This all began with the "my codpiece is bigger than yours" challenge to a mate on another forum a while back
I have too many projects on the go at present but though it might be fun to put them on the table, but I thought I might have had a few more than this painted to date. Nothing like seeing your troops out to galvanise you into painting more

This Threadomancy project is a superb idea and just what I need to give me a kick in the backside and keep me on track
Background to the project
I've always been a 15mm gamer and have always had a hankering to collect some Italian Wars stuff having had my original inspiration from pictures in early editions of Miniature Wargames.
Around 4 years ago I came across the Artizan range and took the plunge and bought a few units and began painting them up. I think I posted early pics in one of the "Look what I painted in May or whatever month 20xx" threads and also took up a challenge with Levied Troop to use as many colours as I could in completing 1 figure - I think I managed 49 if I recall - I think LT managed more - this was our "my codpiece is bigger than your challenge" and was hosted on an early version of WD3 and with a forum hosting change is lost in cyberspace forever.
I gradually acquired more over the years including being given some as a Christmas Gift from wargames mate Giles Allison and quietly painted them a unit at the time. By 2011 I'd managed this lot on the first page of this thread and remember painting some Eureka Gendarmes for an LPL entry one year and in the following year painted up 12 Artizan Swiss Pike for another LPL entry and I think some more Gendarmes by Eureka. That's as far as I got until last year when I painted another 12 to complete the Swiss Unit
The other missing bit has of course been terrain - being a 15mm gamer I didn't have any suitable stuff apart from an old GW paper building but I later picked up some TSS buildings on a trip home to the UK at Salute and got these finished as background for the LPL entries.
So what's my plan? - two parts - Paint more figures and secondly produce some 28mm terrain
Where am I up to now?
As usual I've been flitting from one thing to another
Additional completed units as of today are below - these are 1st lot of Swiss Pike
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/024_zpsc0f7fe82.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/024_zpsc0f7fe82.jpg.html)
Here's a second unit finished in December 2014 awaiting basing and a flag
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/011_zpsef4d3738.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/011_zpsef4d3738.jpg.html)
The rest are here - so I have another 48 Swiss Pike to paint and I think I'm going to do these in yellow garb
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/012_zps74ac8a33.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/012_zps74ac8a33.jpg.html)
As for more Landsknecht - I've manged another unit again last month
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/010_zps8d1c3435.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/010_zps8d1c3435.jpg.html)
Because there were 4 spare figures I ordered another unit of 20 so they wouldn't feel lonely lol. I think they are on their way to NZ as I type
Buildings - yes another incomplete part of the project - I bought some generic buildings from warbases a few years ago, this is as far as I'd got 6 months ago when we moved house

This a today photo! So they are on the list for completion

Trees big enough for 28mm games just needing the bases finished - a mixture of wubwewised horsehair from Antenoceti's workshop and Woodland Scenic armatures
I think I started these in November
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/miscellaneous/005u_zps56e5d67a.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/miscellaneous/005u_zps56e5d67a.jpg.html)

just the bases to finish as they are today
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/018_zpsb9e79ad1.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/018_zpsb9e79ad1.jpg.html)
More terrain - various walls and hedges will need to be done, this is the state of play today
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/013_zps0f23bdc5.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/013_zps0f23bdc5.jpg.html)

Finally back to figures
Foundry Gendarmes
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/005_zps9763c7d8.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/005_zps9763c7d8.jpg.html)
Old Glory Landsknechts
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/012_zps74ac8a33.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/012_zps74ac8a33.jpg.html)
and Finally the Current WIP
What Old Glory call Swiss and Italian Pikemen
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/009_zps2fd1fa1e.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/009_zps2fd1fa1e.jpg.html)
So that sums it up... this is what I'd like to attempt to get done - i'm hoping the variety and ability to flit from figures to terrain will keep me fresh
As many of the figures that I can get through
Finish the trees, Italian buildings and make some walls, fields, hedges etc
Oh - and we're moving house in 6 weeks and I've got a wargames room to put together ::)
-
What an amazing army and Project! :-*
Will you include baggage train(s) and camp followers and such at some point?
-
Astonishing ambition Kerry :o :-*
I'm following avidly!
-
You've certainly got the bit between your teeth :D
-
Beautiful and that's an impressive number of figures and terrain pieces underway. I doubt the project will be finished before the move ;); good luck for your move BTW!
-
Fantastic! Love the buildings :-*
-
That is a lot of figures to paint. :o This is a period I am increasingly drawn to, so I shall look forward to following this thread.
Love the way you have put together the buildings and trees. I feel the urge to steal I mean borrow the idea. ;)
Good luck with the move.
-
That is a lot of figures to paint. :o
The aim is to paint as many as I can :?
-
I am so loving this! Keep up the good work :)
-
thanks for the encouragement guys
I've managed to get all those generic pikemen on bottle tops finished now
Just the basing left
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/003_zpsniiskvxu.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/003_zpsniiskvxu.jpg.html)

less than 4 weeks to go before moving house and we'll start packing soon so what should I do next
I think I'll tackle some Swiss pike 24 at a time and try and get them finished in time along with proper basing
-
:o :o :o :o Bloody hell - that is prolific work Kerry.
When do you sleep?!!! ;)
-
Amazing. :-*
Basing that many figures at once would drive me nuts. o_o
-
OMG :o I wish I could work that productive :) Bravo, Kerry!
-
that;s a lot alot 8)
-
Thats some Tercio and hats off to the volume, standard and sheer tenacity on this 8)
-
Oh dear lol
-
Thanks guys
to be fair you can see that many of them were almost complete as I tried to show in the original Jan 9 picture
Since then I painted 30 from scratch and did highlights and flesh etc on the other 90 so its not quite as productive as it looks
I've also done a fairly basic job on them, base colours, army painter washes then tried to pick out highlights with really the emphasis on the mass rather than individual effect
Basing that many figures at once would drive me nuts. o_o
Me too and I make such a mess I find that the only answer is to do them in one job lot
-
Brilliant work mate. Or should I say tidy.
cheers
Geoff
-
Great project! Keep on going ...
-
You have some wonderful pike blocks there.
-
Here we go gents I've made some progress after a brief hiatus needed for the NZ Galliopli Diorama project and a house move prior to this
I've finally got around to the basing and flag painting on some of the Pikemen though
Now that I've sent off my contigent to Gallipoli.. :'( https://valleyboyinnz.wordpress.com/
I've made an effort over the past week to finish the flags on the Swiss pikemen by Artizan, the single Landsknecht regiment and Old Glory French Pike
Here's a Landsknecht regiment attacking, I'm not sure about the pose though apart from the large base needed to allow for the leveled pike and won't get another I think
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20025a_zpscshixgn2.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20025a_zpscshixgn2.jpg.html)
Some Swiss regiments. the one on the left was painted a few years ago but I've just added another flag just for the overall effect
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20012a_zpsmclg8i3o.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20012a_zpsmclg8i3o.jpg.html)
Here's a second regiment again in the same red & white colour scheme
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20022a_zpsb1vrhqya.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20022a_zpsb1vrhqya.jpg.html)
The third is a little different and comes with a large dose of artistic licence
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20015a_zpsnmtfboc0.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20015a_zpsnmtfboc0.jpg.html)
The Old Glory Pikemen are really good value for money and pretty simple to paint
The only problem is that I've struggled to find details of French flags of this period and so for now have painted them all in the colours of the Picardie region
The flags are all wrapped on styrene tube that slides over the pike and so are interchangeable in the long run once I get around to painting others ( Credit for the idea goes to James Roach http://olicanalad.blogspot.co.nz/search/label/Original%20Flags)
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20004a_zpskbmtv6fg.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20004a_zpskbmtv6fg.jpg.html)
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20001_zpsvmotpwja.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20001_zpsvmotpwja.jpg.html)
(http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/neythebrave/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20007a_zpswi5z6xma.jpg) (http://s63.photobucket.com/user/neythebrave/media/Italian%20Wars/Italian%20wars%20007a_zpswi5z6xma.jpg.html)
if anyone does know of any other French Flag designs I'd be grateful
I've still got quite a bit to finish though will be moving on to painting some French Napoleonics next for a refight of Waterloo in Wellington in June but in the intyerim I've also bought 2 regiments of Pro Gloria figures from Warlord!
-
Very grand 8)
cheers
James
-
Impressive en masse Kerry :-*
-
ace :D
-
Excellent. It is nice to see the various figures, especially the Old Glory figures in close up.
