Well, I haven't been idle while everyone else has been painting furiously for the Lead Painters League ;)
I've been working on four new units for my Wars of the Roses forces - and here's the first of them complete: A company of Scots mercenary pike.
Built from the 'European Infantry 1450 - 1500' box, with a few bits from the original Wars of The Roses box thrown in. And the Man-at-arms with the hammer is from one of the metal packs.
Enjoy :)

So that's Scots and Flemish mercenaries done...
Next up, Milanese Condottieri... They're proving to be a lot of fun :smt001
-
They are beautiful,brilliant colour use,basing,flipping brilliant :-*
-
You're not making any friends here you know.
Git :D
-
Stunning. I take my hat off to you sir, you are one the few painters I have seen who can actually paint Perry figures to that standard.
-
Lovely as always, Cap'! :-*
You'll have to pardon my benighted ignorance when it comes to historical topics, but do they have any particular features that distinguish them as Scots?
-
Love the painted helmet; never would have occured to me to do that.
-

Seconded.

Words and emoticons fail me. .........
-
Lovely as always, Cap'! :-*
Absolutely!

My understanding is that Scots armies looked basically the same (remote highlander-types excepted) as any other armed man in the UK at the time. The Cap's figures all have that fabulously executed blue and white saltire of St Andrew (the Scottish flag) as an identifier, though! ;)
-
So good I'll praise them twice 8) Excellent, even by your own standard Richard :-*
-
Fantastic! I'm soooo glad your not in the LPL. That basing is great. Is that just a display base you've got them on?
P.s. I couldn't spot any bottles of Irn-bru in the pockets or any deep fried mars bars anywhere!!!!! ;)
-
brilliant just brilliant
inspirational for me :D

Not many differences between soldiers of North-West Europe (France included), actually. Except the national cross in use for this period :white saltire on blue for Scotland, red cross on white for England, white cross for France, red saltire for Burgundy...
...or a black cross for Brittany, thank you :)
Wonderful work. Even if they don't wear a black cross ;)
-
Thanks all :)

Plus they're carrying pikes - the Scots 'schiltron' was well known pike formation in the late Middle Ages.
But apart from that, I admit they could be pretty much anybody ;)
I was going to do them as a bit more of a ragbag, but somehow this rather smart beige and claret livery kind of emerged as I went along ::)
-
Very nicely done - those mercs must have just finished a particularly well paid job ;)
-
Stunning work :-* :-* :-*
The colours are great.
-
Brilliant work, Capt'n!
Given how many units of yours I've seen painted I should think you are close to running out of color combos. :o
;)
-
Wonderful work. The technique is magnificent, as always, and they strike just the right balance between a coherent force (by virtue of the saltire) and a wild gaggle of Scotsmen desperately scouring the Midlands for a Takeaway that sells deep-fried haggis at this time of war.
-
Splendid simply splendid, power to the plastic.
-
i really love them!!!
you started using some less monochromatic (or dicromatic) colour schemes, those mercenaries are GREAT!
-
As the others said : a beautiful paint job.
-
Whoa... Missed this one :)
Up to your usual stunning standard again :-* :-* Will you ever paint a shit figure ;D
How many have you got left to do out of the many boxes you have? ;)
cheers
James
-
I'm surprised you didn't save these for the next LPL!!! Fantastic work.
-
Thanks all ;)
How many have you got left to do out of the many boxes you have? ;)
I've got through 4 boxes - 2 each of WOTR infantry and mercs: which would be 160 figures if I built them all. I reckon I'll outturn on about 100 of the plastic figures finished, with all the rest cannibalised for conversions or spares... Plus about 30 of the metal foot.
That's until they release the plastic mounted men-at-arms of course, when I'll need to get some more boxes of infantry to see what cunning creative combinations can be achieved ::)
I'm surprised you didn't save these for the next LPL!!!
Ah well, can't wait another year ;)
I have actually painted the metal scurriers as well (well, most of them) which I was saving for another painting competition, but that seems to be a bit slow coming round these days. So maybe I'll just have to go public with those and paint something else in the meantime... Will have to see...
-
Ooooh!
-
They're alright I suppose.... ;)

I always look for your posts. I can't think of another painter who consistently puts out so many great figures. Miniature-porn! Just great.

I wish I could paint like that. It's just truly MASTERFUL.
-
Absolutely stunning stuff Cap'n. o_o o_o o_o o_o o_o :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
One thing that hasn't been talked about is the really high quality of the cameraq work too- an oft overlooked part of showing mini's on any fora 8) 8) 8) 8) 8).
Can't wait to see the 'Lombards' :).
Darrell.
-
Thanks again chaps :)
I completely agree with you Darrell. Being a good painter is only half the battle. Being able to create a good picture is just as important - more so almost. Look at the LPL: time and again you see really good paintjobs let down by fuzzy focus and poor framing, cropping or composition.
Equally, you can find lots of examples of pretty average painting really brought to life by great presentation and image making. You've got to work at both ;)
Intriguing! Can u tell us more?
Yes - you'll have to buy the next issue of the rejuvenated Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy to find out :D

It's true – anyone who's seen Captain Blood's stuff in the flesh knows that behind the trick photography, they actually look like the work of a six year old! lol
-
Oh wow, what great minis. And the paint job and basing. Only one word can dis crib them. Incredible ;D Crap now I'm going to have to get into yet another period. Thanks Captain. ;)
-
Just seen these again in Wargames Soldiers and Strategy. :-* :-* :-*
Our Captain is famous :D
Very nice article Richard.
It is only the second time I have bought the mag and I am really getting to like it.
I bought WI at the same time and it is no where near as good unless you the one or two subjects that fill the whole mag. Mr bibbly did have some pics in that but not a full 3 pages ;)
-
Thanks Colin :)
Yes, it's pretty much a retread of a thread I originally posted here, but it's nice to see it in print.
I have to agree with you, I think the new look WSS is one of the best wargaming mags I've seen. Certainly much more up my street than WI these days. I'm happy to contribute to such a well produced publication.
Tell you what, I'd bet that Guy Bowers, the editor, would kill for an article on making a zeppelin ;)

Did I? Bugger, I hate being away :)
And yes, I have to agree, it's certainly the best magazine for our hobby out there at the mo. It will be nice to see it go monthly :)
cheers
James

Some salute pictures. Very nice ones too. Yon can have my copy of WI if you want. Only filled with neopoleonic (spelling???) and FOE stuff. :-[

I would, but apparently "issue 55 out in WHSmiths from July 1st" doesn't apply to any of the branches round here. Northist bastards. >:(
All looking great anyway, Captain. I am as ever jealous of your output. :)
-
I bought that mag this month on a whim being bored of WI and my sub coming to an end.
Reading through I saw your article
just one word about it though
excellent :D
now stop poncing around with articles and do some more painting ;)

:o I got a name check.....I got a name check....I got a name check...... :D
And on a less hysterical note:
Excellent article Cap'n and thank you for the name check: you're a gennelman, that is for sure!
Bought the mag today and enjoyed it. It's a bit like LAF but in print. I shall be buying it again.
-
:o I got a name check.....I got a name check....I got a name check...... :D
Only fair really, since it was your ingenious idea Steve :)
I simply executed it with panache :D
I do agree, it's shaping into by far the best wargames magazine on the market. Mainly cos it's intimately concerned with wargaming, and not endless crappy recycled history articles. Nor is it blatantly plugging the products of a coterie of wargames manufacturers. Let's hope it carries on as it's begun it's renaissance...

So it finally seems like we have something like 'The Shitter' (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=20772.msg254586#msg254586)!
Also SI, don't let the name check go to your head. Happened to me, once, turned me to a complete asshole. Permanently. ;)

lol
I googled "Steve Marshall wargame" and 15 pages in the first result was a Steve Marshall that isn't me. :( Instant head deflation...........
:D
-
I've taken the plunge into this period. I've got my first box of these figures. Now let's hope my paint job will do justice to these superb models. Your my inspiration for this period Captain. Perhaps when I get some of them done I'll post some pictures. I can't hold a candle to Captain Blood. But I don't think my painting is to bad. We will see.
-
Looking forward to seeing them, Nighthawk. They are great figures and a lot of fun to put together and to paint :)
Enjoy!
-
Picked up the magazine, very well done. I do like the magazine, the articles are very easy reading and I would say outstrips WI now for variety and levity rather than 4-5 pages on one article and the obvious and understandible FOW plugging which does put me off a bit.
Guy has done a cracking job a have you.
You must put something together with your FIW and also your Border Reivers as the village is a sight to behold :-*
-
I also managed to finally pick up a copy. Well worth it. 8)
Your stuff looks great, and has made me think about making movement trays for my big block o'pike.
Will probably cheat and buy mine, though.

Come on, Rob. Trust me, they're easy to make. You just need a few of Mr Bibbly's magic rings... ;)

Just had another look at these and am struck by how goood the pike shafts are, really nicely done but I didn't really notice or appreciate this on tmy initial view because everything else is so stunning
Would you mind sharing the recipe for the wooden bits please Richard?
-
Hmm. As I recall, the pike shafts are Inscribe / Palmer craft acrylic burnt sienna, highlighted with various amounts of Vallejo bright orange and GW bleached bone mixed into the burnt sienna. Must admit, I usually paint wood grain on pole arm shafts, but these buggers are so long, I couldn't face it, so I just added highlights to the butts and selectively along the length of the shafts... Don't know why I went for a kind of redwood either really, because I usually paint wood a kind of natural pale yellowy brown. But not this time ::)

Any news on the Milanese?

Any news on the Milanese?
They are on the field of battle even now - in another place...
I'm sure they will be appearing here on LAF sooner than I would like... ::)
-
Oh,I don't know ;)
-
WOW!!!! I somehow missed these wonderful pictures…perfect as always and I like the composition of the colors. :-*
