Any Camera experts?
«
on:
November 17, 2019, 09:41:57 PM »
Been struggling for a while to take decent photos. Thought it was my lights, but now I think it's the camera.
Top left hand of the images, a halo effect. As in several small circles one on top of the other.
Anyone know if this is "fixable" or should I just get another camera?

Hello Orctrader, does your camera have a lens hood, what sort of camera, is the lens clean, and do you always shoot in the same spot?

In addition to Blackwolf's questions, can you post a pic where the effect is evident? I didn't see anything amiss in any of your photos lately.

Good point Dr.
I've been thinking
It could be just a little light bouncing around,if it happens prior to you adjusting the photo on your PC/Mac,I suggest it's something simple, too many f stops trying to get everything in focus is just one cause, and so on. A filter may help depending on what camera you have.

It could be a lot of things. Dust inside an SLR, a smear on the lens (guessing you already looked for that), a reflection coming from somewhere (maybe bouncing off the lens hood) are all likely culprits.

Thanks guys.
Cleaned the lens with lint-free cloth.
Not seen on my photos because I have managed to crop that part out.
At the weekend, tried it with various lights - as I had assumed that was the cause - this was when I realised the effect is there no matter what.
It's a Fuji Finepix S1500.
The picture below shows the issue. (I'm no expert but I've been finding it increasingly difficult to get decent shots. All down to me; now I wonder if the camera is actually part of the problem.)

I use a Finepix S4500 and I can't say I've ever noticed anything like that on my shots. Mind you, I tend set it to SR-AUTO, use a tripod and take the shots on the 2sec timer, which may be lazy, but it gets good results every time.
If you're taking the photos in the same location, it might be that (for example) light is coming in through a window at a funny angle to the lens. Odd though it sounds, I'd try shutting the curtains and putting the light on, then taking the shot on a 10sec timer to see if it's still there. The camera is great at adjusting to different light.

Hmmm, looks like something on the lens, this may sound silly; if you've got a jewellers loupe,or even a magnifying glass have a look at the lens, you may have to try various angles to make sure.
Let us know how you get on.

It looks almost crystalline... so could be something on either the front or back glass of the lens, or on the sensor. Don't try cleaning the sensor yourself! It could also be something inside the lens...

Right, I've shown it to the missus, who was a photo developer in a past life. She says it's almost certainly a tiny fibre on the lens, inside or outside. If you take it into a camera shop, they might be able to open the lens and blast it clean with a can of pressurised air.

Thanks everyone.
At the weekend I'll take a good look at the lens with my Optivisor, and see if it's on the outside. If it's inside I'll see what local camera store has as charges.

I only found time to check the camera over today.
Through magnification - my Optivisor - I couldn't see anything on the lens - I'm always meticulous about keeping the lens cap on between photo sessions, so would be surprised if anything was on it. However, it must have been!
With a dry, lint-free cloth I carefully polished the lens and proceeded to photograph my entry for round 10 of the LPL and...no problem. Whatever was on the lens and causing the weird effect is now gone.
Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to offer suggestions and help.
