Elizabethan Irish priests
« on: December 12, 2009, 04:39:59 PM »
Having just purchased a 16th century Irish command group, i am having trouble finding the colours for the priest figures. They are wearing a cloak with what looks like a fur collar. Any Ideas.  Thanks : ???

The traditional style of Irish dressing was prohibited in the 16th century AD under English sumptuary laws. The fringed cloak was particularly forbidden to wear as well as the wearing of trews or any saffron-colored garment. Saffron yellow was an important feature of Irish costume.

And, of course, the Ilbreachta law:

You could also do the priest in black. Some of the cloaks referred to above were fringed or trimmed in wolfskin or foxfur.
