-
That looks excellent. Very tempting. :-*
Did you see the Rurouni Kenshin movie by chance? It's based on a manga, so not very realistic (at all), but it's set in early Meji period, so may offer some inspiration here and there (mostly in the first half, when we see more of the setting).

I might just have a gander at that later today.

I like a lot!

Pretty cool. Going to have to check it out

Finished the brick kura and started on a shop :)
The shop is a bit too large as it is but I've altered the drawing and will re-cut soon. I'm carrying on with the first one as it seems pointless to bin it as it still works as a building.
AS with all my flat pack kits, the roof is removable and the floor in the shop is also removable (more on which later).
Shop first, just the front done for now...

And then the finished kura...

Love the brick/stone work on these.

Made a coastal battery tht will fit with my other terrain boards and as soon as there are enough figures I'll get a game in ;)
Blue foam construction, scored block work and then a thick texture of sand, filler and glue painted to match (hopefully) the rest of my boards.

Needs some guns and will make a start on them after our next show (Colours). There will also need to be some naval power and I'm hoping to make a couple of the paddle steamers that took part.
cheers
James
-
Great new items James, how big the range will be? And are there still more "normal" Victorian era buildings in the pipeline?
-
Cheers matey :)
To be honest the range could be huge but as much as I would like to do it all it wouldn't be fiscally feasible :(
It probably won't stop me though :D
Working on a few more buildings at the moment but with normal work being so busy at the moment it's difficult to fit them in with everything else.
cheers
James

That's rather nice too (just posted on another thread)

Looking forward to these paddle steamers!

Where you gonna put 'em, though?
Have you been offered accomodation in the staff quarters at Malamute Mansions yet?

Wow!
I have to follow this thread :o :o :o

Something a little different for the period and probably not a kit but useful and fun nonetheless...
A steamship!
Loosely based on one of the British ships In the Japan area around 1862-63. Only the basic deck and a couple of guns assembled for now but I'll be in work tomorrow and will get the wooden deck, masts and hopefully the sides sorted.
The guns are from HLBSC and although I could quite easily make my own time is precious at the moment ::)

It measures 560mm in length and 140mm across the beam although I think I might have to make it a little wider given the size of the guns.
More to follow tomorrow :)
cheers
James

thats cool, really like those guns, who makes them?

I think he will make a Mars version of it next :)
Looks like a great start James!

Long over due update but this hasn't been idle :)
A couple of figures in the form of Shogunate officers (troops still being mounted on painting stands at he moment).
Quick piccies and better ones will be taken when the troop are done.

I'll dig the British residency out as well and do some more on that soon and then it'll be game time :D
cheers
James

Amazing work, I like a lot the jimbaori.
Can't wait to see more!
-
ooh, very nice, planning on picking up some packs at Warfare so I can build up my forces, great work as usual Mr Bibbly
-
Thanks chaps :)
I might get myself some more at Warfare as well :D
cheers
James
-
I did get some more :D
But the original first unit is almost done, just straps and guns to go but in the meanwhile here are the two officers with finished bases and a new commander (slightly out of focus).
The commander is a Copplestone naval figure with a simple head swap, quite suitable I think :)

Good job, he looks the part.
-
Great looking figures! I like the gloss coat- very nice touch.
-
Ah-Ha! Uncovered another Bibbles thread??! Oh golly. lol lol
I like the embankment with wooden retaining wall.
Cheers
Matt.
-
Nice! Bac Ninh head fit very well with Copplestone boby, good work!
Waiting to see your first unit, Shogunate or Imperial?
-
Thanks chaps :)
Waiting to see your first unit, Shogunate or Imperial?
Shogunate so they can fight the Brits :)
-
These are coming along very nicely, looking forward to seeing more. Just undercoated my next brits yesterday and will carry on today, and plan on ordering more Bac Ninh figs before christmas.
One quick question, what happened to the buildings, will they be made available?
-
How many wonderful projects are you working on at the moment James?
-
Thanks gents :)
One quick question, what happened to the buildings, will they be made available?
They will be but not this year. After Salute probably, they've taken a back burner as more research has been gained.
How many wonderful projects are you working on at the moment James?
Not as many as I used to be lol
Finally finished the first unit :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Meiji%20Edo/622B76F7-45C3-4651-8816-63E1A47F4468_zps9rjnlxy5.jpg)
Got another primed and based ready to go. Might do a set up next week as I'm away this weekend.
cheers
James
-
Wow! Great work James! :)
-
:-* They look great
-
Not as many as I used to be lol
cheers
James
They'll all in the abandoned project log ;) lol
Nice brushwork they look great, can't wait to get a game in with them, after a suitable breakfast of course :D
-
How much difference is there between the standard black/blue uniforms and the summer white uniforms, and what side wore them, would be nice to paint up a unit or two
-
How much difference is there between the standard black/blue uniforms and the summer white uniforms, and what side wore them, would be nice to paint up a unit or two
Bit of a late reply I'm afraid. Not entirely sure there were any white summer uniforms in the Boshin wars, I think it was developed as the army became more standardised.
I've renamed the thread as with the Perry releases for the BIF got me to thinking of a project for this year (and the next, and the next ad infinitum ;) )...
The British Invasion of Japan!
I'll do a bit of research into it to see if it could've been plausible but I don't mind if it isn't as it's a bloody good excuse for an outing :D
The first 'new' figure complete for this is one of the Rorkes Drift character figures but given different coloured hair and slightly different clothes.

I've got a couple of these sets and they are a joy to paint. I know the purists won't be happy (not entirely sure myself) as to mixing these with the Perry figures but what the hell :D
These are the rest of the Brits I've got on the go at the moment and there will be more to follow as this project takes shape :)
Yes, I'm afraid that is Colour Sergeant Bourne with a head swap ;D
cheers
James
-
Lovely paintwork James. I've done a few of those Empress character set figures which Keith very kindly gave me. I think they're amongst Mr Hicks' finest work. Just lovely.
Looks like an interesting project too :)
-
Cheers Richard, they are a joy to paint and seeing as I'm not doing Zulu Wars it'll have to do to plonk them here ;)
cheers
James
-
Great project, will be following this thread with interest.
-
Splendid, I love that Perry bif range, cracking sideburns beards ect in that part of the victorian period.
-
Shimonoseki Stockade anyone?
I think John Knox Laughton, naval educator, and later one of the founders of the Naval History course at King's College fought on that.
-
Thanks chaps :)
I'm going to base most of the action at Hakodate in Hokaido and start it a little bit before the real Boshin war ended (Dec 1868 most likely).
cheers
James

Unexpected twist - will follow with interest.

I like the sounds of this, mate.
I have a few bits and pieces that you can use for this, so I shall bring them along on Beerday.

A great idea using two wonderful figure ranges. This is going on the project list.

55 Days in Tokyo :D

Really nice looking building!

Great idea!
-
Very cool Jim. :)
-
Excellent work!!! ;)
-
nice painting and great idea for using the BIF :)
-
Thanks again gents :)
Got a new building on the go. It's a company storehouse based on a real one in Hakodate, unfortunately the real one was built in 1907 so I'm going to cheat a little bit, alter it and pretend it was around 40 years earlier than it should've been lol
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Meiji%20Edo/E4ECCF6E-F6F4-4490-BDD4-9C25772D45F3_zpst9tzefxq.jpg)

Not the best photos as I'm still arranging my desk :?
Just the bare bones for now and the roof still to design but hopefully the idea is there. Got a lot of storage items to make as well ::)

Woke up at 4:00 this morning with the start of a manky cold but converted these Perry ACW gun crew into Shogunate ones.
Inspiration from OllyReeds great thread here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65978.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=65978.0)
Just some strip styrene added to make the belts and 'webbing' with the odd cartridge pack and of course some head swaps. I had a look in one of my books to see if I could get away without adding the longer jacket and it would appear so :)

Looks good, never realised they were ACW. 8) 8)
Hope the manky cold remains as described and doesn't coagulate into the sort of congestive mess I've had for a week... :(
-
They work for me, mate.
Good idea.
8) 8)
And good to see that you are struggling on manfully through this cold.....although I thought Northerners didn't get colds....or are you getting soft now that you have moved down here??
;D ;D

Thanks chaps :)

By the way, are you forgot the clan emblem on left sleeve? ;)

Styrene webbing... Genius!
-
The building looks great, and the timing of the shogunate artillery is uncanny as I recieved my Armstrong gun couple of days ago to convert to shogunate. Your conversion will be far superior though and I will copy many of your ideas if that's okay :D
-
Great work with the artillery chaps! 8)
-
Styrene webbing... Genius!
It's quite malleable as well once you get the chlory on it.
and I will copy many of your ideas if that's okay :D
Steal away as it was you who gave the idea for the ACW gunners 8)
cheers
James
-
It's quite malleable as well once you get the chlory on it.
Chlory?
Had never thought of using styrene in this way so keen to pick up any tips.
-
Dichloromethane, basically Plastic Weld. A plastic solvent in liquid form applied with a brush (preferably).
Interestingly, trichloromethane is chloroform o_o

Inspired by Olyreed's desire to do a Boshin demo game next year I did a bit more on the large warehouse.
I've made the doors and hinged them (of which much swearing took place). The brass rod is 1mm with a 0.5 hole in it and the hinges themselves are 0.5mm piano wire... They were a shit to stick on but they work :D
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk138/jimbibbly/Meiji%20Edo/D0541CB0-039E-409D-96CE-E6381ECFFA06_zpsrhkua9yz.jpg)

I'll do the rest before painting completely and I've got the structure for the roof as well now.

Been a bit ill again but I managed to knock up a Shogunate standard bearer...

The arm is from the commander with the raised katana and there's a simple head swap (and a bit of 'greystuff' to hide the joins).

James

Now that looks great. Consider that idea kindly borrowed
-
Looks great! I want try that idea. ;)
-
I just found all this, and I like what I'm seeing. :)
The Empress guys modified look great indeed. I would never have thought of any of these ideas.
I'll be following from now on.

Now, thank you to your book I want one of those artillery sets to do the same!! >:( lol, another project that is making me feel lazy. I got another 24 men units from Rokurota at SALUTE, I need to find the right moment...
-
Thanks peeps :)
Here are my LPL entries that I did for this project and when I get home I'll post a group shot of everything so far (not much I'm afraid lol)
The British troops below are obviously the Rorke's Drift set from Empress but I thought they would make good character figures for this project. I'm not too worried about the disparity in period (there's only 10-15 years between them).

Great work, like a lot!

They all look great but that artillery piece is something special!
-
Very nice!
-
Excellent! I voted for them every time.....except when I didn't ;)
-
Excellent work!! ;)

Belated thanks chaps :)
Doing some small houses of the period of which there a surprising amount left intact in Hakodate. I had another look at one of the previous buildings I'm doing just to check a detail (on Google street view) and decided to have a 'walk around' and there's plenty of original building still left. Almost enough to warrant going back there lol
I've only cut one out so far, the rest are being drawn but it's not turned out too badly. Ignore the holes in the roof plates, these will be covered by tile sheeting.

I always love your builds mate! That roof is a bit weird! Whats with the round holes?
-
Andy - that's two from two indicating that you're clearly not reading the accompanying text. Get some sleep - you won't have time during BLAM. ;)
-
Cheers fellas :)
That roof is a bit weird! Whats with the round holes?
I needed some 30mm bases and as this is getting covered (as pointed out by Karsten ;) ) I thought I might as well save me a bit of material :)

I see pretty pictures, i comment! Reading is too intellectual for me!! ;)
-
That is an absolute cracker :-* The fact that it can also serve as a piggy bank for the nimble fingered is just an added bonus.
-
Very nice, the new building, even with the round roof windows (yes, I read they will be covered), but when do we get to see some new troops? :)
-
Very nice! :-*

Decide to look at the steamship again after playing Shogun Total War: Fall of the Samurai. I think the ships are fairly generic and I e spent a long time trying to research what sort of ships would've been in the locale at the time with limited (at least as far as images go) success.
So, I'm going to stick with STW:FS and improvise and make accurate where I can.

Still a long way to go of course and my main worry is getting the side planking right of which a tester can be seen above.
I'm sure it will work out in the end :)
-
Great start! 8)
That planking looks good so far me thinks.
You seem to churn out things on all fronts now! :D

Very nice, reminds me of something else you were building... :D

Yeah, I noticed that ::) lol

Well, I've actually painted my first full figures since last years LPL, talk about burn out lol
Two British naval officers from Copplestone, lovely sculpts and something quite simple to get back in the swing of painting.

Currently got some more Japanese and Brits on the go. To be honest I got inspired by the Perry article in this months WI, 'The Battle for Fort Ontario'. Seeing all those red coats got my mojo up and running :D
cheers
James
-
Nicely done, mate.
:-*
Good to see you have your brush wielding mojo back.
That is one of the reasons I avoid the LPL....my painting mojo is delicate enough at the best of times.
Now I am considering seeking out WI this month..... ::)
-
Nice work mr. JB :)
More to come soon?
-
Nice painting James!
-
Many thanks gents :)
More to come soon?
Oh yes, maybe even tonight :o
cheers
James

Great minis and great, painting. I read the Perry article at the weekend, those redcoats would look great in a Japanese setting

Oh yes, maybe even tonight :o

Careful!

Very nice mate! ;)

Lush.

Most excellent James

Cheers again fellas :)
Clamour and you shall receive ;)
The infantry man is actually a conversion using a Perry BIF body and a Bac Ninh head, seems to work quite well. Still a nobori to go on the pole but it's late.

How large forces you need to wage a war? :)

Quick question, how are the houses you were doing for this period coming along?
your getting a great collection together, looking forward to seeing more

Nice! :)

Top job Bibbly-San 8)

wonderful work, can i ask what paints you use for your Japanese skin, i am getting frustated with the ones I use
-
It's the Foundry oriental triad. I did have my own mix but gw changed their colours and it eventually ran out.
cheers
James

Lovely stuff, especially the Brits ;D
You most definitely have found your painting Mojo again. ;)
-
Very nice James, I want to see the nobory finished and some Satsuma guys. ;)

Well done, sir.
That middle Brit looks especially good.
:-* :-*

He certainly has.
Full throttle from the Flapmeister!

Top brushwork there Mr Bibbly

Very nice hilighting on the dark blue. I think I am overdoing them on my dark colors.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Very nice hilighting on the dark blue. I think I am overdoing them on my dark colors.
To be honest, they look totally wrong before varnishing. It took me a few attempts to realise this. The highlights are used sparingly and only on the upper edges.
cheers
James
-
Very nice Bibbles. Is the naval uniform done in the same colours as the Japanese one?
I'm currently ignoring a twitch to do Port Arthur Russians.
-
Is the naval uniform done in the same colours as the Japanese one?
It is yes. Keeps it easy as I can paint both types at the same time if necessary.
Scratch that itch :D

Just looking through this thread again for inspiration, I know the French and USA were there around the same time, would you know what minis you would use for these?
-
Not at the moment no although I do have a couple of (slightly blurry) photos of a model at the Goryokaku fort observation deck/museum. It's of a meeting between Perry and Japanese officials. The figures dipicted are marines but they would certainly do for figures in a wargame of it. I haven't looked to see if there is anything suitable yet though.
Quite possibly Franco-Prussian war figures for the French (and Germans) and Footsore are doing a range for them as the Foundry ones might be a bit small.

The twins are everywhere. Is it Allan or Michael?
-
These could work for US?
-
For me, they could work very well.
-
I suppose it depends on whether you want them in dress uniforms or fatigues. If fatigues then just use US figures from the Mexican American War. Old Glory and First Corps both do 28mm ranges although neither is especially pretty.
-
Dress uniform always looks good ;)
Looks like another Foundry order will be going in then ::)
cheers
James

this might need a bit of work but a possibility, I will stop at this as I am derailing your thread, sorry

Ordered the foundry pack, will put up a comparison when i get them through

Got some more figures done for this project. It's ticking along nicely :)
First some more Brits, a standard bearer and two infantry. Also a very small unit shot.

Some more terrain next I think :)

Great figures, everyone else has covered what I could say about them.
But I must add your clear movement trays looks great too especially the curvy command one, I assume since you obviously have a laser cutter you did them yourself.

Jim this is, as always, top shelf.
I have a question, however, as my mind seems to work somewhat differently than yours:
Your builds are very tidy, do you ever consider making (or modding) your building to a more crooked, organic appearance? Like busting up a straight corner of a building or making them look in a need of some repair?
-
Very nice work!
-
That is very very nice :-*
-
Thanks for the comments chaps :)

It's a good question. The actual building that this one is modelled on is still in good condition and would've been 'perfect' when built as are most of the Japanese building I do.
I suppose for most other buildings there are three main reasons, first is it's easier for me and the laser to produce square edged buildings, secondly it depends on the material (usually acrylic) and thirdly it's the architectural modeller in me ;)
The Spanish buildings I made recently are all wonky as I made them completely from scratch.
The thing to remember is that most buildings for the periods I make are from that period and would be fairly newly built (that's my excuse anyway ;) ).
cheers
James

Totally get this (that's why I am strangely drawn to DeafNala's builds). Lovely stuff, as always. And nicely painted too.

Check.
-
Just a quick question, what minis would you use for the British navy of this period?
-
I've bought some of the Copplestone naval brigade. The weapons are a bit out but they are lovely sculpts. There's also the Perry Sudan naval brigade but they're a bit out as well. Depends on how accurate you want them.
cheers
James
-
Don't think anyone will notice what type of weapon they have, will have a look at both

You've probably got the below image but just in case.

Got my shinsengumi order through and am currently cleaning them up (not much cleaning to do to be honest) but I thought I'd do a little conversion of a leader figure, and here he is.

It's a Perry samurai head and a plastic Perry ACW pistol arm. Hopefully just different enough to look the part :)
I'm going to be painting some of my own stuff this weekend and he will be part of that (along with the shinsengumi).
cheers
James

Nice work, looking forward to seeing him coloured in matey :)

Very original! ;)

We're going to be playing a small Boshin game next week and I thought I'd get a possible couple of buildings finished for it.
I've had this one in a state of almost completeness for a while now so it's a good opportunity to finish it off. A very simple build and based on one in Hakodate.

Hope you take plenty of pics
😁
-
That's looking great, we want pictures!
By the way, we could to see Shinsengumi? ;)
-
Got the building done. It look very European but many of the newer builds of the period were. For some of them it was jst the roof that would distinguish them from the 'originals'.

Battle is on Thursday and the report will probably be done the following weekend.
By the way, we could to see Shinsengumi? ;)
They are primed so who knows o_o
-
Lovely, James :-* Very interesting too.
Yeah, it is (to ignorant me) European in appearance. When I casually glanced at the first post on it I actually read Hakodate as Harrogate ..... o_o :)
-
Really nice James! I have seen that that board (fascia?) below the eave line in Pre-WWII Japanese architecture in the Pacific (nanyo). It seems sort of a signature. Do you have any insight/ words of wisdom that you can pass on about this for us working in this region?
Lon
-
your collection is growing nicely and all looks very impressive!
-
Thanks gents :)
Do you have any insight/ words of wisdom that you can pass on about this for us working in this region?
Lon
Not much I'm afraid Lon. As far as I can gather it's purely decorational although there might be a connection with the eaves of early buildings extending quite a way over the walls for store buildings as Japan can have quite heavy rain in it's monsoon season.
cheers
James
-
