Title: Kulten On Kickstarter?
Post by: Uncle Mike on July 16, 2012, 03:59:33 PM
As we move forward with Kulten I am considering a Kickstarter campaign. I am waffling on the idea as I have some apprehensions of going this route. Figured I might ask around here and see what you guys think. All thoughts and comments appreciated.

Best Regards,
Uncle Mike

It can be a great way to get larger exposure for your game. Just take a look at the recent Zombicide and Sedition Wars ks campaigns; they are great examples of well planned campaigns that far outstretched initial expectations. I would support Kulten on kick starter, but will support it whichever route you chose.

As an aside, if you're coming down to Trilogy this week I'd love to play another game with the new Kulten rules. I'm sure your ghouls would like some payback.

Sure why not give it a go? If it fails you carry on with your previous plans. I will surely back you.

me too, have backed a few kickstarters already, it's quite a painless process from the customer end,

I would invest, just make sure to give enough of a window to allow me to have some money to toss your way after bills...

The pain in the arse looks like the "rewards" you have to set, but it would help offset some costs of printing....so there is some evil with the good...

Any specific reservations?

Just remember that individuals without an U.S. Amazon account can't pledge, so don't judge market interests solely on the funding you get through KS :)

Indeed, I read something about UK citizens being able to do this as well, but I didn't realize it was possible yet. Even better, but still not enough! ;)

Some of these issues may be moot, as if we do elect to go this route, it may well be with a service other than Kickstarter, seeing as the project owner has to be a US citizen and resident.

Cherno - the US citizen/resident requirement and the upcoming UK operation are about who can raise money via Kickstarter, not about who can subscribe.

It seems like a sensible option to me.

I agree with Relic.
If it does not work, you can always go back toyour original idea.

I think the key thing will be working out the rewards.
If they are attractive enough to non-SA players, and have more of a universal appeal, you may be more sucessful.
Saying that, you cannot really go wrong with Cultists....

Thanks for the clarification. So I guess I'll rephrase my original statement to "Not everyone that would like to pledge can do so" ;)

Kickstarter only allows the use of a credit card as payment options for backers.

I don't use my CC online anymore after having $10G stolen from my account this way, so I wont back kickstarter projects for that reason (I am looking at getting a pre paid card with limited funds on it though).

I have backed other projects by similar schemes that accept paypal though.  Find one that accepts pay pal and I would be happy to back to project.

indiegogo lets you pay by paypal, Tor Gaming used it for their recent Nuem funder with quite a bit of success

Not true, I use debit card which takes the payment from bank account.

I'd support a Kickstarter release ... just make sure you have those stretch goals ready, you'll need them!

Please remember, that not all of us have a credit card, or other means of international payment. Kickstarter is good for a guess if there is a market. I'd be very dissapointed when my local trader doesn't get one for me because it was only availbable on Kickstarter, or only for a too short period of time after the release. (that happened to me with the Fate Deck, and both Shocking Tales issues  :'( )

Visit : http://www.kickstarter.com/ (http://www.kickstarter.com/)

There are similar sites but essentially ... If you want to do/make something and you are not sure how popular it's going to be you can start a project and ask people to pledge money to it. If you get enough people ("Backers") pledging money then the project will get funded and you can go ahead safe in the knowledge that you have the minimum amount of interest you need.

People that pledge money usually get something in return; typically it's the item that's produced. Differing amounts of pledges usually gain greater rewards and projects that get over funded usually provide "stretch goals"; in other words the extra money it put into more benefits for the backers. If a project fails to get funding no one gets charged anything.

Quite a few companies have been using sites like kickstarter to minimise thier risk, of course Kickstarter takes a percentage. Some of the over funded projects are mind blowing, check out OGRE.

Uncle Mike,

Sounds like you may have image concerns with this or be worried about the impression it gives your audience? I think the image is fine. I wouldn't know what to say about the financial part of KS since there is no standard of comparison with the outlay you had with SA and what KS may entail (or relieve, as hoped). I'm guessing it makes sense for you or you wouldn't have asked.

All of that said, if you think it is less risk and a better product for all of us then I'd say that's a vote to use it. I'm not seeing a downside to this yet.

Good luck either way. I'll keep making terrain for the game while you decide...  ;)

Same thing really - you have to type your card number in.  I still lost $10G from credit card fraud even though my card was a debit card.

Haven't backed a KS yet, though looked at a few. Think i would back Kulten as a KS, though will probably pick it up regardless.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to know what people thought about the idea...not sold on it myself as I don't know enough about it either way. From a production point of view it could really help with the print runs being bigger. Still not sure which way we will go but I am grateful for the support!
