New 40mm AWI project.
« on: December 31, 2023, 10:09:33 AM »
For 2024, my new project is 40mm AWI. I won't necessarily be concentrating on any particular theater, but just some generic units to get onto the table at first.

First up is finishing off what already have underway,  then sorting out stuff I haven't started, but also working on my own range of miniatures - starting with some marching at trail.

Photos below include some british lights, 15th regiment with 6 figures to do (Triguard), just started 33rd (Triguard), British command base (Triguard), 1st Maryland (Front Rank), command base (Froht Rank), undecided rebel regiment (Sash and Saber ebay bargain), 9th regiment in Saratoga uniform ( masters of my own figures - the yellow facings are a bit too yellow).

Nice work 👍

I have played in a lot of 40mm games using the Carnage & Glory rules at Historicon, it is amazing how quickly the seem to be ‘normal’ sized figures.

Fabulous stuff are the bottom figures at trail the ones you have sculpted yourself? They look great.

I'd love claim the credit for sculpting them, but I had someone who knows what they are doing sculpt them. If left to me to do they would never get started.

They are in cut down uniforms, with head options. First up will be at trail, with a choice of saratoga or uncocked hats, then marching with same choice of heads, then highlanders, then onto the rebels.

Producing figures is a slow process, but I should have the first wave in production by April. Then the second a few months later. I'm not looking to change the world, but just produce figures I want to have. If other people want them too, that helps to pay for more.

Looking great so far. I will be following with interest as I am contemplating a 40mm AWI project of my own.

What's your basing sizes if I may ask..?

Base sizes for Infantry are 60mm frontage and 50mm deep. This seems to work as Front Rank and Triguard figures are quite big, my own range is a bit inbetween these, and Sash and Saber, which are quite slight. I use the same bases for Napoleonics, but with 50mm frontage and 60mm depth. I'm aiming to adapt the Fife and Drum AWI rules for 40mm figures as they are just 1 side of A4 and look nice and simple.

Once the weather warms up a bit i'm going to have a play through with some War of 1812 figures to get the hang of how they work and the adjustments needed for 40s.

Wow! This scale seems like it would be much easier to paint with my 68 year old MK1 eyeballs!

Thanks for the positive support so far.

Some progress with my figures, most of 20th foot done (I wrong lyrics said 9th in my first post). One more base of 6 figures to finish then bases need completing. The yellow is a bit too yellow but I can  live with it. A bit of an experiment with the officer and drummer on a small base at the back.of the unit. I quite like it..

Masters are going off for production moulding this week.
