Title: Organ Guns
Post by: Stuart on August 16, 2016, 09:09:25 PM
Organ guns, discuss.

I've got myself a couple of the rather lovely Hinchcliffe models and I'm wondering what crew to add, so;

I'm thinking 2 or 3 crew but what would this comprise in addition to the master gunner?

The guns I have are banks of arquebus barrels in rows so in guessing they were loaded in the same manner so an assistant may have a mallet, powder horn or small ramrod?

I also want to add some sort of box and small bore shot in a basket or bags, are there any good manufacturers of various boxes?

On a general note, did each barrel have a touch hole or could a row be ignited as one?

General organ gun chat welcome

Cheers

Stuart

Good news re your organ.. ;)
Re baskets try Bicorne miniatures
. Think they do a wicker basket which has small spheres in it - maybe fruit but I used them as small lead shot.

I have an organ gun for my Tudor army. I have 3 crew, a master & two assistants.

Slight hijack - what about a real organ to go with crusading armies? Those who share my fondness for Alexander Nevski will know what I'm getting at.

TAG do some nice small calibre artillery tools in their renaissance range, I use them for my light guns and hackbutts.

This video has some nifty things to say about Ribauldequins.

This book speaks of a twelve barreled organ gun which could be fired in volleys of three.

As for crew, three men seem good enough to operate it. And since it's more lightweight in operation than other contemporary cannons maybe even a two man crew could suffice.

I had a friend who made one (for ECW re-enactment).
He used 10 musket barrels on a frame with a pair of wheels.
Loading was just the same as loading 10 muskets, but the touch hole was a small slim trough, so if you put powder all the way along you could fire a volley, or if you just primed each barrel you could fire individual shots.

His main problem was the local police who thought it should be classed as a semi-automatic (and as such would need a firearms licence rather than shotgun), but he pointed out that although it could be fired as a 10 shot semi-automatic, reload time was about 4 minutes, so he was unlikely to run amok with it.

I donīt know if itīs too Fantasy-ish for your modeling style but perhaps these bits could be useful for these bags and boxes that you are looking for. :)
