I was looking forward to this French mini-series on Netflix. I watched the first episode last night. My wife signed off early into it. She's often smarter than I. I liked the production values; the costumes and the village. The actors were good. The main woman character is quite comely. I suppose the young doctor is handsome though my guesses on that subject never match a woman's eye. The episode began with a warning of gore, violence and smoking. The gore was evident early on. I was looking forward to a series based on the French Revolution cum histrionics. In time I realized it was a Gothic horror story set in the French Revolution. An aristocratic serial murderer of peasant girls, a young doctor up from the gutter, a lovely aristocratic woman with some sympthy for the lower orders, a Haitian escaped slave. Some happenings that reek of the supernatural. And some strong hints that folks will rise from the dead in future episodes.
If you like Gothic horror then this is your ticket. On the other hand, if you were looking for a period costume soap a la Downton Abbey with muskets, as I was, then this will be a let down. I don't intend to watch any more episodes. Your mileage may vary. :-X

If you wanted gore, the actual history is gory enough without making up dumb stuff about serial killers and zombies.
I don't think I'll get that Netflix subsription just yet. :)

...
It might be the reason why a "sub-part" of the revolution period was called La Terreur…

Sounds like something I might like. Thanks.

I actually like how they weave historical facts in a supernatural story. It is really nicely done, especially so if you have the original French with subtitles.

I have seen the first two episodes so far... not bad gothic horror. A bit melodramatic and artistically too over the top at times for my tastes but some interesting characters and an engaging story.

Looks promising to me. I like that it is in French, which my wife and kids speak pretty well, so we can all practice together.
Just getting started with the plot.
I love the setting, though. Much of the fun in shows like this is being taken to a totally different world.

Watched the first episode. Meh. Not my cup of tea.
But others I am sure will really like it.

Sounds like something I was watching about the Roman invasion of Britain. I got through the first episode but bailed in the 2nd....

Well on the strength of having watched the first episode, it looks absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful production design and luminous cinematography. Will have to wait an episode or two to see how the story shapes up, but I quite like it so far. Reminds me a bit of ‘Taboo’ - you’re not quite sure whether you’re watching Gothic Horror or a political period piece. It turns out to be a little of both.
-
I liked Taboo so maybe this will suit too.
-
Yeah, I agree with the similarity to Taboo. I had not thought of that but now that you mention it, I see it.

Finally finished the first season. Not bad. Entertaining anyway. That said, it had an annoying cliffhanger season finale though.
I think I will integrate the premise into the background of the Napoleonic Gothic Horror project I am working on.
-
Yeah, the ending was irritating. Clearly they’re banking on a season 2 in order to cycle back around to make sense of the very opening sequence with the young girl at the start of episode 1 ::)

Anywhere to catch this for us mere mortals?
-
I caught it on Netflix in Germany, is it not available on Netflix in the UK?
-
I'm not a subscriber.

I liked it, but I knew what I was going to watch. The "revolution" part is just an excuse for a Gothic horror show with wigs and flintlocks. The history is only the background, but the show is honest in that regard: they don't pretend to be a historical flick. If there is a second season, I will watch it.

Yes, it is.
