Baden-Powell's The Downfall of Prempeh
« on: April 26, 2024, 03:48:55 PM »
Ashanti Campaign 1895-96, 1st edition from 1896, hardback, green cover with gilt illustration on front (askari and Baden-Powell himself capturing a native scout) in very good condition.  I stumbled upon this book at an estate sale.  While not a campaign of particular interest to me, I love the book for its period illustrations - and there seem to be more of them in the book than the listed ones.  I also wonder if the book is a misprint since some of the pages are not fully cut apart from the printers folds.  Did a little checking on-line and not able to pin down value but other and later editions seem to go for around $35 US.  Only place I could find this particular edition of the book was as part of a closed auction without a listed sell price.

Contenets aren't that hard to find but given the author and the 1st edition, might just be worth a bit.  Of course, as a war-gamer, I am more interested in those illustrations and the content in general.

Oh, the estate sale was of material from a man who ran a mail order historical book business.

"also wonder if the book is a misprint since some of the pages are not fully cut apart from the printers folds."

You will often find uncut pages in older books; it means it is unlikely to have ever been read.

Panzer21, thanks for the input - and the link.

Reason for lined out edit about the image on the cover?  One of the illustrations is that image with explanation.  The askari bit was from that auction site - apparently they didn't bother to look inside to find the correct description.

I am slowly, and carefully, working my way through the book.  Started by reading the last chapter, a good insight into the mind of late 19th century British colonial booster's mindsets.
