Chinese style figures for Frostgrave?
« on: December 10, 2015, 11:10:41 PM »
I had this old Helldorado box lying around and thought it would make a nice start on a Chinese style Frostgrave warband. This forum has a vast knowledge of figures, so anyone know of any other figures that might suit? Preferable in cold weather gear. Alternatively, what about heads that might fit the Frostgrave plastics to make them look more eastern?

The Jade Triad figures for Alkemy come immediately to mind as being of a similar sculpting style. Not cheap, though.

Otherwise, I know people are using Fireforge Mongols for Frostgrave.

Ronin miniatures, maybe? Certainly not perfect, but very good.

What a cool idea. I have minis for Ronin and some of the older Dixon lines. Think I'll have to throw together a Japanese warband (Seven Samurai + wizard & Apprentice).

I have a few sprues of the Fireforge Steppe Warriors ordered. Planning on using the heads and arms on the Frostgrave bodies to create a cold weather Eastern theme.

If you want Chinese, Bac Ninh are good, the rest are Japanese.

What about the excellent Renegade line of miniatures? Their Warring States line is extensive and their models are terrific.

http://www.blackhat.co.uk/product-category/28mm-miniatures/28mm-miniatures-tales-of-the-dragon-kings/

Or some foundry

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/colonial/china-1839-1900/chinese-imperial-lords-and-bandits-collection-bcch001/

The renegades are good but quite big also not many suitable wizard types(i've looked).

Northstar does a couple of good sets

http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=5908
http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=5907

Which have the added bonus of being compatible with frostgrave miniatures.

Having considered he problem myself the main problem is finding suitable 'wizard' minis as many of the miniatures are heavily armoured while the unarmoured tend to be unarmed :/ I've found this to be  a common annoyance, you see some minis that would make for a nice themed warband but they don't/you can't find a suitable wizard/apprentice set that fits in with those you've selected.

Hope this helps.

Foundry has some good chinese models in their catalog:

The only ones that aren't immediately usable are the gun carriers, but there are plenty of the collections that have no gunpowder users.

I say, those Watchful Eye figures are nice! It's reassuring to know that 3D sculpting can produce good-looking flowing fabrics these days.

That general looks tiny on that base, though. Can't tell if it's a 20mm base or a 25mm one. Do we know how well they scale up with other 28mm figures?

Works well! Already did my first two expedition into Frostgrave like that. As apprentice I chose a civil, bend by age, small staff. As wizard another civil. Older, more bend, bigger staff.

Since I wanted to play crossbows - but my Japanese ronin minis did not have them - I used my arquebuse-minis.
best wishes
