I've been messing around with some Colonials of late - mainly because I should be working on my Napoleonic project, but the innate perversity of the wargamer asserts itself.
I had some HAT German Colonials that I didn't really want to use as advertised, so I've trimmed some of the more military kit from them and painted them as a sort of volunteer rifles unit, but that could also be used as African explorers.
You can find a bit more about them here.
http://joyandforgetfulness.blogspot.ie/2015/05/the-po-rifles.html I called them the Post Office Rifles, but a chum pointed out that any unit called "Utility+Location+Military Formation" is a unit that one could be justly proud of. With that in mind, I offer the Victorian Volunteer Regiment Name Generator.
