AZTEC : eagle, jaguar and Ocelotl your opinion?
« on: April 23, 2024, 09:00:48 PM »
When we think of the Aztecs, everyone thinks of the famous warriors Eagle, Jaguar and Ocelotl.
However, a closer look reveals that while this may be true of the Mexicas, it's not so true of other tribes! In fact, Ocelotl warriors only appear in the Mexicas' codices. They appear as ‘a grade/level’ of elite warrior.
They appear as a ‘tax to be paid’ by conquered tribes. But did these Ocelotl exist among these same tribes?
Let's take the case of the conquered Otomi lands. A whole host of special outfits were imposed by the Mexicas. However, there is no trace of this type of outfit in the Otomi codex or in any written texts that I have been able to find.

The same goes for the Jaguar warriors. There is only one representation of a great ‘chief/noble’ who wears only a complete jaguar skin (arms, legs and torso covered with the skin) but no trace or representation of a jaguar ‘helmet’, the chief just has a temilotl.Take the Tlaxcalan warriors.
On the ‘lienzo of Tlaxcala’:
Only one Eagle warrior can be seen, and perhaps this one represents Cauthémoc, the last Mexicas emperor.
Only one Jaguar warrior is represented and here again this one is not a Jaguar warrior but a Jaguar/Eagle warrior.
Jaguar warrior helmet and Eagle warrior body.
The Ocelotl does exist, but no helmet or coloured skin. This Ocelotl warrior wears a Jaguar skin with a feather 'standard' on the back and only the Tlaxcala hairstyle with the famous red and white twisted headband plus feathers on the side. And elsewhere?
We find an Eagle warrior in the home of the last great representative of Tlatelolco, who was killed by a Mexica emperor on a famous codex.
Another codex shows an Eagle warrior and a Jaguar warrior in the Meztitlan army.

And in the text?

Yes for the Mexicas army and after?

For the moment, it is only among the Teenek (Huaxtec) that I have been able to find the presence of warriors in Eagle and Jaguar garb. But are they nobles or priests? No indication.

And what do you think of it?

Hello Anevil,

For the Mexicas the  Jaguard was reserved for the nobility (jaguard skin)
Ocelotl was a rank in the military hierarchy (outfit feather)
