Hello guys,
This is a project I had since I started painting late XVII century armies, I wanted a fast raised tercio or militia regiment. These soldiers represent the rural or town militia of the dangerous border with France in Catalonia or even Flanders.
As Spaniards, they carry a flag with the Holy Virgin Mary, and a Red background. Of course is conjectural but quite realistic in my opinion. I tried to use mostly browns, beiges or greys, with a couple of uniformed men here and there, like the officer.
The minis used are a mix of ECW Warlord games militiamen, Warfare Miniatures' League of Augsburg, Dixon's Grand Alliance... I think they combine well.
They are militia so although, oriented to 1665-1690's, I used some earlier period figures, in order to represent the old fashioned clothes of the rural folk, and some morions to give the appearance of old Spanish troops or siege troops, who usually still carried armour.
I want to combine this unit with my Miquelets in order to field a Militia "battalia"... I plan to add a new regiment made of the oncoming miniatures from Warfare Miniatures.

Love that unit. Thanks for sharing.
-
Nice looking unit, the various manufacturers minis work well together :)
-
I like very much your browns, beiges or greys, the unit might come out dark and obscure, but with your neat highlights the colors pop!
And a flag very well done!
Cheers!
-
They are lovely :-*
-
A great unit. I really like the palette you've used - subdued colours with the occasional bit of bright red or blue.
-
Fantastic painting. I love the bases!
-
Wow! Truly exceptional work!
Terry
-
Many thanks for your kind comments mates
-
Very nicely done :-*
-
Beautifully presented figures, I,d be using these for The Pikemans Lament rules , well done .
-
Really nice unit. I’m jealous.
-
Cracking stuff
-
Thanks ! they are intended for Pike & Shotte, Beneath the Lilly Banners... I have not tried Pikemans Lament (yet) but I would like to, as well as "Encamisada" a skirmish game very easy to learn by the Liber militum Tercios Team
-
They are terrific, Chema! I have been tempted by BLB for ages, but the sheer amount of miniatures needed to play a game always has put me off.
-
Wow I love everything about this unit Chema, the painting, composition, basing and standard are all top notch :-*
-
Thank you very much ! :) I will expand this project soon
-
Really nice. They have the look of Irish regiments that might have fought for King James II.
-
Gorgeous painting on those minis. :-* :-* :-*

BLB works fine for smaller games, I started out with only half a dozen units a side. As the casualties are recorded on a roster you can even start playing with smaller units than the standard 3 element infantry formations, just to get some games under your belt.

Hello all!
I have just finished a new unit for my Spanish army, a squadron of horse of Cuirassiers, I have used the flag of (presumably) "Tercio of Mastaing", a Spanish/Walloon Cuirassier regiment of the Army of Flanders, Of course this unit is equally suitable for the Portuguese-Spanish war (the latter part of the conflict), War of Devolution, Franco-Dutch War etc. I guess this soldiers could stretch roughly from 1660-85.
Please note that these Cuirassiers are NOT from any manufacturer, and its quality is average...(although the leader is a converted NorthStar 1672 line cavalry trooper), they were sculpted by an amateur sculptor and casted just a few models for this little project. The horses are NorthStar 1672. I wanted to match the style of Northstar because I love that range and a big part of my collecion is Northstar's.
The uniform is buffcoat or yellowish coat, with red cuffs over the elbow, a Spanish morion and breast and back plate.
Their uniform also match the one used by Don Juan Jose of Austria Cuirassiers guards, in the ill fated invasion of Portugal in 1662-63.

Hello there!
just updated my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/03/28mm-tercio-de-burgos-amarillos-viejos.html
This month I have finished (finally) the last of the five provincial tercios based in the Iberian peninsula, for my late XVII c. Spanish army. Tercio de Burgos, known as the Old Yellows or "Amarillos Viejos".
We know the flags and the yellow uniform, BUT some sources say the cuffs and leggins were blue and others say they were red... I preferred painting them in red, but the blue option seems to have more historical weight.
Anyway, this Tercio was formed on 22 January 1657, and Don Geronimo de Benavente y Quiñones was appointed as Maestre de Campo of what would become the Amarillos Viejos. It first actions were in the war against Portugal until 1668 when it gained its independence.
In 1664 it became Tercio Provincial de Burgos, a veteran unit which fought against the French in the Franco Dutch War 1672-78 and in the League of Augsburg War 1689-97, fighting in every major battle in those conflicts in the Catalan front of the war, like battle of river Ter in 1694 and Barcelona in 1697 just to name a couple.
The miniatures are mostly Northstar 1672/ Phoenix Miniatures Spaniards, with some additions like the officer and a couple of pikemen which were sculpted for me by a freelance. There is also a Northstar 1672 Swiss musketeer, converted into Spanish with a plume and front lappels added, just to add some variety.
The flag is by Adolfo Ramos Flags, and the painting was with Vallejo and Foundry paints. As yellow is a tricky colour to paint over black (and over every colour!) I airbrushed a desert yellow or ochre colour to the whole unit to serve as a second primer or base colour, then washed over and painted in the Foundry style "triads" but with 4 and 5 highlights in most cases, trying to blend the different colours in thin layers, using the excellent GW "Lahmian medium" instead of water.
Enough talking, here are the minis:

Chiming in a bit late but I like these yellow muchachos a lot 8)
We know the flags and the yellow uniform, BUT some sources say the cuffs and leggins were blue and others say they were red... I preferred painting them in red, but the blue option seems to have more historical weight.
As you know, Clonard also shows white as yet another facing colour for the Amarillos viejos. These multiple possibilities may not be mutually exclusive though : while the coat obviously remained yellow throughout the period, the facing colour may well have changed from decade to decade, blue being the last one chronologically before the 1707 uniforms were introduced. This is just pure conjecture on my part and I have no period evidence to back this theory, but isn't it conceivable that the facings were red in the 1660's and 1670's before switching to white in the 1680's and finally blue in the 1690's and 1700's ?
And while I'm at it, which size did you select for the Adolfo Ramos flag ? I need to order some from him and I can't decide which size suits 28mm figures best. 25mm might prove a little small so I was tempted to go for 30mm.

Hi !
Yes, I agree, but I've read ( Don't remember where ) that Clonard assumed the facings where white but they were not... I mean, in his sources when a colour was not known or not 100% sure, it says "blank" or empty space, and Clonard just thought it was white... But is unlikely the facings were white.
Blue seems a more historically accurate colour, but I painted them red for 2 reasons: First, We know red was used in this unit at some point, and I simply liked it more lol and second, I want to use the miniatures for another unit (Guardia Chamberga), just changing the base with the flag with another base of 4 miniatures with a different flag.
And I chose Adolfo Ramos flag in 40mm (I like big flags). I have a spare one in 25mm, If you want it just tell me.
Cheers!

I usually play with Six to nine units per side, no problem.

Hi guys, a new update for my Late XVII century project, conversions and painting a Provincial Tercio of 1670'-90'
I have used mainly Front Rank miniatures, with a Blood & Plunder officer and a Bicorne Miniatures ECW pikeman.
Here is the first base of the unit, the command base: Blood & Plunder officer, Front Rank converted ensign and Front Rank converted drummer.
I love the Spanish officer in high cuffs and open coat! Is my first painted Blood & Plunder miniature.
the drummer is Front Rank Monmouth command; I cut his woollen hat, and gave him another one, in plastic. I added a moustache and a feather (greenstuff).
the ensign is a Front Rank Monmouth Scytheman converted.

Now the pikemen base:
More scythemen were easily converted into pikemen using Warlord Games ECW' plastic pikes, and Wargames Factory sword. These pikemen are for my Provincial Tercio without proper uniform.
There is also a Bicorne Miniatures ECW pikeman, I really like this pack of Bicorne Pikemen, I will use them both for my (late) 30 years war and 1650, and for my War of Devolution or old fashioned uniform in later times. I "sculpted" a feather and a cravatte or necklace to give some 1660-70 flavour.

Hi guys,
Hi guys, I have just updated my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2020/02/finished-another-late-tercio.html
Some months ago I started to paint a unit for my Spanish army, suitable either for 1670 or League of Augsburg War, using mainly Front Rank miniatures, you can see the previous post here:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/04/front-rank-conversions-in-28mm-for-1670.html
So finally I managed to finish it, a Provincial Tercio, made up of recruits, and ready to fight in Catalonia against the French. Also could they could be used in Flanders, as the uniform was (mostly) off white and red in several Tercios of the Army of Flanders.
In order to give some colour variation, I used 3 different recipes to paint the off white; Artic Grey (Foundry), Rakarth Flesh (Citadel), Stormvermin Fur (Citadel).
I really like the way it looks, with those Front Rank miniatures of their "Monmouth rebels" range intermixed with the more professional look of the regular infantry of their late 17c range.
So here you have the pics of the finished unit:

Many thanks, I use mostly Vallejo and Foundry with some Citadel occasionally ( I stopped buying them because they dry in the pot earlier than any other brand I have ever used) in the blog entry you can see the exact colours I used for the different shades of white/grey

Hello mates,
I have just finished another cavalry unit for my Spanish army of Late XVIIC. this time is a Lorrainer cavalry squadron of Prince of Vaudemont regiment. This unit fought with the Spanish Army of Flanders at least between 1672 and 1698, in all major engagements and skirmishes.
more info of unit, colours and flag here in my blog:

*Preciosos, Chema. Este es un período que me encantaría jugar y pintar. He empezado con unos hugonotes, pero la ausencia de adversarios me ha frenado :'(. Me encantan tus modelos, en serio. Y el proyecto me parece cojonudo.

Hello guys I have just update my blog with a new commander for my army:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
After some months of model making and WW2 painting, I have just finished a Spanish officer in the Spanish Netherlands in 1670' It will be one of the commanders of my brigades/battalias in the gaming table.
The miniature is a civilian gentleman by North Star 1672, slightly converted. I added a spontoon blade to the tip of the model's stick, and also a sword under his coat.
The base is resin with a wrapped flag and a helmet laying in the ground, and some static grass and tufts.

Hello guys,
new post in my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
I was in the mood of painting more officers of Grand Alliance era, so here you have my new command base for my Allied (Dutch, English, Spanish, Bavarian, Imperial...) army in the wars of Louis XIV...
The miniatures are from Casting Room Miniatures, I think they are part of Wargames Foundry, but they are clearly miniatures of lesser quality than Foundry's original ranges; the miniatures are crudely sculpted (imho), short and beefy, but... I wanted this set because of the nice poses and the table with maps.
This miniature set is labelled as Marlburian/WSS or War of Spanish Succession, so they are intended for a later period than I paint and play, BUT with some changes and conversions here and there, you can make some decent late XVII miniatures with them. I substituted their tricorns with floppy hats or broad brimmed hats, and added some shoulder ribbons to one of the officers in order to give him more flavour of the period.
The base is mdf with painted beach sand, static grass, tufts and flowers, and the miniatures painted in the usual way with successive layer triads (well not 3 but 4-5) with Vallejo and Foundry paints.

Hello mates,
new article in my blog
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
I managed to finish a small gaming piece, Dutch artillery for either Franco Dutch War or League of Augsburg War (more appropiate for the latter). The gun crew is Warfare Miniatures and the gun itself is Ebor Miniatures.
Dutch artillery uniform, like most nationalities showed a mixture of civilian clothes and uniforms (especially from 1680' onwards). The uniform of Dutch artillery, seemed to be blue, all blue but the cuffs in "Swedish style" in red, with black hat and shoes. I painted my crew 2 in civilian clothes and 2 uniformed, but with normal cuffs and more orange than red (yes, I moved from the strictly historical uniform).
The wooden parts of the gun are painted in brick red, I read that gun carriage was in that colour, but other sources state that was in grey... I decided to paint in brick red. The debate on the wooden colour does not seem very important to me, since at that time it was common to use any artillery within reach, including many pieces captured from the enemy or bought from third parties.

Hello friends,
I have updated my blog with a new entry:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
this time I bring you a small unit that I have made with great enthusiasm, using half a dozen miniature manufacturers.
It intends to be an assault group of the Tercios of Flanders, during Franco-Dutch War. Specifically it belongs to the Tercio de Zuñiga, also called Tercio del Duque de Béjar or Departmental Tercio of Brabant. It was made up of native Spaniards, and was stationed in the Netherlands until the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, so it saw a lot of combat in the period 1672-1710 aprox.
the uniform was light gray or off white with blue facings, and we know that some of his flags had the emblem of the Duke of Béjar, although I have not included it in this small detachment.
Manuel Diego López de Zúñiga Sotomayor, Duke of Bejar, "Maestro de Campo" of his Tercio in the army of Flanders from 1681, he took part in the siege of Oudenaarde, where with his own hands he removed some burning bombs that had fallen into a powder magazine, thus demonstrating his great courage. The ensign of his Tercio carried the flag with the Duke of Béjar's coat of arms. He died fighting the Ottomans during the siege of Buda.
Regarding the miniatures, I wanted to represent a typical image of the sieges, both in the offensive and in defense. a Group of selected soldiers called Forlorn Hope by the English or Enfants Perdus by the French. I can use them as a musketeer wing. These "stormtroopers" made sorties out of the fortresses to sabotage enemy artillery, capture soldiers and officers, or kill engineers.
I have armed them with muskets, grenades, pistols and halberd of various brands, I should have used flintloques too, but I had none :(
Most of the miniatures depicted are from the defunct "Phoenix Miniatures" range, which were somewhat inferior in quality than the North Star 1672 range. From this brand there is a pikeman, converted into an ensign with a plastic pistol and a plastic Warlord Games wrapped flag, and 3 identical musketeers, but as I wanted a unique look, I leaved one musketeer as it was, but the other two, lost their heads and had Warhammer heads instead.

there are also 2 Warlord Games miniatures: a plastic musketeer and a metal kneeling Swede:
-The plastic one was a musketeer from the English Civil War infantry box, with lots of conversions... I turned himo into a grenadier using two plastic arms from former Wargames Factory WSS infantry, and I lengthened his coat by "sculpting" (I am a terrible sculptor) more fabric of the uniform right up his knees with green putty.

-As for the metal Swede, I cut his Dutch pot helmet and substituted it with a broad brimmed hat of the decapitated head of a Phoenix Miniatures musketeer.
Finally, the last miniature is the sergeant, an unrecognizable Monmouth Rebel by Front Rank miniatures... I cut off both arms and replaced them with two plastic arms from Warhammer imperial militia, one arm with a halberd and another one holding a pistol, I also scuplted some feathers on the hat and added Front Rank's metal shoulder ribbons too.
Also, in order to add more flavor to the unit, I wanted some scenery scattered on the bases: a cannon from Wargames Factory WSS, two 3D printed gabions, and a cut "Chevaux de Frisie" from Warfare Miniatures.
I hope you like the final result, It took me longer than expected to finish this unit because I am in the process of moving to a new house, so this has been the last unit painted in my old home.

Hello guys,
I have just upated my blog with a new mini project:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
I am still in a XVII c mood, so I decided to bring back an old concept from my Warhammer Historical times, the "Army Standard Bearer", in my case, a Spanish "alférez" (ensign).
In recent times I saw a picture of a painting by Justus Van Egmont, a very talented Flemish painter, who painted a Spanish ensign, probably from a Tercio or a Civic Militia in Flanders. I really loved the painting I thought about making it in 28mm !
The miniature is based in a "large" scenic base, because I will use him as an officer or Standard Bearer for large battle games or skirmish warbands games. Of course the mini is not an exact copy of the painting, but I tried to make it as similar as possible.
The miniature is made up from Wargames Foundry's Louis XIV miniature, heavily converted , with another head, a Warhammer Bretonnian head from young knights sprue, with green stuff puty sculpted over, to make a decent hair. Both hands were cut, one of them is an open hand from Warlord Games' ECW range, and the other is holding a plastic broad brimmed hat also from Warlord Games. The flag itself is printed at home, downloaded from 80YW.org a fb group by Bouko de Groot, an absolutely wonderful site, full of nice flags from the 80 Years War. Although the flag of the painting is not the same of the miniature, is similar enough for me.
The "uniform" or dress is more suitable for the War of Devolution than Franco Dutch War, but I will use for both :)
I hope you like the finished result, I am quite pleased about the way it turned out, despite it was painted in a couple of days.

Hello guys,
new post here:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
I am still painting small scenic bases for my late XVII c. macro project, now is the turn of some French.
As this period is full of sieges, from large cities to small villages, I needed siege personel in my armies, so I got my inspiration from a blog I follow and visit regularly: Sidney Roundwood's excellent blog
this is the link of the exact post I "copied"
http://sidneyroundwood.blogspot.com/2019/04/the-council-of-warre-year-of-french.html
I wanted to reproduce a similar scene, where a French officer, maybe Monsieur Vauban, and a siege engineer, were supervising and conducting siege operations in common places like Flanders, Catalonia or The Netherlands in 1670' or so.
The miniatures themselves are a mix of Dixon's miniatures and Wargames Foundry:
- the officer/Vauban is a conversion of a Dixon's Grand Alliance siege engineer with a new head, the head of Louis XIV from Wargames Foundry and green stuff for the hair! I think the result is nice and the two parts from the different manufacturers come together well. I have painted him with a similar uniform to this Vauban painting.
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSrncMPJGf4/X9c68l-PSOI/AAAAAAAADyc/a6ROczYx_joTH9yO2j_B2rP-O4YySRF_ACLcBGAsYHQ/s651/sebastien-vauban-2.jpg
-the siege engineer in armour is Wargames Foundry's, from ECW/ 30 Years War range, very nice miniature, I fell in love with the miniature when saw it and placed and order ! So I left him unmolested, with no conversions haha. Maybe his outfit is a little "demodé" or slightly early from 1670', but I think in siege operation it was common to wear siege armour.
The little maps were downloaded from the abovementioned Sidney Roundwood's blog.
I used a mix of Vallejo and Foundry paints, with occasional Citadel Washes, I hope you like the finished result!

Hello friends, and Happy New Year 2021
I have just updated my blog with this mini project:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/
I hope you have had a good beginning of the year,
during the Christmas holidays I have painted an army scenic base or objective-base; a black powder cart.
I want to paint some generic miniatures for the logistic part of my XVII c. armies, in this particular case, Spanish Tercios. I have started with this strongbox/cart, for black powder transport and storage.
I remember I bought this little model from North Star 1672 range a couple of years ago, in mdf ,and it is very easy to build and paint.
The miniatures are a converted Wargames Foundry ECW siege engineer, a little dog (Tercios Miniatures) and a Spanish sentry with a firelock from Phoenix Miniatures. I needed a guy with a firelock musket, because Matchlocks muskets near black powder storage have the tendency to detonate the whole rearguard of your army, so better to be cautious with this!
In order to paint the cart I first used a dark brown paint, with a brush, and then I tried a new technique with "Ammo Mig" chipping fluid, applied with the airbrush, after a few minutes I used the airbrush again to paint the gray color over the previous layers, and that's where the magic starts...
I rubbed the grey paint with a brush moistened in water, and thanks to the chipping fluid product, the gray paint was wearing away in a realistic way, revealing the brown layer below.
Then I applied varnish, an oil wash to get it dirty, and a light dry brush of light gray on the edges.
Finally a drybrush coat of earthy colors and some dried mud in the lower parts.
As final details, I put a small black flag with the Burgundy cross in red, since they are typical colors of Spanish artillery, and we know that the black flag with the red cross was used by Spanish and Imperial troops during XVII c.. and on top of the cart, I put a small chain.
Regarding the miniatures, as I already mentioned, they are the well-known Foundry siege engineer, who I decapitated and replaced his head with a versatile Warhammer Empire militia head.
The guard is a Spanish musketeer of the now extinct Phoenix Miniatures, with a musket of the same brand. The uniform is in a typical color of Flanders Tercios during the 1670s; light gray and red facings.
I hope you like this little project.

Hello friends,
for this year 2021 I have started a very ambitious project, a 28mm campaign, using actual period characters as leaders for my armies, perhaps introducing role-playing elements in skirmish-type games (like Donnybrook, Pikeman's lament or Encamisada) and also other games in traditional wargame field battles with rule sets such as Beneath the Lily Baners or Pike & Shotte.
BLOG ENTRY:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/01/new-campaign-project-siege-of-gerona.html
The campaign/battle I have chosen is the siege of Gerona in 1684, a Spanish defensive success against a numerically superior French army, in the context of the War of the Reunions 1683-84.
I have a lot of painted miniatures for this period, but I will paint several units and miniatures specifically for this project, as I will show you in future blog entries.
I have chosen this period because it was a brief conflict but with interesting battles, in the years between Franco Dutch War and League of Augsburg War. And I have chosen this campaign because, fortunately, a lot of stories from the protagonists who fought in that battle have reached our days intact. And reading those documents, inmediatelly caught my attention. I have been following Mr. Sidney Roundwood blog with his project "Laarden 1688" a semi historical account of the battles fought in Flanders in the early League of Augsburg War. His blog is a real gem, I strongly recommend it! So I thought about doing a similar one :)
I will keep using miniatures from Northstar 1672, Front Rank, Warfare Miniatures, Wargames Foundry, Dixons Miniatures and Warlord Games, with all those, I hope to get the most complete combination of 28mm minis for a 1684 battle.
I will update the list of "Dramatis Personae" for the different actions, the generals, the captains, but also the commoners... the unknown heroes and leaders of both armies.
Now some context. This short but bloody war, saw Louis XIV, despite peace established by the 1678 Treaty of Nijmegen, seizing the Imperial city of Strasbourg in 1681 and in 1682 occupied the Principality of Orange, then a possession of William of Orange... but formal war began in 1683, When France attacked Spain in Luxembourg and Catalonia, appart from a "terror" bombing of the Republic of Genoa, a traditional ally of Spain.
The French succeded in Luxembourg, defended by 4000 troops (Spanish, Flemish, German...) who managed to inflict 8000 casualities to the French army, which numbered 20.000 men, lead by Marshall François de Créquy and the military genius, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the best siege expert of its time...
But our campaign is set in the south, in a beautiful place just south of the Pyrenees, in the Spanish city of Gerona (Girona in Catalan), where the French were less succesful than in Luxembourg.

Viceroy of Catalonia, Alejandro Bournonville
After a few years in which tension with France was common, and in which Alejandro Bournonville, viceroy of Catalonia, was especially concerned about the defenselessness of the Principality of Catalonia, the official start of the war in November 1683 meant that the viceroy had to face the most difficult moments of his long political and military trajectory. The situation of the French preparations contrasted with that of the Spanish army of Catalonia. The viceroy claimed to have no money, grain, or carriages for field artillery and could not oppose such a powerful enemy in a field battle.
On May the 1st, the French army crossed the border through La Junquera pass. Viceroy Bournonville galantly marched with his troops towards Hostalric ,in order to face some 10,500 French infantrymen and 4,500 horsemen; presumably these were heading towards Gerona, where the French would expect their navy to make an incursion to divert the Viceroy's troops to the coast and force the Spaniards to properly garrison Barcelona.
The next day, 2nd of May, Domingo Pignatelli (or Piñateli), general of the artillery of the Spanish army, arrived to Gerona. He gathered all the forces and took charge of the defense of the city.
Bournonville's dilemma was to stop the enemy in Gerona, bringing part of his troops into that city, or to return to Barcelona and defend it against a potential direct attack. The events showed that, despite the arrival of 1,500 men from the" Tercio of Granada city" and "Tercio of the Coast of Granada" , the numerical inferiority of the Hispanic hosts made it impossible to stop the rival in the open field.
Bournonville, upon learning that French commander in chief, Marshall Bellefonds had set up his camp in Báscara, 5 km from Gerona, ordered the removal of two Tercios and two cavalry squadrons from the mountain garrisons to take them to Gerona.
On May 12th, the viceroy of Catalonia arrived in the city offering to support them with part of the Spanish army, and, in effect, with the darkness of night, he left for Hostalrich to meet the French and try to blockade them and cause damage to their numerically superior army before they reach the walls of Gerona.
When the French army moved, Viceroy Bournonville tried to stop them by fortifying a pass of the river Ter in Pont-Major, raising an artillery postion and some trenches , placing a battery, while the cavalry was in charge of closing the nearby mountain passes. Bournonville had 3,000 infantry and 2,000 horsemen to stop their enemy (roughly 15.000 or 16.000 men), holding the position during several attempts to cross the river by the French. The Spaniards sent musketeer mangas (wings) and dismounted dragoons that shot with sharpshooter precission... 1000 French cavalrymen, with some infantrymen also mounted, tried to cross the bridge, and many tried swimming ! but they could not, so they French went to a different position in order to outflank the fortified Spanish troops.
Finally the French only succeeded at crossing the river at night, but without preventing the orderly withdrawal of the Spanish troops to Gerona, including all the guns, thanks to a valiant defense by troops of the Tercio de Barcelona, whose Sargento Mayor, Montaner, with selected musketeers, protected the artillery trayne back to Gerona, without losing a single cannon, leaving Pont Major pass to the French.
So Bellefonds finally seized Pont-Major at night at the cost of some 1,000 casualties against 150 Spanish, and he fortified it, and formally initiating the siege of Gerona by placing detachments at all the passes.
With the arrival of artillery and reinforcements, Bellefonds' forces numbered between 16,000 and 17,000 troops.
So Bournonville faced with the imminence of the assault on Gerona, asked Barcelona for a reinforcement of a Tercio of relief. The city responded by raising a new Tercio of 600 men, plus a company of 60 to cover the losses of the Tercio de Barcelona. The new group left Barcelona on May 25th , 6 days after Bournonville's request. Barcelona agreed to pay for Gerona's defense to try to prevent herself from reaching the same situation.
The Viceroy left a garrison in Gerona of a little more than 3,400 men, not counting the citizens and peasants of Gerona, who defended their city and others who had come from Ampurdán. For their part, according to a report dated May 22, the French had a total of 13,920 men, including infantry and cavalry, which, with the migueletes and the Somatén from Roussillon, reached more than 16,000 troops.
So in Gerona, there were at least:
-Tercio de sevilla "Old Purples"- D. Tomas Arias Pacheco
-Two German Regiments: Christian Baron Bek and other.
-Tercio of Gerona (town militia) colonel Dr. Juan Vilar
-Tercio de Barcelona
-Tercio de la Diputación
-Tercio de Granda -Antonio Serrano
-Tercio de la costa de granada
-Tercio de Toledo "old blues"- D. Manrique de Noroña
-300 dragones led by Sargento general de batalla D. Jose de Agulló
-Cavalry mounted and dismounted of several Trozos (regiments)
-various militia( of priests ! of the different guilds, students...)
On May 20th, the French began their siege and artillery settlement works. In the early morning of the 22nd the wall canvas began to be beaten between the half moons of "Santa Clara" and the "half moon of the Governor", continuing the bombardment until the 24th, firing between 1,500 and 2,000 gunshots of 20 to 36 pounds of field balls. It was considered a miracle of Saint Narcissus that only one soldier and one citizen died during the 3 days bombardment!
Just before the bombardment, some mangas of Spanish musketeers and 40 cavalry men, made a sortie and killed some siege workers and guards, but the French cavalry charged the "storm group" from the city, with little success, because they managed to come back to the city despite some casualities.
after the bombardment, two breaches were made, one 20 feet (6 m) wide and an even larger one easily climbed by fallen rubble. To prevent the assault, the besieged raised a fortified barricade from the Santa Clara bastion to the Governor's crescent, pulling people from both crescents to place them in defense of the barricades. This was protected by the 2,000 best musketeers in the garrison.
In the 2 breaches of the walls, the aformentioned barricades were built, with fascines and gabions, and the Spanish put 8 guns aiming to the wide breaches, the Germans of Von Bek, did a great job in those works. The Bishop of Gerona sent the troops good food and wine, because they did a good job during the bombardment days, building defensive works.
At dusk of May 24th, a French drummer appeared on behalf of Marshal Bellefonds demanding the surrender of the city. otherwise there would be no mercy except for women and children sheltered in churches...Faced with the lack of response, another French drummer arrived, both finally marching with a refusal to such a request.
The Spaniards prepared for an assault, the different Tercios were intermixed in the walls and the barricades (where the walls were breached), in the main barricade, fortified with gabions and fascines there were the main protagonists; General of Artillery Domingo Pignatelli, and the Governor of the city, D. Carlos de Sucre, along Baron Christian Von Bek, and some of the maestros de campo (colonels) of the main Spanish tercios inside the city (Tercio de Sevilla, Tercio de Barcelona, Tercio de Toledo...).
There were other fortified places where the enemy were expected to attack, but it is not possible to describe all of them, but there were even a company of armed priests with the Tercios.
Within an hour of the Spanish refusal of surrender, the French advance took place with 9 regiments with 5,000 or 6,000 men attacking the breaches!
In the successive onslaughts, the Governor's and Santa Clara's crescent moons/bastions fell; the first taken by a Swiss regiment, saw its defenders massacred; the second bastion, conquered by a French German regiment, had better luck in giving these men mercy and taking them prisoner.
the Swiss at Governor's bastion tried to entrench themselves ther with fascines and dead bodies, but the Spaniards threw them grenades, powder charges, musket fire and other fire weapons with shrapnel shots, and finally the Swiss gave up their recently conquered position.
They were repelled from the wall several times with musket shots and gunpowder charges, but they took cover with bodies and demolished materials and resisted. The main breach held up to four enemy advances, entering once up to 200 men, although they were repulsed. After that, some Spanish detachments attacked the crescents firing from the wall and managed to dislodge the enemy.
The Germans in French service who took Santa Clara's bastion, were inmediately counterattacked by a student company from the walls, and regular troops, using a bronze cannon with musket balls, inflicting the Germans great damage. That bastion was near a fountain with a statue of Saint Narcissus, the protector of Gerona, so the Spanish, according to contemporary documents, started to shout "fight the heretics!, Viva España, Viva San Narciso! Victoriaaaa!" and charged the confused Germans, who finally lost their position and run away without their weapons.
In the meantime, as these flank bastions fell and were recovered, the main assault took place in the central fortified barricade, where the main leaders were.
The French assault was at follows; hundreds of "Enfants Perdús" or Forlorn hopes were formed, armed the first line or row with helmets, cuirasses, pikes and half pikes, also roundshiers or swordsmen with round shields! second and third lines there were the grenadiers with granadoes and axes, and after those "storm troops" 5000 men.
French attacks were brave, they reached the barricade, but the fire was so intense that non of the broke through the defenses, cannons with musket balls, arquebuss and musket fire and also grenades and hand to hand combat followed... the killing was terrible. The French tried 3 times, in some points even 5 times, but all of them failed.
The French lost their most veteran troops. Nine French flags were taken from them, including the flag of regiment Furstemberg, called the invincible in those times, and they had 3,000 casualties. On the Spanish side, the casualties were estimated at 100 dead and about 500 wounded.
Possibly the French marshal had lost since the beginning of the campaign about a third of his men, about 5,000. Many Germans from the French army deserted and Bellefonds had to confine all his people in Santa Eugenia to avoid escapes between May 26 and 30, hanging two German captains as an example to the others.
Bellefonds needed several days to bury their dead and take all their wounded to Figueras and Bàscara, where they had their hospitals, while the Spanish peasants and the troops dedicated themselves to the dispossession of the corpses. The marshal even commented that “if the King of Spain had this type of vassals in Flanders, so many towns would not be lost…”.
Gerona as it looked in 1684... but today ;)

Despite this French defeat at the gates of Gerona, the situation of the campaign did not improve ostensibly for the Spanish, since Bellefonds remained in the Ampurdán with 11,000 men and the possibility of an attack by the French navy on Barcelona caused panic in the city. On the other hand, after a short siege, Cadaqués surrendered on June 26. The councilors of Barcelona, wrote worriedly to the Court asking for more money and men to prevent the fall of Rosas and Camprodon, places without which the whole of northern Catalonia would be irreversibly lost. Tensions between Catalan authorities and the Viceroy soon began, as the former accused the latter of inaction. However, the reality was that lack of means completely limited any offensive action on Bournonville's part. But Bournonville followed the French army at a prudential distance, and limited Spanish reinforcements arrived to Catalonia, from Valencia, Mallorca, Italian possessions and Andalucia.
Finally at this point, the truce came, and soon peace was signed, although war would start again in 1688 between the Grand Alliance and France...

Luckily part of the Order of Battle is already available in my collection, here some examples...

Hello friends, I have updated my blog with this new entry:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/02/french-enfants-perdus-late-xvii-c.html
I have finally finished another unit for my Gerona 1684 project. French "assault troops" and grenadiers, as described by witnesses to the battle:
The French assault was at follows; hundreds of "Enfants Perdús" or Forlorn hopes were formed, armed in the following manner " the first line or row with helmets, cuirasses, buckler/round shields and swords. The second and third lines there were troops with war axes and grenadiers". and after those assault troops, 5000 men.
This assault took place during the summer of 1684, I guess this kind of troops were also used in other sieges in late XVII c. but I was surprised to know that as late as in 1684, there were still in use in the French army such an old fashioned armed soldiers, with the helmet, back and breast plate, buckler and sword. But I fell in love with the description of them and had to paint a unit for myself!
The leader of the unit is Captain Jacques Sauvage, a grenadier veteran of the War of Devolution, and Franco Dutch War ... He was successful in the siege of Lille in 1667, the siege of Maastricht 1673 and the siege of Valenciennes in 1677. He has spent the last two decades fighting the Dutch, Spaniards and Imperials, and now, in the summer of 1684 his unit was ready and in front of the gates of Gerona, an easy task, or so he had been told...

Well, monsieur Sauvage is a fictional character of my campaign, but all the rest is historical, I have painted the unit in the uniform of regiment de "La Reine", a regiment present at the siege of Gerona. I thought about using several uniforms in the same in unit, something common in this kind of ad hoc units for sieges, but the miniatures have the French classical helmet, and that helmet was issued only to native French and Swiss, not to German regiments in French service, and there were German soldiers from regiments Furstemberg or La Marck in the general assault against the walls, so I could not paint soldiers from these regiments with the miniatures I had, so finally only regiment "La Reine"
The miniature of the leader, as I said in the previous post of the blog, is by Tercio Creativo, and although it is inspired by a 17th century French soldier, it is NOT historical, since it wears a tabard with the fleur de lis, as if it were a king's musketeer, and a classic helmet typical of france from 1660, but is very nice and well sculpted so I could not resist using him for my enfants perdús.
Following the contemporary description of the French assault on the main breach of the Gerona wall, I wanted to represent an assault unit armed with breastplate and back, helmet, buckler and sword, and behind them soldiers armed with axes or halbers and finally grenadiers in the third row.

Most of them are conversions of miniatures from Northstar 1672 French range and one from Dixons, with plastic weapons from Warhammer (axes/halberds) and Warlord games (swords and pistol) the bucklers, since I didn't have 17th century bucklers on hand, I had to resort to some Sassanid shields from Aventine, and then another one made of green stuff made a from a 30 years war miniature.

Finally, I like to base this kind of unit in individual round bases, in order to use them in skirmish games too.
I hope you like them!

Hello mates,
another quick update of my late XVII c. in my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/05/marquis-of-castel-rodrigo-spanish.html
In this post I just wanted to show you my latest addition to a parallel project I am doing, which is the War of Devolution, a transition conflict between 30 Years War/Franco Spanish War and Franco Dutch War, I mean transition in terms of uniforms and equipment, because it occured in late 1660' decade.
The general I have painted is Marquis of Castel Rodrigo, Francisco de Moura Corte Real (13 December 1621 – 26 November 1675) was a Portuguese nobleman who served as Viceroy of Sardinia and Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. Despite being Portuguese, his family remained loyal to Spain when the Portuguese revolt began in 1640.
The miniature is a full conversion from a North Star 1672 French pikeman lower body, and 1898 miniatures "Don Juan Jose of Austria" upper half body. I am quite pleased with the look of the miniature, in my opinion it has the look of a 1660' military leader, with the blackened armor and the distinctive collar of that time, just before cravattes became more popular.
[img]https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SdUVcYptC74/YIe_Jou2mNI/AAAAAAAAEOw/5DjB9wgghRwuqDi6t6cp9otNZypuc1Y9ACLcBGAsYHQ/s474/D._FRANCISCO_DE_MOURA_CORTE_REAL.jpg)

the other miniature is a Walloon ensign, in Dutch or English armour, I used muted tones for the coat, as I have seen these kind of colours in contemporary paintings like this one:
the miniature is a pikeman from North Star 1672. The flag was made by the very talented Mats Elzinga, using Castel Rodrigo's coat of arms in one side of the flag, and Spanish royal coat (of 1667) in the other side of the flag.

Cheers!
I made a blog entry with a piece of history for this conflict here:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2019/03/the-defense-of-dendermonde-1667.html
Under Castel Rodrigo's administration, the Spanish Netherlands suffered a French invasion during the War of Devolution. After the peace of the Pyrinees in 1659, Spanish forces in Flanders were at its minimum, and no soldiers were sent from Spain or Italy in the last 4 years, so Marquis of Castel Rodrigo had to resort to Imperial troops and some German regiments in order to bolster the defenses of the Spanish Netherlands.
Despite his efforts, when the Louis XIV invaded the country with 70.000 troops, the governor had only 20.000 troops, and he placed them in the most important fortified cities, so the first year of the war, a lot of villages and towns fell into French hands in a Baroque "Blitzkrieg". In 1668, Spain signed peace with Portugal and sent several thousands men to reinforce the Army of Flanders, also the rest of the countries, feared a full French conquest of the area and forced the Sun King to sign a peace treaty in favourable terms.

Wonderful painting. :-* :-* :-* :-*

Lovely painting and a great conversion. I just love to see top conversions like this one.
Thanks Paul, I think converting miniatures for this period is one of the things I like most of our hobby. The manufacturers are scarce, so converting is the only way to have more poses and variety.
Cheers

Hello guys,
new blog post here:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/05/28mm-william-prince-of-orange-1672.html
In this post I want to introduce you to my "command base" of my small Dutch army for the Franco Dutch War of 1672-1678: William III of Orange, as commander-in-chief of the army, accompanied by a musketeer and a mounted trumpeteer.
my inspiration was this painting:
mounted trumpeteer on the left, on foot, and William on the right, dressed in green
The miniatures are from Warfare Miniatures and North Star 1672;
-William is from Warfare Miniatures, unmodified, I have only added some shoulder ribbons (from Front Rank), the miniature is a good sculpt, very recommended. I have painted it inspired by the aforementioned painting. he is riding a white horse. For the painting I used Vallejo and Foundry paints, especially for the horse, I used the Foundry Triad of "Artic Grey" until reaching white, I am satisfied with this triad because it makes smooth transitions between triad colors, and as the paint has little covering power , leaves a subtle transition from grey to white. As a negative point of these paints, is that painting over the dark gray primer is very time consuming because they cover very little and several layers are needed ... so my strange advice is: paint the first layer with a grey (Vallejo) and over it, paint the Foundry triad.
-The musketeer is a Dutch musketeer from North Star 1672, painted as a member of Konigsmark regiment, inspired by the fantastic illustration in Bruno Mugnai's book, "WARS AND SOLDIERS IN THE EARLY REIGN OF LOUIS XIV VOLUME 1 :The Army of the United Provinces of the Netherlands 1660-1687" this book is an absoluty MUST for all of you interested on Franco Dutch war or Dutch military... The painting was fast and simple as it is only in blue. I used Foundry blue triad.
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JCWLi8rs-QY/YLCq1_374nI/AAAAAAAAESs/SxRm8P7HhV4Bunn7jf2Sz4SE0FLStgYBACLcBGAsYHQ/s960/120277653_3399201260178070_4145162986388275550_n.jpg)
Konigsmark's musketeer on the left.
Finally, the horseman with the trumpet is from Warfare Miniatures, from Gardes te Paard, with his characteristic uniform, with the loose sleeves, sold by Barry Hilton's great range of late XVII miniatures. I painted it in red, like in the painting in a different color than the rest of his unit, typical of the musicians of that time. I was not brave enough to paint the "W" and the crown over it in the back of the trumpeteer's coat... maybe in the future, when I paint the whole cavalry unit.
On the cornet "pennant" or whatever is called in English the cloth that hangs from the trumpet/Bugle I have tried (within my limited possibilities) to hand-paint the Orange-Nassau coat of arms, I hate painting those little things and I am a huge fan of decals and pre made flags, but in this case I had no choice but to paint it free hand, please don't judge me harsly.
The base is mdf with a little bit of DAS PRONTO putty in order to place William on a somewhat higher ground.

Hello guys,
It has been a while since last time I updated this post! In the last months I was more in a WW2 mood, and also the summer holydays kept me far from my XVII c project, but now I am back here, and now is the turn of some newbies
French Petard
Blog : https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/09/french-petard-xvii-c-siege-party-for.html
This unit is intended for my project "The Siege of Gerona 1684", shown previously in this blog (just tag "Gerona 1684"), although as the pétard is in a separate base, I can use it for games set in 30 Years War or English Civil War or Franco Dutch War...
The soldiers are French, from "La Reine" regiment, present at the historical battle, I like their uniform, so finally I went for them instead of other famous regiments that assaulted the walls of Gerona after a heavy bombardment.
These guys are ready to join my previously painted armoured enfants perdús and grenadiers to storm the breach!

The miniatures are a mixture of Wargames Foundry and Dixon's Grand Alliance, both ranges are quite old, but still very nice with a lot of personality, I love both of them although they are more in the small size compared to more recent North Star 1672 or Front Rank.
There are also minor conversions; the officer with partizan is Foundry Marlburian officer, I cut and trimmed his tricorn, and put him a broad brimmed had and plume instead, also a shoulder ribbon from Front Rank and a partizan by Bicorne miniatures.
The other conversion is a Dixon's grenadier throwing his grenade, he had originally a tricorn too, but it was cut and substituted by a informal tricorn or slouch hat.
Finally the paints are a mix of Foundry triads and Vallejo, I like to mix different shades of light grey to my units in order to break the monotony, this time I used Vallejo neutral grey for some and Citadel Rakarth Flesh+Ivory for the rest.
I specially like the the tones of some Foundry triads like Buff Leather and Dark African Flesh, I use them a lot for creamy tones and dark browns.

TERCIO OF DRAGOONS VALANZART
blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/09/tercio-of-dragoons-vanderpitvalensart.html
Now there is the turn of a unit I painted a while ago, but never featured here, Tercio of Valanzart I did not showed before because I misinterpreted the colors of the uniform, which should be all green, and I painted in green with blue facings because I thought that this unit later became "Dragones de Batavia", during War of Spanish Succession, and that is true... BUT during late XVII the uniform was different from the WSS so now I am thinking about repainting in green the blue parts.
The miniatures are Front Rank 28mm French dragoons from WSS but the Spaniards used in some Tercios the same cap for their Dragoons in Flanders, so I used those miniatures as I am a big fan of Front Rank miniatures. I like to base my dragoons in individual bases and sabot bases because they usually fought in a skirmish mode until the very end of the century.
On January 12, 1676, a Tercio of dragoons were raised in the Netherlands by patent awarded to Niklaus Hartmann to participate in the war in Holland. The command passed the following year to Vandewin Vanderpit and in 1684 to Theodore de Valanzart, with whom the unit participated in the League of Augsburg War.
The flag was taken from the book "Spanish Armies of the League of Augsburg War".

fabulous work on a very interesting period! keep up the good work:)
-
these are so good, with the lovely chiaroscuro effect that must come across so well even at tabletop distance, that it's making me think I really should give black-undercoating another go, properly , finally.
Never understood it conceptually, and the difficulty of getting good coverage etc, but as most people use it these days, it must be 'me'.
but obviously some get better results with it than others as seen here!
-
Tremendous work.

Many thanks guys!!

Never understood it conceptually, and the difficulty of getting good coverage etc, but as most people use it these days, it must be 'me'.
but obviously some get better results with it than others as seen here!
thanks mate, although I don't use black undercoat nowadays, I use dark grey or dark brown undercoat because I have better coverage and the black outlining is done sometimes manually with thinned black paint or with a dark wash (Citadel).
-
ah, blimey, how interesting!
my one concerted attempt at 'dark' undercoating' was with a dark brown funnily enough. Still found getting coverage very difficult.
your approach achieves a great 'look' anyway.
thinking about going zenithal again - black undercoat - drybrushed white (can't get on with airbrushes).
didn't work when I tried it before, but that was with contrast paints, which didn't mask the grainy nature of the dry-brush well enough.

Hello mates,
I have just updated my blog with this thread:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/10/terrain-month-28mm-artillery-position.html?showComment=1635147495666#c5894652180376306918
I read on Twitter that October was indeed #Terraintober, a month in which a wargamer should paint a piece of scenery, so I thought about my half built earthworks that have been laying around for months and started working on that unfinished project (from a long list of unfinished projects!).
So here it is, I just have finished the artillery position from scratch, made of expanded polystyrene, beach sand, wooden stirring sticks /balsa wood and Renedra's plastic gabions. I added Warfare Miniatures "Chevaux de Frisie" and also some bits from good old Warhammer 6th edition Empire cannon.
It has been a pretty easy project, with just some basic airbrush and drybrush paintjob.

I added also some static grass because the whole thing seemed a littled boring to me, just in earthy brown tones. Also the details here and there break the monotony.
the building was easy and fun, although not as quick as I initially thought, because of the 2 part plastic gabions. I built the artillery position before getting my 3d printed gabions... So next time I build earthworks, I will use my 3D printed gabions and my recently ordered Avanpost positions !
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhT-SnHT6ElJOfpUu-pVGdhzVgfsObJvNdCMzrSrHTslTsUjmJAAM4bTOo0dOE4dJqrRKCmgV89bO9cfUMLekjVe2xvnBMdv2qKapXMvYNlf-Ith49i0k6jB66EZnqWbXpNh60rStI01oUeFwXRBHNXTgeQR_zN9fTyOhuruYy8sH3fSErqDGO2WmOmSw=s2048)
For the sand, I mixed PVA glue with beach sand from my area, and art store cheap brown paint and covered the whole thing (but the gabions and wood!) then just I airbrushed the main colours with Vallejo paints thinned with airbrush thinner (Ammo Mig) and It worked perfectly, the Vallejo Model Color range is fully "airbrushable" I recommend it for terrain and big things.
Here is the finish result with different miniatures just to give an idea of the size

Hello guys,
I have a new post on my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/12/speedpaintingquickshade-tercio-de.html
A couple of months ago I bought from a Facebook friend, Richard O' Connor, a bunch of (mostly) upainted miniatures from North Star 1672, but also 9 painted miniatures in green and yellow uniform, from Tercio of Barcelona in its first uniform for the early 1670's. They were based in round single bases, so I thought about rebase them on my regular 4cm x 4cm bases for infantry, and also painted the rest of miniatures in order to get a full unit (usually 16 infantry models in my armies).
I wanted this to be made "fast" so I took several models I had, like the "French" grenadier on the left from Northstar 1672, a Reiver Castings new Spanish model, and new Spaniard musketeers from Northstar 1672.
In order to paint them quickly, I airbrushed them all in green, and then just applied a basecoat of all the others colors. They were ready for the Quickshade application! I slapped on the thing all over the miniatures, lightly thinned with White Spirit, and then leave them to dry for 48 hours... Then I re applied the basecoat colours and some minor highlights (2-3 coats of lighter colors), then a matt varnish coat, and they were ready to fight.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjO58rrFDtWwlM__6XsqPmxBAlxhBd-63OsmzHk5V_tmPD55cXTBz8ZzOS49CtJkTFFjP-oytW0xgDaDYda-n5oCsEIvaQtAPNdKSF8ZOt9WYrH08fFVckkYWW1HV6p8gNU7Q5SdAiozkjJcHaFnRJCYhqMtHprbAGErG7YppN_5bznUfi7pM0kB2sVjw=s2048)
That is why this Tercio was speed painted...because I had half unit painted already by another painter, and the other part, quickly painted with the Quickshade method!
The blue flag with Barcelona´s coat of arms is from Minairons miniatures, a Spanish based company, the other one, generic with the Burgundy cross... I don't remember.

They are now ready to take part in Catalonian campaign against Schombergs' French forces, that were defeated in Bellegarde fortress and Maureillas field battle in 1673-4. You can read that action here in the blog :

Hello guys,
After some months I have finished another "unit" for my collection, this time the King of France, Louis XIV in a command base.
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/04/le-roi-soleil-louis-xiv-command-base.html
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihv16DoufY9qAF0jAXayBkcByj_v__T1JSX6c6HfYpU1W2O-_8fJ1sd-ZhvqtkiKjxF25gHHPRCrGrGBWGQnVSJImj0DfSFXBa3fTuGo7pZm3ADqvqLAr8tY3j5FMWzmpZa3bTYx-JtqhAiCFuu_AQwvIkPDiT_y5U6n4_-Yf2Ltr3OWYF17hVYAGu4w/s4032/IMG-1493.jpg)
The miniature is a conversion of Wargames Foundry's Louis XIV and North Star 1672 Monmouth miniature, that is for the rider, the horse is from 1898 miniatures.
I roughly sculpted a sash with green stuff, in order to hide the seam/joint of the two halves of the body (upper part Louis XIV and lower part Monmouth).
I got my inspiration for the colors from contemporary paintings and other painters/wargamers like Mark Allen, who is a real master of the conversion works on miniatures for this period.
I also added a sergeant or officer from the Gardes Françaises in its early uniform (prior to 1685 blue and read coats), and another officer using D'Artagnan miniature from North Star 1672. I personally don't like very much the size of his swords and it is not the most beautiful miniature from that range, but I used it anyway.
Although I have several commanders for my French army, I wanted to have Louis XIV in 28mm as he was common in the sieges during the War of Devolution 1667-1668 and also during Franco Dutch War 1672-1678 in Flanders.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQG2zowLiQd-J76LyfksVTRcJfNP5Od3fepQuQFrCFJ3VbbcXHPCyZE3k4SK6KQyG0ap9D3N63roVy7Kdbrf7U88VQNcOJ-HC2ZuKhhh0SIMzlC3piGCWME9bvDmSzObnNg1POx1OK2NtZ_tQBf_vQ26e2MBsTa6g-NAqooRFQzDhUQ3I5M7UdxDNaMg/s1879/Louis_XIV_Equestrian_Portrait.jpg)
I used mostly Wargames Foundry and Vallejo paints, I particularly like the "Conker Brown" triad for horses, I used for the first time here on the horse. Also the Scarlet triad is great for red coats, in the case of the sergeant. I also repeated the new matt varnish by Greenstuff World, this product is top notch ultra matt varnish, applied by brush.

Helion's book by Rene Chartrand "the Armies and Wars of the Sun King Volume I The Guards of Louis XIV " was also an invaluable source for information about the uniforms and equipment of the miniatures involved in this command base.

Hi friends,
I have just update the blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/05/my-30-years-war-french-army-so-far.html
This month I present to you the current state of my 30 Years War / TYW French army, an small force today, but bigger in the near future (I hope!).
As you know, I am more orientated to later XVII century conflicts, but I still did not want to neglect my Thirty Years War forces, so in order to force myself to paint more units for this army, I took all the units for a "family photo".
If you want to see the origin of this army, you can just search in the blog the tagged words "French" or "30 years war" and you will easily find the other 3 or 4 posts about this army and its units.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPu3tIk5zlfVsTWWG8ouKOHP5R7Wsj_lcGfFa7EKfy3bqNaixXc9vuL41nXu_zX1o6WDrJbtWyBbYKJ8-AM7z4RPbfMHJBGaT15CtnT5GJotuVr_4wGH_GwfdhDvR6Y6zLuh0ujlx3aBA-frOi3KLl5i1QF_sj5BAlUmFsJe3fNif8ngYg0g5V_KhwUw/s4032/IMG-3169.jpg)
Just to name the parts of the army, there are so far painted (either by me or by other painter):
-regiment of foot "Turenne"
-regiment of foot "Picardie"
-squadron of horse "Dauphin Gendarmes"
-Army command base
-artillery piece (an ex Swedish gun, now French)

This army is primarly for Catalonia and Flanders, and I also have a painted English regiment, that can be also a Rebel pro French Catalan tercio, because Catalan also used St. George cross in red over a white background... So that unit can fight as English in Flanders with the French in mid 1650' or as Catalan in Catalonian front in 1640-52.
Appart from those previously shown, I have already in my list, semi painted or just started :
-1 more artillery piece
-regiment of foot "Lyonnais"
-squadron of horse (I have not decided which one)
-enfants perdús/forlorn hope
Cheers!

Very nice indeed. Great mix of figures.

Hello again guys!

Here is the part II and final of the civilian and milita unit for the siege of Gerona 1684.

I've added an unarmored pikeman from NorthStar 1672, turned into a gunner, painted in earthy colors, in order to give him a more civilian look. Also a Front Rank militiaman, from the "Monmouth Rebellion" range, I replaced his scythe with a halberd, to give him a more military touch.

The gabions are 3D printed, the Chevaux de Frise is from Warfare Miniatures, and the fence is resin from a Polish brand whose name I can't remember (sorry!). Regarding the gun/saker, it's a mixture of various brands... Warlord carriage, Warhammer wheels...
These defenders, although painted and modeled to "serve" in the 1684 Siege of Girona, are nevertheless generic and versatile enough to fight in any 17th century siege from 1665 onwards.
In this particular case, they will load the cannon with shrapnel, nails, stones, buttons, or coins to wreak havoc on attackers at close range, plus it can fight well in melee mode and musketry fire, making it a potent unit: entrenched, with melee and ranged attacks!
The other two guys; kneeling musketeer and soldier with plug bayonet were shown in the previous post about this unit, and they are Bicorne and Front Rank miniatures respectively.

Hello mates
new post about 30 years war French:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/06/30-years-war-french-regiment-lyonnais.html
As I continue with my 30 Years War mood, I painted part of the regiment Lyonnais in the last few days, and then "only" the musketeers will be left in order to have the unit completed and playable.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3M2EsBq26qakmi0Fcr9XSVqtuchdDrjbLmmnzWd6qKZD2nPImNz7b_-6I950gcc8Zp5H7BBRx5Kt5-oPVkjiwwYJrx_dq2BT4IfrwycRhzUA7DNEc9A_wPkEC9Q0vWTueFbOOxGpoKaoR5vG8OtAyiEbx0cyo5zjT_gtNBfrupYI3BLjFmc6XYldBlw/s4032/IMG_4096.jpg)
I chose Regiment Lyonnais because it was one the first French regiments of XVII c. and it fought under the command of Philipe de La Mothe, and then Le Grand Condé in the field battles of Santa Cecilia and sieges of Lerida/Lleida from 1644-47 during Franco-Spanish War of 1635-59, all won by the Spaniards.
I used a wide variety of miniatures ; Warlord Games, Bicorne, TAG, Horcata/Empress, Steve Barber and one Old Glory, I think they don't look bad together despite being quite a few manufacturers mixed in the same base.
The flag is from Warlord Games, and the white French flag was free downloaded from the internet.

I will slowly paint the musketeers, that are also from several manufacturers, Perry, Foundry, Avanpost, Warlord...
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha2khho465RGevnCGyZ-v4xbd57J8KaI8zDpkhQlP6bS8vHnqXZ6uas-XrVEExvsVrARf7Z6kyydC9QYVcqSj_plrc3L0Ac2GNXuDXbJEdYCb2b1ncSgpESdlMYKU1MUDK68k95Kf2DqR0CeC7xZiVHGEfVvnL_XX0JwPxnXwuifCEQLavHCZOw0CiVw/s4032/IMG_4057.jpg)
By the way, the battles of 30 Years War in the southern front, in the forties of XVII c. are superbly explained by Pierre Picouet in his book:

Hello guys,
new post:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/06/capitan-alatriste.html
This time I have painted a miniature that I have special fondness for, "Captain Alatriste", well , a proxy of him by Anno Domini 1666 miniatures.
The Polish company Anno Domini 1666, produces excellent metal miniatures set in the 17th century, with various factions including Poles, French, Germans, Spanish, Ottomans, even generic fantasy ones, for their skirmish game, which I have not tried.
In my case I bought some French king's musketeers, some Spanish ones, and some loose miniatures.
For those who do not know, Captain Alatriste is the main character in a series of novels by the prestigious Spanish writer and member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Letters Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
The novels deal with the adventures of a Spanish soldier in the first half of the 17th century, born in 1582. The novels are very fun and historically accurate, and the protagonists face Dutch, Venetians, Turks, French, English, pirates and against other swashbucklers, in Madrid and other places in Europe, Alatriste and his mates participated in the siege of Breda in 1625, the battle of Nordling in 1634, or the battle of Rocroi in 1643.

Viggo Mortensen in the film about Capitan Alatriste (2006)
I personally will use the captain alatriste miniature as the leader of my Warband for skirmish games like Donnybrook or a custom-historical version of mordheim.
I painted him mostly with Foundry paint triads, and then an ultra matt varnish by Green Stuff World.
Cheers!
-
Nice figure & very nice paint-job on it.

Lovely :-*

Cracking work!

Alatriste is one of my favorite characters, great work bringing him to life.

Superb 8)

Great looking figure and paint job!! I love the character and the books, unfortunatly they stopped translating them into english
-
Brillant paintjob on the Captain Alatriste!
I really love the novels and did enjoy the somewhat strange movie starring Viggo Mortensen.
Do you know there’s a really good series by Arte (iirc, 2 seasons). I watched it on Amazon; it’s much closer to the novels.

He's terrific! :-*
Great mini and paintjob!

Tremendous painting.

Thank you all guys for all the kind comments :)

Hi guys,
New post here:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/07/battalion-gun-for-tercio-morados-viejos.html
hope your summer is going great! After a week off, I came back home and finished an ad hoc base for a Tercio I painted some years ago... a battalion gun or "mansfelete" light gun of Tercio "Old Purples" or "Morados Viejos" for my Spanish army of 1670-90'.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhmZX_TcIMEoLZ7W0WOz173brQEpniUDReH7bU0q-JM4JyVmjDwFTBDU25dvgWC2vLkr77G03H10g5HeB6kOXrrtxm27WaWkeiCdEPqO1AKxMyfpd0CdLTdlGcyQKOxsYZiqw66-oWr6UDf8oONPkMUt98LdV1sSDNU0RjWLvTso36M4hiZsE5n8gFw/s4032/image_16873729.JPG)
I used an old Phoenix miniatures Spanish Musketeer, cut off his hands, musket etc, and replaced with GW plastic hands of artillery crew of the Empire great cannon! my Warhammer Empire bits box is extremely useful for all kind of medieval, renaissance or baroque miniature conversions.
The other artillery crew is a brand new Reiver Castings miniature from their nice Franco Dutch War range.
The battalion gun itself is a 15mm Napoleonic carriage with a 28mm gun from Blood & Plunder miniatures.
Both miniatures were painted with Foundry Paints and Vallejo, specially Royal Purple paint!

Hi guys!
New Post here https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/07/xvii-c-marksman-sniper-for-tercio.html
I hope your summer is going fine, despite this terrible hot weather... now I continue in my Pike and Shot mood, so I am slowly (as always) building a small warband of a Spanish Tercio for skirmish games such as Donnybrook, or our modification of Mordheim, adapted to 30 Years War.
Last month I painted Captain Alatriste, using a miniature from "Anno Domini 1666" miniatures, you can see it in this blog in the last entry of June 2022. And I also have the standard bearer from "Tercio Creativo", which I will show to you soon, and now I have painted a sniper or marksman, also from "Tercio Creativo".
This brand is a Spanish company which produces some good quality resin miniatures for their sci-fi and alt-historical games like “1650 a capa y a espada” a fantasy game set in an alternate world with some factions inspired in mid XVII C. Spanish and French.
I don’t play that game, but I really like how their miniatures look, and some of them are very useful for historical games 30 Years War style !
So this miniature is called “Zurriago” in their catalog, but currently is out of production, but probably will be for sale soon.
I instantly fell in love with the oversized heavy musket and the aesthetic of the miniature, the sculpt is very good, with no flash or bubles... so with those merits he is now the marksman of my warband or little skirmishes force.
As you can see, it’s full of little details (very time consuming to paint). I painted him mostly in Foundry paints triads, I specifically like their brownish shades like conquer brown, buff leather, and dark African flesh, also use Vallejo paints, and this time, I resorted to Citadel Rakarth Flesh for the shirt of the soldier. In past times I used only citadel (from 2000 onwards) but their tendency to dry out inside the pot made my change my paint range to other paints.
The varnish is my new favorite matt varnish; Green Stuff World ultra matt varnish!
I hope you like the finish result :)

I remember Tercio's first KS... I simply had to have all their Capa y Espada miniatures, some of the most lovely sculpts I've ever dealt with.
You've done a magnificent job on the sniper, the face and smoke working especially well.
-
That musket is so massive it looks like a wall gun (aka rampart gun)! Your painting is magnificent, and the Capt. Alatriste is a true portrait figure.

Many thanks !! haahaha yeah, it is... you know it is a fantasy miniature set in 17th c.
Cheers

Hello guys !!
Here I am again with a little update of my fav XVII c project, the Siege of Girona:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2022/12/28mm-french-command-base-marshall.html
This time I come back to my beloved Girona 1684 project. As you may notice, I really like painting small scenes and command bases, and it just so happens that my French forces needed a leader, and his leader was Bernardin Gigault, Marquis de Bellefonds (1630–1694), or just Marshall Bellefonds as will call him.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEWw15mC_EnDRTgPWytN34Z6cWY0YvArFJx7VDrWUak_YdHXjKtN31LwqB9iUwoqWHdUr3XHC61rqMVws46Bqej07S7sIH_PVa6s_gnJdjT7gD2-Lxuy2sf6lKE8uCm8uvXT7ZIfoF2v2gEsGRdV4Gp_ueipTlML5hoySW_SGutodK5P2cxW7NlF_x6Q/s2048/IMG_1893.JPEG)
The miniature of him is a nice Reiver Castings miniature on horse, from his 1672 Franco Dutch range I think, he is labelled as Marshall Turenne. I painted him to resemble a little bit to the painting of the true Bellefonds portrait, with a light blue band and a red fabric in the background.
By the way, the full account of the battle of Girona 1684 is here on the blog :
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2021/01/new-campaign-project-siege-of-gerona.html
Coming back to our Marshall, he commanded the French army in Catalonia in the campaingn of 1684,
he went on campaing that spring, with the objective of the town of Gerona, Girona in Catalan. some important actions were the crossing of the river Ter, where he attacked several times before capturing it after the orderly withdrawal of the Spanish defenders to Girona Bellefonds finally seized Pont-Major at night at the cost of some 1,000 casualties against 150 Spanish, and he fortified it, and formally initiating the siege of Gerona.
With the arrival of artillery and reinforcements, Bellefonds' forces numbered between 16,000 and 17,000 troops.
the full siege is in the link above...
After the siege, possibly the French marshal had lost since the beginning of the campaign about a third of his men, about 5,000.
Bellefonds remained in the Ampurdán with 11,000 men and the possibility of an attack by the French navy on Barcelona caused panic in the city. On the other hand, after a short siege, Cadaqués, in the coast and with an insufficient garrison surrendered on June 26. Spanish general Bournonville followed the French army at a prudential distance, and limited Spanish reinforcements arrived to Catalonia, from Valencia, Mallorca, Italian possessions and Andalucia.
Finally at this point, the truce came, and soon peace was signed, although war would start again in 1688 between the Grand Alliance and France...

The second miniature is a recent discovery! I just found out about this man a couple of weeks ago! and I just NEEDED a miniature of him!
lieutenant-général François de Calvo, this is an interesting character whose brief biography will be exposed in the following paragraphs. I used a miniature by Wargames Illustrated, Giants in Miniature range: John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough. but... again I changed his identity and "converted" him into a Spanish/Catalan/French general! treason, yes...
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyg0KGA6Pamqkodrn0Bh3IxZdM6Oo3EZ6XlHEUxRbNIvfbYRYztdnNQ6c0YiQ0U1pzF0YpuIKeCKr32Z2fVgqS2LLL7bc9vPyC60geOna77nlMjNtKSQcPzTHLqC_uO1qzsfyTIcFsoCrEDKr7tltLHilGq_Vixb3s1JzU2hVef4ZVf6HZ1sn9_hDYkQ/s473/Fran%C3%A7ois_de_Calvo.jpg)
Just painted a "French" moustache and added shoulder ribbons.
François de Calvo, Count of Calvo, baptized in Barcelona on July 28, 1625 and died in Deinze on May 29, 1690, was a French gentleman and soldier of Catalan origin in the 17th century.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgINfXyH0Wcv_Uu0dy4xBddYVAYDdO4KSyO9zWi2DlTD7OY40GQSjwjCcKYBVGsJuVozoskoCKnRtqZExU05KBqwLrr7fU9_f3mq8rM7PlOWSluP2h5TudjZMHG1i5CMx9ajBt6Mnv0ulIWuBHDtqLNKGMd8DZ-CEZT1STcKELMK8XEpyknXX2BQ2bFuA/s2048/IMG_1895.JPEG)
Coming from a good Catalan family, he made the choice to enlist in the French army while the Reaper War was raging. After having spent time in the infantry, he joined the cavalry and became a captain in the cavalry regiment of Aguilar in 1647. He managed to raise a regiment and became mestre de camp in 1654.
A remarkable soldier, Calvo took part in all the campaigns of the reign of Louis XIV and distinguished himself particularly in Catalonia and Holland. He obtained the rank of brigadier of the king's armies in 1674. General esteemed by the king for his efficiency, he was finally made lieutenant-general of the armies in 1676 following his intrepid defense of Maastricht. He became a knight of the king's orders shortly before his death in 1688.
In 1684, the king's service led him to return to Catalonia. Having swum across the Ter, he harshly charged the Spanish lines beyond the Pont-Major and almost captured the Duke of Bournonville, their general; but the night forces him to be cautious and he prefers to withdraw. He besieged Girona alongside Marshal de Bellefonds but failed to take the city and retreated with heavy casualities.
League of Augsburg War
The war having started again in 1688, against the Spaniards and their allies, he served in the army of Flanders, under the orders of Marshal Humières. On December 31, 1688, the king made him a knight of his orders and sent him, on May 24, 1689, at the head of a corps of five thousand men, to defend the northern border of the kingdom which twenty thousand Spanish and Dutch soldiers threatened. He died the following year.
So this man was Spanish/Catalan who joined the French and reached the greatests honours in Louis XIV armies, a traitor for some a hero for others, but he deserves a place in our little game.
The last miniature is a standard bearer of "La Reine" regiment, present in the battle, I used a fantastic Warfare Miniatures pikeman of the Maison du Roi range, painted using the colours of La Reine regiment and added a flag with Front Rank's French finials on top. The flag is free from the internet, I downloaded from a blog called https://nba-sywtemplates.blogspot.com/ and it is quite good, it is the colonel flag of La Reine regiment as previously said.
The gabions are 3d print and the base is just mdf with Spanish beach sand (it is always a pleasure to go to the beach and steal some sand ).
I also painted a command tent, from Baueda, bought several years ago and painted now for this occasion. I made a quick and dirty flag using Bellefonds' family coat of arms and attached to the top of the temp, but not glued, in order to remove when I want :)

Hello there!
I have just updated my blog:
https://spanishleadpainting.blogspot.com/2023/09/mad-for-war-ark-royal-miniatures-11200.html
and also this thread
After a loooong summer break, I have come back into painting minis again.
I have been reading a book about a naval battle right off the coast of my town, the battle of Cartagena-Cabo de Gata in 1643.
During a relief operation during the Barbary/Algerian siege of Oran, then in Spanish hands, a French fleet appeared off Cartagena, French tried to sent fireships to the narrow bay of the port, but were beaten after some hours of fire from the port's batteries. Then the French headed south and found the Spanish unprepared for battle.
The French fleet, superior in number and with better quality ships, (41 vs 25) made the Spanish fleet take refuge in the port of Cartagena. The casualties are not exctaly known, but the Spanish probably lost 2 sunk ships and 2 captured. The French lost 1 sunk ship and 4 fireships. The galleys closed the port to the French, who could not enter it.
So I have been in the mood of XVIIc. sailing ships lately. I have just finished my small model ships, and also I am working on a list of actions and scenerarios to play with, all of them historical.
The models are, obviously from Ark Royal miniatures, by Warfare Miniatures/The League of Augsburg brand. In a previous post about ships and scales, I was thinking about painting and wargaming naval warfare in 1/600 or in 1/1200 scale and I was not sure which of the two scales to choose for the project... I finally opted for 1/1200, I think it fits better my needs of squadrons of 6-12 ships per side.
The models are a 26 gun frigate or "fragata", a war galley and an advice jacht.

I use plastic bases, painted in blue, and most important, with AK interactive water gel over it.
paper flags re scaled by Lluis from Minairons. In this scale sometimes it is better to paint the flags on the metal flags casts in the ships. For instance for Dutch or French, as their flags are super easy to paint. But other navies with more difficult patterns are more complicated, so I will mix paper and metal painted flags.
The modelling and painting stages were very simple, but the tricky part was adding the simple rigging to the ship, and the photo etch ratlines (from the same brand! ).
There were a huge number of actions and battles of 80 Years War/ Thirty Years War and Franco Spanish War, involving Spanish fleet, all three were interconected and often simultaneously. I recently read that no other navy in the world up to that time (and maybe ever!) had fought for so long , against so many powerful enemies at once.
In the decade of 1660 the Spanish navy declined for 30 years because of the lack of funds, This coincided in time with the admirable rise of the English, Dutch and French navies. It would not be until the beginning of the 18th century when Spanish naval power grew again until it was in the "top 3" in the world until Trafalgar.
My main interest nowadays is wargaming mostly early to mid XVII actions in this scale. I placed an order last week to get more little ships!
I hope you like them!
