Mammoths remote control monstrosities - gunman for hire
« on: May 08, 2020, 01:31:22 PM »
So I recently got into the world of RC toy kitbashing. I've wanted to do something like this for quite a while and last year i took my first step by modding a hexbug spider into a little walking tank (ambulatory listening station 17).
Anyway it seems this is an addictive habit, and I soon discovered the hexbug XL (twice as big and three times as stompy!) and had to mod one.

So to that end here's the battleship Nautilus, a walking lighthouse turned into a monster of rusted metal, machine guns and grime!

The nautilus next to listening station 17.

And here's the video of nautilus stomping around!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFfNp7oH6QM&feature=youtu.be

(there's also a video on there of my earlier creation having a scuttle around.)
I built the nautilus after completing a commission model of the HMS beagle, so it's full of little ship fittings and bits.the main hull is just cardboard packaging covered in plaster wall filler with bits of plastic/metal/junk stuck on.

anyway, I've got plans for something else soon, something bigger...

Found some WIP images on my computer showing the makeup of the nautilus.
as you can see, just junk and superglue!

bloody hell!

That's unexpected, and +1 extra cool

Are you thinking of anything else ambulatory RC based stuff?

I am - I'm trying to get my hands on either a bigtak or a very large RC tank for ...nothing, no real reason, certainly not a mobile town with its own airstrip for micro drones modeled as jet-bikes... that'd be insane.

Those are fantastic! The fact that it’s great modelling with the added bonus of mobility is brilliant.

That's some great and original work. Fantastic!
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Happy you all enjoy them! I've just ordered something truly HUGE from ebay for another mechanical monster and I'm really excited for it.It's gonna be big!

Something big dropped through the letterbox today! A vex robotic scarab kit - a 6 legged beast of a robot! this thing is HUGE and ihave plans to go full mortal engines on it with houses, gun batteries and all manner of detailing to turn it into a walking village.

Here's a leg of this monster next to the smaller hexbug conversion.

And here it is fully built after half an hour on the floor, with a mk1 rhino for scale.

The other two walkers grew about double their original size once i started adding bits to them, so this might actually end up too big for any of my shelves...

I built a new one!

This one was a really quick build, Done in the evening and painted in the morning - he was made as a birthday present for a family member.

This one has no model kit parts, Just old packaging, styrene rod and bits of pencil sharpener and pen insides on top of a hexbug spider.

And the obligatory youtube video...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn-kT61LpKc&feature=youtu.be

I really like the way this one came out - So much so that I almost kept it for myself.I'll likely build another using the same shapes.
