Mars, the story so far.
Humans arrived on Mars three years ago to the accolades of those in power. The first to arrive were the Japanese followed closely by the British and then the other powers of note. The opportunities were thought to be endless and an almost gold-rush mentality by governments ensued; each sending as much as they could to the red planet without endangering their holdings on Earth. Aether travel was expensive but it was thought that the riches found on Mars would more than compensate the expenditure.
The first contact between human and Martian was not without it's problems; language being one of them but a professor from Cambridge specialising in anthropology was quick to pick up on the Martian language, noting various similarities between some of the ancient tongues used on earth thousands of years ago. This in itself brought up more questions than answers and there is now a strong scientific population on Mars studying the indigenous population as much as they can (or will be allowed).
One of the other problems was the human trait of greed, which can effect the best man given the right circumstances. Various raw minerals; rare on Earth were to be found with abundance but mining them was to prove difficult. A type of Martian unbeknownst up till this time was incredibly protective of their territory; destructively so. Several mining camps and expeditions have recently fallen to the 'Sky Martians' without the humans finding out much more about them than the scattered eyewitness accounts that tend to be dismissed as the ravings of lunatics.
The Humans have made several beachheads on Mars itself with the largest; New Victoria being almost the size of a small city. The British and Japanese enlisted the help of the 'City Martians' in building the walls of New Victoria and these have now become a wonder of the Victorian age: not only for their size but also the speed in which they were built and their scope. A railway network has also been developed and expanded since the first year of colonisation and it now connects several of the larger human settlements and is continually growing, bringing civilisation to the remotest parts of the human colonies.
The Sky Martian problem is becoming more apparent as more camps and facilities are falling quiet. Even the journalists are taking a heavy toll, some expeditions into the interior not coming back at all.
What will happen when the Earth powers band together and stop their petty squabbles. What will happen when the Sky Martians show their true strength: as it is believed that what has been witnessed so far is but a small taster of what is to come...
Time to resurrect this project again :D
For those that don't know I had a rather large thread chronicling our adventures on the red planet. There were an awful lot of photos on the last oneand the thread is here (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=21604.0), most of them wips and when I come to start again on the various builds I'll post some previous wip pictures first as an explanation.
The project did and will include such things as VSF armies, neffs of all shapes and sizes, Victorian architecture on Mars, Sky Martians, City Martians, Plains Martians, flora and fauna, game reports and anything else that fits the bill.
For the time being here are some photos from the Salute 2015 game that best shows the vast majority (so far) of the project.
Welcome to the Red Planet :D

It's nice to see this starting up again. Are you perchance planning ahead to Salute 2019? :P
-
It's nice to see this starting up again. Are you perchance planning ahead to Salute 2019? :P
Quite possibly :)
-
It's great to see this thread again. All the pictures from the old thread seem to be gone.
-
Yeah, Photobucket did the dirty and I deleted my account. I've still got the vast majority of the pictures here and there though :)
-
Looks fantastic! Very inspirational =]
-
Terrific
-
Very cool.I especially like the Funicular and the 'Sapporo' whisky (?) distillery giving the Japanese presence.
-
Thanks chaps :)
There'll be a City Martian post later today once I've sorted the photos out.
-
This board is awe inspiring, I remember seeing it at Salute.
I still love your martians and their sky-ships.
-
Splendid set up...Huzzah!
-
I've had the pleasure of seeing this in the flesh and it's even more impressive.
-
Still got to be one of the best boards out there! Nice to see this on the go once again! :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
Update tomorrow, got caught up with other stuff today.
-
That is one smashing table :)
-
Lovely, James!
I am not much into VSF, but this these threads always make me want to put together a colonial force of Venutian Parrotmen.
-
Cheers fellas :)
So, what's new? City Martians for a start. They will be going to the casters early next month and will be released shortly after (there's still a little bit of work needs doing to them first) and what are figures without terrain :)
Some of this was on the previous thread and some of it is new. The signal tower and trading post are new elements that I've had done recently, there's still a it of work to do on the trading post but it's 85-90% there.
The large gatehouse, farm and signal tower were all made from card and the trading post from a lightweight modelling foam. When I come to do another piece of City Martin terrain there'll be a run down of the construction process.

Looking good James :)
-
Great stuff glad to see you back at this subject
Any chance of some closeups of the figures in the last few photos, I haven't see those before?
-
I'll sort some out later as they've been put back in their box for now :)
-
Looking good, I love the angles on these buildings.
-
Superb additions! They fit in nicely with the Martian set up. :-*
-
Cracking! :o I didn't know you had fleshed out the martian side of things too! Some great ideas in there!
-
I'm glad to see this expanding with some elegantly simple buildings. That both compliment and contrast with brick and stone of Human cityscape.
Mark.
-
Excellent stuff there! It's all fab obviously, but those Martian buildings are really cool.
-
Wow. Those are beautiful :-* :-*
-
Nice to see your tread back - excellent as always
Blodwin
-
Every imaginative great bit of work :)
-
Thank you kindly chaps :)
-
Blimey - these are a bit good, plenty of fodder for desert inspiration here too for my projects. Lovely job.
-
That's some beautiful stuff there!
-
Thanks for posting this thread - wonderful to see these back. That board is VSF gaming on the grand scale.
-
Top job, but then we've come to expect this level of excellence from you now James :D
-
Thanks again chaps :)
-
good work :-* :-*
it reminds me of my youth when I impregnated the fort sahara airfix to my brother is my most distant memory of miniatures
-
Wow those Martian buildings are stunning!
-
Cheers fellas :)
-
can you tell me what color scheme you use for your Martian soil ::)
-
lol Why would that be ;)
The bases are painted with a tan colour the same colour as masking tape, sand is then glued on and when dry given a wash or Windsor and Newton sepia ink (watered down 60/30water/ink). when this is dry I drybrush them with the Foundry triad Ocre although I now have colour match tester pots from B&Q (B&Q is a large diy shopping chain here in the UK) so it's much cheaper than using the Foundry colours. To finish them off a few random tufts of long pale brown grass are added.
I hope that makes sense, if you've got any more questions then ask away :)
-
thanks for your answer i think i can get something similar (and yes it was clear) for what i'm going to do you will know later naughty boy who had distracted me with martians lol lol
-
lol lol
Wasn't me lol
-
How do you design your Martian buildings? They look ace!
-
Thanks :)
I'm not really sure lol I've just had a sort of design ethic in my head for them for ages now and I try to keep to it for each build and so far it seems to be working.
I really should sort out the photos of the other builds and post them :?
-
Slowly going through the photos and deciding what to post. I think roughly the same order as the original thread apart from the troops which seriously need much better photos :?
So, it was neffs first. I've got quite a fleet sorted now and below is pretty much what is complete. I have some wip shots of neffs yet to be completed and I'll post those up next (when I find them in a day or so).
There are still some details to go on some of them, like flags, ships wheels etc, but they are table ready and have seen action several times.
Here is the first one I did and it was actually one of the first builds I posted here around ten (?) years ago. It's called the Kaze (pronounced Kahzay) and everything on it is scratchbuilt apart from the spotlight and the chains on the deck (GW products)

And then we have a very tiny Admirals launch. The top is a resin cast of an old mould I made at uni (which is now defunct) and the hull is scratch built.
Next is a small gunboat, the Misugi. Scratchbuilt again apart form the turret gun

Then it's an armoured heavy gunboat, the Amagi. Scratchbuilt again.
And finally for now this is the floating defense platform. Once again scratchbuilt apart from the turrets.

Bangtidy ;D
-
Looks really really good!
-
Oh my
-
Thanks chaps :)
Found some wip pics of some more neff’s but I’m still missing a couple :?
-
Remarkable - really looks "real" (if that is the appropriate word for an imaginary vessel !)
-
Nice to see pics of all the neffs. Pity they often end up colliding with bits of ground (aka crashing) lol lol lol
-
This is art this is :)
-
Spiffing stuff!
...but to be able to scratch build beautiful models like yours... :o
-
.....and we keep getting reminded of just what good stuff Photobucket took from us! >:(
Great stuff big chap! Brilliant modelling! :-*
-
Many thanks gents :)
Apart from Dave, who can turn the lights off when he leaves ;D
-
Great to see these back on show :-* :-* :-*
I still think my favourite is the very first one, The Kazey.
About time we seen these all in another battle report and a group shot would be nice
-
Handsome, one and all! And, yes, did I expect otherwise? :-*
Bit curious about the Kaze: do the 'fins' rotate? Not sure I understand.
Doug
-
Impressive stuff, they look very real, as if they're flying out of historical pics. 8)
-
Cheers fellas :)

The aerofoils act like rudders wherein the rear can angle to give direction. They are only like that in the photo because they are rear heavy and weren’t stuck into the hull properly (this has now been rectified).

Gotcha!
Don't forget to share these in the flying-stuff/airbourne, pinned thread. These deserve historic display!
Doug
-
o_o
I'm just in awe of those 'nefs. They really are astonishingly good (I shouldn't really be astonished James, all your stuff is excellent, you consistently produce lovely things). Both the build and the painting on these are marvellous. I agree with Metternich - they do look 'real'.
-
Thanks gents :)
So, found most of the wip pictures and all of them are still in the state they are in these photos lol
First off is a torpedo neff. This one only need the aerofoils and tail prop doing before it can be painted. I've made some aether/air torpedoes as well but I can't find them ::)

Then we have a little cargo skiff/neff. Actually complete but I don't have any decent photos of it.

A bit of fun and whimsy for this next one (even though neffs are total whimsy anyway), a flying Chinese junk, or a Flunk. I really fancy digging this one out again and finishing it off soon and maybe making some attack sampans to go with it lol
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/34/2619-070718154415-341671342.jpeg)
Some underwater fun now, an aquaneff (yes, I know it's really a submarine but aquaneff sounds so much better lol). Not too much left to be able to finish it off but I got a bit stuck on the 'cockpit' and left it there.
And finally for the wips is the Mikasa. Hopefully the unprimed shots make sense. Lots to do on this one and I should get it out and finish it as it might make an appearance at Salute next year...

Onto New Victoria for the next updates including the viaduct :)
-
Great update mate! :o Is Mars big enough for your Mikasa? You might even need a second......Mikasa and Sukasa! ;)
-
You might even need a second......Mikasa and Sukasa! ;)
Get your coat lol
-
Truly awe-inspiring. The Junk is my favourite of the lot, very Miyazaki with those propellers.
-
Wonderful. You are truly creating an alternate world.
-
Belated thanks :)
Something new for Mars. These have been in the painting queue for several months now but I finished them off today (in between other stuff). The figures are the Japanese from my small Boxer rebellion range with Perry plastic British heads.
The Royal Interplanetary Society.
And the flag for the noble venture. The honour scrolls are for the Moon, Mars, Phobos, Deimos and Venus. There’ll be plenty more to add in the future >:D
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/34/2619-180818185640-348862038.jpeg)
There will be a few more units, some transports and ground armour and potentially a neff or two :D
And some civvies/scientists...
And a headquarters building lol
Can you see where this is going? ;)
-
Very nice, that flag is a doozey. I forsee Mars real estate expanding?
-
Lovely work as always James! I now have half a company of redcoats looking over my shoulder going '... so why ain't we painted as nicely as that, ey? Ey?'
-
A splendid sight indeed. ;D
-
Stunning! I cant even find words to praise the magnificence (both in size and modelling/paintig skill) of this beauty!
-
Many thanks chaps :)
I forsee Mars real estate expanding?
Yeah, so do I :(
lol
-
Jolly Nice, the blue puggarees are a nice touch.
-
Lovely stuff James. The Mikasa looks awesome :-* :-* :-*
We must talk about aquanefs at some point.
-
What an impressive amount of impressive work!! :o
-
Many thanks gents :)
The mojo is slowly coming back :D
We must talk about aquanefs at some point.
BLAM?
-
Many thanks gents :)
The mojo is slowly coming back :D
BLAM?
Yes indeed. We may need to find a new world to fight over :)
-
Hmmm. One of Jupiter’s moons then I think could be a water world?
-
Very nice indeed :-*
-
Great colours!
Each of those battle honours is a story to be told.
-
And we might get around to telling them lol
It has given me an idea to do an asteroid aether flyer base...
-
Hmmm. One of Jupiter’s moons then I think could be a water world?
That would be Europa:
Of course, it doesn't need to be icy in our VSF world
Or we could go out to Neptune:

I do like posters like that 8)
So, on the next part of this ever expanding project, mines...
The Victorians, being ever resourceful, are branching out into the lowlands in search of minerals, precious gems and rare substances. I already have a few sections of plateau edge so there’s no harm in expanding them :D
First off is the inspiration for this part of the project. It’s from Studio Ghibli’s Laputa anime from 1986 (one of my all time favourite Ghibli films) and the image was taken from he internet although I’ve got the making of book for plenty more like this. I won’t be taking it this far but it is tempting...

So, onto the builds. I tried a little shack as a tester for colours and method. The yellow on the tin/iron walls is a bit yellow but I’ve got the new paint all sorted. It’s made from corrugated card stuck over a card box and was quick and easy so there’s no reason why more complex buildings can’t be made (‘growing’ out of the cliff etc).

And now onto the main bit for now. I’ve had the trestle for a few years now so it’ll be good to finally finish it off. I’ve got the jig as well so I can make more uprights and one will go against the edge of the cliff and match up with the loose section (I’ll get around to doing a curve at some point). The cliff is just cork with the gaps filled in with little offcuts and the back is just foam core to bulk it out and get it to match the existing. The rails (both drawn and real) are only for show and specific ones will be built to fit. There will also be some sort of loading dock, hence the Fairburn crane and a possible mine entrance into a higher cliff level.

That trestle bridge is a bit nice! This is blurring the lines between wargaming and model railway building but still looks very gameable (ie the terrain isn't fixed like model railway terrain might be). Buildings coming out of a cliff edge could look very cool indeed.
-
I won’t be taking it this far but it is tempting...
pfff little player is going lol lol
-
nice start
-
Its going to be epic.
-
You, my old Chinaman, are a veritable Duracell rabbit of terrainmaking. Lovely and inspiring!
-
Good golly! :o
Can it be used for Old West too?
-
Many thanks gents :)
Can it be used for Old West too?
If you’re happy with the red, then yes. I’m not keen myself though
-
Ah! Red when painted. I was thinking as is.
-
It’s to go with the rest ;)
-
Nice work James. Something else for your nefs to crash into lol
-
Can it, gin freak ;D
-
Good golly! :o
Can it be used for Old West too?
He'll just have to build another one for the OW ;) lol
-
Stunning bridge :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
How about a turntable at the end so the track goes somewhere, instead of just ending
-
The pair of you stop making things more difficult than they already are lol lol
-
You'll need a damaged section too.
-
lol
I hate you.
-
lol
I hate you.
Only trying to help! :D
-
Your also going to need a bigger table to fit all the extra bits on :D
-
Don’t I just know it ::)
I am going to re-do the canals so they sit on top of the boards so I don’t have to worry about raising everything up to meet the existing ones.

The vast majority of the rock strata on Mars seems to be composed of a very porous material which, although it can be easily dug through, has no real structural strength for the necessary construction requirements that are needed here. There is a darker and denser rock to the north which is being quarried for the construction of New Victoria but sa fortune would have it a plethora of semi-precious gems and metals in their raw form have been found deep in the porous rock formations in the lowlands to the east of New Victoria.
Also, for the time being, the Sky Martian activity in this area has been non existent. But for how long..
Exert from the Journal of Von Stypherdyck - Oct 1890
Gave myself some 'me time' today and got a fair bit done on the mine set up. When I get a bit more time and free up some space I'll get the boards out and try for a decent set up.
The cliff is done along with three buildings (currently working on a fourth that goes from the bottom of the cliff to the top) and sprayed the trestle brown although it still needs finishing.

The cliff to the left is quite a few years old and will need a new highlight at some point as it's faded over time.
-
AMAZING TRESTLE James! 8) Wowzers that looks good, it really has the OW vibe to it mate and its modular. My mind boggles how you solve problems like that mate, id have ended up gluing it in situe. lol
Cheers
Matt
-
Awesome, can’t wait to se it in the flesh ;D
-
Coming together nicely :-* Can't wait to blow that trestle bridge up in our next Mars game - are you doing a ruined one? lol
-
Cheers fellas :)
Can't wait to blow that trestle bridge up in our next Mars game - are you doing a ruined one? lol
I suppose I’ll have to now lol
It’ll be a lot easier than a constructed one :D

Looking great James :-*

Just take a box of matches with you :D
-
Fantastic, James! My bridge looks much more rickety. Not by design but by my lack of skills.
-
Simply put - absolutely fantastic terrain (and train). I am awestruck.

Cheers fellas :)

like it a lot

Crisis on Mars!
It is with a heavy heart that your humble servant, Archibald Harris-Hampton, has to inform you, dear reader, of the crisis unfolding on The Red Planet.
As some of you know already, diplomatic tensions between the Empires of Britain and Japan have been somewhat tense these past months due, not in some small part, to the actions of Allan Farquarson and his band of followers under the guise of the Great Martian Trading Company.
Things have now come to a head with the capture of Allan by the Japanese and their City Martian allies. The Crown cannot accept this course of events against this gallant British ex-serviceman.
The battle lines are being drawn between England and Japan without much regard for the other Nations on Mars and the rumour from both camps is “With us or Against us”.
What will the other Powers decide; to fight with the Imperialistic Japanese or to side with the British, the more numerous occupants of The Red Planet.
As ever, your humble servant will be no doubt be in the thick of things to record the historic events about to unfold...
-
Report from the Asahi Shimbun upon the situation in Mars.
The notorious Allan Farquarson has been finally captured by the Glorious Japanese army with help from our City Martian allies. He is being held in a compound 50 miles northwest of New Victoria until he can be transported to Japan to face justice for the crimes he has committed.
The British Government haven’t taken the necessary action against this notorious villain therefore the Imperial Japanese Forces have had to take matters into their own hands.
The British have been extending their influence on Mars beyond the agreed stipulations on the Expansion Treaty and this worrying state of affairs will have to be dealt with post haste.
The other Powers will need to decide who is the biggest threat on Mars. The expansionist British or the Japanese who are willing to work with other Governments for the betterness of all involved.
Yukimura Hasegawa - Martian Correspondent for the Asahi Shimbun.
-
And what do the British have to say about this?
Where will the Prussians, French and Americans stand?
Looking forward to this.
-
Very interesting :P
Need any extra figures or vehicles?
-
"notorious",sounds a bit harsh to me ;) :)
This'll be fun at Blam :)
-
Cheers fellas :D
Need any extra figures or vehicles?
Nope, all sorted. Plenty to go round on the day :)
"notorious",sounds a bit harsh to me ;) :)
Oh. Belive me, it’s well deserved >:D
-
Excellent! We love it when it kicks off on Mars!
-
The viaduct is totes amazeballs :o :-*
Be better if it was for Old West, but I'm sure it can do double duty ;) lol
-
Oh. Belive me, it’s well deserved >:D
It’s all one big misunderstanding ;)
-
It’s all one big misunderstanding ;)
I believe you, probably something lost in "translation" ;)
Surely "scamp" or "rascal" is a more gentlemanly description of Allan? :)
-
He’s a cad and a bounder of the worst sort.
Although it’s looking like he will get rescued because I’m currently outnumbered three to one lol
-

Unless someone arranges a little accident for him ...
-
The Imperial Russian Martian Expeditionary Force could be persuaded to throw their lot in with the Japanese, but not next week as they don't quite have the staff yet. lol
-
lol
-
I suppose the British will be recruiting for their indigenous regiments ?
-
Both the British and Japanese have Martian Askari but they are called Aak Naks.
Will need to post some photos soon and probably get another unit or two done.
-
Lovely stuff.
Is the train in the old thread (before I start to go digging)?
-
Cheers :)
It is but there’s no pictures there. I will post them here in due course (after the weekend probably).
-
Got some long waiting troops done. Summer uniform Japanese as Mars can get a bit warm.
General Doyusha

Newest unit (although they’ve been primed for over a year ::))
And all the summer troops so far. I’ve got enough for another couple of units and a mortar before having to buy some more.
I’m still going to be massively outnumbered at the weekend :'(
-
Beaut figures James, good luck on the weekend mate, I hope the dice rolls are all in your favor*.
Cheers
Matt
*You did get those loaded dice right?
-
What they lack in numbers they make up in splendidness. Very nice looking figures.
-
Very nice 8)
-
Cheers fellas :)
Matt, even loaded dice don’t help me I’m that rubbish at rolling them lol
-
Lovely whites and golds on those troops. And the grey too - considering he's blown up to three times the actual size!
-
Very smart looking.
-
And very summery 8)
-
Thanks gents :)
-
Although it's poor taste to wear white after Labor Day.
-
Not on Mars and not by the Japanese ;D
-
Very nice :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely. Glad to see that this has been resurrected.
-
Oooooh! Rather splendid. I think white is one of the hardest colours to get right and you've pulled it off nicely :-*
-
Well those summer uniforms look ‘all white’ 😂 all puns aside very nice figures and paintwork...
-
Thank you kindly gents :)
-
Got a quick steam wagon completed recently. The design is probably a bit late for our time period but it’s VSF so I’ll let it go :)
It’s mainly styrene with old plastic GW wheels and a few brass bits here and there. The crates are resin ones that I’ll be releasing soon.

Nice work James
-
Very nice, and utterly, typically, classically Victorian: lots of consideration given to the aesthetic appearance despite it being a utilitarian load carrier, and no consideration whatsoever given to the safety or comfort of anyone using or driving the thing...
-
Thanks chaps :)
no consideration whatsoever given to the safety or comfort of anyone using or driving the thing...
That’s the idea lol
-
That's a rather splendid contraption. Now we need to see a version converted for war.... ;) lol
-
lol
Just a revolving cannon on the back will do ;D
-
That's a very nice build. I think it looks fine for vsf, it'll fit right in.
-
no consideration whatsoever given to the safety or comfort of anyone using or driving the thing...
That’s the idea lol
You cannot build an Empire if you have to worry about OSHA.
A really nice piece of work. Could do with more rivets for my taste, but that's rivet-counting.
-
Looks great 😊!
Nice bit of kit I’ll be jealous of the new owner...

Very nice bit of work :-* :-* :-*

Wonderfully VSF build. Bravo

Many thanks chaps :)

So, after taking a severe beating last night I’ve decided I need more independent troop types to bolster current forces. Gone for Copplestone naval brigade but with a different colour scheme. Test figure for now but I think it works and it was fairly quick to paint.
-
Looking good. His expression suggests he's out for revenge for that beating...
I look forward to reading the British 'news'paper accounts of the battle...
-
Looks good James.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Andy, all of the battle reports go on the Red Planet Miniatures blog linked below but I’m playing catch up at the moment so this particular beating won’t be seen for a while yet lol

Looks like Confederate navy in his grey uniform!
How about a white uniform covered with Nartian dust (=pink) :D
... or a striped top? o_o
-
I think that works. Perhaps they are from the Independent Trading Company of Lord Trotter?
-
I think that works. Perhaps they are from the Independent Trading Company of Lord Trotter?
That would, perhaps, account for the success of James' forces on the battlefield lol lol lol
-
lol
-
I think the grey works well for independents.
-
What a great and inspiring thread...:)
Very well done...
Cheers,
Don
-
Got another unit of summer uniform Japanese done. There’s only nine here as there is a test figure in a box somewhere so it will be a unit of ten. Got the independent sailors primed so will move onto those next :)

Apart from you ;D

As promised (at some point previously, can't quite remember when) here are the troops and some of the equipment I've got for the Japanese forces on Mars.
First off some of the first figures I painted for the project nearly eight years ago :o
The 2nd regiment plus support.
The 4th cavalry squadron.
The 3rd regiment in summer uniform (although they need new flags and some more command figures) plus support.
A massive Krupp gun because what's VSF without silly guns lol
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/37/2619-040319213257-379091603.jpeg)
A couple of RX-78 walkers (converted from Steamboy toys)
And finally two prototype steam contraptions. Pretty much fully scratchbuilt.
I think I've got enough for at least another 'regiment' but whether to do them on blue or white ???
-
How about a Mars dust coloured unit, could be veterans? :)
-
Not you as well lol
I'm not doing pink!
lol

Not you as well lol

Obvioiusly lacks confidence lol lol lol

There are not enough of them to take on all the Great Powers. (Except the French abd they don’t really count). ;) :)
-
That's an impressive force. What about a sapper / engineering unit?
-

Oi - enough of that!

That's an impressive force. What about a sapper / engineering unit?
That’s a good idea. No idea how to implement though lol
Oi - enough of that!
He’s got a point, they haven’t showed up yet and I’ve been taking a beating lol
-
I do believe they are outnumbered even by the Norwegians, even if they (I) have not expanded their forces in a year or three. (slacker)
:D
-
Nice to see all your toys out together
I like the idea of sapper unit
-
Looking splendid.
Where is the Krupp from?
-
Looking splendid.
Where is the Krupp from?
Looks like the HLBS one, but they have recently redone their website and the gun isn't listed any more/yet
-
A most splendid collection to salivate over :-*
-
Cheers gents :)
Where is the Krupp from?
No idea but I know it’s not HLBSC. I’ve got another two waiting to be done lol
-
which info do you recommend for the Japanese uniforms?
-
which info do you recommend for the Japanese uniforms?
To be honest they’re made up but based on the uniforms of the Boxer Rebellion. The figures are Back of Beyond Chinese but are good enough for VSF :)
-
Those Walkers are wonderful.
-
Thank you :)
Took some fairly decent photos of the train and rolling stock that’s been done so far. Most are from the Minicraft Vulcan kit but there are some scratch builds; most notebly the long bogie. The generic covered wagon and crane wagon use the same bogie but the ‘tops’ are different.
The loco and the two passenger carriages are straight kit builds, the rest are either scratch or conversions.

Well they're a bit impressive! I think the crane is my favourite.
-
nice indeed ! Why the die in the coal tender?
-
Thanks chaps :)
Why the die in the coal tender?
It was originally a count down mechanism to see how long the train had to stop before getting to the station (particular scenario) but it can also be used as a normal turn marker.
-
Great to see it again. I think it should make an appearance in the next game. :D
-
Looks great. Love this thread so much.
-
I want.
-
Simply brilliant. I particularly like the armored wagon with Gatling turret, and the gun wagon.

Great army and train...oh and blue uni’s is the way to go (IMO)...

Cheers fellas :)
I think it should make an appearance in the next game. :D
Me too! Me too!
.oh and blue uni’s is the way to go (IMO)...
I could be tempted lol
-
Spiffing, let's get it out and blow it up again.
-
I love it! :-*
-
I may have missed it,
This is an "O" scale train, right? If you had a Tripod to go with the figures/terrain/buildings, how tall would it have to be, to be in scale?
Or close enough?
I've seen the 4' one on here from surfing, that tall?
Great stuff!!!
-
It's reportedly 1/45 so whatever that means in rail gauges (I've no idea).
Make the tripod however tall you fell is right, 10"-15" seems right to me but that might be too big for you.
-
Spiffing, let's get it out and blow it up again.
Yeah! Let’s do it. The GMTC/German alliance attempting to blow up a train out of New Victoria carrying Japanese troops and the cowardly turncoat Cuthbert Arbuthnot. ;) :D
-
You're on >:D
-
I'm jealous!!!
You guys are going to have a BLAST!!!!
lol lol lol

:D
So, carrying on with getting some of the old photos here I’ve got some buildings to show. These aren’t all of them by any stretch, some of the photos need editing and some buildings just need photos.
First off, the New Victoria barracks
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/38/2619-080319195025-380121359.jpeg)
Then a generic warehouse (which needs tarting up and rebasing as it’s had a bit of damage since this photo was taken).
A bit of a factory building.
A simple water tower.
‘Le Monde’ a French newspaper works.
The warehouse/works of the London Illustrated News.
And finally for now a small warehouse compound.
Most of them could do with a bit more weathering and tarting up but they have seen table action several times :)
-
It's reportedly 1/45 so whatever that means in rail gauges (I've no idea).
European O gauge, though the Minicraft Vulcan may have been a narrow gauge...
-
Nice buildings James :)
-
Nice to see these beauties again! :-*
-
Nice work James. Are the roof sections of the two newspaper works removable for interior play? (am thinking of copying the layouts over to my Victorian London project)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Are the roof sections of the two newspaper works removable for interior play? (am thinking of copying the layouts over to my Victorian London project)
'Fraid not as they were cobbled together from scraps (you don't want to see the back of it lol)
-
Lol
Still, I particularly like the diminutive French works 8)
-
Good stuff!
The last ones I build were for Wild West and medieval games. Lovely buildings!
Cobblestones done how? You sculpt them, or just put down thin cut cardboard?
-
Cheers :)
The cobbles in front of the barracks are Wills sheeting.
I’ve taken some fairly decent photos of all the completed mine/outpost buildings so far. The smallest one is a bit yellow as I forgot to give it the final drybrush colour and the roof supports for the open warehouse need a bit more weathering.

Really nice :)

Nice work James :-*
-
lovely :-* :-* :-*
What are they mining?
-
lovely :-* :-* :-*
What are they mining?
Unobtainium, surely. Or, if they're really lucky they have struck marsipan.
-
Thanks chaps :)
They are mainly mining raw materials and some semi precious metals but also they are on the look out for ‘lift stones’; small, football sized ‘gems’ that, when dug up, have antigravity properties. ’
-
Very nice, and even better IRL
-
Thanks chaps :)

Do they catch them with butterfly nets?
Very nice builds and looking forwards to seeing them alongside a quarry (perhaps with a horde of crazed miners for a VSF take on Ghosts of Mars lol)
-
A couple of questions,
I went back and read the whole current thread, have there been any more mysterious attacks by the Sky Martians? Or are we in the beginnings of the "Great Powers" conflict still?
The second building, with the smokestack and three front posts. I see a little area to the side with a fence, no door on the building there though. Where the dude is standing. A trash receptacle area? Was wondering the purpose, maybe I'm putting too much thought into "why" it's there though.....
Great terrain and buildings!
:D

Cheers fellas :)

Not far off and yes to a mine. Eventually...

Depends when we play again and what we do, it flows like water lol
It's just a little storage area as the base was bigger than I intended, I never put too much thought into things. As long as it looks ok it'll do :)
-
The weathering (corrosion/discoloration) on the corrugated tin sheds is wonderfully well done.
-
Wonderful looking stuff! :o
-
It’s a treacle mine! :D
Beauts m8.
;)
-
Did I miss it?
Or maybe its in a previous post? What rules are you using for your Martian campaign? Both for the campaign and tabletop games. Looks like mainly a skirmish set?
-
Thanks again :)
What rules are you using for your Martian campaign? Both for the campaign and tabletop games. Looks like mainly a skirmish set?
We use a modified version of Muskets and Tomahawks for the larger battles and a slightly modified version of Fistful of Lead: Galactic Heroes for the smaller skirmish games.
-
I have M&T, I like that system. Thought you might've been using Gaslight or a mod of it.
I will look into Fistful of Lead.
Thanks!
-
We started with Gaslight years ago but it's a ballache lol
-
I do not have GL, so can't comment on it at all.
Someone over here just recommended a ruleset on Wargame Vault called "For Queen and Planet". It has some supplements too.
Seems like a lot to choose from out here in the 'verse!
:D
-
Great work all around!
Can I come and play on your gaming table?
If so, please send air fare.
-
Built a little defence tower over the weekend waiting for other thing to dry. Still needs some stanchions around the top (in the post) and possibly a bit more shading but it'll do for now.

That ace, just the ticket for a game objective. ;D
-
Yet again you Earthers look down on us locals.
-
Now you need an anti, anti aircraft tower weapon.
-
Another brilliant build James :-*
-
:-* :-*
-
This whole thread is glorious!
Fantastic builds. Inspiring.

Thanks chaps :)

Nah, that’ll be the Sky Martian heavy skiff >:D

Very nice finish on that. Lovely work again!

Out of interest, what mods did you need for M&T?

Very nice watch tower! Are the guns from HLBS?
Also love the colour scheme of the Steam Vehicle.
-
Lovely Stuff :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Where Did The Hatch come from?
-
Very very nice! :-*

Thanks again

Can’t remember, Mark will have to interject as he’s the rules sponge.
Are the guns from HLBS?
They are (great little range) and he’s still doing them. They disappeared from the new website but they’ll be up again at some point.
Where Did The Hatch come from?
It’s a cast from a master I’ve done. I’ve got a few other VSF goodies to finish off then they’ll be released.
I got my stanchions this morning and they’re now in place along with a proper flag :D

;D ;)
It's actually a plastic pint glass ;D
-
Nice work James. How long before one of your nefs crashes into it? lol lol lol
-
Those guns are in a shocking state! You better get a Master Chief in there to crack heads and wire brush that rust away!
-
Yet again you Earthers look down on us locals.
Well, maybe not on the High Martians. I wonder how much those guns elevate? Really not a lot of overhead cover there either. :)
-
It's actually a plastic pint glass ;D
Wise choice there. Much healthier than Pringles, and sturdier to boot.
Lovely work.
-
It's actually a plastic pint glass ;D
I shoulda guessed, I suppose.
Although I would have thought a pint was too small.
Maybe it should be known as a 'short tower'.
;D
-
That is a bit good 8)
Stanchions certainly are the final flourish :-*
Nice hatch and door by the way 8)
-
Thanks gents :)

God, you sound like a broken record ::)

Doesn’t do any good, the Martian atmosphere plays havoc with any metal ;D
I wonder how much those guns elevate? Really not a lot of overhead cover there either. :)
They’ll elevate enough (we don’t use high flight stands lol). Thought about a cover and might still do one but it’s fine for games now :)

;D
Any taller and storage becomes a problem (like it isn’t already lol).
Hopefully something else to show later this week :)
-
AWESOME!
I always love seeing your new projects!
Very inspirational!
-
Bravo on the Defense Tower. Your Mars project goes from strength to strength.
-

Well, it doesn't rain much on Mars anyway. Need to get/convert trooper minis with parasols to keep the sun off, though. :)
-
Thanks again :)
Got a bit of work done on my independent force. Couple more officer types and a small gunboat. Plenty of details to go on the gunboat and of course the lower hull.

I like those James,excellent 8)

My own canvas mix with a blue stripe.

All rather splendid, can't wait for the next big battle on Mars... ;D

Nice start on the force :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Are you hoping for more luck with a new army ???
I have heard your old army was not so lucky :D
Have you based the design on anything in particular

I’m crap at all the games I play, I just fancied something a bit different lol
I believe the image I’m using for inspiration is a French gunboat. Could be wrong though as I just picked it up from google.
Still got the hull and front armour to sort out of course.

I notice lifeboats.
Sounds like a good idea given your record as an Admiral.....
;D :D ;)

That grey works really well. Have you sorted a flag for them yet?

Not yet. Working away at the moment and it’s chewing into my time. Haven’t even got a name for them yet lol
-
Nice start on the gunboat. Nothing like a huge gun on a small hull that overall looks inherently unstable very VSF... :)...
-

Quite :D
Got some paint in the hull. It still needs a flag and it’s iconography. Also the lower is being printed and when it’s done I’ll sort out a photo of them together.

Got the printed hull. Can’t wait to get back and prime it, sand it etc.
I’ve got some of the Halfords filler/primer which should do the job nicely.

-
Very swish. Are you going to have to design a flight stand specifically for that neff type?
-
Thanks :)
Nah, is got a hole in the bottom the same size as my other neffs. Getting the balance right will be a bit tricky though.
-
Nice hull ;)
-
Uber kewl :D
-
Very nice :-* :-* :-*
Didn't realise you were doing 3D printing now as well?
-
Cheers fellas :)
Didn't realise you were doing 3D printing now as well?
Was dealing with it at work for over 15 years and quite a few of my newer products are resin printed. I can do it all by hand, this just saves time :)
-
Nice little rust bucket coming along there :)
-
Awesome Work!!! :o
Any chance of there being kits for sale?
-
Forgot I got most of the hull painted before I came away. The orange is Halfords primer/filler I’m using to smooth out the print lines. It’ll probably be the same red as the upper hull once I’ve added the details to it.

Not of this one as it’s too big but I have been working on and off on a smaller one that will have interchangeable items on it. Dunno when it’ll be ready though.

The guns looks ace. ;D
They do, but I particularly like the crew as the choice of grey as a colour works well for an independent faction.
-
Cheers fellas :)
Whats Kazoo?
It’s the name of the family. William ‘Bill’ Kazoo being the owner. An Australian sheep farmer originally, he’s come to Mars with his extended family to make his mark in the trade opportunities available.

Had a bit of me time over the past few days and got out a dam I started earlier this year (last year? I can't remember). It matches other cliff edges I've got and I'll get those out at some point in the new year and set them up together.
The canal at the bottom is how I'm going to be doing the canals from now on. Some of you may remember that I had canals built into terrain boards (2x2 and about 60mm deep), these are too impractical so I'm going with simple painted ones that can be laid on the table top. This way of doing it will also give more options for different layouts.
The stone work at the top still needs doing of course but the basic arrangement is there.

Grazier is the word you want: as in Australian sheep grazier ;)
Cracking work there Jim(pun not intended) :-*
-
Cheers fellas :)
Grazier is the word you want: as in Australian sheep grazier ;)
I’ve no doubt I’ll be adding to them (as I seem to have a lot of casualties whenever we play) so Grazier is a good name to have :D
-
That’s a damn fine dam 8)
-
What did the fish say when he jumped out of the water and hit a wall?
....Dam
That will make a great piece of terrain or objective.
-
Amazing thread and inspiration! :o
I shall be following it with interest!
-
Thanks chaps :)
Still working on some of the details but I’m pondering about the colour of the water. Either a mid green/brown, a rather dark green/brown or some sort of reddy/brown (either mid or dark) :?
-
Reality (not that it has much of an opinion) would say a reddy-brown/rusty-ish colour to the water, or you could spin the colour wheel and paint it purple. :D
-
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a dam... just kidding, that is rather swell.
-
Thanks :)
Yeah, I think a reddy brown varnished with yacht varnish.
Finished the main build of it, just some joints to fill between the cliffs and block work and the railings on the sticky out platform (they’ll be added when it’s painted).
The bottom two are the rear, it’ll probably make more sense when it’s painted.

All kinds of awesome

Thanks :)

If I get a chance to set something up in the next few days I will do (it all takes up quite a bit of space lol ).
Finished the Independent neff off. The base is a bit too forwards as I didn't check the hole position before the hull got printed. Got some grey clothed crew on the go as well. The pictures are a bit too saturated but I didn't want to spend ages faffing around with the options/settings.

They are the clear blue Tamiya ones that are used for kids projects. I got a load cheap in Japan years ago and still have a few left.

You're nerfs are always inspiring!
They have a look to them that is always appealing to me! :-*

The crane looks great. Useful for Victorian dock sides too.

looking forward to the whole setup pics

It’s just a click away :D

Here's the cliff mine wip. The top building is done and can be used separately. It's got magnets in it to help keep it attached to the tower.
The tower needs a wheel at the top and a balcony at the front (that's what the light grey strip will support).
No room at the moment to do a decent set up with more cliffs and buildings but that will hopefully change in a week or so.

The garden below was started for a Salute game years ago but I never got round to finishing it until this week. The same goes for the bandstand. They didn’t really need much, just plants/pots etc and a second glass house for the garden and steps and a paint job for the bandstand.
I think I’ll do a separate brick wall surrounding the garden with a couple of gated entrances.
The bandstand would probably do for Limehouse as well (I’ve been persuaded to make a park for it ::) ).

:-* :-*
Maybe you could make some removable plants so that you could have alternates for whichever setting you are using it in at the time, reddish for Mars and something more green for Limehouse?
;)
-
Lovely job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
That garden is excellent. It looks like a great layout for Pulp, horror, Victorian or WWII layouts too.

That bandstand is an especially nice design and build

:D
-
Well, those are brilliant. Well done, James :-*
-
Thanks again :)
If there is a suitable Victorian band available then I could be persuaded ::) lol
-
This lot are the right period....
....they could be on tour!
;D
-
The Fast Show's 'Men in Ponchos' "You ain't seen me, right!".
-
Really nice work James :-* :-* I am glad that you dusted it off and put the finishing touches on it. Are you planning to sell or are selling the green houses? God knows that I will pay in endless "comments" from my wife but I am sorely tempted.
-

Er, not quite what I had in mind lol
Are you planning to sell or are selling the green houses? God knows that I will pay in endless "comments" from my wife but I am sorely tempted.
They’re not really worth doing as a catalogue item but drop me a pm and we can take it from there.
-
They are cracking mate! :-* The bandstand is amazing and the garden looks like an old sepia photo!

Most excellent. Is the bandstand something you are flogging in your shop?

Cheers fellas :)
Is the bandstand something you are flogging in your shop?
Not at the moment but it could be a distinct possibility :)

Got the tower mine complete but still no room to sort out a decent set up lol

Yeah, with ice cream and strawberries on top ;D
-
That mine tower is great James.
Have you obtained the Mariachi band for the 'Muchachos on Mars' tour?
-
Thanks gents :)
No band sourced yet but I haven’t really had a good look.
-
That tower is impressive. I like how it actually looks like it works in context. A lot of wargaming terrain (my own included) is probably more 'for effect' rather than looking practical! lol
-
Nice work James :-*
Are you going to do a separate top section with one of your nefs crashed into it? lol
-
nice job looks like miyazaki :-*
-
Cheers fellas :)
Apart from Dave, who knows where the door is...
-
Top work mate
8)I like how it actually looks like it works in context. A lot of wargaming terrain (my own included) is probably more 'for effect' rather than looking practical! lol
This 100%

Awesome work. I think those greenhouses need a couple of Martian carnivorous plants. :)
-
Love the detail of Mars topiary being red rather ghan green.
-
Thanks gents :)
I've got an idea for the Japanese buildings on Mars but I'll have to do a bit more thinking about it first as to how to implement the idea to make it a bit more practical :?
-
Was taking photos of some commission last night and got out my Japanese and British figures. I don’t actually have any tech or flyers for the Brits, I’ll have to do something about that lol
I’ve got some Sikhs away to be painted and I think I’ll do the same with the naval brigade I’ve got (so many figures and really no time to paint them all ::)).

The bigger fraction being all the unpainted shit I’ve got lol

I like to tease lol

Um Um... makes my mouth salivate!
Great collection there!

Simply Beautiful :-*

Clearly the images show you don’t have nearly enough. :D

Beautiful stuff, laddie!

Thank you kindly gents :)

Shush you

Coming along very nicely.

That a very cunning plan.
They cannot be shot down that way!
:D

I've just worked through this entire log and I am blown away. Your work is fantastic and so creative. The Salute game in particular looks fantastic, and has all been saved for inspiration on my own Mars project. I'm waiting on the Eureka Homeguard range for my VBCW/ARBM game, which leads me to wonder whether VSF could be expanded to the 1930's? Hmm... :D
No band sourced yet but I haven’t really had a good look.
Eureka Miniatures have some fantastic band sets in their Civilians and Vignettes (https://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_138) range.
Possibly a tad too late, but I particularly love their 1920s Jazz Band - 8 figure set (https://www.eurekamin.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=12394).

Diesel-punk :D
There's a Russian band that Tusba have done for the Russo-Japanese war and they might work with some head conversions ???

Very nice :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Who makes those?

Lovely little characters 8)

Thanks chaps :)
Who makes those?
Artizan North West Frontier if I remember correctly.

Diesel-punk :D
How did I not know this was a thing?
Man... :o

sweet

Nice -I'm ashamed to say I've missed this whole thread, it's so good! And it's given me loads of ideas of how I could use my old west minis differently. Does your Mars have a frontier?

Always fancied a space western type or using the boer war type figures.
-
Does your Mars have a frontier?
The whole bloody planet is a frontier lol
Apart from the immediate areas around the main centres of habitation :D
-
A right rascally looking pair!

Bet I can guess who secretly fancies himself as 'Softlove'.......

Built a quick semaphore tower after visiting one down the road last week (it was unfortunately boarded up undergoing restoration work). It’s called Chatley Heath and was part of a string of similar towers going through Surrey between the 1820’s and 1840’s (or thereabouts). Mine is a lot simpler though.
Now, not much need for a semaphore in the age of the telegraph, and there are telegraph lines on Mars but they are frequent targets of Sky Martian raids and so a more traditional form of quick communication was needed :)
I haven’t based it as I reckon it can be used for our eventualBattle of Dorking/Invasion England campaign when it eventually gets off the ground.

nice like the new hatch as well :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Fun build with some nice elements :-*
-
This has to be one of my favorite builds of yours (so far ;) )
Have you thought of doing a couple of interchangeable signals ? Such as the Murry system or the Chappe ?
Just so you can give it a quick tweak for different nationalities ?
Or even a small solar boiler?
(Admittedly I'd love to see you add a Murry system. As I think it'd round off the whole build by drawing your eye to the conversation between the white framed windows and the Murry system.)
-
That looks ace! 8)
-
Thanks chaps :)

Chappe is too early really and I considered the Murray but it needed to be done in one way or another otherwise it would be sat languishing for god know how long before being finished lol
As I mentioned, it's also going to be used for our England Invaded games so not that bothered about it being used for other nations.
-
Managed to pretty much finish the torpedo neff after it’s been sat languishing unfinished for years lol
The rear turret needs raising a bit so it’ll clear the aerofoils and I’m waiting for the stanchions for the top platform (had to order loads for another job). Hopefully will get to prime it tomorrow and take some better pictures.

A couple of years ago he said he was! :D
James, this is absolutely a wonderful thread to go through and see all the marvels you have put together. I'm sure the neff will come out looking fantastic. Your neff's are always amazing.
:-* :-*

Looking good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Jolly good bit of kit!
:)

Thanks chaps :)

Ray is correct :D
Can’t find it at the moment although I haven’t looked everywhere yet ::) lol
-
That's really cool. I know it's a scratch build but it's so much better looking than those MDF kits I've seen.
-
Thanks :)
I’ve been working on an armoured traction engine to go in the webshop for a while now and the main engine is ready. I’ve also built a caisson and slightly altered (what I think is) a WWI gun. The wheels will be in the webshop soon as well (but not the gun or the caisson).
I’ll be doing carriages and other stuff for it to pull and these will go in the webshop as and when :)
It’s not intended to be a real world traction engine, it’s purely for VSF (hence the same sized wheels plus a few other things).

Nevermind, I am blind sometimes

Thanks fellas :)
I want, but don't need , one now!!! What's your website? lol
lol
It’ll be a couple of days before it’s in (need to get a bit of stock sorted and edit the photos first).
-
Pretty much finished off the carriage for the steam engine but the hook and eye still need a bit of work to get them at the right level before it can go in the webshop.
It holds ten figures on 25mm bases but of course normal pedestal guns can be put in there or even something a bit more substantial >:D
I've got a little cupola on the go that'll raise the crane over the edge (and it can be used for other reasons of course) or even house a turret.

Aiming for release a week on Monday :)

That's jolly nice indeed. works a treat, especially as a troop carrier. :)
-
Cheers :)
I think I can do a canopy for the troop carrier fairly easily which would help stave off the Martian sun :D
-
And Sky Martian attacks ;D
-
Not if it’s made from canvas lol
Maybe some protective bunting would help :D
-
Very nice :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Fits your setting perfectly

Thanks :)
Got another little bit done. A set of buffer stops for the railway. They can be removed if necessary.

Like it a lot :-* :-*
-
Brilliant work yet again mate. The weathering is outstanding. I am not sure about the effective field of fire for that rear Gatling though.
-
Cracking job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Must be a fair sized fleet by now? time for a group shot?
-
Many thanks chaps :)
I am not sure about the effective field of fire for that rear Gatling though.
It needs a cupola doing but it’ll be a generic one that will go in the webshop and it’s not done yet.
Must be a fair sized fleet by now? time for a group shot?
My tables got about 15 German buildings on it at the moment and I’ll need to get some of them done to make the space lol

Looking good mate! I am finding it increasingly difficult to resist the temptation of these neffs.
-
Those figures look great! Where did you get the bases? I’ve been using ones from 4Ground which work fine but yours are thinner and lighter in color, which would look better on my decks.
-
Thanks :)
0.8mm veneer on 1mm bases. Drop me a pm if you’re interested.

Started on a heliograph station to back up the semaphore and telegraph lol
It's going to have a large set of mirrors as the intention is for it to signal any aether ships in low orbit. Debating whether to give it it's own light source or not :?
It's not got a base like the semahpore station as it will make for a good objective in the desert. I'll have to finish off the small mesa that they can both sit on.

Yeah, I'll be keeping the heliograph separate so the tower can used for other stuff :)

The red is just fortunate happenstance with the materials at hand ;)

:o VERY nice

Very cool! I particularly like the stone coursing to the base.
-
Up to your usual high standards. Very Nice.
-
Cheers fellas :)
Might get the actual heliograph itself done this week. Fingers crossed lol
-
lovely as always!
-
I thought it was high time to tart up some of the existing pieces from this project and try and get them to the same standard as some of the newer ones.
First off is the signal station on the viaduct. It's been sat in the garage for several years now exposed to all the crap dust etc that's been in there. It needs a bit of a clean lol
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/52/2619-160821094035-52464757.jpeg)
Also, the signal box got damaged (forgot to take a photo of that). Two walls had come off along with the windows and railings for the exterior platform. I've reinforced the walls, but back the windows and added some interior details that were always going to be there but just never happened.
I also need to finish off the rails for the curve and add something to the large, blank wall to make it a bit more interesting.

The top part of the box will remain removable as I'm going to use it (with a new bottom piece) for my Dorking project.
-
Love all the inside detail, in the signal box :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Nice to see you back at this
-
VSF!
Time for a game then?! ;D
-
Chooo!
That's a lot of levers for just one track point.... what else are they controlling from that signal station, eh?
Careful lads, there could be some mad science afoot.
: 3
-
beautiful model making, and I really like the "abandoned" track. I t looks like a lot of rationalisation has taken place.
Chooo!

Careful lads, there could be some mad science afoot.
: 3
Especially as that single point has been lifted, so there's no need for any levers at all... I also find it highly suspicious that the signal box has a brick pillar extending to ground level...
-
Thanks chaps :)
Nothing so nefarious going on here…
Or is there >:D
Honestly, it looked better with several points rather than just one lol
This section of rail isn’t abandoned as I’ve got some wooden trestles for it to join onto at some point :)
-
Lovely work 8)
-
Beautiful as usual! I'd LOVE to see another of your large dioramas!
-
Thanks :)
If the weather holds for the next week or two I should be able to put a game on in the garden :)
-
Lovely work mate :-* :-* :-*
-
Good to see you back on the sci-fi, mate.
:D
-
Silly boy lol
-
Well typically I didn't get round to cleaning the viaduct section up but I did start to rebase some of the existing pieces that needed smaller and less square bases. First off is an anti-neff tower.
It was made from a plastic pint glass, a suitable 'ring' on top and some quick firers from HLBSC.

That looks great. You’ve very effectively disguised the base components.
-
Very nice, Jimbo! :-*
You have by far some of the best VSF terrain and models I have ever seen.
-
Good work… clearly no other use for a plastic pint glass after all ;) 8)
-
Thanks chaps :)

I’ve been allowed proper glass ones now lol

Loving it! 👍

Nicely done - hadn’t realised it was a pint glass

Stunning work on disguising that monstrosity.

Awesome! I absolutely love it!

A thing of beauty.

Cheers again fellas :)
Next one should be done today or tomorrow.

I got the neff traffic control tower re-based as well (honestly no idea why I did the original as square o_o )

Very nice James :-* I quite like the staircase.

The top piece is much favourite, it very much has a Victorian seaside resort feel.

Agree with that. Very much ‘end of the pier’ vibe

Brilliant!

It does indeed!
None of that health and safety malarkey either...
;)

Even nicier than the previous one. :D :-* :-*

Thanks chaps :)

None of the H&S rubbish for Victorian heroes!

I believe this is a smaller version of the one seen at the end of the pier at the Martian seaside resort New Brighton favoured by the Earther residents for its dust free environment and milder climate.

Thanks chaps :)

How else are Nick's Heroines going to get thrown off of balconies?

That is so good I think I need to nick it :D.... just hope mine will look half as good!!!

Beautiful, and the staircase is truly inspired. Thanks as always for sharing.

Yeah, I still have half a set of drawings for a pier coming off the walls of New Victoria…
-
Absolutely fantastic! :o Brilliant work! Phenomenal concept beautifully executed! Bravo sir!
-
This is excellent! Well done. What material do you use for your bases?
-
Lovely piece :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Been a long time since we have seen the whole set up?
-
Cheers :)
What material do you use for your bases?
Generally 3mm white faced hardboard but sometimes for smaller elements either 2mm acrylic or 2mm mdf.
Been a long time since we have seen the whole set up?
Yeah, I've only got room for a 4x4 but I can get a 6x4 outside when the weather is nice (bloody raining today lol )
-
Wow, James! :o
Absolutely architecture par excellence!
-
Lovely really lovely.
Pete

Thanks :)
Some flora and fauna for a change this time. Martian baobab trees and Martian termites :D
The termites are just grains of rice with a little black dot for the head. They'll probably act as a small swarm in game terms. Not very lethal but annoying nonetheless >:D

It's funny how effective simple (mostly) unpainted grains of rice are!
-
Excellent! Very thematic!
-
Love the trees James - very exotic!
-
Loving it mate!
As an aside, great battle honors on that flag.
-
Really like these
The swarms vs the red coats made me smile (and that was before I knew what they were made from)

Lovely :-*
The ‘neff post would look good inside an Endoor sort of forest… ;D

love the trees and termites

Many thanks chaps :)

Simple and effective. Very well done. :-* :-* :-*

Great idea! Might have to borrow it in the future.
-
They turned out very well. The rice is definitely an effective way of doing the giant flesh eating termites.
-
You wouldn’t want to wait till you could see the whites of the termites eyes lol

Not bad. ;)

Cheers fellas :)

brilliant.

Thanks.
I've made a start on tarting up the City Martian buildings I've got as a couple were damaged in the move and some are missing details. The first off is a simple store house, larger ones to follow.

Hope to get the second one tarted up this week.

In anticipation of starting to play TMWWBK and realising that we don’t have that many Sky Martians I’ve added a few to an existing clan; The Kaas Ak Thaal. The Head Takers although Von Stypher Dycks translation has it as The Takers of Heads and given that Von Stypher Dyck is the final call for most things Martians that’s what we’ll call them :)

The armour looks great ;D
I will look forward to gunning them down >:D

Looking good, mate.

I look forward to them slicing the Alien invaders into very small and tasty morsels.
:D
-
Fantastic as usual Jim! I only have a few of your figures, but they are some of my absolute favorite Martians.
-
Nice work - am also intrigued to hear how TMWWBK plays out on Mars (like Zulu land?)

Thanks chaps :)

We'll be recycling the units as we don't have enough yet but hopefully it won't get that far >:D

8) Recycling is good

Nice :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Very cool James. I like their armour a lot.
Looking forward to this - it's been some time since you and Nick duked it out on the red sand!
-
They look brilliant! Looking forward to seeing them in action!
Uzuuuu (or whatever they scream on Mars).

Cheers fellas :)

Me too lol
Hopefully next week (fingers crossed).

According to Von Stypher Dyck it’s apparently a loud, dry hissing sound that mimics the winds in the canyons. This is debatable however as no-one has really been left alive to report as such >:D

This is so true. Professor Ebenezer Von Stypher-Dyke appears to be the only man alive who has ever heard the sound. In his 1891 Volume "My travels on Mars" he recalls vividly how the Sky Martians would mimic the sound of the winds and when they made their war cry and it was like nothing he had ever heard before or since.
"I pity the poor fellow on the receiving end of the Sky Martian attack" He wrote. "The war cry such as it was he believed would disorientate the target and leave them in a fearful state unable to properly defend themselves. "Several times I witnessed my Sky Martian friends swoop from the skies on their fast moving skiffs and just before making contact with their enemy they would in unison let out this piercing sound, a high pitched hissing whistling noise, almost deafening to my Earther ears. It would leave me disorientated and giddy for a minute or so".
It appears with each Sky Martian clan there would be a slight variation on the tone and delivery of the war cry, but in each case the result would be the same, chilling to the bone!

You know you need to make up rules to reflect this now, dont you?
:D

Already talking about it ;)

Finished repairing and tarting up a City Martian watchtower and signal beacon. Didn't need much fortunately :)
The beacon was originally stuck in the top of the tower but it was a bit unwieldy and prone to damage so I did a separate base for it.

Makes a lot of sense to separate the beacon. It’s also a nice piece on its own.
-
Stealing some kids marbles for your terrain. Shocking!!!
And you finished a tower :-* :? :? :-* :-* :-*
-
I do like your style of Martian buildings.
-
Thanks chaps :)

No kids so the toys are all mine >:D
Yeah, just the one tower. There’s another one somewhere just waiting for some love lol
-
Huzzah for being a kid with an adult's income!
-
Great pieces of terrain. Fairly simple yet very effective. Love the marble signal light in particular.
I may have missed something, apologies if so, but who makes the figures?
-
GreT stuff. I enjoyed slaughtering, sorry subduing your Martians yesterday and will enjoy burning the watchtower. :D
-
Cheers again :)

You'll never get anywhere near it >:D
-

As Oshiro modelterrain says, they're his own martians and simply the best around IMHO
-
Thanks for telling us about those Martians. They look fantastic. I wish they would make more.
Dan

I wish they would make more.
I agree.

Lovely work. The shape of the watchtower is very pleasing.

Nice watchtower. :-*

There are more in the works.

Thanks :)

I’ve had the bits for these for a few years now and rediscovered them whilst looking for something else lol
Neff cradle and loading platform. Fairly simple, mainly to get them finished but also to help keep damage to a minimum. I’ve got parts for a second cradle which would suit when we play around New Victoria etc.

-
very nice indeed
-
Ooh, aah! Very nice addition to the tabletop.
-
Great bit of terrain!
-
Brilliant idea and lovely execution.
-
Many thanks chaps :)
In my haste to set up the photos I didn't put the neff turret down properly; maybe it's in for repair :?
Also need to tart up the older terrain pieces as they're fading somewhat lol
-
Truly inspirational. Thank you for sharing. I always wondered how the blasted things took off and landed.
-
That looks awesome! Once again the total is greater than the sum of the parts. Everything works so well together in those photos. I have to keep reminding myself I really can not start yet another genre… and you are making that very difficult! 👍
-
Aah that should work nicely for as an objective or just a way to get that great ship on the table even if its not an actor in the conflict.
-
Lovely piece of construction
-
Simple idea, skillfully executed. :-*
-
Cheers fellas, greatly appreciated :)
I always wondered how the blasted things took off and landed.
Me too for a long time lol

Just do it :D

More fantastic modeling from the hands of a master! Well done sir! Inspirational!
-
Great piece of terrain :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
wonderful.
-
Very nicely done 8) Looks very effective and keeps the 'nef safe too.
I take it the rests are made from real cork pieces?
-
Makes me wonder...do the Martians have an equivalent?
-
Thanks again :)
I take it the rests are made from real cork pieces?
Nope, just balsa wood cut to length.
Makes me wonder...do the Martians have an equivalent?
Eventually lol
-
Good...good...
You must have half a world of terrain now, I bet it makes for a damn impressive set up.
-
It’s getting quite extensive lol
-
Acracking idea, mate.
Makes a very nice alternative piece of scenery.
Love it!
:-* :-*
You will need rules for crash landings given your history!
:D
-
Wonderful Jim :-*. Or should that be wonderful work Jim lol
The real world parallel to the ‘ neff cradle would be beaching gear for a seaplane , very clever engineering, I love it when fantasy collides with the real world.
-
You will need rules for crash landings given your history!
:D
Nah, I’ll just build new ones ;D
I love it when fantasy collides with the real world.
Some of the structures I’ve got are on the large side but I’m trying to keep them ‘real’ to make it ‘believable’ as possible :)
