Hi Folks!

Long time lurker on LAF here, primarily formerly seen hanging around the Bazaar of Obscurities. This is my first ever proper project log, so it seems appropriate that I start with the first army I got into when I started wargaming all those years ago; the dreaded Nurgle Chaos Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000. I'm now doing an army consisting of pre-scale creep minis, and was looking for a bit of feedback on an armour colour scheme. Left, Middle, or Right? Let me know your thoughts!

Welcome to the forum! I have always found the people on LAF to be a helpful bunch and a source of good ideas, so hopefully you’ll have a similar experience.

Regarding the marines, they all look good, but I like the one on the right best. Not sure why, but that colour palette appeals to me.

Hullo folks!

Thanks for all the responses, and a quick update. The armour scheme on the right proved the most popular by some way; now it's just a question of deciding the base. I did two more test models, and once again need opinions. Which do people like the most? The black rim and grey rubble theme on the left, or the brown rim and desert look of the one on the right?

For those interested, the armour style is in fact taken from an old back issue of White Dwarf from the early noughties (around the time of the Eye of Terror campaign), updated with modern paints. I'll scan it shortly for anyone interested; those old WDs were always so chock full of creative stuff, and it's a shame that GW has still never really recaptured that glory.

I would say right again as it's a bit more generic than the grey one and could be used in more settings.

Uploaded here is the article from an early noughties White Dwarf that inspired my current paint scheme. It's pretty easy to do in practice, and is very forgiving when it comes to making mistakes, as Nurgle miniatures tend to be! I remember reading this feature as a kid, so was very happy when I came across it in a job lot of back issues I brought a few years ago. Obviously the paint range is out of date, but if you want to do something similar yourself, the armour and banding can be done as follows:

Armour:
1. Base Citadel Doombull Brown (over a black primer)
2. Heavy drybrush Vallejo Model Color US Olive Drab
3. Drybrush Vallejo Game Color Camouflage Green
4. Drybrush Vallejo Game Color Dead Flesh

Banding:
1. Base Citadel Skrag Brown
2. Wash with Citadel Nuln Oil or Army Painter Dark Tone
3. Paint patches of Vallejo Game Color Orange Fire
4. Paint chips of Citadel Leadbelcher (or whatever gunmetal paint you use as standard)

Note (07/01/23): I've found it's significantly quicker just to use Gore Grunta Fur contrast paint instead of steps 1 and 2 for the banding. It shaves about 10 minutes off the process (with the usual way taking 25 mins per mini) and gives a virtually identical result.

Altough I prefer black rims on bases, I like the brownish one aesthetic on the right  better.

I've been painting my regular (GW-style) base rims with a desaturated brown (resembling the old Citadel Graveyard Earth) for over a decade now. As I use the same paint as a basecoat for my tables too, I find this makes the bases blend into the terrain that much better...

I like the blackened basing as it compliments the grim colour scheme rather nicely. Fully appreciate thh other version for tying into terrain though.

I preferred  the one on the left in the original shot, but didn't reply in time so it's my own fault. Though to be fair, they all look really good!

The scheme does rather look like the colours of the forum though, and reminds me somewhat of the LAF's own homebrew Space Marine chapter, the Lead Legion - I'm sure you can find mention of it somewhere! If you can, check it our - it may give you a good excuse for the Chaos Marines' colour scheme...
