Ideas for "Stargate" like troopers?
« on: December 18, 2009, 07:13:41 PM »
I am planning to set up a Stargate inspired game sometime next year.

I have som Wargames Foundry SWAT troops, that I plan to use as part of a Stargate team. But I think they could use some reinforcements. Any ideads for likely troops?

I have tried to find some modern US Marines or such like, but all I find is 28mm - and that is a bit on the large size comparede to the Wargames Foundry miniatures.

For the aliens I have plenty of options - some GW40K Tau is likely to apear as well af some other Mummy stuff that I have lying around. Also I would love to and some of the Wargods of Aegyptus miniatures (but they are also 28mm and would tower over my SWAT minatures).

The Wargods figures are more like 32mm - they tower over most 28mm.

Ground Zero Games still do true 25mm.
The "Street Level" range includes SWAT teams, medics, camera teams, whilst the "Stargrunt" range includes various SF nations and some aliens.
Unfortunately there aren't many pictures :

although there may be more pictures on the main site :

Although for character I'd opt for 28mm, probably from Artizan or Copplestone, or for Stargate MoFo from Gripping Beast.
In 28mm I'd also suggest looking at the pre-painted plastic D&D or Star Wars figures, some make quite good proxies for generic aliens, Go'auld or Jaffa.

If you want to use the large Wargods minis for your sci-fi Egyptians, consider the Black Scorpion US Marines (here) that are also slightly oversized for 28mm figures.

In fact, I painted some of these for the LPL3 as a Stargate team ...

Have you looked at the modern American forces from The Assault Group?

Aren't the Foundry Swat figures from the street violence range and 28mm too?  ???

They don`t have them themselves anymore, but you might get lucky with the listed retailers or eBay, trade fora etc etc.

I'd have said so yes, the women are shorter than the men but I'd certainly have said they fit in with the other 28mm stuff.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Thanks for all the ideas...

And yes, the Wargames Foundry minatures are suposed to be 28mm, but they looks a bit smaller than that - especially the women.

But looks are perhaps decieving?

I tried to mount them on bases, and compared to a Black Scorpion 28mm figure (from their Tombstone Range), they don't look to small. It really helps to let them keep the 1mm base before mounting them  ;)

So I took a look at the Black Scorpion US Marines, and they seem to fit the bill. I also noticed some nice looking aliens... :-*

Well, it time to start painting and building some appropriate terrain. This also gives me some time to give some further thought to wheter the Wargods of Aegyptus range would be suitable after all?

Happy Holidays to all!

Black Scorpion are much larger than traditional 28s, especially when comparing their Cowboys to the Foundry Stuff, which are diminutive in comparison. More like 32mm. The Street Violence figures are a mixed lot, most on the larger side of 28, and the fact that some figures are a definitively poor job, proportionwise, makes them hard to integrate with other ranges.

I would recommend checking the various Copplestone Future Wars trooper figures. Those are a bit bulkier than Foundry figures, but with their integral bases work out acceptably. They fit in better than the old ex-Grenadier Future Warriors now available from EM-4 and Mirliton, which are (IMHO) finer sculpts but a bit on the small side, depending on the figure in question.

Concerning the Black Scorpion Marines, I think they´ll be notably taller than the Foundry Figures, but I´d have to see a proper comparison for a final verdict.

I still think you should look at The Assault Group's US moderns.

I think that the Copplestone Future Wars range holds some very nice miniatures, that would supplement my Foundry SWAT.

I realy like a lot of the trooper figures, and some of the non-humans gives plenty of scenario ideas (the zombie troopers and hunter aliens realy spark my interest).

If you're going into 28mm I would also suggest looking at em-4 :

http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Sci_Fi.html

The metal Future Skirmish range is particularly good - especially things like troopers in berets with data comms links etc. and the paramilitary SWAT team

The plastics are not so useful for Stargate but can be handy for other projects.

Also Doug (the em-4 proprietor) is a forum member here, so you can get hold of him for questions etc.

Unfortunately that particular figure has been out of stock for quite some time. I know because I keep checking :(

I prefer Mark Copplestone’s brilliant Future Wars range for SG personnel!
The pic above is SG 12. The minis are from the above mentioned Copplestone range, the backpacks are from TAG. (SG 12was a RPG campaign I moderated...)

Otherwise I am spoiled because of that:

cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de
