I figured it was worth seperating my fantasy output from my sci fi one over here https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=123773.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=123773.0)
Here's the last fantasy stuff I've been working on - currently all up on the mammoth miniatures webstore.
https://mammoth-miniatures.onlineweb.shop/
(https://i.imgur.com/yabFKsB.jpg)
The ogre mercenary - Kind of a pig to cast in one piece, I may make a new mould later with a separate axe head.
The alchemist - I just wanted to sculpt a turban.
The half dwarf fighter - He came out shorter than planned, so yeah...he's a half dwarf now.
-
I sculpted up and cast this little giant toad the other day.

Here he is hassling a spaceman, as toads are want to do.
He's up on the webstore now, And I'll probably sculpt some riders/extra critters in the next few weeks.
-
Great sculpt - the painting is also truly amazing.
-
Really nice sculpting and painting!
-
These are terrific! And the toads are extremely useful for all kinds of games.
The 'painterly' style of brushwork is magnificent too!
-
Toad looks fantastic, will be even better with a rider or a pack load. 8)
Quick question re the spaceman - how do you smoke a cigar while wearing a rebreather...?

Okay so I have had the exact same question since I sculpted him - I literally finished him, went to take the sculpt out of the oven and turned to my partner and asked "why did i give him a cigar and a gas mask?" lol
My theory is this - the holes in the mask are designed to filter out particulates, but if you hold a cigar up to one you can safely smoke whilst keeping your lungs free of dangerous space dust.
Honestly you're the only one so far to have asked!

Thankyou! I worry my painting style might not be the best for "selling" the sculpts, But I'm just not a smooth painter.
-
They are good enough for my list ;-). Some really cool stuff over there.
-
That toad is brilliant! Great sculpt, great brushwork.

It's a new month and i've got a new initiative , The mammoth Mini publishing service.
Basically I want to encourage traditional sculpting, but unfortunately the patreon/digital model that has helped so many digital sculptors control their own work isn't viable for many physical sculptors. So what are their options? sell the sculpt for a flat amount , or work for a big company and make someone else designs. Well now there's mini publishing - In short, we will cast sell and distribute your sculpts, and pay you 65% of all profit from every single sale of your sculpt, and you retain the rights to the design.
Once the cost of production has been recouped or the initial agreed run is sold out, we can either cast it on demand and keep it in our mould library, or you can have the mould back.
The first sculptor we're working with is Banhus miniatures, who has produced the first of a range of minis based on medieval manuscript artwork - this lovely big headed giant chap.
-
And now for something completely different!
I carved up this ancient ruined monolith from plaster the other day. yestarday i made a sock mould for it and tried out a rotocast pull of it. I was only using generic polyeurethane resin so there is some delamination present, but the detail captured wonderfully, no bubbled and it keeps the weight (and cost) down. I've got some proper roto resin on the way to produce some better casts.
the mould looking...suspicious
(https://i.imgur.com/SxInlC3.jpg)
The first cast - you can see some delamination under the surface which is caused by a too thick resin falling away during rotation and creating air pockets between layers. this will be solved by using a less viscous resin.
the white colour near the base is just plaster filler that was stuck to the inside oif the mould after pulling out the master sculpt.
It's quite a chunky piece of scenery, but luckily using roto casting means it stays light and should keep it affordable.
-
Have you tried making a plug for it out of scrap rubber so you could do a static pour? Probably wind up with more air bubbles but you wouldn't have to roto-cast that way. Always had difficulty getting consistently good results with that technique myself, although yours looks good.

I did consider it, but i think given the good quality I got from the first test I will do a few more without and see how things go - As it stands I want to avoid bubbles as much as possible, So i don't wiggling the mould around in front of the heater for 5 minutes if that means I get a good quality pull from it :) I'd far rather use the rubber to make new moulds for new sculpts :)
-
Oh absolutely - never waste fresh rubber on a plug. We always used burned-out molds to cut a suitable plug from, but that assumes you have dead molds laying around in the first place.
Nothing wrong with rotocasting if you're comfortable with doing it, which I'm not. Always worried I'd botch my timing and screw up a casting - not helped by the way the phone or the doorbell would always ring the minute I started. Murphy's Law. :)
-
Spent a couple of hours throwing paint at this - I tried to give it a lovecraftian look, with wet mossy stone and age stained plaster.
not an amazing paintjob by any stretch, but good enough for the table.
(and as much as i'm looking forward to casting these in luminous cthulu green, A paintjob helps show the texture)

Cool. Love the moldy crevices.
-
Very nice piece, and the paint job suits it well.
-
Looks nice. Impressively big chunk of resin. Really shows off the Cyclopean scale of building one - every one of those stones must have weighed at least half a ton, probably more. The Egyptian pyramid builders would have approved.

I am nothing if not an admirer of damp crevices.

Ta very much! :)
-
Just a small update - The monolith will go live on the webstore tomorrow. I took delivery of a fresh batch of proper rotocasting resin and got an excellent cast today in the proper eye murdering cthulu green that I originally wanted.
So here it is in all it's painful neon glory.

-
Sorry for the double post, But I just put the monolith up on the webstore :)

I sculpted up this little mutant dude the other day , cast him the next day, and painted him last night/this morning.
I'm really happy with him, He casts well, he's characterful in an oldschool way, and he's pleasingly chunky.
He also got utterly shredded when being removed from the mould so I'll need to make a good master and set it aside for safety sake.
The raw sculpt
(https://i.imgur.com/SrWRsvF.jpg)
The first two sculpts - note the unfilled spear tips - I have fixed that via a new vent, but other than that a perfect cast.
And painted.

And here he is with his fantasy mates - quite a motley bunch.
-
He's a - well - a beauty!
Cracking miniature and paintjob!
-
A fantastic miniature - looks really good and fits in very nicely in the small warband.
-
Tentacle Pete ate my baby!
-
Glad he's gone down well! He's up on the store now :)
-
Trying out something new! A BIG miniature, A three headed , 4 mouthed mutant giant. This chap is sculpted in a 50/50 beesputty and fimo mix, and I've gone to town with skin texture to try and push myself. I'm really happy with where he's at - I have finished him since taking these pictures but here he is in half hand mode.

This has been a real experiment in texture and scale, And a fun little project to push myself. He'll get cast up soon too.
-
Great sculpt. I think you have achieved what you had set out to do.
-
Brilliant! The 'emerging' face on the back is a really nice touch!
-
Ta, Glad he's been well recieved :)
I put the finishing touches on a couple of days ago and he's now submerged in delicious silicone.
-
Impressive. Like the skin texture and expressions. Concept reminds me a bit of this old Dreamblade freak (pardon the garish repaint).
-
It was a bit of a task, but I got him cast! this is the mould for the torso, A whopping KG of silicone.
Both parts came out great first time with only a couple of minor issues that I have now fixed - mostly just a bubbly patch in the foot that needed a bigger vent.
Here he is with some of Mammoths other miniatures - he measures about 80mm and dwarfs everthing else I've put out so far! He'll go up as a pre order in the next few days :)
-
Slapped a bit of paint on the giant - he's still WIP but i'm pleased with how he looks in colour. I should have him up on the shop in a few days.
I will say that my quite painterly (read - messy) approach to adding texture to minis is perhaps not that suited to a mini so covered in texture - I may cast up a second for myself to experiment with a more basic paintjob.
-
Paint job looks fine to me.
-
Superb!
-
That's very nice. Love the grotesque look.
-
Looks great! And as the paintjob holds up in that sort of extreme close-up, I'd wager it looks spectacular on the table.

Cheers! :)
He's now up for order on the shop, and hopefully I can get my own one finished soon.

Been a bit busy to paint anything lately, But I have sculpted up some new stuff and got it cast in my bit of downtime -
My favourite is the walking giant fish, But people seem keen on the cultist body blanks - I originally sculpted those for myself but the response on instagram was that people would like them for their own conversions.
The mutated wizard is an old sculpt I found whilst unpacking, And I figured someone might have use for a sorcerer covered in eyes.
I've also added ome new sci fi stuff, but that's not for this thread :)
-
Weird synchronicity, I was working a fish with legs inspired by some medieval art myself over the weekend. Maybe I'll just grab yours instead...
-
Something new!
I sculpted this last night, cast it today and got it on the site for sale this evening.
I wanted a real oldhammer look for my first dragon, But i also wanted him to be a bit of a chunky unit.
I sculpted this one in monster clay - a lovely material ,but one I've never cast before so I'm really pleased that the casts are coming out perfect.

He's up on the mammoth site now https://mammoth-miniatures.onlineweb.shop/product/scaley-mud-dragon

Well I finally did it, I sat down, powered through, and managed to make awhole figure in Zbrush!
As anyone who has been following my 3D scanning thread https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=137316.msg1756806#msg1756806 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=137316.msg1756806#msg1756806) will know, I have been trying to find workarounds to create STL files of some of my designs as I really struggle with digital modeling. But for some reason I sat down this weekend and it all just clicked ,the scales fell from my eyes and I was able to make a whole figure.
Is it perfect? No, far from it - There is SO MUCH that I need to learn and improve on. I need to unlearn my entire approach to sculpting really. But that hurdle of getting a something that looks like an actual figure done is finally gone!
I have put the STL for this spikey lad up on the planet28 patreon, but right now he's just a stepping stone towards (hopefully) better things.
-
A little rough (or smooth in this case) around the edges but I think it's a great looking figure! 8)
-
Been making some new stuff - A ghoulish man eating giant, A spikey mutant lad, a stoic dwarf and a giant snake. All of these are hand sculpted with the exception of the spikey brute, which is an early digital sculpt. The giant was a great bit of fun to make, and adding a victim into its hands was a nice challenge. he's about 70mm from base to head.
I also sculpted some new ruined standing stones - These were carved from plaster. I may make an altar of centrepiece to go with these.
All of these are up for sale on mammoth miniatures. I've got a few gobliny warriors on my workbench right now.
-
That giant looks great! :o
Goya?!
-
I really like all of your sculpts!
-
Glad people like em! I have also been working on a new range of bronze age fantasy figures with a bit of a moebius style for a future game which I'm excited to show off.

Oh that sounds awesome! Please tell us more.
-
New stuff!
It's been a quiet week at work so I took some time to do some sculpting. I've wanted to make a large undead lich/king/ancient hero for a while so i quickly sculpted this chap in about 3 hours in-between fielding student questions and regular bouts of "please don't set fire to yourself".
He's about 50mm tall so he'd work as a large enemy for 40mm fantasy games, but I personally think of him as a great and mighty hero from a by gone age, a giant slayer brought back to life by foul magic or perhaps summoned by the pleas of his descendants.
I've also started a range of skeletons to accompany this mighty lad in his various boney quests. And I sculpted this space bastard type character , who makes a going point of showing how big the lich is.
(Ignore the nails - I spend most of my workday mixing plaster or covered in clay.)
The lich and space dude are both already cast and up on the mammoth miniatures store, and I'll hopefully have some more skeletons up for sale soon.
https://www.mammothminiatures.com/
-
Nice! 8)
That skeleton could easily double as a wight too. Should you be making several of them, I think I might just have found the perfect LotR Barrow Wights!
-
Now those are well cool.
-
After selling out of them at salute, I have put the skeletons up on the website along with a few other new sculpts.
https://www.mammothminiatures.com/product/skeleton-warriors
I also recently finished a witch, a summoned demon, and a large dinosaur sculpt as well as some fantasy guards to go with a dagger wielding warrior queen.
-
Great stuff! :-*
-
Here's the raw sculpts of my recent fantasy minis - The dinosaur was very nearly a dragon but I decided i wanted a more crystal palace look to him. The witch was mostly an experiment in hair and cloth. The summoned demon was all about trying out elemental textures, and the second skeleton was just because I wanted to sculpt more fancy hats.
Also as a little aside - I made this little green man bust as a donation to the third year fine art students I teach, for their degree show fundraiser auction.
I had him copper plated and patinad, then mounted to a small chip of marble. I forgot to actually get pictures of the finished bust.
-
Love the
dragon dinosaur! And the undead are absolutely stonking
-
Nice sculpts, I especially like the axe-wielding skeleton.
-
Glad to see these up for sale. Going to have to get an order in.
-
Both the witch and the second skellie are on my wishlist now (together with that first skeleton) :-*
-
I'd managed to miss this thread, possibly because the images are blocked at work (boo).
However, looking at them on my tablet, there are a few figures that are likely to join the mountain in the not too distant future :D
-
Brilliant sculpting!
-
wonder and classic
-
I just ordered the two skellies; they're too cool to not to :D
Will the witch become available too?
-

she already is - I went with Summoner instead of witch as it felt a bit more open.

Crud, I couldn't find her for some reason... :?
Is there a way we can add her to my order?

If you send me an email with your order number I will sort it for you :)

Awesome; email sent through your webstore :)

I've been slightly too rushed to update this thread but I thought I'd get back on top of it since i've done plenty of new stuff in the last few months. My latest release is one of my biggest - the Wyrm!
This was a sculpt done in monster clay, which gave me alot of freedom to mess with texture and form - I was originally torn on whether to add wings but I'm glad I kept him flightless, he's got a real slithery look to him as a result.
I've also released this tower tank!
and this swordsman who I'm still very pleased with -
(https://i.imgur.com/jXWJGro.jpeg)
And I've been messing around more with hybrid sculpting and 3d scanning - Anyone that spoke to me at salute this year would have seen this big lad next to me - I sculpted the figure at a nice action man size as a rough sketch, then scanned it and refined the resulting mesh to create my event exclusive mini.
and I had this initial test figure I made a few weeks ago - I've tried him out in multiple scales (the painted one is 20mm) but I wasn't happy with the hands on the actual clay so he sits on my desk as an example piece for students.
most of these bits are up on the mammoth miniatures website now - the Wyrm is brand new this weekend having had his debut at salute (and selling out!)
-
That wyrm is marvelous! :-*
And the masked/helmeted cultist types are really cool too...
-
I like those 8)
-
Great sculpts!
-
Gorgeous :-*
-
Happy to see the dragon has proved popular!
I have a whole range of these guys sculpted up that I haven't photographed yet, but here's the latest of my rust goblins - little armoured bastards.
This is the standard bearer. The first cast was a miscast so i slapped a shield on him and made a champion of him to test the colour scheme I'll use for promo images.
At present the rust goblin range consists of this chap, a war priest, a set of 3 warriors, and an armoured war beast with pikeman crew.
Also this is a digital sculpt I did a little while ago as I get more and more to grips with working digitally.
-
The armoured goblin is ace! 8)
How do these compare with GW goblins? They might make a really cool armoured bodyguard to my chieftain.
The bearded guy is mildly disturbing though... lol
-
Is that a giant gnome...? o_o
-
I really like that rust goblin sculpt!
-
Love the rust goblin- fantastic sculpt, and your paintjob makes it even more awesome :-*
-
Slightly different -
I'm working on a little game system at the moment, part of which is based on the fantasy writings of William Morris (he of wallpaper and socialism fame) as a result I'm doing lots of little character illustrations in a arts and crafts/early art nouveau style.
I was inspired by mark copplestones little soldiers to try and give a more stylised sculpt a go, so i made this 54mm knight in which i tried to copy my own style of drawing. Initially I engraved patterns into the putty but I found it was visually messy so I buffed it back to the flat. As an experiment it's got some way to go, I think the style needs work before I'd call myself happy with it, but I like the 54mm scale for a sort of period turn of the century fantasy figure, and I think there's potential in it.
I'll probably just keep this one for myself.
-
Had a quiet day at work so I bashed out this fishman miniature - I may do a few more of them since he was a fun sculpt.
I was originally just trying to do a really quick sculpt to put inside the gumball machine I just bought for shows, but I got distracted by using a paintbrush and dissolved putty to make veins and spikes.
-
Both very nice!
-
The more stylized knight is quite cool, so is the fishmen. What ratio do you use for the dissolved putty?
-
That fishman looks really great!
-
If you do sculpt some more of those fishmen (and armoured goblins), I will be obliged to put in another order!
They're looking exceptional again; you really do have a distinct sculpting style, and I like a lot...
-
It's been fairly quiet at work so I'm getting a few more figures done than usual - here's a fresh skeleton warrior, the first of what I hope to be a handful of skeletal spearmen.
-
I really like that skeleton. Very nice work.
-
Fantastic skeleton! Really nice style :)
-
Fantastic skeleton! Really nice style :)
Nice indeed, the style reminds me on Mörk Borg a little.
-
Great stuff! I like the Mignola-esque look to them!
-
Cheers for the kind words. :) I got another skelly done at work yesterday (quite where all the students have gone I've no idea but I'm not going to look a gift skeleton in the mouth) .
-
Love that skeleton. The wind on the cloth is a great effect.
-
Here's the second skelly - He's a bit more dynamic. I'm trying to keep a vaguely bronze age look going with these, so silly hates and odd textures are a must.
-

Np specific ration, I just take a blob of putty, pop it on a palette, then use a paintbrush to saturate it with lighter fluid. then I agitate it a bit with a small dotting tool and use the resulting slurry to build up dots and lines on the mini. I find lighter fluid works best since it's quite aggressive - although I'd advise caution if you use it to smooth your sculpt since it can turn the putty into an unworkable sludge quite quickly - it'll hold its shape but won't have any resistance to a wayward tool.
-
The new skeleton is pretty awesome again :-*
As soon as they're cast up, I feel another order coming up...
-
I really appreciate these skeletons. Can't wait to see more and then order them.
-
Another great addition!
-
Love the skeleton! I think I might prefer it to the first actually, the pose is really great :-*
-
I like those. I cam see the Mork Borg vibe too, which is very cool, intended or not!
