16th/17th Century Help needed!
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:59:50 PM »
Greetings,

I'm currently looking for a good selection of miniatures that would fit in well during the timeperiod of late 1500's to early 1600's... and I'm getting a bit stumped. Apart from various Pirate miniatures out there, what else could cover this era in miniatures? I know of some Foundry explorers/swashbucklers, but apart from those I am, as stated, a bit stumped.

So... any ideas for 28mm miniatures? Or links for the clothes of the day in those eras so I could have a go at converting perhaps? :D

You should look for ranges our British fellas prefer to call "Elizabethan" or "Border Reivers". It's their share of this period. ;)
Vendel Miniatures (now sold by Sgt Major) have a nice selection - if you can cope with the somewhat bulky and static models. They are similar to Gripping Beast's ranges.
Some of Eureka's Conquistadores might be useful, too.
Other than that and Foundry - the more since Arsenal Miniatures seem to have run aground already :'( - choices are rather limited.

Most of pirate figures are of the late 17th or early 18th century. If you are interested in historical accuracy.  ;)

Its quite a wide period for costume ;

for 1500 you are really looking at Italian Wars figures and conquistadors so companies like the Foundry, Assault Group, OG, Eureka

Once you start to move into the mid century (say 1530s onwards) you are now looking at Foundry/Vendel elizabethan ranges (dont forget Foundry have re-released their old Tudor range orignally when they were Guernsey Foundry done by the Perrys) however these will be very small compared to more modern ranges.

Also worth looking at are the OG wars of religion figures which are quite nice but you havfe to buy in 30 figure packs, the further into the 17th centruy the more able you are to plunder some of the ECW and Thrity years war ranges but be careful to select your figures. Your best bet is to look at what Captain Blood has done in the forum for his Reivers as an ideal example

The Assault Group (as mentioned) are producing figures for the Italian Wars, they appear to be Early 16th Century... look under 'Spanish' on their site, many of the others are much too late. You could use a fair amount of the Perry's War of the Roses figures too for more or less any North European Country at this time. The slashed 'Lansknecht' look (or Swiss if you prefer) didn't really take off until the 1600s and then it took a while to catch on in the Northern lands. The really baggy 'pluderhosen' are for post 1520-ish, prior to that tight hose was the norm, with or without a garment resembling Victorian womens 'bloomers'.

George Gush's 'Renaissance Armies' is still the definitive book on the period imo, and can be found here;

The Swiss

The Italians

The Spanish

The French

If you want the other chapters, click on 'features' on the site's tool bar.

 :)

Landsknechte and the like aren't really suitable for this purpose me thinks. ;)

Have a look at the Border Reiver range by Outpost Miniatures - I believe they are set for the last couple of decades of the 16thC.

I've had a few miniatures from the company (from the Highwaymen Range) and they seemed good folks to deal with.
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2024 = 38
(2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

Yes... my error, but I'm sure it said 15th/16th Century to start with.  :?

However the links will still be helpful and the other TAG figures are ideal.  :D

Fashion in the 1500s to 1600s depends on location and date.

George Gush is the easiest starting point, decide what you're looking for and then look for suitable figures.

Most Renaissance ranges should have something to offer. Redoubt have quite a large range (although most isn't illustrated) of Renaissance figures, and for the 1640s they also have a 3 musketerrs range and an ECW range.

Late 1500s? Try the Eureka Portuguese. There's also an Italian chap doing Spanish for the period, can't recall the name. Foundry's old Elizabethan range is aimed at 1580-1600 and would be the best option if you want something for Europe or colder climes.

That might be the mentioned company Arsenal Miniatures. Sadly, neither updates on their site nor email replies from the producer. Originally sheduled for February/March this year, that's a crash before lift off, I'm afraid. :'(

A pity, they looked liked nice sculpts. Bloody silly packaging though, 4 different pike poses per pack, it would have meant buying an enormous quantity just to build a unit and the thing about pike blocks is that you want the pose to be reasonably consistent, even if the figures are varied in terms of costume, expression etc.

I have a parcel arriving from Eureka next week which is said to have some new Italian wars figures of some description in it. Will post pics when they arrive. Maybe something in there could be of generic use
