Yet another Path to Glory
« on: January 07, 2014, 01:31:50 AM »
I've been a fan of the Path to Glory-style Chaos skirmish for a while, and still regularly go through the Realms of Chaos books. After finding an 'advanced' updated ruleset of the last Path to Glory rules GW published I rolled up a warband and managed to convince a few mates to join in.

This was what I ended up with -

Chaos Champion, no horse.
Table 1 (1), 3 Chaos Dwarves with shields and heavy armour (3)
Table 2 (2), 3 Flesh Hounds (5)
Table 1 (1), 2 Chaos Warriors with shields (3)
Table 1 (1), 2 Chaos Dwarf Beserkers with great weapon (3)
Table 2 (2), Minotaur with light armour and great weapon (5)
Table 1 (1), 5 Chaos Orcs with shields and heavy armour (4)

Champ advance - 5 (chaos reward), 5+(4) for Blessed with Juggernaut!
Based on that, the 2 pieces of equipment my champion gets are a lance and shield.

All 35 favour spent, not bad.

I spent a good chunk of yesterday (and the night before...) converting and putting together the warband. A whole single miniature has now been finished, so here this plog starts!

The first Chaos Dwarf Beserker -

A fairly boring shot of what's to come -

The normal dwarf warriors and orcs are likely to be much quicker than the first chap, since they're mostly armour. Not overly sure how I'm going to do the Jugger and Chaos armour...

What is this paths of glory that you speak of?
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Well the original was in the Realms of Chaos books, Slaves to Darkness and Lost and the Damned. GW did an updated ruleset a couple of Warhammer editions back actually called 'Path to Glory' when Chaos got released. A fan project updated it, made the hiring more complex and gave a load more options for what can be in the warband. The advanced one is here - http://home.arcor.de/pbhood/APG/Advanced%20Path%20to%20Glory%20V1.pdf

Hope that helps!

If the rest of the War Band turns out as WONDERFULLY as the first Vertically Challenged Evil Doer, you'l have something VERY special. The Evil Short One looks FANTASTIC; the flesh tones & the stubble are TERRIFIC. VERY WELL DONE!

A lot of Chaos goodness in your imaginative list. oxymoron

I have played Path to Glory. It was always a brutal path and it was rarely filled with glory, it was gory, but still I would play again. Only if I were taken hostage

I do truly enjoy your brush work.

Thanks for the peep.

Kudos!

Most people don't have a D5....silly idea to use that in the rules IMO :(

I guess I would just use D4+1

Or you could just use a D10 and halve the result... ;)

Great Dwarf by the way - I've also been rather interested in Path to Glory myself, but I found the basic game system (Warhammer) a bit dull, so I never got anywhere with it. But the idea of rolling up a random warband is still great!

Well Torben I distinctly remember my path to glory champion killing your path to glory champion.  :D

The dwarf rocks by the way. Looking forward to the rest of the warband.

I'm pretty sure that his death was due more to boredom than anything else ;)

Cheers for the comments everyone! It's all very enthusing!

I guess I would just use D4+1

Why not use a d6 and ignore the 6? Then you still get a variance of 1 to 5.

The 3 Chaos Dwarves are nearly done, just the 3 shields to go since they were left separate. Once they're done then a quarter of the warband is painted! Admittedly all of them are the smallest models, but still...

I really enjoyed Path to Glory! Played a whole campaign at my local GW (when I had a local GW!) and won some lovely prizes. Still have the stat sheets packed away somewhere.

Great painting! I'll be following this one...

Cheers! I still have a folder buried somewhere with all my game books with the GW rules pamphlet and my Nurgle warband, Onogal's Chosen. Luckiest warband I ever ran, champion got Daemonhood in the minimum 4 games. Made games somewhat funnier when you have a Daemon Prince leading something like 9 guys.

The three dwaffs are done. The shields are pretty bland to be honest, since I'll eventually paint stuff on the shields, probably as stuff happens to them or when a theme arises from the games I play.

Group shot thus far -

Just 1 more Beserker to go and all the Dwarves will be done. Unfortunately I need more primer, so can't do the orcs or hounds yet, but everything else is primed and ready to go. Pondering on what to paint next.

The Little Rogues look WONDERFUL! Your brushwork & bases are OUTSTANDING...VERY WELL DONE!

Pondering on what to paint next.

That was one thing that I always wondered about; i.e., how do you plan a War Band when everything is randomly generated (in a truly chaotic fashion)? I figured this was why speed painting was conceived.

I recently found the Path to glory booklet that was free with white dwarf and I have to admit i like the look of it ( I think papa Nurgle was trying to lure me in)

I prefer the more skirmish games that you can really go to town on your characters with, although even with larger forces i do come up with background material...... ::)

The only problem is, like my mordheim warband, it would mainly be to satisfy my enjoyment of making, painting and writing back story...
