I thought some of you might be interested in this, the first base of musketeers for my TYW Swedish Yellow Regiment. Conversions are by Brian Rigelsford and painting is by Andrew Taylor, who also took the photo.
-
Grand :)
-
Excellent Paul :-* :-* :-*
You know how highly I think of this collection; it's great to see it expanding into the "land of ice and snow". 8)
Very much looking forward to seeing the regiment as it develops and especially when complete :)
(Kudos to Andrew for doing such a great paint job too :-* )
-
Lovely conversions and painting!
-
Wow! Great work! What is the make of the original miniatures? Redoubt?
-
I’m very impressed 8)
-
Many thanks, everyone, for the kind comments.
Bo: I know that the crouching figure in the middle is a Warlord Swede, with the head from a TAG Dutch pikeman (with the plume removed). All the figures have similar heads. Apart from that I'm afraid I don't know where the figures came from. Knowing Brian, it will have been a torso from one manufacturer, legs from another, shoes from another etc.
-
Those are very nice.
-
Quite amazing conversion work! :-* I think I can spot some kneeling Redoubt ACW legs ;)
-
Bo: if you can spot where the legs came from, then it can't be that good :D. Our aim was to come up with figures which looked like the illustration of the Yellow Regiment at Lutzen in the Osprey book.
-
Great start on that objective. Really looking forward to see more of this amazing project ;)
-
Those are fabulous, Paul :)
How big are you planning the unit?
-
A marvellous vignette :-*
-
Many thanks for the kind comments.
Andy: I think just short of 60 figures, including a mounted officer. They're all with Andrew but, to meet my budget, he'll only paint a handful each month. This is the first month's group.
In all, I'm planning 2 Swedish infantry units (one being the Yellow Regiment) and a single cavalry unit. The other Protestants will be German allies. Brian is currently working on the second Swedish infantry unit and a German Protestant infantry unit. He's also working on some (more) Imperialist cuirassiers.
-
Here are some additions. Again, the conversions are by Brian Rigelsford and the painting is by Andrew Taylor.
-
Gorgeous! :-* :-* :-*
-
Absolutely stunning Paul :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
A unit, though I'm assuming is only partially done, to be proud of already 8)
-
Great paintjob!
-
Many thanks. As some of you know, generally I prefer my figures to be in casual poses. This is my first unit in combat poses - mainly because I decided that the salvo was just so Swedish.

"Höstlig morgon grå och mulen
Gryr på Lützens hed,
Som då Lejonet af Norden
Sista gången stred.
Solen, blek, af dimman svepes
In i mantelns flik --
Segerhjälten, som ur slaget
Bäres bort som lik.
Träden omkring minnesstenen
Fälla vissna blad
Tätt som gula gardet täckte
Fältherrns lägerstad."
Excerp from Carl Snoilsky's poem "Autumn day at Schwedenstein"
Rough translation
'On an autumn morning, gray and somber,
Dawns upon Lützen's heath,
Where once the Lion of the North,
For the final time, faced death.
The sun, pale, by mist enveloped,
Cloaked within its shroud,
The victor-hero, from the battle,
Carried away as if in death's crowd.
The trees around the memorial stone,
Shed withered leaves so fair,
As tightly as the Yellow Guard covered,
The field marshal's camp with care.'
-
This brings to my mind my at the time much caressed copy of "Gula Brigadens Hjältar" by Nils Hyden. I doubt it has been translated to English. Perhaps it is just as well, as I am not sure it has stood up to the tooth of time. Also, it is a shameless case of plagiarism, as much content is nicked from 'The Three Musketeers' by Dumas.
Still, loved it as a boy.
-
Lovely figures.
I’ve always wondered what happened to Brian, he was such a nice guy, but dropped off the face the hobby…
-
Brian seemed to drop out of the hobby for a few years, but his interest was rekindled by the first Bloody Miniatures release of figures and he's back converting figures.
-
Lovely tones in the painting and great composition in the basing.
-
Many thanks for the kind comments.

One day Paul, I fancy myself popping down, just gawp, open mouthed in amazement at your TYW collection; which for those who don't know, I have been following with great interest since the heady days of The Steve Dean Forum. One of the best collections from any era I have seen.
-
Darrell: that's incredibly kind of you. Many thanks. You'd be very welcome.
For those of you who don't know, I've been collecting TYW figures for about 15 years now, having previously collected Dark Ages figures. I came across Phil Olley's wonderful TYW collection on the web, a collection which contains many conversions by Brian Rigelsford. Phil kindly gave me Brian's contact details, and my collection got started. It has two basic principles: almost every figure is different; and almost all the figures are in casual poses. I have the figures painted professionally (I'd spoil them if I painted them myself), so the collection only grows slowly but it keeps me happy.
-
Darrell: that's incredibly kind of you. Many thanks. You'd be very welcome.
One day mon ami! I just wish you lived in the NE! LOL
-
I'd think about coming back, Darrell, but my wife wouldn't put up with the weather. The weather in the NE had already become a standing joke in our household. Then we went walking in Alnwick Great Park (Hulne Priory etc) and as we finished the walk it started to snow. And that was in May.

lol The resignation everyone seems to have up here, to the grey skies, rain and cold is something to behold as I'm sure you know lol
It makes me giggle from time to time. :)
-
Absolutely stunning! I can just imagine that officer saying something along the lines of "You 'orrible little man!" to the rear ranker.
-
That's very kind. Many thanks.
-
Wondeful stuff.
-
Many thanks.

Pretty sure that "You 'orrible little man!" is copyrighted to senior NCOs and completely off-limits to "hofficers".
I was going to go with "Have you been injured in an accident at work that wasn't your fault.....?"
(That's a reference to a well-known ambulance-chaser ad on British TV, for the benefit of foreigners.)
-
Here are two more bases. Again, the conversions are by Brian and the painting and the photo are by Andrew.
-
Great, the army is growing! The look fantastic!
-
Many thanks, Bo. I must say we're finding it really quite difficult to come up with Swedes which look the way we want them to look and which are the same size as the rest of my collection. For this reason we're only planning on two units of infantry equipped by the Swedish Crown and the rest of the Protestant infantry will comprise mercenary German units.
-
More wonderful addition to what I'm sure is going to be a somewhat mind blowing unit when complete.
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Brilliant work from Brian and Andrew too 8)
-
Thanks Darrell. Andrew will be going cross-eyed with all the yellow he's being asked to paint.

Fabulous block of shot :) .
Love the yellow and the three rank formation - looks great.
-
Thanks, Andy.
-
Enjoying seeing the Yellow Regiment growing. Brian's conversions are always a thing of beauty.

Many thanks, Galloping Major. Brian's conversions are really special. He's working on another Swedish unit for me, and no doubt I'll post pictures in due course, although there are quite a few bases of the Yellow Regiment to post yet.

Here are a few more figures. Again, the conversions are by Brian and the painting and the photo are by Andrew. The flag is a cloth flag from Maverick Models.
-
Great additions! :-* :-* :-*
-
Bo: that's very kind. Many thanks.
-
They look great 8)
-
James: much appreciated. Many thanks.
-
Wow - they look fabulous, Paul!
Love everything about them - poses and painting. The command base is superb - love the kneeling drummers - just brilliant, especially the one with the pistol. Nice touch with the partizans - must remember that point for my next Swedish unit :D .
Have you seen the latest musketeers planned from Bloody? (Out this weekend I think?) I wondered if the poses of the musketeers would suit three ranks, kneeling, stooping etc. ?
-
Andy: Many thanks.
I've only glanced at the Bloody figures. They are extremely nice, and I've bought quite a few. While I've used the Bloody cavalry, the Bloody infantry are noticeably bigger than the infantry in my collection, and so I've not used any of their infantry yet.
If you want figures firing in 3 ranks, and are happy with bigger figures, Redoubt do some Irish which are designed for a 3-rank salvo. I didn't ask Brian to use them as a starting-point because they are so big and they carry the later, lighter musket which didn't need a rest.
-
Andy: having now seen the Bloody infantry packs, I'm not sure whether the stooping figure is stooping enough to be used for the middle rank of three. I'll be interested to see how you get on. I'm only aware of 2 figures which are intended to be used as a middle rank - the Redoubt Irish figure which I've mentioned and a Warlord Swede which I recall you've used for your Swedish Blue regiment. The Redoubt Irish musketeers were, when they were first brought out, described by Redoubt as being suitable for TYW ragged Imperialist troops if memory serves, by the way.
-
The figures are on the way. I will have to have a play and see. May need a bit of a fiddle about ;D .
-
Excellent conversions, nothing but the best from Brian, excellent paint job and very interesting composition and basing. Much to admire.
Paul
-
Many thanks, Schoey. That's very kind.
-
They look superb!
Christopher
-
Many thanks, Christopher.
-
Really nice!!!!
-
Thanks. I'm hoping to have some more additions soon.
-
As promised, the first of the Yellow Regiment's pike. Conversions by Brian, painting by Andrew.
-
Wow! Those are really splendid. A fine looking body of men :D
-
Andy: thanks. I'm pleased with how they've turned out.
-
Absolute beauties Paul.
-
Wow! Very nice unit. It would be really interesting to know all the components used to make the different bodies
-
Thanks, fellas.
Bo: well, I know that the heads came from TAG Dutch pikemen with the plumes removed ( a laborious process). I think the torsos were Empress TYW (ex-Horcata) pikemen. Some of the arms were made from scratch. I'm not sure where the legs came from. I'll aim to speak to Brian in a few days and I'll ask him whether he remembers. The swords were Empress TYW.
-
Bo: Brian came back to me more quickly than I expected. He says "the figures are a mix of TAG, Empress, Foundry, Perry and Horcata, and the legs are from all the above and from different periods. The legs range from medieval through to AWI. That's the reason for never throwing anything away".
-

Brilliant! Brian is a true artist. Thanks for the specification!
-
Excellent figures, you have a unique collection.
Paul
-
Many thanks. That's very kind. I know that I was still working at a particular firm when I started the collection, and I left there about 15 years ago, so that's how long I've been working on it.
-
Absolutely incredible. The painting is fantastic, the basing is fantastic, and the figures.....just amazing.
A wonderfully unique collection that you must be very proud of.
-
Just wow…every time…glorious figures and basing
-
Thank you very much, guys. There are times when I find collecting like this very frustrating. It takes so long to build up units, and it's very expensive. The good thing, however, is that you can come up with figures which aren't available commercially, and which probably aren't commercially viable.
-
Great collections take time, I still have a number of Brian's creations to have painted, but quality is worth the wait.
Paul
-
Paul: thanks. I agree. Because I'm not gaming, I'm not under pressure to create an army by any particular time.
