Here’s a new little project I’ve been working on for my WarGods Mycenaeans (to go against my Trojans). After my extensive Walls of Troy project, I wanted to make a home-base that was a little smaller and easier to manage. I chose the famous Lion Gate of Mycenae, and the idea is to make a small scenic piece that can sit in the corner of a game table, suggesting the scene... a battle an the plain of Argos, with the citadel of Mycenae looming in the background.
Happily, most of the historic Lion Gate still exists, and I was able to find some great photos on the web. the faces of the Guardian lion statues are no longer there, so I had to imagine what they would have looked like... close inspection of photos of the ruin show some small peg-holes where the head should be, suggesting that they were originally separate pieces, perhaps even made of metal - bronze or gold. I experimented with the heads facing each other, but they looked better facing out, as if gazing at the viewer as they approach the gate.
I made the pediment from a some Beezputty. And had my friends from Model Earth cast me several - this piece is available to purchase, if you guys want to try your hand at making a gate yourself! You can get one here:
http://www.modelearthterrain.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Ancient-Cat.pdfThe base base made with MDF board, and the the walls are 2-inch insulation foam, with a sheet of 1/4inch plywood stuck to the front that will serve at the battlements - I cut the wave crenelations with a jigsaw, and added a layer of stonework with more cut foam. The Lion Gate pediment sculpture was slightly recessed into the stone, and I took care to make the actual stones around it and the gateway match the historical site. The cliff, road, and mud- rich crenelations were textured with sand over wood glue. everything was then painted with a variety of earth tones and grays for the stone.
The completed photos feature WarGods of Olympus Mycenaeans and the Titans Overlord.
Hope you guys like it! It is currently on display the the Croc Games booth at Historicon, if you are in town come by and see it!
