Well i will take the plunge & propose to build one of these:
I have started the plans (attached below on A3 scaled to 1:56)
Keith :?

The Aliens APC was a modified version of this I believe, well the version of this with the full width cab.

Found one

That's pretty cool, and I can't wait to see the end product. But it sure looks strange in the front and back views. Those sponsons stick out so far that if too many crew members were on one side, it looks like the tank would tip over!
-
Hi Mancha
I don't think it would have tipped over as it was supposed to weigh 150 tons :o :o :o probably sank into the mud though lol lol lol

Here's another plan with the crew marked on
(http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p176/aircav_album/ww1%20Central%20powers/kwagen_plan.jpg)
Keith :?
-
Wow, that's a lot of crew!
-
Landpanzerschiffe for the win! :)
Looking forward to seeing that come through. I had done some cardboard templates for a K-Wagen some years ago, but before I could actually start work, I a) somehow got out of WW1 gaming and b) realized how many rivets I would have to cut and glue for that beastie...
-
I've harboured an idle fantasy of owning one of these for a while. You can get kits in 1/72 and 1/35 (see below), but as far as I know, nobody makes one that would go with 28mm figures. So I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Good luck!
-
I count 25 crew positions in that diagram! :o
Kolossal indeed. Looking forward to seeing this progress!
-
Landpanzerschiffe for the win! :)
No pressure then :D :D :D
Keith :?

What a great project. Are you going to use it with your WW1 figures ;)
cheers

I will probably use it for weird war1. :D
Well i have started cutting plasticard up :o :o :o

Love the project, Keith.
This is one of the vehicles I've -dreamed- about having available with my company, but I'm terrified of the thought of the cost of all that resin... this would be one expensive model, I suspect! Good to see somebody scratchbuilding it.
-Alex
-
God I would hate to be a crew member on that thaing, permanet hearing damage.
-
Good luck Keith with this project.

This is what i've done so far:
I found some more pictures on the landships forum so i have a better idea of wht the front would have looked like

A quick update photo

Inner hull section with an Artizan figure for scale
Keith :?
-
Please don't mention rivets Steve i'm worried enough about cutting the riduclously large sponson's never mind putting rivets on everything :(
Its dgoing to drive me mad ;D
Keith :?
-
great looking project..are you going to do internal detailing as well with a lift -off top?!
this looks to be about twice the size of the AZ7.
can't wait to see how this turns out.
-
this is taking shape really well Keith ;) looks huge!!

Hi no sorry there will be no internal details, i'v got enough on with all the rivets. :?

Cheers Andy, download the PDF Cad plans and you can see the size.
Keith :?

looking better and better all the time ;) , I'm interested to know what method your using for your rivets? I've tried 3, all work but none are entirely satisfactory.
-
I'm interested to know what method your using for your rivets?
So am I lol
I've not quite worked out what to do yet i'm thinking i will probably stretch some sprue out and cut them to size & position every one individually with a spot of liquid poly over the top, its going to be a long job though :-[
Keith :?
-
the 3 options I've tried are:
1: PVA glue drops from a syringe I used that on my Mendeleev, it does work and its quite easy to do but results are a little inconsistent
2: Use pin vice to pre-drill holes in the plastic then glue plastic rod into the holes then trim off to the required size, I used brass rod on my first Junowicz but it was too thick and difficult to file down. The plastic is working much better, it is time consuming though...
3. I bought a riveting tool which is basically a spiked wheel which you press into the reverse of the plastic, its designed for aircraft modellers and only makes an impression on very thin plastic sheet. I had thought of building in thicker sheet then 'cladding' with the thin riveted sheets but decided the rivets were too small anyway.
-
Looking great so far AC.
Rivets.
4. what I did with my TB4. Roll very thin sausages of green stuff and slice into rivets when set.
5. Use a rivet punch (JimBibbly very kindly gave me one at the weekend, thoroughly decent chap that he is)
Greenstuff is far quicker but the punch gives uniform size AND thickness.
RayRivers used white metal spears IRC.
-
I have an option 5, i've ordered some Tinchy rivets from the US:
http://www.tichytraingroup.com/index.php?page=view_category.php&category=NBW+%26+Rivets&offset=0
I haven't managed to find a UK supplier for these, I've seen some rivets on Antenociti's workshop but they are bigger & out of stock!
I have cut the sponson upper & lower sections, cut down the observation turret as i felt that it was too high & marked & drilled the cut outs.
Keith :?
-
I seen the rivets on Antenociti's workshop but as you say they were out of stock I didnt look any further I'm afraid, I'll be interested to see how you get on, they looked as if they were going to be quite fiddlely to fit.
-
has anyone tried needle pins, cut to size and inserted into predrilled holes?
-
has anyone tried needle pins, cut to size and inserted into predrilled holes?
I'd thought about that, but decided that the heads are too big (& knowing me i would probably lose an eye clipping off all the pointed ends lol)
Andy: I will post some photo's as soon as i receive them.
Keith :?
-
I mean the metal heads, not the plastic/glass ones
if You stick the pins into kneadite or a cork, hold the head with narrow pliers and then clip it off, nothing can happen ;)
keep a magnet nearby to avoid mishaps
then put down the clipper, apply the glue, and stick in the head remain (which You comfortably already have in Your other hand in the right position)
I've done this to replace pivots on a regular basis (I like moving parts that do not break off), but never as a decoration technique so I was curious how it might look, cause I've seen many rivets that look rather gigantic
-
Hi
Yes i know what you mean, but the only ones that i have seen are over 1mm in diameter which i think is a bit big really.
Keith :?
-
ahh, sorry
seems You are even more peculiar about rivet size than I am.... :)
-
New update picture with sponson upper & lower sections in place, observation turret added:
i will try to get the tracks added tonight, i have a lot of spares from a Chimera kit there not historically acurate, but theres no way i'm making a load of tracks!
Keith :?
-
looks very good so far, no problems with chimera tracks
-
looks great :) I can see the rivets marked off what sort of spaceing are you using?
-
looks great :) I can see the rivets marked off what sort of spaceing are you using?
3mm spacing, don't know if i'm happy with it though :?
-
3mm is what I've used on the Junowicz mk 2. How many plates are you going to make the roof into? I notice the rivets are just marked round the edge at the moment.
-
Its in 2 sections, if you look carefully you can just see it on the top behind the turret
-
Thanks, I seen the 2 sections, I was actually meaning how are you breaking up these 2 sections with rivets, are you spliting it down the centreline so that it looks like its made of 4 plates or even more?
-
I was just going to leave it as is, thats how it is on this picture:
Keith
-
looking real good can't wait to see this one completed
-
You can get kits in 1/72 and 1/35
Where from ?
-
Where from ?
Kora make both 1/72 and 1/35 versions in resin and PE. Czech company I believe.
http://www.modelimex.com/detail/kora-model-cz/afv-resin/1-35-k-wagen-german-giant-tank-wwi
The part photos on that site might be helpfil in terms of rivet spacing and detail.
-
I've not done much over the weekend. I sanded all the rivet makings off as i was not happy with the spacing :?
The sponson side panels are cut to size with all the holes cut in, i need to build the 77mm guns & mounts now, but i can't seem to find any 17-18mm OD plastic tube (i have some 20mm sneakily cut off my daughters Hannah Montanah play microphone :-X) for the gun shields, or any 2.5mm microstrip with a reasonable p&p i don't like the idea of spending more on postage than buying the original product!
Keith :?
-
Here's an update. i've made all the 77mm guns & fitted the sponsons.
There's some filling to do and then the the exhausts to be made & all the grilles & riveting to be done :?
Keith :?
-
looks fantastic Keith where can I order 1? :) Where did you buy your HMGS? and how did you do the taper on the 77mm guns?
-
this model is really worth casting
-
Cheers Andy.
The Hmg's are from North Star of the Great War Miniatures A7V, I contacted Nick & he very Kindly sold me some.
The tapers on the guns were made by clamping a mini drill in a vice and putting a 35mm length of plastic rod in the chuck and using a new stanley knife blade gentley to turn down the rod to the desired shape. :D

very nicely done a home made lathe :)

Looking superb. so glad you didnt type "JUST the grills and riveting"
-
Thanks guys. :D
Keith :?

WOW great stuff. :-* :-*
Good luck with the rivets. ;D
Any chance of a picture next to some figures to get an idea of the final size.

Thanks,
I'll need it as you may be able to tell i've been putting the rivet detailing off :?
I will take a picture to night next to a MKIV and some miniatures :D
Keith :?
-
Keith, that's fabulous so far! I'm sure you will manage the riveting just as good!
:-*
-
Here's some size comparison pictures:

I've started doing the rivet detail using Beading (graining) tools & green stuff.
Here's a close up of the front glacis plate.
I did about 80 last night only about another 500 to go :(
Keith :?
-
WOW looking good :-*
The rivets look great, just like the real thing.
But I don't have the patience to do it that way. Good luck.
-
looks great :) would be interested to to find out more about your riveting technique it looks very effective :)
-
Hi andy I've used a jewelers beading tool, which is like a little punch with an inverse dome in the end.
Here's a link to the page in the Osprey Panzer modeling page with them being used:
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=RAEdxELgzy0C&pg=PA27&lpg=PA27&dq=Beading+Tools+(Grainers)&source=bl&ots=w5Mn8jPdEr&sig=yc6LX_88tP4lJEDBpwq7x141vZw&hl=en&ei=YNH7StOANY3SjAfWqZSPBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBUQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Beading%20Tools%20(Grainers)&f=false
What i have done though is roll out green stuff into a sausage & cut off a bit and stick it where i want the rivet head push in the grainer remove the excess & your left with a little rivet.
I bought a few grainers from Shesto at 40p each though you do need to spend £10 (post free) they do sell lots of other stuff though.

thanks for that,
hmm.. I wonder if they'll work on plastic rod ;)
-

No problem.
I don't know wether they would, I found it a pain to use on plasticard :D

Here's another update photo:
All the top plate details have now been done, just lots & lots more riveting detailing to do :-[
Keith :?
-
looks the business :) have you any thoughts of colours schemes yet?
-
I'm going to use the late war cam scheme similar to the one i used on the MKIV tank, but with black lines seperating the patterns & white squares with balkan crosses in for makings, & probably a skull & crossbones on the front.
-
I may have said it before but this just keeps getting better and better with every post. I am really looking forward to seeing it with paint as that blue front has thrown my eye quite a bit.
-
Smashing project, Keith, I just hope you will stand that continuous riveting which I know is a pain in the ...
:)

Thank you, thats high praise indeed coming from someone of your talents :D
The rivetings not too bad really, as i have to stop after a while, other wise i end up squashing all the rivets handling the tank :D
Keith :?

Looking great. Can't wait to see it undercoated and then fully painted. :-*
-
Lovely work Keith, it's absolutely gorgeous.

Other than that IT'S DONE :D :D :D
Keith :?
-
Tidy :-* :-* ;)
-
Think you have done a great job with a difficult subject. (Curvy stuff ain't easy to do.)
Really looking forward to see it painted!
-
Really, really nice Keith.
Balanced curves are so difficult to achieve but yours look spot on.
Great rivetting too! (doing it must have been, er, rivetting....)
:D
-
(Curvy stuff ain't easy to do.)
ditto that :) as I said on the scarabminiatures forum its looking great the riveting is really well done and will set the model off brilliantly :) I think I'll try your rivetting method on my next build ;)

"rivetting" that was really bad :'(
But I have to agree with everything said. :D

Now thats bad, even as far as LAF puns go Steve :D
Thanks to all the encourage ment during this build, it has been greatly appreciated :D

I'm about 90% finished painting now:
The Balken crosses were made at home with decal paper & put on a white back ground.
-
wonderfull
didn't know these kinds of crosses were used too
no finished posting before entry!
-
Stonking job Aircav. My first thought was that it does not look like a scratchbuild at all and is surely a kit. I love the way you have melded the front cross with the rivets.
-
Top Show Aircav!

Great paint job :o

Looking good so far :-*
Cracking paint job. The rust/dirt looks very realistic.

:o That is a a heck of a paint job - looks so .... er .... real. :-*
-
Outstanding work.

Wow!! Looks Great!! :o :o
-
Totally Queeg-worthy! :-* :-* :-* :-*
Beautiful weathering and a top-notch build. Totally a show-stopper.

Realistic? Not really. They never got a chance to get rusty or muddy.
To accurately portray the K-Wagen project Aircav should have tried to build two, but fail to finish either before the competition ended, and then have the eventual winner come round to his house and pull them to bits once the contest was over.
I'm kidding! I absolutely love this. Very, very well done Mr. Aircav. :)

Just thought i should add a finished picture to this thread for the sake of completeness
(http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p176/aircav_album/ww1%20Central%20powers/side.jpg)

Wow!!! :o
Now make more for the rest of us! lol

*sigh* It's just so damn nice to come back to this thread.
Thanks for the 'completeness'.
Have you gamed with it yet? ;)

Hi, sorry for not replying earlier.
Yes we used it at the Scarab gaming day, using WTGW rules.
Classing it as a MKV* with no troop carrying capabilities & using the breakdown table.
It gave the Brits a shock :D
-
Hi there
That is one excellent model , I have downloaded the plans [ thanks muchly for posting them ] and intend to do them no justice at all sometime in the new year :D
What about some English competition for it ? on the model battlefield ?
http://ww1artwork.jexiste.fr/Files/1-Vehicles/Allies/UK/UK.htm (http://ww1artwork.jexiste.fr/Files/1-Vehicles/Allies/UK/UK.htm)
Look at Super Heavy tanks , we English could be just as barking as the Germans however we never had the money to try the ideas out ?
regards Paul
-
Great link, thanks!
-
Hi there
Well I have started mine and added some stuff to show scale.
Figure on left is a Matchbox American so 1/76 scale
Tank is a cheap T34 kit also 1/76
Figure to right is 28mm or about 1/56 scale , that is the scale of the tank.
The front is on the left !
It is made from some free cardboard , picture mounting card [ about 1mm ] and maybe Bristol board [ about 1.5mm ] I could not justify using styrene for such a folly !
Aircav hope you don't mind we adding to this thread ?
Thanks for the drawings Paul
-
Hi all
Ok busy picture the Hull is at the back you can see where I have done a little filling [ the grey stuff ] it is sat on the outer of a coffee cup corrugated cardboard heat shield that has been cut up to provide the tracks they can be seen in front.
The sponson are awaiting the Guns of which 4 can be seen having their tops & bottoms capped before being glued into place , there is also the cupola the white circle in the middle under one of the tracks.
Roll on the Xmas holiday when I can get back to it.
regards Paul
-
As aircav's build was part of a comp, wouldn't it make sense for this new build to be in its own thread? :?
-
Hi all
Well really I was just showing Aircav that his plans were gratefully received and being used and that I hope it can be built in a low tech/cost way ?
regards Paul
-
i started on mine
-
updait

Please start a new thread in the Workbench for your project as this was an old competition entry.
cheers
