Cultist
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:34:03 PM »
I'm preparing to run a game that's going to involve a cult that follows a tribe who worships the sea. And, for a real twist, it's going to have nothing to do with Dagon or Deep Ones!

In any case, I finished the prototype cultist, which is an actual RAFM Call of Cthulhu cultist:

(click for a larger version)

I'm curious, though: what do you guys think of the flesh? I used a far darker base colour than I've ever used before (Citadel's Dark Flesh, instead of Dwarf Flesh), and I think the darkness really brings out the features, but I'm curious what others think.

Also, any thoughts on the freehand seaweed on his robe? I've done only minimal freehand, so feedback on that would be cool.

I'll post more members of the Esoteric Order of the Sea as I paint them!

The flesh looks good to me, as does the robe.

What worries me more though, is the unholy invisible sweetcorn he appears to be eating. Such things were not meant to be!  :)

Haha, I should work invisible corn into the plot, just to suit the miniature! :D

No way, he's looking into the inscrutable periscope of a paranormal version of Plynkes' sub.

THe skin tone works, and the robe is vibrant. Nicely done.

Most of the time I'm painting the skin lighter. Maybe you should add more highlights to the skin, like you did with the blue.

By the way, it's hard to tell from a b/w picture how colors actually look like...

"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Love the hat, but I know what he's doing.... it's a modeller's superglue accident - he's stuck his hands to his face.

Obviously those cultists are modifying space and time, so it's impossible to get a clear picture!

I'm planning on painting these cultists. They look so awesome!

Well, it's been 1.5 months, but, alongside a bunch of PCs (who I might post later), I finished all the cultists I figure I'll need. I tried to do the faces very dark and highly contrasted, like when somebody holds a flashlight to their face. I figured they'd look more evil that way.

If you only comment on one miniature, I'm interested to hear what you think of the female cop (last one). Read the description for more information.

To see bigger pictures, and other miniatures, have a look at my site.

Cultist #1 was basically an experiment to see how the colours would look, and how the little bit of freehand on the robe (the seaweed) would turn out. It's the only Call of Cthulhu cultist from RAFM that I thought would fit:

Cultist #2, like all the below miniatures, was made by Pulp Figures. I love ever Pulp fig, they make beautiful ones!

Cultist #3:

Cultist #4 is holding a knife. These are supposed to be worshipping a South American god, so I decided to try for an obsidian knife. It's obviously the wrong shape, but I think the black blade sorta works:

Cultist #5 is holding a book. If you can see the book over his shoulder (it's a little small), I filled in with very basic Egyptian pictographs. The South American tribe was originally cast out of Egypt. Here they are:

I also painted up two police officers, who are technically members of the cult (don't tell my players!)...

Police Officer #1 is another beautiful sculpt from Pulp Figures:

Police Officer #2 was interesting. It was originally a male miniature, but I sculpted some new hair and a new chest, then painted the face with higher cheekbones. Hopefully she makes a passable female, I've had mixed reactions from people I showed her to:

And here are some group shots of the full cult, including the cops::

On this one, you can see the altar best. It houses the first gemstone I ever painted:

Hope you like them!

So I realized that the altar, especially since there was a cultist stabbing a knife, needed a victim. I'm not much into the classic sacrifice-a-woman thing (I loved these victims, but I couldn't appreciate them because they're all women), so I dug through my box to find a good miniature. I finally stumbled upon a zombie from Cold War's Dead Will Walk series that was perfect, so here he is:

Also notice the tie.. I figured as long as I'm painting on Christmas eve, I might as well do it right!

<edit> I should also point out that there was no texture (including fingers) on the front of the left hand. Those fingers are totally painted on.
