Military Orders
« on: January 26, 2017, 12:49:40 AM »
These are my test models for a new Military Orders force that I have been looking at doing, I couldn't decide on Hospitallers or Templars so I thought I'd give both a whirl!

For me the Templar was the biggest challenge as I was apprehensive about painting white robes, I find white can be a bitch of a colour to get right on cloth. However on this occasion I think it came out well and I am more than happy with it.

I also really like how the black robes turned out on the Hospitaller, again it's another colour that has the potential to go wrong as too little highlighting looks bland while too much ends up appearing grey. Again I think I got it about right on this fella.

To be fair this test model idea hasn't helped me massively.... I enjoyed painting them both so much that I still can't actually decide what Military Order to collect.... Maybe I'll just have to do both!!

There are a few more images of these models on my blog as well as some past posts showing my other ongoing medieval (and assorted other) gaming projects:

Cheers mate,

Yeah I thought about the hospitaller for a while, but as I'm going for an early Brother-knight (just after the Order militarised following the first crusade) research indicates that their cross started out small and then grew over time.

Great work on both miniatures! Although I prefer a start from beige for white on mine (to get a warm/dusty colour) I like the transitions on your white fabric too. It was the same with me, I couldnīt decide on one particular order, but read then that the Templar sergeants wore black cloaks instead of white (which was limited to the knight brothers of noble origin). Therefore I could field both black & white...  :D

Great work on those Templars; I really like your shields.

Yeah I thought about going for the warmer beige look; but I already do that on my Dark Angels Space Marines so I wanted to try out pure white, which is something I had t really done before.

Hmmmmm.... I still can't decide which Order to do; though there do seem to be far more Templar models available.

I like what you've done with those. I'm with you on the 'painting plain white and plain black' issues. I avoid it when I can, too.

As for me, it's Hospitallers all the way. Not only are they less likely to be involved in a scandal regarding severed heads and sexual impropriety, but they can also perform CPR and administer first aid if someone gets a bit hurt during a battle.

Well done they both look nice but you should go with the Hospitallers as the other lot are well known bunch of heretics.

I think you've nailed them both.

Do you have any tips for painting the black robes? Is it just a simple case of a few layered highlights from black or very dark grey to a slightly lighter grey.... or is there any secret technique?

Cheers guys!

Yeah I have to say the Hospitallers do have an unblemished record compared to the allegations levelled against the brothers of the Temple... but I'm not entirely sure a jealous French Kings allegations are all that reliable!

As for the black my advice is lots of very thin layers of grey; but make sure you leave big, deep black recesses so that the robes retain their overall blackness! Otherwise you end up with a quite washed out looking grey robe!
