Ha! That was my thought exactly. With all of the siege battles I kept thinking about the Total War games I played (before having kids!)
I kept trying to think of why defending troops would skirmish in front of a large wall, rather than fighting from behind it. Same thing - why would they go out in front of the breach rather than massing behind it?
Much of the series did seem to be poorly thought-out and executed... kinda like an important event in the plot would happen, but the outcome would not be clear to the viewer, as if you should know what happened without actually seeing it. It was not until after could you decipher the outcome based on what happens next in the episode.
It was fun to watch, but could surely use improvement. Hopefully season 2 will be somewhat better.
