interesting claim - MEN FROM EARLY MIDDLE AGES WERE NEARLY AS TALL AS MODERN PEOPLE
http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/medimen.htm
usual wikipedia warnings to be assumed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height

Edit: so, what if anything does this say about the heights of our historical military miniatures?
In fantasy, everyone's PC can be 6+ feet tall of course.
Gracias,
Glenn

I note, with amusement, that Steckel's average early Middle Ages Northern European male was 173.4cm tall and that 1734mm divided by 285 is 6.08 ;)

It's well known that the Scandinavian and Germanic people were unusually tall compared to most of their contemporaries and are still amongst the world's tallest today.
I've heard one theory that a good diet (specifically a lot of dairy for the calcium) and warrior based societies resulted in taller people. It seems to fit ... kind of. Except in the case of the Mongols. Feck, back to the drawing board.
