The plan here is to construct two retinues from a couple of boxes of Perrys to use at School for a wargames club.

As we're based in The People's Republic of Yorkshire, I'm going with a generally Percy vs Neville feel in terms of livery.

First up we have our first unit, Yorkist Men at Arms:

The more historically minded of you will notice that I've quartered the tunics rather than going with the more accurate Percy halved tunic. This was purely because I fancied having black and red in quarters and whim trumps accuracy every time for me. This is probably not an admirable attitude for a history teacher.

Next up will be the first Neville-style unit of Men at Arms.

I like the quartered scheme, so if it works for you, does it really matter if it is 100% historically accurate? This is art as much as history and I'm sure the kids will love it

Nice start to a great project.  I applaud the 'whim over accuracy' which is one I follow most of the time.  One thought though - who's livery are you meant to be portraying?  ???

If I recall correctly, Richard Neville (Earl of Warwick) livery was red, his brother John Neville was Red and Black as was his father (Salisbury). There are various other branches who wore Green and White (Abgavenny)  and Blue and White (Fauconberg). So far so good.  :)

The bad news is that the Percy livery colours are also Black and Red (despite his standard being red and yellow).   o_o

Good luck with trying to work out which side was which.!!  ??? ???

Good stuff. Don't know about Lion Rampant - still haven't tried it. But I firmly believe the forum needs as many WotR projects as humanly possible. We can never be too medieval  ;)

That blued armour looks a wee bit psychadelic though  o_o
May I recommend to you, Vallejo Modelcolor no. 800 'Gunmetal Blue'? Cut with a little black for the basecoat, and cut with a little silver for the highlight coat - perfect for blued plate (in my humble op).

...whim trumps accuracy every time for me. This is probably not an admirable attitude for a history teacher.

My approach precisely. Good man  8)
I'm a historian too (well, I've got a history degree, at any rate). But I'd much rather my toy soldiers looked the business, than were 110% historically accurate. I never cease to be amazed about how many wargamers obsess over pinpoint historical accuracy ahead of visual impact - as though it matters in an inch-high figure! Whereas visual impact matters very much when those inch-high figures are viewed en masse from a few feet away. Ah, well - whole different argument there. Suffice to say - nothing wrong with your approach that I can see  :)

Keep 'em coming.

PS. Any chance of slightly bigger piccies?  :)

Percys and Nevilles Good call! Nice looking figures too.  :)

I recall we had a thread here in which we talked about liveries and the topic of the Percy/Neville similarities came up. Bearing in mind John Neville wasn't a major player at first he *may* have taken on Percy red and black when he became 'Northumberland'. Livery colours weren't static, so while we have some of the colours for people, we usually don't have the 'when' to go with them.

Sometimes the books don't help either, as you often see 'three colour liveries' included for the WotR, which were strictly a 'HenryVIII' onwards phenomenon. I go for accuracy in research... but on the tabletop 'whim' wins out.
 ;)

Thanks all.

The blue was vallejo transparent blue over the basecoat; the rather... Shall we say 'vibrant'? end result is because I did another watered down coat over the highlight. I'll probably try to dull it back down with a black wash when I do a final pass over all the miniatures. I'll certainly try the 800 next time, though.

To be honest, I'm thinking of cheating and going with a white and blue livery for my ersatz Lancastrian Nevilles. As we know there were a lot of the Lancastrian mob who utilised those colours so I could always go with a very minor - hitherto unknown - branch of the family. My main thinking here is that Black/red and White/blue will give a great visual contrast on the table. Plus my wife likes them :)

Clicking on the piccies should take you to bigger versions.

So the first unit of alleged Nevilles is done:

I think the two contrasting colour schemes work well, which was the main thing I was after:

Next up, some Percy longbowmen.

Very nice paint jobs and like you wrote, the chosen colors on liveries will work nicely on the table.

Will these be only for gaming or teaching about WOTR period as well? If the latter, what have you in mind?

In terms of using them as a teaching aid, it would mean I'd have to lose the Trafalgar wargame which currently goes down a treat.

Finished the first unit of archers for the Percy retinue. Tabletop standard only, I'm afraid:

Next up, Neville archers!

I'll have you know that the most recent archeological evidence suggests that the Battle of Towton was fought in deep jungle.

I would have gone for "Early Portuguese expedition to Angola against the Fukawe tribe" myself.  ;)

Nicely done figures though.  :)
