...I just hope Spielberg's effort is going to be better - it would be hard not to be.

Is he working on one?

Edit: I see, a 7-part TV series for HBO based on Kubrick's unfinished project. Hmm.

With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

This has been kicking around for a while.  Most of what I have read makes it sound like it is happening but there is scant detail, which makes me think it probably isn't.  :'(

Finally watched this on a plane last week. It really is as bad as everyone says.

I'll bet some people still walked out.

“I'll bet some people still walked out.”  lol  lol

That’s quite the statement about how bad the movie is! I haven’t seen it yet, and probably won’t.

Are the uniforms at least plausible? I get hung up when a movie or series set in a “historical” period completely ignores what folks actually wore in the time period. That godawful King Arthur movie with Kiera Knightly, for example… I’m not sure that I am up for the masochism OG putting up with enormous plot holes if the visual spectacle doesn’t compensate a bit.

There are a few visual gems in the movie.  The uniforms and sets are great.  I think they did the Coup of 18 Brumaire well.  The battles are awful.  I don't understand how many film critics found the battles to be "epic".  None were particularly exciting (except, perhaps the battle at Toulon) and most completely ignored Napoleonic formations and tactics.

“ The uniforms and sets are great.” That’s  something, I suppose. The movie sounds like a lost opportunity, though. They had a massive budget, high profile cast, and then couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to the historical content. I don’t get that - it’s not like a crew of competent historical advisors would cost anything like what one of the star actors was paid. I can only assume that they didn’t think the audience is sophisticated enough to grasp a historically accurate plot. Given that film critics found the battles epic, maybe that’s justified.

The battle scenes were pretty dire. Some of the scuffles in Sharpe are more 'epic'!

Are you suggesting that Napoleonic battlefield tactics didn't consist of two crowds of men running at each other in disorganised mobs?

I haven’t seen King Arthur but I recall an interview with Kiera Knightly in which she discussed an idea she’d had for increasing her character’s historical accuracy, which wasn’t adopted. It entailed her being naked in a battle scene, apparently to distract her opponents and facilitate her killing them.. More research is needed in this area, I feel.

I'll bet some people still walked out.

Some didn’t even bother asking for a parachute.

So… twist this handle, pull in, and I’m out the door! Glad I read the pre-flight pamphlet!
