Title: Cows for Zulu Kraal?
Post by: Fuzzywuzzieswiflasers on September 24, 2009, 03:46:06 AM
Hello all,

I am scratchbuilding a zulu kraal for my VSF/Colonial games. I want to get some cows for the kraal. Does anyone know of a manufacturer of 28mm cows? The African types , not the european types.

Cheers

Fuzzy.

indeed - in 2 different packs
I would be curious to know if there are others too, since I am a cattle fan myself

btw
there is no "african" cattle
both versions (with and without hump) are not indigenous to Africa and were introduced from Asia in different times and over different ways
both are spread throughout africa, however we are used to regard the humped subspecies as "african"

and they seemed to have been more widespread between pastoralists like Zulu or Maassai
the reason for that may be the many pictures of dead cattle struck down by rinderpest in the late 19th C., of which the humped type was more susceptible to the disease
I also like the looks of the humped bos indicus for african kraals, though I know that they are not the only ones

Irregular miniatures have "two cows" in their 25mm animals section for £1.75 GBP, but there is no pic, so I don't know what they look like  :?

Probably "European" looking cows, but It's a reasonable price to enable a large herd to be bought though and their mail order service is 1st class.

I can recommend foundry's. Theirs are quite nice. If I remember correctly I think they come in two pieces with separate heads.

Sadly the price and shipping cost is quite prohibitive for a large herd. They are lovely though  :(

I have the Foundry ones.  The ones around here in the Fulani herds are uniformly off white with very large dark coloured curved horns, dark grey brown noses. They are very slight  and are usually found in company mixed with the village sheep and goat herds.  The foundry ones are too well fed for most african cattle and if someone will tell me how I will post some pictures.  They may at a pinch do for the larger bulls.  Although of veru forbidding appearance a good glower will see most of them turn away, and a hand on the nose will deal with the rest.

Best
