Title: Need help paint black stone work
Post by: obsidian3d on July 24, 2012, 06:38:30 AM
Hi all,

I'm currently working on my long-ago-purchased Warhammer fortress. I've done two towers in grey and they look alright. However I was wondering if people have done any black brick work painting? What colors would you use to drybrush on for picking out the details?

I was thinking perhaps a very dark blue followed by a mid to dark gray.  I'd certainly Appreciate any suggestions you folks might have!

I would be tempted to mix in a little flesh and then add more in it gives a softer highlight

Yes, basically you can go for warmer, reddish highlights, using flesh for instance, colder, drawing toward blue, or more neutral greyish. (You can also get rather good effects by going toward purple colours, but it's a little trickier.)

A good black is hard to paint, and I suggest highlighting in at least two steps. If it's a little bit shiny you should draw the extreme up to white in selected places where the light shines from.

Now that the second tower is done I've opted to finish all 4 the same.  Not as exciting as different ones, but I'm going to keep an eye out for a terrain piece I can use to test the black stone advice.  Thanks all.
