Khosindan Aeronef - WIP
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:49:31 AM »
Bullshott has very kindly donated a plastic toy ship to the Dirka Dirka Industries R&D Department. Stamped on the underneath 'Spectra 1992 Made in China'. The ship is made of hard plastic with the exception of the yellow (soft plastic) insert at the bows. This will be removed and replaced.

The original ship

Taken apart - this was nice and easy, just removing the phillips screws from the hull

Precision engineering at its best - addition of a 15mm diameter copper tube to take the flight stand, secured in place with large amount of hot glue and a piece of balsa.

I've removed the moulded quarterdeck with a dremel so I can replace it with a lower one, giving the crew more protection and reducing the overall height of the model

Quaterdeck cleaned up and refitted to the hull with a block of balsa glued in place to support the new wooden deck. The new main deck is also in place - this is made of real wood planking that comes in 4" wide sheets from the local model boat shop.

More pics to follow as work progresses. Not sure if this should be in the workbench area, please feel free to move it if it should.

Photos of my recent efforts are at www.littleleadmen.com and https://beaverlickfalls.blogspot.com

Wonderful stuff it looks great already. ;D

Its fine to stay where it is, its too good for Hammers workbench ;)

Can't wait to see it in action, when I will simply have to shoot it down :D

Well said that man!

Looking forward to seeing this one finished Dr D. Let's hope there's no more secret missions to Angola to slow you down!  ;)

Did a few bits on the nef today;

Added an 8mm aluminium tube to support the engine and propeller assembly. This goes through the plastic hull beneath the quaterdeck and is secured in a block of balsa glued to the internals of the ship. Parts of the hull have been sprayed matt black to check for imperfections and to see how the plastic takes paint.

Rear of the nef showing the engine/boler assembly and the prop. Smoke stack is from a Wild Wild West steam tank

Close up of the engine rivets

Wooden decking fitted and stained. The cannon is from a plastic pirate playset - not sure if it will make the final model or be replaced with a gatling gun.

Next up, working out how to steer the thing.

I love the way that in a few days you've turned something that was, basically, a couple of fairly crappy pieces of plastic into... well, is it over the top to call it a work of art?

Marvellous job. The smokestack is crazy, but somehow right, and the massive propellor... preposterous! In the best traditions of VSF engineering. Really looking forward to the next update!
