Back in the early 2000s GW made a few prototype hardfoam terrain pieces, including three small 40k buildings. I managed to acquire and paint two out of the three a few years ago, but I've just got round to painting up the third - this fun little building that I've decided should be a fuel store!

And all 3 buildings together:

More words and pics over at my blog.

Wow; I've never seen these before! 8) They look really nice, could work in quite a variety of settings, and your subdued paintjob certainly helps with that versatility.

Very nice project overall!

A shame GW did not pursue this avenue a bit more though; they are very useful pieces.

As an aside; did that range perhaps also include a fortress like structure with a small tower and a ramp in the 'back'? Because back in the day, my gaming club used to have exactly such a fortress, which I always loved. And a couple of years ago, I managed to buy one for myself. It's also made from hard foam, with a dark grey texture paint on top and some green flocking on the base of the walls (although the paint and flock could have been applied by the previous owner of course, but then again; the one in my gaming club looked exactly like it).

It has a very similar aesthetic to your buildings, and its material is also the same...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

They look great John.

As Daeothar says these would have been great to see go into full production and more.

I had the Tower piece and i am sure that Ziterdes did them for GW.

Yes; I saw these when trying to find a picture of mine.

It is very similar in design, but rather more detailed. The one that I have is a bit more crude, with less detail on the crenelations, and more square in its footprint. Also; the rear ramp on mine is a simple straight affair, where the Ziterdes one makes a couple of turns.

I think it's highly likely that Ziterdes took the design, refined it and started selling it as their own. To be honest; the Ziterdes one does look a lot smarter than mine.

I'll post a picture of mine this evening when I get home...

Thanks all! I think there's definitely a market for buildings like these - something non-military and less genre specific.

@Daeothar: there is an unreleased bunker on the Collecting Citadel Wiki - could that be the one?

Looking forward to finding out!

That Ziterdes stuff looks good -  I should check it out!

As promissed, here's some pics of my hard foam bastion.

The paintjob and flocking are not mine; it's in the exact state I bought it in, and the one at the club looked exactly like this (in some freak sequence of events, it could be the exact same one, but I find that rather unlikely ;) ).

As you can see; it does sort of look like the poor cousin of the Ziterdes one...  :D

Never seen them before, but they look very useful.
You have given the perfect paintjob, generic enough for plenty of settings.

I have exactly the same one (lousy pics included, sorry):

Someone on a Oldhammer group on FB identified it as being Citadel terrain from the time of the 2nd edition of 40K. It wasn't mass produced because the molds degraded faster than expected. There were 2 types - the one we have and another, made for the battle reports on White Dwarf:

They planned on doing a trench system for it, but it was never released.

Those bunkers are great! I've never seen them before, but they're a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing the pics folks :)

Those are great! As much as i get why GW stopped with using hard foam, I also really wish they had done more with it.

I believe the biscuit foam terrain was made by the German firm Ziterdes for GW. I think that the one not in the Battle Report was released by Ziterdes themselves.
