Title: Barbarus' Brutal Barbarians
Post by: Barbarus on August 19, 2022, 08:26:50 PM
A few years ago I realized the best method to get things done in this hobby is to go with the themes one's passionate about,
not building and painting minis for a specific game.

To those who play historical games that's certainly no new information.
You collect, build and paint minis that represent a faction that you find interesting from a time period you find interesting.

But yeah, it took me many years to get my head around that one.
Or that I could do the same thing people do with the historical games with my sci-fi and fantasy.

So I went looking: what are the things I am really passionate about?

Well, for one anything "barbarian". The barbarian archetype is always my favorite in any kind of setting.

Then there's paleontology, if it's extinct I'm interested.
It all started with the dinosaurs as a kid, but quickly evolved (huh-huh) into an interest specifically in the pleistocene.
You know, when our species and giant creatures inhabited landscapes at the very same time.
Mammoths, giant sloths, cave bears and sabre-toothed cats.
Awesome!

From there I moved forward and developed the idea of a "pleistocene themed army of barbarians", which would
mainly be used for Warhammer (6th edition) and maybe Kings of War, but really any game where those minis would fit.

The army is led by "Barbarus The Beastmaster", also known as "Barbarus The Bloodthirsty", "Barbarus The Banished" and "Barbarus The Brutal".
(some might also call him "Barbarus The Bada$$"  lol )
He's got a whole backstory of "shakespearean" dimensions full of betrayal, bloodshed and revenge.
And I will certainly write it down at some point.

Anyway, he really looks like a certified bada$$, riding on this giant hyena
(which I made from a collectible toy)

Superb conversion! I think there'd be a place for a fellow like that in just about any fantasy game under the sun!

Really nice, I'm also a big fan of the archetype. What is the base model for the rider?

Next post...

... the first regiment I finished for this army.

The unit has no name yet. Gotta think of something cool.

Up to this point they're simply called "Buff Dudes on Sabretooths" :D

He looks awesome! I’m looking forward to seeing it painted.

Your observations about focusing on a theme make sense to me. I make the most progress when I focus on an army, and I lose momentum when I split my attention. I don’t get as many models done in total, compared to when I work within a theme. My problem is that I have multiple gaming interests and companies like Northstar keep throwing new temptations in my way!

Really nice, I'm also a big fan of the archetype. What is the base model for the rider?

The head is from GW's Crom, the torso is from a barbarian by Avatars Of War, arm with axe is from GW's beastmen, the other arm is from GW's mounted marauders, his shield is some old GW shield... anything below his belly button is green stuff ^^

The hyena is a toy by... Papo, I think?

Here is one of my Chaos Spawns, "The Black Chimera":

The idea behind this one was that a maneating lion was transformed by the tribes' stories.
Their imagination shaped reality and the creature they talked about.
First they exaggerated its size.
Then they told stories of its black mane.
In the end they even added horns and a black snake as its tail.

Fantastic painting! Is that 'Black Chimera' based on an old Ral Partha chimera?

I have friends who "fall" for a new game basically every week.
It's no wonder they never finish a project...

If you like gorey horror stuff, just do gorey horror stuff and then find a ruleset for them...

Wise words! If you've got a big pool of painted miniatures, then trying out new games is pure fun rather than a chore.

(Of course, you always need more painted miniatures ...)  ;)

It used to be a chimera by Reaper.

I did not use the two outer heads, I sculpted some fur where they'd go.

Also added the horns. And that was basically it....

Love Barbarus. He looks great. Makes those sabretooth guys look puny I imagine.
Have you checked out Deezee https://arcanesceneryandmodels.co.uk/product-category/deezee-miniatures/deezee-beasts/
Some great mammoths on there. I also used their Elasmotherium for mounting my Barbarian leader (old Grenadier barbarian)

Great work! Love the painting and the theme (I am fond of barbarians and prehistoric settings myself). And I heartily approve of your gaming philosophy; there's a lot to be learned from that!

Unfortunately I can't see Barbarus himself. He appears to have been uploaded to a different image hosting site than the rest of them and it won't load for me! Any chance you could reupload him to tabletopwelt.de?

Okay, how about now?

I hope you can see this.

Anyway, thanks everyone.
Nice that you are as excited about this stuff as I am.
It's just such a cool theme.

So here's a little tutorial to make your own primitive huts (or rather tents):

You make the basic shape out of tinfoil, by just creating a sphere, compressing it more and more and slamming it on a table a few times to create this shape here... and you push into them with your finger from above

Then you cover them with a thin layer of your favorite sculpting material, in my case it was Super Sculpey, which has to be baked to harden, so I baked them... and this is what they looked like after:

And here they are sprayed with brown paint

Next I made the hides to go on top of the structures... I used brown acrylic filler from the hardware store.
I spread it out, let it set on foil, and then ripped it into pieces:

Then I glued the pieces to the huts.
Oh, and as you can see I also made tusks, again from Super Sculpey. They went onto the huts to create entrances and indicate a structure made from bones and tusks on the inside by sticking out on the tops there...

After that all left to do is painting them and add some pieces of a rough fabric to indicate some kind of door, hanging cloth, whatever, and they're done:

Nice idea for an army and I really like your painting.

Thanks, I tried to find a level somewhere between "oldschool" and modern, more "artsy" approaches.

I enjoyed the painting standard back in the day, but one might say the world has moved on...

Here's one of my mounted champions, another toy conversion.

Don't have a name for him yet.
His story is kinda done, though. He's sort of a wild card, in Barbarus' tribe the "Beastmasters", he's one of the fiercest warriors.
Also pretty unpredictable. Khorne has an eye on him.

Another Schleich beast!

I used to collect Schleich and Papo figures for years (and made some rather blunderous attempts to wargame with them in 90mm scale). Repurposing them as 28mm giant mounts is a much better idea.

See? That's something one can avoid with sticking to themes. I have friends who "fall" for a new game basically every week.
It's no wonder they never finish a project...

If you like gorey horror stuff, just do gorey horror stuff and then find a ruleset for them...

Don't let yourself be tempted by the manufacturers :D
All they want is your money ^^

I have a goblin pirate army.  Various manufacturers, some orcs, squids, octopi, etc.  They show up in Frostgrave, few other skirmish games.  End of the day, I love goblin pirates.  I'm going to collect and paint goblin pirates.  I will find a way to shoe horn them into any game system that I decide I like, because ... goblin pirates.

I love the barbarians, by the way.  Are the sabertooths (sabreteeth?) toys also, or from another model?

You should see the other one!
It's even more intimidating. I'll post pics tomorrow.

The parts list is long... way too long. That champ with axe on the chariot is e Warhammer Underworlds, that Khorne team.
The other guy is made from Beastmen part, mounted marauders, parts from GW's Warcry... those skinny sado-maso dudes with masks. (sorry, can't remember the names of the new GW stuff... they're all too dumb and complicated.... )

I guess you recognize most parts for the chariot... mounted marauders horses, orc chariot side walls... bit of wood for the undercarriage... wheels from the Vampire Counts death cart... skulls from the GW skull box... shields from Beastmen and various Chaos sets

Go goblin pirates!
That's the correct approach.

The sabretooths are from Mirliton's Barbarian range. They have sabretooth riders. I took those and some old metal GW marauders and converted them with bits from several kits.

Thank you! I'd like to return the compliment. I have come across your blog a few times and your stuff is great!

I'll continue with my second chaos spawn..."The Goat of Menders", short summary on its background:
during a dark, stormy night, green lightning flashing in the sky, a child was born to a peasant couple in the small village Menders, part of the empire.
The child was disfigured and had a goat's head. Shocked and disgusted the parents brought the newborn out into the woods and left it there to die.
But die it did not, instead it grew, feasting on the villagers' chicken first and cattle later.
And as soon as it was big enough it came for the villagers...
After enacting terrible revenge on its people it found its way into the "Valley of the Beasts" where Barbarus' tribe is located.

In case you were wondering: yes, that indeed is the lower body of an old Dragon Ogre. Though almost completely covered with fur.

Cheers, guys!

That is one of the creepier miniatures I’ve seen (but in a good way)! It totally fits with a chaos collection. Very cool conversion work and painting, too.

That is truly the stuff of nightmares - well done! A great miniature with an excellent paint job. Will fit in nicely with any fairy tale/chaos themed setting.

Very much agree! Painted with such excruciating detail that I wonder which end is the most dangerous.

 lol

Not only did I paint it, first I had to sculpt it!

The inspiration was my cat. While I was working on this mini she walked by, all swagger, tail held high, presenting her butt to the world and I was like "Yeah, this creature has to be realistic, it needs a visible butthole!"
