Aye, looks really good.

Couldn't be better timing with those plastic samurai appearing for sale, almost as if it was planned, probably not though.

I wonder how true to the book it is going to be, or if it's going to be like the recent reimagining of AQOTWF?

It’s been a while since I read it but I don’t remember Maiko being kick-ass.

I do like Hiroyuki very much though. Looking forward to his portrayal of Torunaga  8)

Well, the book and the original series are nothing but artistic license, so there's no need to stop now.

The original series was a flop in Japan because audiences there were already quite used to high quality costume drama series that portrayed their actual history, so Shōgun was just trivial nonsense to them.

I'm really hoping we get a good boost of players taking up Test of Honour dut to this.

Enjoying it

Rewatching the first two eps and one thing is annoying me more and more; the use, in interior scenes, of extreme wide angle lenses, coupled with a very narrow depth of field leading to curvature and edge distortion. I know why they've done it; it makes the sets look much bigger than they are and allows natural light to be used but, christ, it's bugging me.

Watched the first half of episode 1, so far very good.  I missed the apple though, it was a nice touch in the book albeit not critical to any translation to screen.

What's your take on the blue filter? I know this was filmed in Canada, but does everything have to look so drab?

Some are claiming the filter is a tribute to pre-digital film making, but I don't recall the 1980 series looking so dull. Ten to Chi to aka Heaven and Earth was also filmed in Canada and that was a riot of color in comparison.

Just caught up on Eps 3 and 4 after a couple of weeks away. Enjoying it more and more - niggles about the cinematography not withstanding.

What's your take on the blue filter? I know this was filmed in Canada, but does everything have to look so drab?

It doesn't bother me as much as the wide open aperture wide angle shots but I get where you're coming from. It seems that virtually all high end, period, productions are doing it and 'history' is now virtually monochome (Napoleon was the same). I'm tempted to tweak the TVs colour setting to see if I can punch the colour a bit but, tbh, I'm enjoying too much to be really stressed by it.

Yep, more and more so.

Minor, I know, but I really like the titles. CBA'd to check but I'd lay money that they were done by the same team that did the ones for The Peripheral.

Haven't seen The Peripheral but I like them as well. The music works well.

No spoilers really (as most people should hopefully know) but I wonder if they'll have a big battle at the end or just leave it like the book?

I can agree with the ones designed by Dixon himself. The Copplestone ones (mainly Ronin)are though a bit better. Quite nice even with todays standards I think

It was always these scenes when the ninjas attacked in the chamberlain version that drove into Japanese miniatures. Maybe James will do a fitting KS with huge rooms? Then a dream would become true
Title: Re: Shogun remake
Post by: Inkpaduta on April 25, 2024, 02:33:26 AM
I would say I enjoyed it too. However, I also felt somewhat let down. Just about every episode someone would say
"now it is war" or "start the operation" and then... nothing. No fighting, no armies, no battles just a lot of talk.
So, I liked it but the ending, for me, was a let down.

Just binged it today. Loved it.

But what the hell was that old man flashback nonsense in the finale… I don’t understand that, as he doesn’t get home and even suggesting that he did removes any sense of tension (in the absence of anyone guessing it’s whatever it’s supposed to be).

Just started my free month of Hulu today to start watching.  Definitely enjoying this, and better than the original series.  I always thought Richard Chamberlain was fairly boring in the role of Anjin-san.  Cosmo Jarvis fills the role better.

A second season without a book and a dead author? This would be very senseless. The end is perfect and not all showes need second seasons...

Can't really remember the book as I read it so long ago and wasn't wholly keen on the original so I'm happy to disconnect from them. Watching shows like this is generally more about 'world building' for me than anything else but I thought the cast was very well chosen and would like to see more of them (well, the ones that are left  lol ).
Title: Re: Shogun remake

I suspect that a second season will come down to one thing, and one thing only; cold hard cash.

BTW the book is/was available on Kindle for 99p so it's now in the virtual pile to be read.

It wasn’t a flashback, apparently it was him daydreaming about the future.

I got that, but when it first cropped up, I was wondering where the hell they were going, I know he never goes home, so I wondered if they were doing some Hollywood happy ending. I'm sure the nuance of that daydream was lost on many and I'm not really sure what it added to the story, we know he wants to go home, he says it frequently. just an odd addition.

Cosmo Jarvis was superb though.

I would certainly like a season 2 but I seriously doubt it.

It's Blackthorne wanting to go home, imagining what it would be like, and the overwhelming regret he would feel if he did it.

I think it's there to show why he changes his mind and re-engages.  He's looked on the potential future where he didn't support Toranaga, and didn't like it.

It's why he lets Mariko's cross drop into the ocean in the end, he's at peace with his actions whereas in his dream he was not.

The second book in clavels row is350 years later, so it builds a new world. The original end was well fitting to the story, let it untouched by Hollywood pimps and poser. They have a lot of stuff to kill, not this one…

I liked the new series very much, the only "thing" I noticed was that the time that passed from the shipwreck until the "dream/omen" is not well explained or pointed out.
If I remember the book correctly, the story lasts about a couple of years.

In the serie it seems (to me?) that he goes from completely barbarian to a japanese speaking hatamoto in few weeks/a couple of months... all the book is about the preparation to the Sekigahara battle, and that takes a lot of time and intrigues.

Gai Jin would make an interesting film but it could not be Season 2.   I notice from  the credits that the Clavell family were involved in this remake. Maybe the writer left notes. He was quite prolific - screenplays for The Great Escape and 633 Squadron - directing The Last Valley etc etc.
