Title: C19th Khaki- looking for suitable paints.
Post by: Malamute on April 21, 2013, 05:04:57 PM
I am about to start on some British and Sikh infantry I picked up yesterday at Salute from Ironclad Miniatures new North West Frontier range.

I am looking for a triad of paints to use for the khaki.

Any suggestions?

I use Foundry paints with Drab No 12 as the best for Khaki although Buff Leather No 7 can be used if you want a lighhter shade.

I would go with Vallejo English Uniform, adding a little black for the base and a little ivory for a highlight.

Not a triad but the same thing.

Any slight variations between figures would give a natural amount of fading due to the local weather conditions.
 ;)

Sikh Infantry eh, ....
Is this just so you have a reason for getting hold of a big chap with a 'bare chest and a massive weapon'?

I like the Reaper MS Triads (their browns are really nice) - Terran Khaki, for that 'washed-out' look & Khaki Brown for a 'greener' effect

I know some people have had good results with the Foundry 'Rawhide' triad.

You didn't specify what colour you normally undercoat your figures. I use a very dark brown and hence find that the Foundry Drab 12 is too dark a khaki for late Victorian squaddies in India. I use the Foundry drab but omit the darkest shade, start off with the mid shade, then lightest shade and finally highlight with a mix of the drab light shade and white.

I know it will sound odd, but the Foundry old African Flesh triad might work too, as the light shade is very close to what you want I think.

Coat D'armes faded khaki triad or Foundry drab triad for colonial khaki.

Seen here, not on colonial figures:
