Hello there, long time occasional browser of this fine forum. With my Colonial project finally taking off seamed a good time to join.
Been collecting the odd Darkest Africa mini over the past 10 years and after finding a copy of In the Heart of Africa in my local games store decided it about time I put them to use.
The first force I am building is a mob of Somalis using a mix of the Copplestone figures and converted Perry Ansar.
Heres my first batch of blokes straight from the painting table. My cameras a bit rubbish so the paint jobs dont show up to well.

This is the first of my converted up Perry plastics, added a greenstuff Somalis style fro and shield.

only another 50+ blokes to go :)

Thanks for the kind comments :)
Got a scout and some musketeers on there way next.
Soon my evil plan to convert my GW obsessed mates will be complete lol
-
Great idea using Perry Ansar.
Like them alot.
Welcome to the Forum.
-
Excellent work, welcome to the forum, and there's nothing evil about converting heathen GW'ers! ;)
-
Great conversion! Nice work. Welcome :)
-
Great miniatures.
Good skintones, excelent shield and clothes.
-
Nice painting - and welcome to the LAF
-
Good painting, impressive shading reminds me of flats somehow. Welcome.
-
Right on!
-
Thanks very much for the warm welcome :o
Managed to find the time today to paint up a Scout for my Somalis. Whent for a well traveled veteran warrior look for him to help stand out against the sparsely equipped rank&file.

Been thinking about building some scenery but am at a bit off a loss as were to start, does any one know of any useful sources of information on Somali buildings and settlements during the period?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Wow. He is excellent :-*
Is that another plastic conversion? If so, your styling of the hair is dead impressive.
-
Thanks :)
Aye he's another Perry plastic with added Greenstuff barnet.
I should image I will be quite the expert at modelling hairdos by the time I finish this project lol
-
Very nice work. I particularly like the scout. That is going to be an impressive-looking force when you are done.

Excellent work, I like your whites :-*
We sound like the WI in here sometimes ::)
-
Having just started some "standard" Perry ansar, I love your conversions.
-
Welcome to the forum.
Very nice paint job on those Somalis. Your conversions look really good. I have noticed that Copplestones do not make a command pack. Have you converted a figure to use a your armies leader yet?
-
I just used the standard parts from the Ansar box command sprue to make up a commander, wanted him to look a bit more fancy than the rank and file. Not sure how appropriate he is, images of Somali commander types a hard to find :(

[ahem]

Great work on that conversion.
Its so nice to see all that can be achieved with that box of plastics and some extra work.
Thanks for sharing.

Not to fear more pics on the way soon :D
Unfortunately a serious illness in the family's put a lot of things on the back burner, but my Somalis are slowly coming along.
-
They look great! I think the Ansar set is one of the most useful and versatile plastics sets available with many possibilities from ancients to the early 20th century. I'm converting some for 16th century Kongo and they are perfect for the project.

Nicely done :)
