Welcome to the LAF Modern Fantasy Painting Party. This follows on from the Old School Fantasy Painting Party. The idea of the painting clubs is for LAF members to populate a club with 100 newly painted miniatures, one miniature at a time, following the theme in question.
Fantasy is a hugely popular miniatures genre and the Old School Fantasy Painting Party filled up quickly, which is why we split the club into pre-2000 'Old School' figures and 2000 and beyond figures. This will be the 2000 and beyond figure painting party.
We recognise that there may be a grey area where people aren't entirely sure which side of 2000 a figure belongs to, but as long as people are posting in the spirit of the party, we accept that the odd figure may not technically be in the right place!
The usual Painting Club rules apply:
- Any LAF member can take part.
- You take part by posting in this thread, a picture of a single newly painted miniature that fits the theme.
- You can only post one entry within a 24-hour period.
- You can contribute as many miniatures as you like while the painting club is running. But you can’t post more than one per day.
- The subject of your picture must be a single, fully painted and based miniature.
- It can be whatever scale you like up to 40mm.
- It can be a figure on foot, a mounted figure, or a piece of equipment – a cannon or siege piece, for example.
- You can show your miniature on its own, or in a scenic setting.
- The picture can be a single shot of the miniature, or a composite of different views.
- Photoshop manipulation of the image (except for colour / brightness / contrast correction) is not allowed.
- Your picture should be a maximum size of 1000px x 1000px
- The miniature should be newly-painted for the club and not have been previously shown here or elsewhere on the internet.
If participants submit old stuff, that submission will be disqualified and removed.
If you submit more than one miniature in any one day, or multiple miniatures within a picture, that submission will be disqualified and removed.
You can upload the image using the LAF attachment function, or upload it to an image hosting service and link to here.
When you post a picture, please check the number of the entry before yours and then number your entry accordingly.
It would be great if you could title your entry too and perhaps provide some information about the figure such as the manufacturer and / or sculptor if known.
Given the current 'stay at home' situation the club will stay open until 200 contributions have been posted. Then the club is complete.
When you post a picture, you become a member of the club and may add this splendid painting party badge - designed by Westphalia Chris, to your forum signature line.

No. 1 Stone Elemental
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/4811-020520184042.jpeg)
Technically it's a 'Large Earth Elemental' from Reaper Miniatures' Bones range sculpted by Kevin Williams. Bones can get bad press, but it's a lovely figure and a pleasure to paint.
-
Nice start!
-
No. 2: The Dark Lord Sauron
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1352-020520194818.jpeg)
I finished him just recently - to lead one of my Dragon Rampant armies.
-
No. 3 - Shadow Knight
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/4060-040520025403.jpeg)
Shadow Knight from Northstar, 'Rangers of Shadow Deep' range.
-
Excellent entries.
-
A solid start 8)
I've got a couple of Riders of Rohan on the go that I hope to have done soon.
-
No.4 Greatsword Champion
Pretty sure he squeezes in? I bought him in 02 anyway :-)
-
Lovely stuff! I especially like the Shadow Knight and Champion, Dr. Matt and Keith!
-
Some fantastic entries, gents! Will start painting soon ... :)

I really like the grass and extra texture on that, good idea.

No. 5 - Otherworld Miniatures - A thief, skulking around the back of the inn, looking for an easy victim!
-
That thief is a great figure :)
Lovely stuff! I especially like the Shadow Knight and Champion, Dr. Matt and Keith!
Absolutely. Love those. Brilliant job.
-
That thief is a great figure
Yes, he is, isn't he. Loads of detail on there, you can't see it all but he has a knife in his boot and a grappling hook on the end of his rope.
-
Just discovered this. Some great entries already. Will try and get one done myself. ::)
-
Lovely entries from everyone, well done.
-
No. 6 - Reaper Bones Manticore
One of the more recent bones figures I believe. A fairly quick paint job with contrast paint + highlights - will do nicely for D&D games!
-
Brilliant work everyone :)
-
Great entries so far. Always in interesting collection of figures I have never seen before in these clubs. The bones Manticore turned out great. Contrast paints on that big of a model are a good idea.
-
No. 7 Eureka Barbarian
(https://myalbum.com/photo/EVYrCrhhR39Y/540.jpg)
-
More goodness - particularly keen on that Barbarian. Lovely stuff!
-

+1
What a great figure, Guy. Lovely job. That face :-*
-
That's a top-notch job and no mistake. But I do worry about that sword. I hope it's made of Styrofoam, or he's going to have a tiring time hitting anybody with it. :)
-
Haha, indeed Plyknes, though he does look like he could use it. And thanks fellas, Nic gave him to me as a freebie at CANCON (Australian Convention). His face is particularly good ,despite the sword, very characterful :)
-
Latest entries are lovely... :)
-
No.8 - Bear's Head Manticore
Recent model (2020 I think!), old school feel. Painted yesterday, mostly contrast paints again. They've increased my output drastically! I can't get results as good as some of the stunning entries on this thread so far, but as they say, done is better than perfect :) No that's not right lol Done is better than theoretical and perfect!
Yes this makes two manticores done in the space of a couple of days. I just loved both of them when I saw them. What's next now I've run out of manticores?!

No. 9: Rollo Iron Head, Mierce miniatures norse faction
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/93-070520171844.jpeg)
It's amazing what intricate detail modern sculptors manage to get onto their sculpts, perhaps they work with a microscope ... painting won't get easier anyway. But I like that character's face and stance, and at least he looks like he definitely will be able to swing that hammer! ;)
-
I am really enjoying this thread - especially Rollo's trousers! I will try and do something to contribute, although I am nervous about inevitably dragging down the average standard. Great work everyone!
-
No. 9: Rollo Iron Head, Mierce miniatures norse faction
:o
That's just brilliant!
-
No. 9: Rollo Iron Head, Mierce miniatures norse faction
Nice work on that 75mm figure.
(I'm going to keep on pretending it is 75mm ;)
-
Wow! Wonderful Michael.
-
That is an impressive Norseman. Impressively sculpted and painted.
-
A masterpiece Michael - of course! Superb painting.
Lovely to see you back again :)
I like that manticore too. What a dynamic model.
-
No.10.
One of the recent Partworks ghosties, hope this qualifies :)
-
A nice ghostie :) I like those models quite a bit, good job on it too.

Nice contract on that one!
No. 12 Ent from Games Workshop, painted for my next Blood Bowl team.
I love the look of that Ent, the leafing out effect is great.
-
That ent entry looks great.
-
Brilliant stuff chaps, that Ent is great!
-
That Ent is great. I want one!
No 13. Reaper Bones Wyvern.
Like others, quick PJ with some GW contrast paints. Really hard to take a photo of as the nexk is at a very weird angle.

-
Great to see more lovely entries! I have both of those last two in my painting queue lol I shan't attempt to duplicate these lovely results though.
I thought that wyvern had an odd neck angle too and have been considering reposing it.
-

No. 3 - Shadow Knight
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/4060-040520025403.jpeg)
Shadow Knight from Northstar, 'Rangers of Shadow Deep' range.
Nice’n. I am struggling a bit with my current project to use colors for liveries but toned down a couple of notches. This is a good reference for yellow.
-

Thanks :) You might try adding a touch of the complementary color to desaturate your colors a bit if you find them too bright. I used GW Sepia wash for overall depth, some Agrax Earthshade here and there, and highlighted with a vallejo bone or ivory color. Yellow is a challenge as all painters know :)
-
Very nice entries - well done!
No. 15 - The Masque of Slaanesh
A daemon-dancer in the warhammer age of sigmar range. It's plastic and I painted it using a mix of citadel and reaper paints.
-
Very nice work, all around. I think I have a couple of minis in the pipeline that should fit in here, so back to the pain(t)station! :)
-

Lovely entries here! Great painting on "Masque of Slaanesh" and the "Old school bugbear" ...
-
Great entries all round. That bugbear is a cracking little figure.

"modern fantasy" makes me think of neon-lit vampires or the kind of books with steely eyed male models (or just their steely ab'ed torsos) on the cover featuring stories about werewolves that happen to be both sensitive lovers and single, a perfect catch for the female perspective character.
I am happy to see that is not at all what this paint club is about :D
So here is a thoroughly modern fantasy mini:
Artakl, Ghekkotah Clutch Warden
(https://maledrakh.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/200511-mantic-kings-of-war-forces-of-nature-artakl-ghekkotah-clutch-warrior-5.jpg)
cast in resin by Mantic for the Kings of War summer campaign (was it last year or the year before? Even earlier? 2017! How time flies.) I would wager a pretty penny that it also is a sculpted digitally.
-
#20 Amazon Warrior
I'll add something to the thread. The miniature is a 32mm Amazon warrior from Bronze Age Miniatures. They're quite fun models to paint. I've got a couple other fantasy miniatures on my desk so I might just sneak in another model before the thread closes. Everything posted so far looks great and I'm excited to see what else is contributed.

I'm glad we went with 200 this time, otherwise we would already be a fifth of the way through the club.

Definitely a good decision given the lockdown!
Good to see more great additions. Especially nice to see some relatively 'obscure' minis like that bugbear (which is somewhere in my lead pile too).
-
No. 21 - Bronze Age Minis rogue
This is sold as a mercenary captain but I painted her up last night to represent my half-elf rogue, while playing her in our Roll20 D&D Ravenloft campaign. Much as I prefer face-to-face, there are advantages to playing remotely!
The 'captain' theme does work somewhat given the character, Evini, aspires to be a pirate captain.

Great entries so far 👍

Not completely sure what happened to the feet :(
Cunning halfperson Camouflage! ;-) The rest of him looks great!
Also holy crap this thread has some amazing looking minis and paint-job. Ent made me laugh, imagining him standing around on the pitch, with a bunch of little guys running about, wondering what all the fuss is about and what the hell he's doing here?

#27: One of the nastier barbarians from the boardgame HATE. I got the game relatively cheaply, and though I may never play it (it does look neat!), I love the minis. They're surprisingly good for a boardgame! And this guy is just... Grim.
(Grrr. Any idea why he's appearing sideways? He's not sideways on my desktop)
-
Every day this thread has more unique and well painted miniatures. Excellent work.
No sooner have you said this, than the next figure posted is a garden gnome standard bearer!
More excellent figures, really enjoying all the contributions here. I loved the old school party and this is just as enjoyable.

#31 Wizard
Originally sold by Statuesque Miniatures, always thought this would make an awesome Gandalf, though I kind of made him a bit evil looking by giving him a purple cloak and very shaded eyes

Any idea why he's appearing sideways?
Most likely the exif data has been removed from the picture wherever you uploaded it. Exif contains stuff like image orientation, among other things.

Lovely work Peder.

Suitably brutal and brutish looking :-*
Thank you, compadres. This plastic kistbash craft is very rewarding. I re-engineered the mace after your input on the 'raw' model, Richard. I am nota fan of overlarge weapons. I think it looks more realistic like this. Probably still a bastard to wield but I bulked out the torso of this henchman to make him look able to wield it from horseback. I think the steelm parts look to bright, I will probably stain it a bit more and add som subtle splatters.
Anyway, todays miniature...

#36 – Halfling Landsknecht (Westfalia)
Only noticed the other day this club's running. Literally fantastic entries rolling in quickly! So today it's been now or never for me. This tiny chap came in handy. I mean really tiny; he's slightly taller than the diameter of his 20mm base. Even had time left to add a rooster (by Warlord), just for fun.
Still struggling with my photo setup, so colours are somewhat off, but close enough.
-
super work on that halfling.
wonderful thread.

Have had this in the pile for awhile so thanks for giving me a good reason to get it done. I did use basing material to help him stand more erect because he had a tendency to fold on the thin legs because of the weight of the upper body. Hope you all like him. :)

#38 Oathsworn - Female Tiefling Paladin

Then there's mine.
Well it's good enough for me :)

#39 GW Dreadfleet Dead ship thing

But possibly my favourite, if pointless, fantasy miniature of recent yrs
So an excuse to finally paint it up

Just got back into the hobby after a long break (the ending of WHFB really took the wind out my sails). Realised there's far nicer companies than GW in this hobby so have recently dusted off my old paints and got right into Frostgrave. Here's a wizard's apprentice I just painted.

This miniature is from the Medieval Demon range from Antediluvian Miniatures. I hope he qualifies - please let me know if he doesn't.
-
I'd say the demon absolutely fine. Great work LAFers.
-
The demon is superb, , its a modern miniature based on very old inspirations ( as in medieval ideas and folklore) but its still a modern piece.
its a great contribution, well done, and perfectly fit for being included here.
-
Very interesting demon. Nice work.

61 Wizard Oathmark
I like the different blues on the Wizard, duhamel, and also think you have just shown me the Wizard that I have been looking for.
;)
-
Lots of excellent entries so far!
Question for the group:
Provided I can finish it in time, would it be ok to post a figure that I sculpted and printed myself? Just wondering because I have a few on the go that fit the theme, but aren't technically manufactured.
No guarantees I will finish a sculpt, get a good print, and paint it in time; but I'd like to know nonetheless.
-
Well if you made it yourself now, rather than before 2000 (don't recall there being many 3D printers around back then), I can't see how it doesn't qualify as a modern fantasy figure.
I think (though I do not speak in any official capacity) any objections would be churlish. I say go for it!

This 25mm miniature is from Ground Zero Games.Comes with a 'dungeon floor' pattern on the hexagonal base so I stuck it on a washer and carved the stone floor in greenstuff.
I've painted this miniature a few times as a Conan marker for 'Age of Conan' boardgame, this is its first time in black and white.
Warpaint inspired by the silver screen.

Just a bit of silly fun. I had this guy in my lead mountain for ages but this painting club gave me the impetus to get him painted. After doing two of these in fleshtones I knew the next one would be the 'zebra cam' - ideal when trying to infiltrate a cult.

It's a metal miniatures so I'm guessing it's not from the Zombicide stable. Not a bad one for a Prince of the Dragon type of chap.

No.76 - Oathbreaker (Dead of Dunharrow) GW Plastic
'The hour is come at last. Now I go to Pelargir upon Anduin, and ye shall come after me. And when all this land is clean of the servants of Sauron, I will hold the oath fulfilled, and ye shall have peace and depart for ever. For I am Elessar, Isildur's heir of Gondor.'
'Strange and wonderful I thought it that the designs of Mordor should be overthrown by such wraiths of fear and darkness. With its own weapons was it worsted!'
Well, I did it. The first figure I have managed to paint since my medical catastrophe of October 2018. It has been a difficult road, I can tell you. Not especially pleased with how it turned out, but there was a point when I thought I would never be able to paint again. Don't expect I shall ever again reach the heights of my LPL glory days, but it's a start and that is good enough. I'm back! A proper LAFer once more. :)
-
For your first miniature in almost two years, let alone after physical issues... looks pretty good! Welcome back.

Huzzah! Well done Dylan. Great news, and a very strong paint job on a very nice model :-*

Sculpted by the Amazing Kieran Billings, he's so awesome. What a great guy (don't tell him but I'm sleeping with his wife, I think he might be on to me).
Based on a 50mm base.
Love that dead of Dunharrow model. Excellent paint job to match!

Well, that's a brilliant thing to see on a rainy Tuesday. He looks great Dylan and nice to see one of these looking a bit more grounded rather than all blue-green.
Yes, I was never all that keen on Peter Jackson's lurid green tidal wave of ghosts. A tad over the top, visually, for my money. They really are lovely figures, but you have to look past the disgusting sickly colours on the pictures on the box. I bought them to use as Norse Draugr, or wights, or something like that for Of Gods and Mortals, so I wanted them looking a little less ethereal.
Thanks for the comments, guys. This really has been a big deal for me. I feel emotional about it out of all proportion to the scale of the achievement (hehe, painting one damn figure lol).
Nice spider, beefcake! I hope my mother does not see that, she'll have a conniption, and I'll get an email saying "Dylan! There's a spider on the internet! Can you come and put it outside for me?" Luckily I don't think she browses LAF all that much.
-
Well, that's a brilliant thing to see on a rainy Tuesday. He looks great Dylan and nice to see one of these looking a bit more grounded rather than all blue-green.

Last one of the Fenodyree. This one shows the eyes nice and clearly, which I tried to paint with the disturbing horizontal pupils that goats have. All the models have the same eyes, but they're not easy to see on the photos.

Unfortunately I do not know who makes this figure, but I'm sure one of you does! I am assuming it is post-2000, if not, please delete, thanks.

lol, another northstar mini. Frostgrave Wraith. Very well done by the way!

Thanks, beefcake. :)

:o :o :o
That Ranger looks just Sean Bean as Boromir!
:-* :-*
I bet he always dies when he plays. ;D

#91 - Frostgrave Tracker - Northstar

Lovely. Some of those Frostgrave minis really are little gems.
I've never actually played Frostgrave, but I have been tempted by some of the figures.
-

At the end of the first game, at least!
;)
Lovely. Some of those Frostgrave minis really are little gems.
Indeed there are some lovely offerings in there, as well as in the Oathmark range
It is also good to see them in alternate paint schemes too, as the human Oathmark wizard posted earlier in the thread is exactly what I am looking for and had not realised in his 'official' kit. A good few Frostgrave wizards are on my 'to get' list too.
;)
Thanks to this Painting Party for showing me a good few things that I was previously oblivious too.
:D
-
OOOPS! As you were! This one has already been on my blog,I have withdrawn it

Me too.
Nice work on those last couple of entries.

here's another one. Dark Sword miniature Male Elf Ranger
Hi, is this intended as an entry? If so, I will number it.

I have realised that its been in my blog , so I've taken it down, oops , sorry and that :(

No bother, you'll just have to get another one painted up!

#92 - The Witch-King of Angmar (or at least that's what he'll be in a forthcoming game).
Again I'm afraid, I do not know the manufacturer and I do hope it's post-2000?

A 3D print from Etsy - I'm not sure of the shop, but it was a very nice print (far nicer than most other 3D stuff I've seen ordered by my friends). There are several sellers on Etsy for the same sculpt, I think mine was ARC3DCreations or some such.
-
Cool Troll, very distinctive paintjob! Definitely something radioactive in that river.

Cheers, Despite selling my own 3d files I still can't be really be bothered with printed minis, I think because I prefer metal so much, lol.
-
Great stuff in these recent entries - lovely work on the minotaur and centaur!
Here's #98 - a Reaper Bones undead ogre masquerading as a Hra from Tekumel:
-
Excellent, the mottled skin, and weathered blades are :-*
-
Oh lordy .... the centaur, the troll, the undead ogre ... it's all too much for me.
-
Cheers, Despite selling my own 3d files I still can't be really be bothered with printed minis, I think because I prefer metal so much, lol.
Yep, this was my first purchased 3D mini...and only because almost no one makes a good Centaur outside of random 3D prints!
PS: That undead Ogre is friggin' amazing...

I hear you on that. I like the Heresy centaur and the rackham character one but a lot of other centaurs look like kitbashes. I think the rearing up pose really makes them look a whole lot better.

I've corrected the number.
Thank you.
Yes, great work everyone.
Lots of eye candy and very inspirational to get the fantasy paint blood flowing!
-
Half way there. I'm glad we made it 200 as there are some great figures appearing.
-
Lots of different yet great skin tones on the last few entries. Fantastic variety in this club.
-
#101: Thunru'u
-
Lovely work in this thread - a real pleasure to browse. So here, in a spirit of solidarity rather than emulation, is something from me (also a good excuse to paint a figure I've had for a while).
#102, Nightfolk sentinel (from Northumbrian Tin Soldier):

Hobgoblin: What a bizarre, angry-looking... um... thing! I love it! :)
Severian: Cool! He reminds me of something out of Labyrinth. I loved all those weird little goblin-things in that film.
-
Nice job, reminds of the goblins from Labyrinth.
{edit} ah Plynkes beat me to it lol

#106 - Orc
I've been digging in the endless GW LOTR box :)
-
Oh I like that....excellent paint job and a mini I’ve not seen before.
Pardon my ignorance, but is it metal/plastic...part of a set etc?
I can see that being used for settings other than LOTR
:)
-
Cheers.
He's metal and I think from some of the earlier releases (around 'Two Towers' film). I seem to have a few variations based on this pose too so looks like he was used as a dolly for several Orc captains.
-
Cheers...off to go and look for one... :)
-
That's fantastic, Keith. Oh wait, that wasn't meant to be a pun or anything. :)

That's a beauty Keith :-*

Hang on a minute, do you suppose that she's doing it on purpose? ;)

You have an interesting point there Dylan. I hadn’t thought of that...
Super job all round, and the face and hair are especially good. You’re back in the groove my man 8)

No. 112 Barbarian Elder
(https://i.imgur.com/Cjut0XU.jpg?1)
The casting is by Bronze Age Miniatures - they do a very characterful range of barbarians
-
Been a while since I contributed! Got a new camera... all good except now I can see all the tiny details lol
A quick experiment with contrast paint and drybrush on a ghost from a Midlam kickstarter (I think!). Fairly pleased for a very quick paint job.
-
Brilliant additions all round.

Note to self: Stop looking at this thread and finding things that you did not know existed that you now feel that you 'need'....

Lovely!
No. 110 The Witch
from the Blood Rage game box
I'm a bit curious about this one. I have the Blood Rage game, but that figure didn't come with it. There was a witch-type figure, but she is much more of a Raquel Welch-in-a-fur-bikini kind of thing (I'm thinking of painting her up for the club, as it happens). Are there different editions with different figures or something? Or maybe it's from one of the expansions?
-

Dylan, it's from the add-on box "Mystics of Midgard" containing five shaman-like types to add to the clans. Each figure included 2 times. As I don't play the game (just wanted the minis to heap to the pile ... ;D) I could send you a set, if you want ...

I love that monk so much I've just gone and bought one haha awesome paint job!

That's very kind of you. I fear I must gratefully decline, though. I have far too much stuff to paint as it is, and I'm trying to be a little more disciplined about adding to the lead pile these days. Many thanks for the offer all the same.

#117 Oathmark plastic human
(https://i.imgur.com/10eHvaZ.png)
Norbert here is a plastic Oathmark soldier.
He would clearly rather be at home with a pie and a pint.
Potato-cam has messed with his left eye - its a bit clearer irl.
Amazing cavalcade of mini's in this thread (and so many other!), hope I'm not lowering the tone too far!
Anyway, long past time I de-lurked and said hi - hi!
-
He certainly looks like a Norbert! :)
Or maybe a medieval Dick Strawbridge...
-
Or maybe a medieval Dick Strawbridge...
Haha, yes! That ‘tache - crazy. How does the man eat? lol
Lovely additions. The monk is such a great, characterful figure too, and the griffon is sumptuous :-*

It is a very cool minotaur

122. Ring wraith
I usually add more contrast to my bases, but wanted to keep the dead and blasted looking ground of Mordor. Excuse giant thumb... I have no photo booth.
Edit: Ok, now I just need to get a photo booth... and a sense at how to format my photos!

It's on a 2p. It'll be used for 28mm as a dryad or similar and in 10mm as a treeman.

Nice idea with Ents, mate.
Very effective too.

Who knew that Ents were so fashion conscious and moved with the seasonal trends?
Winter next? :D
Winter is coming!

Some more good entries since last I looked. The Ents are particularly impressive.

I had forgotten about this thread...I'll have to remedy that shortly. I've just been doing batches of minions lately.

Technically a sci fi miniature but I've painted it to fit Fantasy. Fire elemental PJ, washed out photo due to crappy phone.

130. Reaper Bones - Skeletal Minotaur
Inspired by the Minotaurs on show a few weeks ago I dragged this guy out and finally got him painted and based.
(http://i.imgur.com/Qhm2WKj.jpg?1) (https://imgur.com/Qhm2WKj)
More mold lines on him than I expected but not a bad sculpt otherwise. The skull on the base is from Hammerlot.
Update: Added a shot of the miniature's rear below:
(http://i.imgur.com/xirngh0.jpg?1) (https://imgur.com/xirngh0)

I have that same undead minotaur. I also like the fire elemental and think it works well as a Fantasy figure.

Great to see this thread moving forwards again. It had stalled a little until recently. Just hope that it doesn't start moving too quickly, as I have a couple more I'd like to squeeze in before the end.

Some cracking new entries!

132: Hill Giant, by Conquest Games
Please excuse the multiple angle photos, hopefully that's allowed (I don't know how to incorporate them into a single photo and I thought the miniature is best enjoyed from different angles). He's a new release, possibly not even on their website yet, and another great addition to Conquest's 'Myths of Albion' range.

The the painting club rules have always been no more than one mini a day, Cubs. Don't think they've ever said anything about multiple photos of the same mini. :)
Super smashing great lovely, as Jim Bowen probably never actually said.
-
Noice, Cubs! (said in the same tone as 'bowled, Garry')
-
lol lol lol
Don't think many LAFers will get that reference. :)
Noice Gaaaaarrrreeeee!
-
Was there a self propelled gun involved? Then I do, very popular with the wife and I. :)
-
Super job on the giant Cubs. A proper dirty, ugly bastard :-*
-
Was there a self propelled gun involved? Then I do, very popular with the wife and I. :)
Um, dunno. Not to my knowledge, unless the boys Down Under are in the habit of referring to off-spinners as self-propelled guns (I think that would be more apt for a pace bowler). But then you know how memes and such can mutate, and being many thousands of miles from Australia I'm not exactly near the epicentre of it. :)
-
Cracking giant. No problem with the extra photos at all!
-
133. D&D Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures Rust Monster
-
Oooh!
He is great, mate!
:-* :-*
He would make a great crittur for so many settings.
Gonna check that out.
Thanks for posting him.
:D
-
Cheers. They come two to a pack. They're surprisingly awkward to paint.
-
Looks brill 8)
-
Ah, the infamous rust monster! Good to see them get a modern remake.
-
Very cool. Love that hill giant. Might need to get that one. The rust monster is perfect too!
Edit, not available yet. Do you do the images for their site? I might need to pick up a few of their giants, what material are they?

The guy who runs Conquest Games likes to use my photos on his site because he likes them! I'm cool with that. They're all metal, so maybe ask him when this one is available, he may literally just be waiting to update the shop with the photo I sent.
-
Cool. Well they are nice photos. Super happy it is metal, I probably would have passed in resin. :) I'll give him a message, thanks.

Our Garry commands no tanks, other than the water tanks he had the run of when he was a groundsman. ;) No cricket references then, which is a shame (so I won't make any reference to the launch of SW23) but am looking forward to the first net session of the season tomorrow.
Anyway, enjoying the 'slow burn' aspect to this painting club and getting back into painting a bit now the weather has warmed up and it's staying lighter for longer in the afternoon - roll on daylight savings!

Cool - maybe take a snap and post him to the thread, they're really characterful miniatures, aren't they?
I'm just down the road in the Bush Capital. I'd say maybe we could catch up at Cancon but that's been cancelled for 2021... :(

#136: Storm Giant
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/48/1352-031020063036.jpeg)
He's a 3D resin print - and I swear the sculptor was trying to make Gandalf have the body of Kevin Sorbo.
-
Nice entries. I've not seen that Hawkmoon figure before, I really like the style and the paintjob has brought that out nicely.
I can see exactly what you mean with steroid Gandalf!
-
Noice, Muzfish!
Bah! I say more cricket references, until the rest of LAF are so sick of them that they kick the pair of us out.
Of course, being southern hemisphere your season is just getting going, forgot about that. Ours is just about winding down. We aren't usually still playing in October up here, but the Covid delayed everything. It's the county T20 finals this weekend, but the forecast is so bad it may well be decided by a bowl-off against a single stump. Not exactly the most riveting form of cricket. Don't think it will replace T20 as the short form of the game just yet.
I'd like to see French cricket tried out as the new razzmatazz TV version of the sport for people with short attention spans like me. Can you have a word with whoever is in charge of the Big Bash about that for me?
Loving Gandalf Sorbo! lol
-
(so I won't make any reference to the launch of SW23)
I just googled that. I had no idea. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. I hope it is available here, I have been looking for something to replace the Peter Andre cologne that I usually wear. lol
-
137. Cockatrice from Massive Darkness, though I seem to recall they reference to it as a cockatrix?
Not the easiest thing to paint as it's quite 'flat' in a lot of respects.
-
Great model, great painjob.

Another cracker, mate!

Be a good chap now and stop posting brilliant candidates for the Menagerie...

As in "what do you get if you cross a cock and a dominatrix?" :)
Nice job on a nice model.

lol
I thought the trix part was a reference to doing the "tying it up like a pretzel trick"

As in "what do you get if you cross a cock and a dominatrix?" :)
Nice job on a nice model.
Thanks, though I definitely don't want to see a sculpt of that! lol

139. Heresy Miniatures Hellbeast
-
"Are you the gatekeeper?"
Great Hellbeast!
-
Thanks Cubs. It's a very nice miniature to paint up. Funnily enough I have a pair of them. I've just undercoated the second one.
-
He's on fire!

I've got a conveyor belt of monsters on the go. I've just found an owlbear and peryton I'd forgotten I had.

I am enjoying all the entries here, plenty of fantastic beasts!
Blackwolf that cavalryman is nicely done, and the horns on the horse are intriguing. Reminds me a bit of Princess Mononoke.
-
141. Reaper Miniatures Stone Golem

more lovely additions. I've got a bunch of the hellbeasts too that I need to get into.

Thanks all :)
That chariot is excellent mate!

143. Reaper Miniatures great worm
I definitely wasn't painting this one pink or purple.
-
Awesome stuff Steve. I've got a couple of these to paint as well. I've always thought that they are a little small for a 'purple' worm.
-
Cheers Andy. There's 57 spots left for you to get some more in!

146: Nagash, Supreme Lord of the Undead
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/48/1352-111020142437.jpeg)
I built him a couple of years ago, airbrushed the main colors on, and never finished him until yesterday. A challenge to myself right now is trying finish projects, and not start any new ones.
-
Wowzers, that's a hell of a project!

Undead Unicorn from Bear's Head Miniatures.
This is the metal version off a kickstarter some years ago, currently available in Resin from bearsheadminis.com

Cool. Love the rainbow mane. I've got that one to be painted from the kickstarter also. Glad I got the metal :)

lol

That unicorn! :o

That's really cool. That hand would be great on it's own as a spell effect too.

More great stuff, love the dog. The PJ on that cloud hand looks great.

153. Goblin spearman from the Artizan Designs Borderlands range.
-
154. Isharann Soulrender (Games Workshop)
A birthday present from a friend this is a really impressive sculpt, intricate and dynamic, although I swapped the enormous serrated shepherd's crook thing he was carrying for something a bit more businesslike. As you hopefully might be able to tell I was attempting to capture something of the look that Blasphemia Blackwood (who posts on this forum) gives her astounding AOS miniatures.

-
Oooh, now that's damn good.
-
Nice! It did remind me of Blasphemia Blackwood's work, which is a huge compliment.
-
Thanks Cubs, that means a lot coming from you *blushes*.
And yes, Elk101 that is indeed a compliment. I read her tutorials and consciously tried to follow parts of her method, but I could not help but think that her application of highlights would be more sparing and her use of shadows more, well... artistic. And I was not brave enough (this time) to try her paint flicking technique on an otherwise finished miniature!
-
That is cracking!
Love that grimy, Dark Age of Sigmar' look!

156. Ork mounted on Wereboar
“New school” Reaper bones wereboar, with Gw Ork rider. A GS fur saddle cloth added so rider would fit, and added a few bits to hang off . Banner/standard was missing, so I sculpted a stone spearhead.

Thanks guys. It was an inspired find/guess/trial. I’m happy with how it turned out. The rider is a big 28mm - that helps because the boar is huge. Will need to put together a few more for my Saga forces. Base is completed, but no pics as this guy is packed away for a bit.

#160 Big Boris Mk2
(https://i.imgur.com/SWldLbh.jpg)
Mini by Heresy
I've had this mini for a long time and was intimidated by all the parts, but this spring I started painting vikings/barbarians and Boris called out to me from the lead pile. So he made it to the work bench and sat. Then this fall I got the bug to work on him again and out came the pin vice and glue, and paint.
ps Happy Halloween!

great sculpt that - although she's 'big'.
you've gone for a much more subtle paint scheme on her that I did - I like it.

Nice job, Elbows, full of character.

great sculpt that - although she's 'big'.
How 'big' is she?
I may have a use for her.
What is the base size?
:)
-
The base is 25mm. She's a Reaper Mini and she's in line with those miniatures - so she's probably big when compared to more "proper" 25mm minis. She is levitating, so that probably doesn't help. :D

Elbows, those are both fantastic! I might just have to pick those up from Reaper.... They look great!
-
Thanks, yeah they're both great minis - super easy to paint. I'm a "paint in the lines" type of guy. If a mini doesn't have crisp, easily visible lines...I struggle. All of the minis I did on this page were super easy to paint.
-
Elbows, you are on a roll! They’re all great, but I particularly like Rivani.

Man...I think I broke the thread. :'(

Your just too good an act to follow :D

Guess I'll have to prime a few more minis then... lol

Thank you very much for the kind words. Your chap really does have it all going on in the Horn Department.
I must say I'm really enjoying this LP Painting Club and am getting miniatures finished that otherwise would have languished for years. I recently received my Forge of Ice KickStarter and will try to get one or two finished for inclusion here if I get the opportunity.

Another thoroughly modern fantasy mini:
No. 177 This is the Blight Dragon, or Blighter as I like to call it. (Would "Old Blightey" be taking it too far?).
The Blighter was 3D printed in a single piece on my Elegoo Mars Pro.
I made the base on another kind of printer.
I was given the .stl-file as an out-of-the-blue freebie at the very end of delivery of all the rewards from the first Lost Adventures kickstarter campaign. It was originally from the Lost Dragons KS. It is currently available to buy from the lost adventures website.

Muzfish4, I wholeheartedly agree!
Love the bronze age lass, especially her tattoo.
Bronze Age's minis rock.
Maledrakh, That dragon looks icky and great!
Such a clean 3d print. I never would have guessed.
Misneach, Great job on the spriggan. The colors really pop!

Another 3D-print, the Ancient Treeman from Cast'N'Play.
Simple but effective paint job, plus some flockmix for foliage effect.
Edit: The flock is a mix of several types and makes. Basically I buy a lot of different scatter and static grass and dump them all in the same box.
-
Very nice. I imagine the foliage is your own?

That is a very effective treeman, I'm liking that!

Miniature from the Conan Boardgame by Monolith, 2015. PVC plastic.
-
Wow, you did really well considering the size/plastic of that mini! I liked the Conan minis but they all proved way too small to use with my other figures. Yours really shines though!
-
Yes, very cool. I still have mine locked away. Some exceptional minis in there, you've done a great job as said above.

Off their "Halflings and Friends" kickstarter.
Cast in resin, available in packs of 6 random variants from TTcombat.
50mm base.
-
Nice work. I was hoping to get a few more in myself, but we're down to the final 18 places.
-
183 - Mayan Princess
An amazing 28mm sculpt by Charlie Earl for Gringo 40's (incidentally she's wearing my favourite clubbing outfit as well) - it's listed in their Mayan range, but I'm going out on a limb and saying she's more fantasy than historical!

That would make a very cool Amazon priestess.

That would make a very cool Amazon priestess.
Yup yup, and the main body of the headdress is separate in case you wanted to (blasphemy!) do without it.
-
Paintjob outsanding as usual.
All I can see with those peacock feathers are 6 fish doing a synchronised jump behind her though. ;)
-
Amazing work, Cubs.
-
Yup yup, and the main body of the headdress is separate in case you wanted to (blasphemy!) do without it.
Thabks for the closeup. At first glance I thought she had stuck six barracudas in her hairdo. Lovely pj.
-
Damn, that's a sweet paintjob.
Thanks for the closeup. At first glance I thought she had stuck six barracudas in her hairdo. Lovely pj.
lol lol lol
-
Thanks guys, she's a beauty of a model to be fair, but she sure did take a lot of painting!

Amazing Night terror from CP models that I've painted up as kind of magically re-animated skin wraith

That ... is ... rank! Terrifying!

185 Captain of the Guard - Forge of Ice Miniatures
(http://i.imgur.com/WhV6Sc8.jpg?1) (https://imgur.com/WhV6Sc8)
After a bit of a wait for the fulfilment of this KS campaign I was delighted to see these miniatures arrive at Schloss Fish. I managed to make the time to get the Captain of the Guard miniature finished over the holidays and am very pleased with the result. The miniature is well cast and very well sculpted. Hope to finish up the rest of the guard at some stage soon but might try to get one more thing finished before this painting Club is completed...

186 Wargames Atlantic Hobbit
Never could say no to a “freebie”
-
187 Arwen Undomiel
The classic metal version from GW
-
Gonna slide in right here towards the finish line with a miniature.
188 - Reaper Bones Dwarf Forge Priestess
(https://i.imgur.com/iuF4diE.png)
First mini painted after a ~2 years hiatus. With the current events its been a hassle trying to scrounge up all the necessary supplies, but I'm pretty happy I managed to finish her in time.
(For example, my anti shine sealer hasnt arrived yet, and apparantly my black is pretty glossy ::) )
-
After three or four years of fearing opening the blister...I finally opened my birthday gift and painted "half" of it.
#189: Mordheim "Freelance Knight" from Games Workshop

-
Ooo, love those old GW figures!
What's the other half?
-
He comes with a mounted version of the same miniature - I don't have a huge need for that, but at some point I'll paint it. Stunning to think $13 USD used to get you a hero model and his mounted counterpart. Oh how times have changed. lol

I was just thinking this the other day. The new Warcry Skink set should be around £30, based on the other sets. There are six figures in it and I thought "£5 a figure, that's not too bad" - and then I realised what I'd just thought o_o
I miss the old days of three metal figures for £1.50 :'(

Indeed. In fact I saw on ebay, Troll Trader was selling a complete blister of orc bloodbowl team. Teams in a blister instead of oversized packaging. Made me remember getting my whole halfling team for next to nothing.

190: Desert Tiger, from Conquest Games
So modern it's probably not even on their site yet! Reminds me of the old Citadel Chaos Hound with scorpion tail, but feline and a fair bit bigger.

-
Excellent!
-
Yeah, that's superb - I wish I could paint animals but I end up throwing most of mine out.
-
I like that one Cubs, great paintjob.
-
That’s a strange critter. Beautiful painting though.
It’s been a long haul, but we seem to be accelerating towards the finish line :)
-
Quite a striking kitty. Nice work.
-
We are down to the last 10 places now.
-
I have been really enjoying this thread. I am not sure I will have a chance to get anything suitable done in time to contribute to the final 10 but I am looking forward to seeing what further oddities and delights appear!
-
Damn, was planning to add a couple more to the party. They are on my painting desk right now. Unfortunately I have had a rough couple of months and have been unable to get anything done, painting-wise. Oh well, never mind, eh? Looking forward to seeing what the last few are, though. I've really enjoyed following this one. After a brisk start it slowed down a lot, but I still think it has been great, and that the extra hundred slots because of COVID was a good idea.

191: King Theoden's Outrider pursued by Warg by Games Workshop
(http://www.adventuregaming.tsome.com/MiddleEarth/Outrider.jpg)
-
Nice one Hammers!
9 places left. It doesn't look like I'll make it either.
-
Lovely vignette Hammers.
-
It does not look well for that poor outrider. Nice warg as well Hammers.
192. A bones thief going about her business.
Christmas brought new paints and new cook books. Giving the new paints a try I painted the figure's cloak using Vallejo Galaxy Dust 'shifter' paint Emerald Green, trying for a magic cloak effect. Neat colors but rather glossy for a cloak. Will have to try it again on armor.
-
193. Games Workshop plastic Necromancer
Apologies for poor quality pic!

Last three have been :? Great work fellas!

That's a very nice one! Love the work.
Also for a second I thought the first pic had a nipple ring, it was just the background though, lol

Thank you! Haha, I can see what you mean! lol
-
Its getting close now! Ill have to hurry if I want to snag another spot.
Some great entries here in the last minute. I always enjoy these threads for the sheer variety of miniatures getting paint - Its always nice to see more obscure minis getting a coat and proper basing.
-
I really like that dirty old sword!

Pressures on!
195 - Reaper Bones Ogre

Great work guys. 5 places yet and the undercoat isn't even dry on mine! lol

I instantly thought of the trolls in the Hobbit, funnily enough.
-
Love the style of that Ogre. Even makes it more painful because I have the same model...that's not painted nearly as nice! :D

Made in "Bones Black" hard PVC material by Reaper Miniatures, released 2020.

197 - Converted Oathmark Dwarf
(https://i.imgur.com/4BSeiqO.png)
Arms from a frostgrave barbarian, and a bunch of ... rustic ... green stuff work - I think I'm learning on that front. At least I think I somewhat managed to hide it under the texture. lol
What a beautiful painting style affun, so much light and depth.
Thanks man - I guess all that time I spend staring at some of your minis and wondering how the heck you did, it payed of a little bit ;)
But yea, really glad it comes through. Thanks for the nice comments!
-
That dwarf is excellent Affun,kudos!
-
More great work. No pressure for number 200 there. Better make it good lol
-
198. Ogre
Rangers of Shadow Deep ogre from Northstar.
Lovely model, need to get onto the second one.....wait,thees a third one now too! ;D

-
And with that, we are complete. No more entries please people. Thank you for all your contributions.
-
What a great way to round off and what a great gallery we have here. Oldhammerer at heart though I am and remain, there some great examples of newer sculpts here.
Hats off Elk, a fine undertaking.
-
Well done ladies and gents, a fine thread 8)
-
Wonderful stuff! Really enjoyed watching this gallery develop (and participating in my own small way).
Right, time for another? lol
-
Well done everyone. Some lovely entries throughout this club :)
-
Good work entrants :)
Interesting variety of things on here!
-
Absolutely wonderful stuff filled thread.
Well worth another read through to see the entries.
Thanks to all entries for the inspiration and eye candy, and wonder what the next painting thread theme will be, certainly enjoyed it being twice the the usual number and longer duration this time round
-
The most recent entries are just as interesting and diverse in terms of subject matter and painting style as what went before. This was the first painting party I have contributed to and I hope it is not the last!
-
Well done one and all.
The undead bear is a nice finish. You've done a great job on it!
-
Really inspiring stuff in here. It was convenient that it happened while I was on a Fantasy kick - even if I didn't see it was happening until into the mid-100's!
-
Well, that was fun! Lots of excellent paintjobs.
-
Wonderful, wonderful jobs everyone! Well done all.
-
I looked through each entry again and it appeared (at least on my phone) that some entries had disappeared. Could people possibly check their entries and add their images back in again if they have gone, please?
So, what do we do next? lol
-
I concur - terrific way to end the thread.
It was a lot of fun and I managed to get more miniatures finished than I expected so if the goal was to get languishing miniatures painted then this has been a five star success.
Thank you all for contributing and thank you especially to the admins for running the thread.
-
Right so what's the next one, super modern 2021 fantasy painting thread?
-

Wait, just to check, is it the miniatures that are rude, or the competition?

How about a Rude Miniatures Painting Competition? :-*
Ooooh. Good idea lol
-
How about a Rude Miniatures Painting Competition? :-*
I like that idea. Well volunteered! lol
It's a general topic so Workbench could be as good a place as any to host it?

I'm sure Dylan is up for it.
I'm sure I heard him say he was! :D

As an aside, I see that Pendraken are running a painting competition and have a fantasy category for anyone who fancies some 10mm action?

How about a Rude Miniatures Painting Competition? :-*
So many ways..,
-
Well, that's it isn't it? Which definition of 'rude' are we using? All of them?
I shall perhaps paint the Rude Mechanicals from A Midsummer Night's Dream. I already did an LPL entry about that play many years ago, maybe it's time I painted the rest of the cast?
Oh, and by the way, well done everyone. A most enjoyable club.
-
A great endeavor. Painting clubs are always fun. They are a great way to rescue the odd miniatures that have been lost in the limbo of my painting queue.
A rude miniature will definitely take some thought.
